What is she, /swco/?
>>
>>91928630
Exactly. I just think it should be treated just like how every other tv show is recommend. By people recommending a good episode so they can get a taste, or people just casually flipping the channel and happen to have an interest. I never see fans of other tv shows telling people to skip half of the content.
>>
>>91928893
I guess Star Wars has a lot of division between 'general' and 'specialist' fans. Look at viewing figures for TFA vs. audience numbers for Rebels, or readership for the books.
I'm sure there'll be a lot of people who want to breeze through TCW just to get 'caught up', but for every one in five that sticks around for the whole show, there's a real treat in store.

Soo... I'm just gonna throw this out there.
I hated the Umbara arc.
I thought it was really boring, and was actually very surprised to see that people regard it as one of the better arcs in the show.

>>

>I guess Star Wars has a lot of division between 'general' and 'specialist' fans.

I think that's something people don't really get. There are a lot of Star Wars fans who don't give a single fuck about the films and are only in it for the games, or a specific niche like fighter squadrons or ewoks or whatever.

Of course if that's you you can fuck right off now. Star Wars is about angry brown haired white women going on trench runs and fighting death stars exclusivity now. If you suggest that we get a new Rogue Squadron book, or bring up that Eric Walker or Aubree Miller would jump at the chance to do another Star Wars project, you'd get laughed out of the Lucasfilm boardroom.
>>
>>91928893
I think it actually comes from the fact that so much of TCW sucks dick hard.
People see season 1, they see kids show for 7 year olds, and they're discouraged.
So the guide was created to help them skip it to get to the actually good stuff.
>>
>>91929120

Girls legit love Star Wars now. At the risk of causing a huge shitstorm, what's everyone's problem with this?
I've seen little girls in the supermarket dressed up as Rey, holding their dad's hand. They've obviously insisted on wearing the costume all day.
Honestly, the only effect I can see is that it doubles my chance of having a kid who's into star wars. And then I get to share that magic, yo like my father before me

If they ever revisit the Old Republic era it's more likely to look like that than KOTOR
>>
>>91930183

I think people don't quite realize just yet how fucking thin the ST cast is when you strip away the actors natural charisma. Without John Boyega, Finn really isn't much. Kylo Ren's motivation is thin and confusing and if Adam Driver weren't a fucking good actor even with shit direction nobody would care. Even Daisy Ridley has a couple of good scenes to her credit.

At this point Poe has so many stories and so many supporting characters but none of it has fucking stuck. He has no real relationships that feel genuine except maybe with horse alien dude and even then only for like ten seconds since they don't really act like friends after he gets on the squadron.

Corran Horn had more of a personality in his first appearance as a supporting character in a comic with like nine other characters. In his fist novel he had actual friendships with Lyjayn and Ooryl and so when things happened they had an actual emotional weight besides "this guy looks cool".

I could see an animated series set in the Old Republic.

I think a feature film set in the distant past of the Star Wars universe might be a little much for your average moviegoer, which is a shame because the storytelling potential is limitless.

It also doesn't help they haven't met each other. Finn knows both of the others but he's the only link. OT most of the cast met up and then snatched Leia up. PT they all met in the first thirty minutes and stayed in contact. ST...not so much.

>>
>>91930708

I can't imagine Rey and Poe having much chemistry mainly because I can't imagine Daisy and Oscar having much chemistry. Poe is as mild as warm milk and Rey is kind of self obsessed, because the plot revolves around her getting everything. They want nothing from each other. The best thing you could say is if she becomes a pilot under him and has to actually take orders for once but even that's pushing it a bit.

>>91930756

They were only even on the same planet in a vague and academic sense for most of the film. Finn disappears and is nowhere to be found in vast open desert while she's on Jakku. While she's at Starkiller base he spends most of his time in orbit or flying around in the air. Same shit on Tadokana.
>>
>>91930708
>>91930756
Poe was going to be written out of the movie, originally dying in the TIE crash on Jakku until Abrams decided to 'fix it'.
Much as I like what Oscar Isaac does with the character, he still feels tenuously written-in. He has so much less going for him and his comic is dull as shit. I don't think he counts as a main character. Unless they do something drastic to turn him around.
>>
>>91930591
Partially because he's one of the more noteworthy aliens who hasn't been updated in a long time, and partially because Yakface has meme status among collectors, first for being one of the most notoriously difficult to find during the vintage days and second because one of the major collector sites is literally called Yakface.com.

