No, previous comics are just flat better if you wanted to make a top five. KOTOR comics probably had a better story than the actual games and Rogue Squadron was god tier Star Wars. Even if you wanted something newer, Ghost Prison is at worst on par with Marvel's Darth Vader. Classic Marvel did a better job developing Luke's character than modern Marvel ever has.

The only "big" comics you can really diss are Dark Empire and Legacy.

There's a difference between good and best. Claiming that a couple of years publication from the second best out of two will steamroll decades of publications, or even consistently approach the best, is pushing it.

As for classic marvel, I don't even see how that's ambiguous. Luke manages to win a duel with a smart tactic and some luck in the first annual, only to hesitate and be unsatisfied because he had to kill someone and question his place in the force, then when he becomes the main focus again after ROTJ we see him struggle with the dark side by avenging people who die or trying to protect the living, come out stronger to challenge would be sith lords and win by developing new styles and techniques, and deal with his hesitation in training a new generation of jedi. That version of Luke has an arc and development to go through. He clearly becomes a better version of himself as time goes on, but comes into conflict with his friends, rebel command, and people who trust him multiple times. He even gets a new costume as he develops as he shifts from the dark robes when he was conflicted at the end of the trilogy to white and gold robes later on to show he's a more confident jedi knight. The only reason it took that long is they didn't want to do anything with Luke between 5 and 6 since they went with developing Leia instead.

NuMarvel Luke is effectively frozen in place. He only wears outfits from the movies. He only flies with the callsign from the films despite that making no logical sense. No matter how many duels he gets into he never learns or develops his skills. His relationships with the people around him don't even change that much.

It took old marvel a while, but that's because they went to the effort of developing the whole trio in different focus issues. Leia got her shit on Mandalore. Han got to have adventures with people who weren't in the films to develop his character. NuMarvel has Luke as the only real main character in the ongoing.

By the time Ben left Luke, he was older than Luke was when he became a Jedi Knight. By the time TFA happens Obi-Wan was halfway to the council and had been a Jedi Knight for years when he was Ben's age. Kanan literally fucked off and became a drunk for like fifteen years and he was still a Knight by about the same age.

By literally every metric you measure a Jedi, from classically trained orthodox temple user all the way to jury rigged hick kid who's mostly self taught, Ben Solo is a shitty jedi. The justification people turn to is that Luke has to be total shit as a master just to justify that.

What more is there to it? Yes, ClassicMarvel did develop his character to an extend, but really it didn't feel like much, amounted to basically nil, and wasn't always great. What little development canon comics have given him is better.

That isn't character development. Going on missions that don't advance your character in any visible way isn't equivalent to having a fight that makes you question your overall goals and your place in it.

Which is the thing. Luke has just been stumbling along like a train on a railroad. There's no sense that he's actually doing anything so much as being led along by the plot. He isn't making any choices or realizations AT ALL. He just happens to find a book from Obi-Wan like he just happens to stumble on Vader and rush at him and get smacked back without learning anything and he just happens to do this and that. Luke Skywalker isn't doing anything, things are happening to him.

Heir to the Jedi takes place in the exact same timeframe but Luke does more than just react to things. He actually tries to do things on his own besides "be force guy". He makes choices about his mission. He has specific goals about what he wants to learn. He actually progresses towards being the guy we see in Empire Strikes Back instead of being permanently frozen in place.

Do you guys think Lucasfilm are preparing something big to fill the gap between Episode V and VI ?
I mean, if you look at it, almost all gaps between films have been filled with new content, even between Episode VI and VII.

IV-V has most of the comics, including the main Star Wars + Vader comics, novels...
I-II has Obi-Wan & Anakin
II-III has TCW and everything linked to it, obviously
III-IV has novels, Rebels, comics, and a stand-alone movie (which makes sense since it's the longest timegap)
IV-V has most of the comics, including the main Star Wars + Vader comics, novels...

V-VI is the shortest timegap (only 6 months), but a lot of important stuff is supposed to happen in here. Mainly, we have Luke finishing his training (visiting Yoda, building his lightsaber...), Leia looking for Han, the construction of the Death Star II, the stealing of its plans (MUH BOTHANS)...
And yet the only thing we have in here is Moving Target, a completely unrelated story.

I'm 100% positive they're preparing something to fill the gap.
What would you guys want this to be ? A comic ? A novel ? A stand-alone movie ? A new TV show ? Unless Rebels really does go through the OT and fills these gaps.

There's no doubt in my mind about it. It's the only period in time that has barely been scratched, even less so than the ST era has by now.

I'm not sure if they're waiting for Rebels to catch up, or finish for something new, but they're definitely going to have a huge expansion there when they're ready.

They may even be waiting for Visceral's Star Wars game, so they can build around that, similar to Shadows of the Empire.

I'm not really sure what you're expecting in terms of "major reveals" when following the OT cast between movies. They're very limited by the movies they are set between.

