Nefcy knows where she wants the show to go, it's her baby and she's been building on the concept for like a decade.
A lot of the weird, mostly bad stuff in Season 1 can be blamed on Disney wanting safe episodic plots and inserting generic purposeless characters like Ferguson and Alfonso.
Nefcy and her core team were given much more control over the show by the second half of Season 1 and the difference is noticeable, and only got more pronounced in Season 2 when they had a consistent team of writers and storyboarders the whole way through and didn't have to deal with shit like switching animation studios halfway through the season.

A lot of early Kerubim was just repetative, in my opinon. Very forumalic. While they did eventually start more interesting stuff like Ecafliip city, kerubim's brothers, Lu amnesia and so on a lot of the lighter stuff like Indie rivalary didn't jive with me. I'd like the spectacle at times like the boufball ep but that's it. Some lighter stuff was nice, I recall enjoying the one where they go to the moon.
Simply put there was a lot of miss, in my taste before there were enough hits. I'd come back for good episodes and arcs but I wasn't jonesing for it.

I should specify, he chose to leave forever based on this.