Then you have Sim Aloo, who's one of a small handful of figures from the classic vintage line who has yet to be updated in the modern (1995-present) line and some feel that the only way a character as obscure as him is going to get another shot is by winning a poll. They're right that he has almost no shot at being remade, but they're wrong to think he'd have a chance at winning a poll like this.

>>
>>91930591
Same kind of fuckery that gave us Sim Aloo, although honestly I don't even think that "fuckery" is the right word to use when it comes to his place as a finalist.

A pretty large subset of the collectors who are pretty deep into collecting are interested in seeing the more unusual and noteworthy OT background characters get definitive action figures. It's personally not my thing, but I understand the appeal and given that characters like Yakface have a snowball's chance in hell when it comes to their chances of being made compared to other finalists like Ahsoka or Palpatine (Even though they're likely to get more votes), I feel like he's a valid and worthwhile candidate.
>>
>>91930601

Honestly Yakface has a chance of being remade with or without the poll. He's popular enough among the "background alien" characters and several Jabba's Palace characters have been remade, so yeah, Yakface is a wasted slot. This poll is better saved for characters who otherwise would have little or no chance of being made.

How come Harrison Ford hates Star Wars so much?
He had given up on acting before getting cast as Han Solo. The role made him a literal millionaire superstar.
Now he sighs and groans his way through interviews whenever it's brought up. He acts like it's a huge drag to have been a part of so many people's ciname experience and popular culture.
He denies ever having been "interested" in the role at all, despite what Hamill and others have said about his dedication to getting the character right and feverishly working on perfecting his dialogue.

He's just always thought it was kind of dumb and is a little annoyed at being more well known for Han Solo than for a lot of other stuff (though not quite as bad as Guinness).

Apparently he also really hated the costume.

>What's up with that?

Ford presents himself differently to fans rather than friends. He doesn't view the role of Han Solo as being the apex or nadir of his career: Simply one of many roles he's done.

It's a really good strategy for dealing with the enormity of star wars' success.

>I have been working with Mark Hamill and Tennyson (that can't be right) Ford. Ellison? No! Well a rangy, languid man who is probably intelligent and amusing

He really was a good friend.
>>
>>91931280
Resented George for not killing off Han in either ESB or RotJ because he sincerely believed the character's arc was lacking and didn't grow past the end of the first one. Furthermore, he doesn't like being bombarded by fans asking questions he has no answers to all the time and was never personally interested in science fiction in general. He loves westerns and adventure serials like Indiana Jones because they're like what he grew up with. Indy is his favorite role and is actually passionate about that. Also, He's old and wealthy enough to get away with being short with people and blowing off shit he doesn't care about. I think honestly though, he doesn't hate it as much as he says and probably has good memories from making them, just wants people to think he's grumpy so fans will leave him be.
>>
>>91931280
He has to deal with autists asking him if Han Solo got a Delunian 45.9 Hyperdrive installed into the Falcon after fighting Governor Uganta in Bigger Luuuke Book 5: Palpatine's Pooper Clone Saga 2.

is there a point at which to stop trying to watch the show if I still don't like it? I'm guessing probably somewhere in the middle of season 2?

>>
>>91931548
Seems to be the only reason he was all smiles during TFA interviews. Ford actually got a cut of the profits rather than just a straight fee so this was a huge payday for him. He'll probably always love TFA for that reason, regardless of what he thinks of the movie (and I wouldn't be surprised if the premiere was the only time he's ever seen it)
>>
>>91931066
Compared to other characters in the poll I feel like he's a much better option on the basis of actual releases. Both Ahsoka and Palpatine have SA figures and it's not like we have a real shortage of clones on that front either. I can't really comment on Sim Aloo beyond him also having some status as a background character with a history as a vintage figure, but either way I'd honestly consider Yakface to be in the upper half of the options here.

