What you missed is that the size of the ship doing the jump is the big detail people forget.

We've seen smaller ships (U-wing, Falcon, etc) do the jumps out of gravity wells just fine. When it comes to things like cruisers and ISDs, which are much, much larger, the "can't jump in a gravity well" problem occurs. It's touched on in the Thrawn novel.

Thrawn parks the Chimaera well-within atmosphere of Batonn and mentions (or Eli mentions it, I don't remember) how it would be impossible for the ship to jump out of system if a sneak attack zoned in behind them. To me this implies that the size of the ship is the key detail, not just an overall blanket "can;t do this" with any size ship.

Ezra 'dies', or rather abandons the Rebellion and the ways of the Force after his jimmies are rustled by all of the loss and the destruction of Lothal. He probably realizes that he's too susceptible to the dark side and breaks off to quarantine himself and cool off.

I doubt they'd kill him off, they've spent a lot of time highlighting his growth as a person, from learning to fly ships (Secret Cargo) and work as an infiltrator (Through Imperial Eyes).
