I still say it's all justification. TFA sucked and people spent months trying to justify it. By the time that started to wear thin R1 was out and suddenly OH NO FOR REAL THIS TIME STAR WARS IS REALLY BACK.

Rogue One is ok. That's it. The plot drags on and most of the characters are thin. The action sequences are often disconnected from the plot itself except in a vague way. It puts cameos above making sense too often and if you don't believe me try to justify the cantina guys showing up because even the writers admit that was pure BS.

People are just overcompensating for how bad Force Awakens was.

One version of the story basically went that Skywalker appeared to have pieces of Darth Vader’s lightsaber on him but they were obscured and you wouldn’t really notice unless you were into the lore. Those kinds of rumors are always fun, especially when they’re coming from credible avenues of information.

If it is a story element, will Kylo get it back and stabilize his saber with the power source of his grandfather’s lightsaber? It doesn’t sound like Kylo is getting it without getting better of Luke Skywalker first, though.

Rogue One threw them for a loop because they knew absolutely nothing about it. They were swearing that a Boba Fett or Han Solo movie would be the first spinoff (and to their credit, both were being worked on in some fashion, even if none of their reports on them turned out to be true beyond "hey there's Boba/Han movies happening!") and then out of nowhere they announced Rogue One and MSW was caught completely off guard. >Leia is taken aboard a massive Star Destroyer. Phasma presents her to Snoke. Snoke and Leia trade barbs and Snoke is angry by the mention of Luke returning by the end of the conversation. He has Leia thrown in a holding cell. He brings up Hux on a hologram and tells him to inform Kylo Ren they have his mother.
That's the end of the first act.

Among the first things you see in the original movie is a blue pedal bin on wheel that chirps and a weird guy in a movement limiting black costume with inexplicably loud respirator.

People like to skim past the silliness of this franchise, as if it's all just Luke philosophing with a wise old mentor in a swamp (just forget that wise old mentor is a little frog puppet with a quirky speech pattern) and spaceships flying around like fighters in some WW2 footage. And sure enough, it depends on each individual story to determine how "serious" its mix should be (RotS certainly wouldn't have been improved with Ewoks), but excising the childish elements altogether - that's kind of missing the point of this franchise.

As Lucas said recently, it's a story for 12 year olds.

I mean, it's a different kind of silly. R2 is a robot. He looks weird, but he's still recognizably a robot. He has wheels, he beeps and boops, lights up. Studying mystic mumbo jumbo in a swamp is silly, as is banking in space, but there's a logic to it.

Lightsaber helicopters just feels off because it really works with nothing we've seen from it before. The spinning lightsaber itself drew comments, and it was silly, but it never truly bothered me. But lightsabers providing lift by spinning? I think it only showing up for that one story also made things weird. Light a toyetic show where there's one episode they use some tool or weapon or ability then literally never again.

This is kind of the point of my fan rewrite of The Force Awakens:
Make Rey already have been picked up by The First Order years prior, working as a ship mechanic. Rey, Finn, and a third character are all childhood friends. Have scenes establishing them and the first order while cutting back to Leia and the Resistance, establishing who they are, why they don't have the direct support of the rest of the New Republic, and that both sides are looking for the COORDINATES (not map) to Luke's present location. TFO lands on Jakku, following a tracked single Resistance fighter. Finn and third friend mobilize, third friend dies in the raid, and when no one else seems to care, it dawns on Finn and Rey that they are literally just tools and they decide to break Poe out and escape.

The rest of the movie proceeds normally. Instead of Rey searching for the family that abandoned her on Jakku, she's searching for the family she was separated from by The First Order.

We kept bringing her around open windows and public areas in order to draw the would-be assassin out because we knew he had too much pride to just shoot her from long range. He had used his payment to hire another bounty hunter to kill the senator for him while he sent us on a wild bantha chase. Also the 2nd assassin used her payment to buy a robot to assassinate the senator for her. Did I mention the 2nd assassin was a shapeshifter? She could have been a good friend in disguise and just shot the senator for all we knew! Then the robot used its payment to buy poisonous bugs to release into the senator's room while she slept after lasering a hole through the window. It could have just lasered her too after that because we we weren't watching her at all, but it already bought the bugs. So we sense the hostile life forms (not the robot) in the room and rush in and save the senator in the nick of time! Then I jumped out the window to chase the robot back to its owner!