>>91931203
I don't understand your vitriol toward Aphra. While both Fives and Ahsoka are also non-film characters, I feel like Aphra's victory sets the best president for seeing legends characters in the future. It sucks that your dude didn't make the final cut, but honestly I feel like Legends folk need to simmer down a bit. We didn't see this kind of meltdown from people when a Tonnika sister didn't make it to the final round.

We do. It's around 60 or 70 that we start to prune. Probably even later depending on your genes
>>
>>91931851

Not that drastically unless you get old and fat and it hits you like a ton of bricks later on. Billy Dee Williams looked basically the same until he gained weight and his hair receeded a little and suddenly it was more noticeable. He didn't really change all that much from the 70's through the 90's. Even now he probably aged better than anyone else from the OT cast.

Oola's actress actually came back for reshoots like 20 years later because she literally looked exactly the same and George wanted a couple of close ups. There may have been a couple of minor wrinkles but once the makeup is on it isn't super noticeable.
>>
>>91932525
>Lets get real Han sliding back into debt and Leia getting booted from a failing republic were retarded

Sometimes the worst things can happen to the best of us. I was disappointed at how they all essentially went back to zero or what they knew best so long after RotJ but the reasoning is mostly solid. Han and Leia were not going to last long into marriage. Their relationship was based largely on passion. And the New Republic had been at least thirty years old by the time Leia's political career ended. Democracies aren't perfect institutions. As soon as people get the right to voice their wants and opinions, the system is going to get fucked real quick. The only thing the New Republic seems to have over the Galactic Republic is that its gridlock wasn't so much the result of corporate intervention as it was a clashing along party lines. We also have to remember that the New Republic came in the immediate aftermath of the Darwinist Galactic Empire.

Luke's entire generation of Jedi getting wiped out will take some explaining to feel organic, though.

>>91932615

I don't have nothing against people with strokes. I'm just trying to figure out if she has a legitimate excuse or if she's just unaware of her facial expressions.
>>
>>91932876

That's projecting and you know it. The republic lasted thousands of years before so obviously the system does work. It fell to partisan politics that didn't exist before, with some of the most thinly veiled jabs at political ideas that aren't popular on the west coast in fiction.

Even if you want to somehow push the retarded idea that democracy doesn't work, this website was created from a country that's used it for about fifteen times longer than that timeframe and survived rebellion and civil war without being ruined by a Benedict Arnold cosplayer.
>>
>>91932876

To be fair, if we want to talk about unrealistic things, the fact that Naboo remained pacifistic after they were forced to submit to a Trade Federation blockade doesn't make any sense either.

If you're interested in Star Wars then they're absolutely worth it. There are certainly rough patches, but overall there are a lot of great characters, storylines, and ideas contained within both shows. At this point, there's nothing in the current canon beyond the films that comes close to the influence that these shows have had on the greater Star Wars universe, and are honestly the place to start when it comes to exploring Star Wars beyond the movies.

The unfinished story reels are episodes of the Clone Wars that only reached the rough stages of animation before the show was cancelled. They're complete episodes that are fully voiced and canon, and are definitely worth your time.

So IIRC the Old Republic failed because of systemic corruption and bureaucratic deadlock which was what drove a lot of systems to join the Separatist movement in the first place, and the lack of a central military which meant the Separatist systems could secede thinking that they couldn't be stopped.
And now it seems like the New Republic is literally just a restoration of the Old Republic, with its weak military and bureaucratic deadlock, except this time without any Jedi to act as the personal agents of the Chancellor.
Did the founders of the NR really not bother to take steps to address the causes of the Clone War? Or did they blame it all on Palpatine and assume that if they could just get the OR back but this time without Palapatine it would all work out?

>Did the founders of the NR really not bother to take steps to address the causes of the Clone War? Or did they blame it all on Palpatine and assume that if they could just get the OR back but this time without Palapatine it would all work out?
Basically they learned absolutely nothing, so Mon Mothma and nearly everyone involved become complete idiots in order to justify the NR turning to crap so quickly and letting Empire 2.0 build up.

Twilight company. A single star destroyer is usually a pants shitting concept for regular joes since rebels don't have a lot of mon cal cruisers or even Nebulon B's. The entire idea of multiples or a super even existing is something that they can barely fathom in most groups.

