As someone who works in the Entertainment Industry, the general time given for an extended painting is ~2 weeks freelance. By which I mean a painting that is rendered and won't break apart upon printing.

Then for comps, you are given about a week for say 5~10 colour comps. These are mostly just fast painted shapes to get an idea down. They look like trash when printed or looked at with a discerning eye, which is why you will mostly see them from 1000px max, and they are painting at 6400px max.

It is actually much easier and faster to paint a large and open scene where you see a large environment and some figures from a distance than it is to paint a few figures in closer profile-like view. Even for a professional painter, painting say, a portrait from Life takes 6 hours to get something that looks decent in oil. Painting something from photo reference and imagination takes longer unless you are painting over a photo.

Also, of the 2 weeks or so you are given, you are fully expected to grab and take your own photo reference in costume for the piece that you are working on, which can take up a day quite easily.

For a Matte Painting, which is also Concept Art, these take a 3~4 weeks generally, as these have to be fully rendered and good from any distance with extreme detail.

Pick up some charcoal and do some no line art sketching. Tones only, and you'll likely love it. It'll help you start thinking in shapes and not in lines and it helps you give up on fixing shit because you can just work over charcoal

Just to be clear I'm talking the soft charcoal on a newspaper like surface and using a building up or blocking method. You block in the darks and mids them cover everything with a later of charcoal and blend it then work the darks back in and pull out highlights with a kneeded easer or your hands and never put down lines. If you plan on saving anything you'll need a fixative.