And that being said, it's not impossible for them to surprise us with reveals. The main comics how shown us when Vader truly learned he had a son, when Luke first fought Vader, and when Luke/Leia came face to face with Vader in a huge battle that. Granted that last one we knew everyone would live (except maybe Aphra/Sana) but you get the point, they can still reveal big parts of Star Wars history, but they're also limited by previous media, so you can only expect so much.

They've kind of fucked up that era because they said that the Rebellion split up and did only a handful of missions in that year and then Leia went on her mission right before ROTJ in Moving Target. The only thing they could really do with that era is whatever Luke's mission was (he reported to Mon Mothma in the book but we're never told why) and bounty hunter shit. Maybe something with Vader. Rebels will probably spend about half a season in this time period with a story about Phoenix Squadron wondering if the other cells are doing alright and being frustrated that they're under strict orders to stay low.

The period between ANH and ESB only, at most, covers the first year after Yavin, and that's being generous, there's still 2 other years of stuff. Also there's only one thing between TPM and AOTC despite that being a ten year difference, and of course nothing BEFORE Episode 1.

That said I do believe it's possible to have something grandly important happen in between 5 and 6, even if the Rebellion is lying low they aren't doing absolutely literally nothing for 6 months, they have to be doing something, like finishing Mon Cal fleetbuilding at Telaris and elsewhere, mass-producing B-wings, recruiting from outer rim worlds, infiltrating Imperial strongholds and infesting them with double agents (would give good excuse for Bothan presence), something like that.

Pretty reasonable, if I remember. He regularly gets into trouble and requires his sister or Han or some OC protagonist to help him out. Most of EU material about the Big Three was written before the power creep set it, so I'd say he's pretty vulnerable, which makes it more impressive when he wins at the end.

EU Luke was more or less a Force god.

I just picked up the blu ray. The only thing that's really jumping out at me that I didn't notice in the theater is that the U-Wing's wing position seems to be really inconsistent. Sometimes it flies with them deployed, sometimes they're folded, and there doesn't seem to be any hard rules to why.

This actually gets into the ethics of global governance.

Say one government rules over the entire globe. Any attempt to secede or differentiate to much will be slapped down by the central world government. But what's the worst case scenario of any state? Civil war. What's the worst case scenario for a global government? Global civil war.

The same applies to galactic governance, once you embark on that the lid of 'galactic civil war' is opened up, and its a pretty bad demon as we have seen through Star wars.

In the novels he's an actually likeable in some instances character who has methods of inference and causal logic which make his deductions both reasonable and actually entertaining to see. He's an actual genius, and does smart things to get results, he isn't just a genius because he gets results, a la Rebels.

The Tarkin doctrine was essentially the ultimate boiling down of naked authority 'do as we say or die'. Although its big failing is that it is all stick and no carrot, any actor which isn't directly behind the Tarkin doctrine (read; every single thing that wasn't actually Imperial Navy/Army/firmly Imperial population/planet) has incentives to throw absolutely everything they have in destroying it.

It didn't answer any of the big questions of governance, it just simplified things. When the first Death Star was destroyed was probably when the empire was done too actually, because it showed that no matter how high the Empire raised its violence, it would never be able to control the galaxy. Hence a return to the Republic model of cooperation after the war, but again this in bloodlines suffered from too weak a centre.

I'm starting to doubt whether galactic governance is even possible in Star wars. That probably isn't an accident because its Star WARS not Star Trek.

You can't have EU thrawn in rebels because we don't have the actual screentime to make a complicated plot, also its for fucking children and they would just lose interest in a 30 minute 'Thrawn carefully lays out a plan' fest. Show Thrawn isn't very compelling as a character, but no character on rebels really can be. It's not a big failing, its the difference between mediums, of course EU thrawn is going to be a stronger character he has 3 books to do shit in, not maybe 2 or so hours in a tv show.

You failed to address the argument that EU Thrawn is NOT a well-written character, with several notable asspulls and the persistent "dude art lmao" explaining entire species' invariable tactical strategies as opposed to merely ideals. Thrawn as written by Zahn is a badly-written character made pleasant by Zahn's excellent writing style (inverse of Chuck Wendig). Thrawn in Rebels is less grand, but more justified.

They literally had like 4 fucking episodes where they show how Thrawn figured out where the planet was bit by bit, including figuring out who the Rebel spy was, and using him to figure out where exactly the Rebels were.

He did not pull it out of nowhere.

This is your only real point IMO, but its worth mentioning that not only is Zahn himself writing a new book for Thrawn, but he also came onto Rebels to help with Thrawn's portrayal and development. I've never considered Rebels to have failed to get Thrawn in-character, they did a brilliant job bringing him to life canonically with what little screentime he got. It got me satisfied enough to be interested in reading the upcoming novel too.

If you think Thrawn is weaker because he hasn't had as much screentime, well that's fair enough, although you've only got about a year to hold onto that, because this time next year, he'll have been the overarching villain of two Rebels Seasons, and the lead in his own book.

If you think Thrawn is somehow drastically a worse character now than he was in the EU because of execution and portrayal, then I don't know what to tell you, because they seem pretty similar to me.