Which I think is a concept people forget if they just watch Rebels or read a couple of comics. Hera and company aren't an average band of rebels, and Luke and company aren't either. An average day for an average band of rebels usually involves looking for a system that's so lightly defended there's maybe a couple of corvettes and transports, or else just a small number of stormtroopers, and then shooting at that before backup can arrive.
>>
>>91937899
The ground troops were doing that, the ISD itself was there basically as a mobile base that sat there and didn't do much itself.

What do you expect it to actually do? It's a Star Destroyer. There aren't any enemy ships in the air. That's the point of the Tarkin doctrine. The rebels are so scared to commit to an attack and actually fight a destroyer that they rest of the imperials can just do as they please.

Sums it up pretty neatly. Justifying that would be like justifying bombing out literally any and every hole in the wall in the middle east right now. Even once you take out public optics and assume nobody will know, that captain will need to justify that plan and resources to the admiralty, and if it fails it's his ass on the line instead of the stormtrooper officers.

The only people fucking stupid enough to try that are Tarkin and Krennic, a couple of assholes too arrogant to conceive of consequences, too big for immediate blowback, too psychotic to think it's a bad idea, and too stupid to realize that that way of doing things is exactly what would get them both killed.

But Jedha was 95% barren desert and caves in mountains. All the actual population was in occupied Jedha City. In fact in Vietnam the main advantage of the Americans was their air support. Properly employed, the Star Destroyer's orbital bombardment capabilities could easily be used to glass the caves that Saw was hiding in, which wouldn't be impossible to find.

I always get destroyed at the beach finale with Jyn and Cassian. It's absolutely flawlessly shot and scored.

As for the other three, they hit in the feels (particulary Chirrut and Baze and even Bodhi - the last mainly due to how coincidental and sudden it was), but haven't pushed me over the edge quite like the aforementioned scene. Chirrut's walk to the master switch is probably my favorite demonstration of the Force at work in the entire series though.

Tarkin is the man. It's so hard for a character like him to not come across as comically mustache twirling evil or sleazy, but he always had much more charisma, intelligence and gravitas. There's a subtlety to him that you wouldn't expect if you just read a description of his character on the paper.

I was so happy that they managed to actually give him a rather substantial role in RO. I just thought they were going to roll him out as a background cameo, but nope.

She is SW-Indy, which is an obvious mirror to Han Solo.

The supporting cast is obviously mirroring the OT cast. They were designed that way from the start.

The entire point was that they were the "anti-OT". You can bitch all you want, but they were created with the intent of being who they are, and they are succeeding at it considering she is the only character to not appear on-screen, to get her own comic. She is also winning that poll.

You can bitch and moan and cry all you like, but Aphra is a perfectly fine character that is quickly becoming a fan-favorite, and her companions (who are barely even around anymore btw, you'd know if you actually read the things you complain about) fit their roles perfectly fine. They aren't standout/break-out characters like she is (but the real red-pill is realizing this is because Chewie/R2/C3PO are just as unimportant and uninteresting) but they aren't bad by any means.

It's bizarre reading the "Aphra is everything wrong with modern star wars" and "choke on your figure" posts. Almost feels like they're falseflag posts, because it's non-sensicle to me that a perfectly harmless and fun group of characters could cause such rage. Either falseflag, or just pure autism.
>>
>>91943818
He's right, Aphra is a shit character and her solo comic is even worse than her taking up precious time in Vader's already super disappointing series. You are cancer.

STAR WARS
EPISODE TG: A NEW REEEEEEE-

It is an age of political shitposting. Luke, did I ever tell you about the fapping starships? It is theorized that they held Snoke, a Grey Jedi. In fear over Mice and Shevkles, Bendu lays in hiding.

In victory over the shitposting, there may one day be actual tabletop discussion. But that time will not come while glorious Kriea engages in ace combat. All of which pales in comparison to the shittiest Star Wars movie: The Ewok Movie. A Pheonix Squadron Pilot expresses Dark Greetings shortly before his death. A death that could have been prevented if someone hadn't put "Star Wars" in the OP.

Wedge Antilles hops on one transparisteel leg towards Sienar to engage in Professional wrestling. Space /k/ arrives shortly after, to debate about actual tabletop discussion With Ahsokafags. A certain light-side Sith is indeed a Mary Sue. In the end the Nucanon vs. Legends arguments can only be decided with silly lightsabers

>>
>>91945094
No it doesn't, in the slightest. I hated TFA, but like the Vader/Aphra comics. Just because something is similar to the OT, doesn't make it bad by default.

FFS the comics are set in the OT era, and they had a crossover where all the characters meet. It's supposed to be fun, the "characters meet their anti-selves" cliche.

I don't get why you would immediately dismiss it as shit when it's honestly good fun and perfectly in the spirit of the series.
>>

>the entirety of tfa

Here are the sins of TFA:

casting Max Von Sydow as a red herring brand new character to die five minutes in
Writing Poe out with an offscreen faux-death and then back in to do little else
Not giving Phasma or Hux enough to do
Shoehorning in the Falcon to get some cool flying scenes so Han Solo could appear to then get a miniadventure with grabthars and peruvian death gangs and bala tik
Maz Kanata existing to get a 'cantina' scene and mystery box force vision
putting carrie fisher in janitor coveralls with a lesbian vest
the falcon being able to make a lucky jump through starkiller base's shields
The Resistance being able to destroy starkiller base by targeting the thermal regulator on a lucky guess

The rest aint too bad.

Finn the pilot doesn't work, the entire reason he sprung Poe to begin with was because he can't fly
I think the best thing to do would have been instead of Rey sitting wistfully by her AT-AT, they should have shown her using a holographic flight simulator while watching ships leave Niima Outpost, show us where she learned to fly and her desire to leave
Have Finn be the mechanic, or at least the engineer who can bodge together fixes fast enough to keep things flying

Perhaps they should've shown that yeah, but her knowing how to fly wasn't that odd though, everyone in SW seems to know it more or less. To me it was more annoying for them being a team that it was pretty damn onesided in those scenes at least. I suppose he is a good gunner but you get my point.

That's why I said to either also have him be an engineer, navigator or whatever else instead of her doing most of it.
>>
>>91945915
The more I think about it the better it would have been if they'd decided to keep Poe alive all along, and have him along as the pilot, Rey as the mechanic keeping the Falcon in line and Finn as the gunner/tactical guy who tells them how to avoid an FO patrol since he's been part of them before
Give them all a role, and balance out the skills
>>91945868
Its not a case of practical vs CG effects, its a case of shitty creature design. The beasts from AOTC were all CGI all the time, but they looked awesome. Even the not-Rhino was cool, but the Rathtars are just balls with tentacles and eyes on them.

Mixed feelings to the prequels were boiling and becoming more prominent than ever once the "new movie hype" faded.

Ahsoka was, to put it how Anakin did, snippy. This frustrated fans who thought that the show was making Star Wars too immature, and negatively impacting the legacy of Anakin Skywalker, who suddenly "always had" a tweenage apprentice.

However the show quickly grew on fans, relieving them of their worries and fears, becoming a cult classic.

If you are enjoying season 1, then your dick is going to be diamonds once you start hitting the 3rd season, onwards.

She's become a fan-favorite character for sure.

I legitimately don't understand EU fags who think of the force as DBZ while thinking Yoda's flips and shit were blasphemy because he should be a wise guru who trusts in his spirituality over brutal power. Mortis, the chosen one prophesy, and the Guardians of the Whills are what make the force interesting to me. It's the whole 'Catholic Church style morality and miracles with eastern philosophy and lifestyle' that makes the force and the Jedi so interesting to me. Media franchises with 'magical powers that allow characters to shit fire and use telekinesis' are a dime a dozen but you rarely see franchises where religion, philosophy, and prophesy are so perfectly executed.

She'd make an exception for Barriss
>>
>>91947418
Which has always been one of the main issues with the Force and how its presented and interpreted both by authors and by characters inside the universe
The Force is a very Taoist inspired philosophy, but Lucas (subconsciously or otherwise) layered a very Western/Abrahamic moral view of there being Good and Evil, and the ultimate goal should be for Evil to be destroyed by Good
Taoism by comparision is about minimizing Evil but accepting that ultimately its just a part of nature that needs to be understood and mitigated against rather than outright crushed.
Hence the ongoing kerfuffle about 'Grey Jedi', people recognize there needs to be an end to the overly dualist "Sith v Jedi" approach to the Force but the idea of Jedi as 'good guy with Force powers and lightsaber' is too deeply ingrained for people to fully let go of it
>>
>>91947267
Well said.

Just to add something, the Force being so unknowable and prone to interpretation is a big part of what makes it so fascinating. Like you said, magic is a standard in any fantasy franchise, but usually bound by clear rules. The Force doesn't have them, not really. Yes, we understand it, we know how it operates, but it's not like you can lay down comprehensive breakdown of the concept and uphold it as an unbreakable law.

If there's one thing I'm afraid of in relation with the ST's direction, it's that it'll try to do exactly that. Moving beyond the binary dichotomy is great, it's what the franchise needs if it wants to grow, but just don't try to simultaneously "answer" the questions and present some capital T Truths about the Force. That would do the exact opposite, stifle the discussion and limit the possibilities of what you can do with it.
>>
>>91947437
The irony is Barriss would be much older than Seven since she was about 15 when the Jedi collapsed
So if anything she'd be the one lewding Seven, and teaching her how to prey on the young

>>91948094
It's just the ship's spar. The armored skeletal frame that holds it together. You're thinking about the entire thing wrong, it's not two hulls separated by this tiny thing, it's a thick base upon which the hulls are expanded at either end. Think of an axe with bottle rockets attached to the end opposite of the blade.

Furthermore, note also that the only times it was split in canon, it took the full barrage from Darth Vader's Devastator to defend the Profundity, and even then only split further up the base of the neck, at a thicker section, not at the thinnest point. Secondly, in Aftermath, it only gets split by a super star destroyer, and both sides keep firing upon imperial ships as it descends to Jakku.

Finally, in Return of the Jedi, one exchanges broadsides with the Executor and doesn't come out worse for wear.

You've actually taken the time to listen to it? Have they brought up anything new at all?

Just as an aside, sometimes I wonder where the OT purist mindset comes from. Alright, so they have a lot of fondness for the movies, I get, but why are so many people still held up on everything that happened in the last twenty years? Why do they still care about this franchise? What brings them back if everything new is either insufficient or completely wrong?

Like okay, RLM made a series of reviews back in the day and they've build a business out of it. It's their shtick. But I'm wondering about the actual fans, those on message boards and elsewhere who are still an active part of the community despite being perpetually displeased. What drives them?
>>
>>91949689
A lot of it is nostalgia being reinforced by facts
OT purists watched the OT when they were very young and fell in love with Star Wars and the universe almost instantly, as a lot of fans do. Then the prequels came out, and were very different from the OT in a lot of ways that felt like it missed the point. So they turned against the prequels on principle and held up the original movies as what they wanted to see more of. Over time that turned into "everything that deviates from the OT style is just not Star Wars" and of course their little feedback loop of nostalgia is only reinforced by the fact that on their own the OT are damn good movies in their own right, while the PT (while viewed a lot more favourably today for which I'm glad) are a little shaky in terms of quality
>>
>>91949689
Only 30 minutes I admit, but that's basically what they repeated throughout it. Rich brings up the Death troopers novel saying it's a horror book and they shit on it because that's not what SW is. This moment was probably the most retarded:

>Hey we're on what's it caled
>not!Mos Eisley lol

But Maz' cantina castle is totally cool for them I guess.
>>
>>91949977

not him but I just finished listening to the commentary and it's not as bad as he's making it out to be. They even say at the beginning that none of them hate the movie but they don't understand why Star Wars fans defend it for being anything but fan service, particularly the excuse that it's a "war movie" even though there's no war happening in it that isn't happening in any of the other movies. They pretty much reiterate what they said in their half in the bag episode, that they think on a technical and visual level it's a much better movie than The Force Awakens, but in terms of plot and characters it's a mess. And they do talk about The Force Awakens being flawed, with a lot of jokes made about how stupid Starkiller Base was.

If you hate RLM's opinions on Star Wars and disagreed with everything they said in the review then I wouldn't recommend listening to it outside of wanting good moments of Rich laughing. But if you're like me and you agreed with what they had to say on some things (I definitely didn't hate Rogue One and think they were wrong on a lot of things) then there's no harm in listening to it.

If anything their half in the bag was more critical of the film and Mike even says at the beginning that he's enjoyed the film more on rewatches. This was really just them being able to point out flaws in the story and giving examples of ways it could've been better executed.

I'm going to get called a shill now aren't I

I think they've missed the point behind the "war movie" argument. Its not about the war that's happening, its about HOW its happening. There is maybe one firefight in the entirety of ANH, and its a pretty shoddy affair with Stormtroopers pouring blaster fire into a narrow corridor and still somehow missing the heroes barely tucked into cover behind the prison doors
Rogue One on the other hand has a very different feel in its firefights and battles, gives them an edge of desperation that other Star Wars movies just don't have.
And I frankly don't care too watch RLM (they might have good points but I'm not hacking through an hour of video to get to them) but what are their complaints about the plot? I thought the plot to Rogue One was actually pretty tightly written
>>

they said it was overly complicated, especially revolving the shit with Bodhi going to Saw and getting mindfucked by a hentai monster while at the same time Cassian is finding Jyn who knows how to get to Saw and then both of those plotlines are not-so-neatly tied together when the Death Star shoots the planet and they go to Eadu conveniently when Krennic goes to Eadu and while they're there the Rebels decide to blow it up.

In all fairness it is a bit messy imo

The Plinkett reviews never said everything was CG in the prequels, but somehow people here act like that's all he talked about for an hour. He definitely said there was too much CG, but wasn't complaining about it being there for things that would be necessary to do with CGI, but that the overuse of blue screen made it so the actors didn't really know what they were acting against so it looked especially fake.
>>
>>91950493
Will we ever learn what the movie was like before reshoots. From interviews with bohdies actor its sounds like he wasnt meant to appear until a fair way into the movie. Like I think he starts as just some guy on a ship they steal.
>>
>>91950181
Interesting. Well, I think the "war movie" label is misplaced similarly to how MCU fans like to call TWS a "political thriller". Even though RO skirts much closer to it's inspiration, comparatively, than TWS does. What does make RO stand aside from other SW movies - while still being a SW movie through and through - is the difference in tone and perspective. It's grounded, more realistic (and I mean literary realism here), not steeped in myth and archetypes as much. The characters are more realist as well, even if they don't break genre conventions. So I don't find that as an invalid observation or an illegitimate reason to find Rogue One refreshing among the Saga movies.

About the plot and characters, I see their point. The plot is shaky and the characters were perhaps a bit broadly drawn, with Jyn's character growth being hampered by the reshoots. In the end, they were still a net positive for me, as I found their application effective for the story told and their arcs resonant (particulary Cassian).

The root of the problem however is not about how gritty the film is or how flat the characters are - it is simply that this wasn't a movie made for them. Yes, it was fanservice in a way. But, in this case, I don't use that term with it negative connotations. It was a movie made for the fans with a pre-existing investment in the setting, by the fans who wanted to broaden it by offering new viewpoints on the familiar as well as new worldbuilding. RLM came in "just" wanting to see a fun movie.

I know this is something they indirectly made fun of in one of their podcast parodies, but personally, I don't see anything wrong with a movie that is tailor made for a specific subset of the fanbase. Isn't that what they keep championing? More niche genre movies with focus instead of universally-appealing watered down mainstream? Fine, Rogue One has problems. It's okay to criticize it for them. But is criticism of it having a different idea for Star Wars warranted?

Not really though
Galen knows Saw (somehow, I suspect through Lyra) so when he needs a message sent to the Rebellion he tells Bodhi to find Saw. At the same time, the Rebels have fallen out with Saw so they find Jyn (who worked with him for years) to try and get them in to talk to him about this pilot
The Rebels don't talk to Saw because he's a paranoid nutjob with a penchant for completely disregarding civilian casualties (as we saw in the attack on the transport) who routinely meatfucks potential spies with a weird pet psychic octopus.
Krennic going to Eadu at the same time is a tiny bit of plot convenience I grant you, but not bigger than anything you'd expect. And of course the Rebels would send in an airstrike, its a repeated plot point that they want Galen dead to try and halt the Death Star's progress because they don't realize its complete

Honestly a lot of those complaints sound like the result of wilful nitpicking and purposefully withholding suspension of disbelief purely so they can find "flaws" which aren't really there

I like how I'm constantly hearing different takes on what exactly the reshoots were. I always see "RESHOOTS" attributed to any complaint people have.

It's a bit clunky in the first act. There's a prologue of Jyn's backstory, which later leads into a dream sequence also recapping the prologue, which also connects to another flashback scene that only appears in the dream.

>>91950677
>He definitely said there was too much CG
>but that the overuse of blue screen made it so the actors didn't really know what they were acting against
Could they really do it without using that much blue screen and CG, though? It had to be done considering the setting and locations picked for the PT. If you think that the PT had unnecessary green screen or CGI then just look at any box office hit now days. Hell, even TFA and R1 had used both more but didn't need to.
>>
>>91950708
God damn I wish more /swco/ debates were like this instead of people yelling ">SHILL" at each other

But anyway, while you're right in how the film is flawed, I don't think that the film being "for the fans" is a good defense for those flaws. It'd work if you were arguing why it's fine that they had so many callbacks to the original, but in terms of shitty character development and poor pacing, I don't see how that's fan-service at all. It's just poor writing imo.
>>
>>91950896
Is there anything to support this other than them cutting the "I rebel" line?
>>
>>91950905
Nah I think you're misreading the argument as being "any CGI is too much CGI" which it isn't. The way TFA and RO used it was the perfect balance of practicals and CGI. The reason why they talked so much about using practical effects and real sets before The Force Awakens came out was because of the lack of that in the prequels, especially as they went on.

Now, that's not saying the prequels used no practical effects or sets. They obviously did and anyone who thinks otherwise is a fucking retard. But at the same time, they used them sparingly compared to the amount of green screen used instead of locations/sets.

That's the issue. It's not that CGI was used, but how the CGI was used. I think people on both sides of the argument don't realize that and sort of generalize it into "TOO MUCH CGI"
>>
>>91950906
>But anyway, while you're right in how the film is flawed, I don't think that the film being "for the fans" is a good defense for those flaws. Well yes, I agree. Like I said, it's justified to criticize the movie for that. I probably shouldn't have melded my points like this, it's that, when talking about "the root" thing, I just meant that RLM had, by design, a harder time getting into the movie in the first place, which then made the objective flaws even more intolerable. Unlike TFA, where the opposite made them more tolerant of TFA's own significant problems with the plot.

Movies are more than a sum of their parts.

The dialog from the trailer with Saw is played very differently in the final film. In the trailer he warns about what will happen if she continues to fight, yadda yadda yadda. There's some obvious reshoots in her scenes interacting with mon mothma and the rebel council.

In the final film she comes across as very mercurial in her temperament, which works I guess.

I disagree. R1's CGI and practicals looked fine because it had CGI from 2016, and not 1999. I'm not going to compare all the films because it'll start another shitstorm.
>The reason why they talked so much about using practical effects and real sets before The Force Awakens came out was because of the lack of that in the prequels
Ironically each prequel film had more practical effects and real sets than TFA altogether. Not only that, they lied about a lot of things being practical, which turned out to be CGI in the film.
>they used them sparingly compared to the amount of green screen used instead of locations/sets
To be fair, they did use locations when they could. It's not their fault that they couldn't find locations that could be used for Coruscant, Utapau or even Mustafar. The ending shot of Episode 3 could've been filmed at the location though.
>>

>The ending shot of Episode 3 could've been filmed at the location though.

oh man a few weeks ago in here I pointed out that the ending to Episode 3 was filmed when they were on location for Episode 2 but they decided to reshoot it on a green screen for some reason and it lead to like 24 hours straight of arguing over whether or not the shot of Owen and Beru looking at the binary sunset looked better or worse than the one of Luke in ANH.
