Ludo sounds too cutesy for what they do with the character later, even if what they did for his voice in Japanese is understandable.

I didn't really notice it at first but, looking back at earlier episodes, Ludo's voice is a lot lower in the second season. It could get like that at times earlier but eventually became his standard voice; unless they do that in the dub too it'll probably lose something.

Toffee sounds fine for the 2 or 3 seconds of his voice I heard in some ad.

Making them switch animation studios in the first season to the cheapest ones available, no warning, not even mid-season, with the justification of "your style's basic enough to be animated anywhere" was such a dick move.

I kind of half agree with you.

I don't think Marco should get any kind of 'magic' in the sense of other characters in this series.

That said, I think it would be hard to buy him being able to keep up with villains at Toffee's level as a normal human. So I wouldn't be against a magical enhancement to his fighting ability that essentially just gives him superhuman punching shit power-ups.

As long as he stays as 'karate-boy' I'm cool with a little magic enhancement to explain how he can keep up in fights now that the villains are a little more serious than before.

But yeah, Marco being able to do any kind of overt magic would ruin the dynamic he has when he's fighting with Star.

I've thought about this before and I think it could work if done right, kind of a parallel to Star's development.

Marco could have his own sub-plot about learning to balance the good and the evil inside himself.

It is true it was a joke in it's motivations but it was from an earlier time in the series, Ludo also used to be a similar level of joke and it took just one episode (Ludo in the Wild) to re-make his character into something more serious. It could be done but the execution and final result of such an action would be what really decided if it was a good idea or not.

The problem is that it makes no sense that Marco was so easily able to beat up monsters who are so much bigger and stronger than him, right from the very start of the show. I mean sure, Ludo's followers were morons, but some of them were strong morons. And Buff Frog at least is a legitimately skilled fighter, even if none of the rest of them were. Yet Marco was outclassing them so badly that fighting monsters was just a game to him.

I realize that's because season 1 was more comedic and didn't start to get really serious until Toffee showed up, but it's still crazy that a scrawny 14 year old human would be so strong.

If they got rid of the voice of the tentacle and just had Marco grappling with more destructive/animalistic urges brought on by its presence, that could work. That's more along the lines of the fan concepts that I think are good ideas on how to deal with it.

But that would seem to require either a semi-retcon or some weird developments to bring back the tentacle but not its original voice or motivations. I mean, if they want to do it and can handle it well then I'd like to see it, but I just don't feel there's any need to bring the original incarnation back unless they noticeably switch things up.

I actually thought Ludo was already becoming more sympathetic and pitiful toward the end of the first season, so it wasn't much of a leap to stop treating him as a total joke. Though even his competence developed in that episode was still in service of his original goals of becoming all-powerful, which fits his narcissistic/delusional character-- as opposed to a tentacle that doesn't have as much character to speak of but equally ridiculous goals.

I wouldn't mind if they brought the Monster Arm back; I just don't feel they need to either. What they have going on now is more interesting.

Toffee is also a special case I suspect.
In particular I think his regenerative abilities are far beyond what his kind would normally be capable of (I'm pretty sure your average Septarian could not regenerate from nothing but bones).

I say this mainly because Moon's portrait poem describes him as "The Immortal Monster". Note the 'The', as in a singular denotation, suggesting that Toffee is somehow unique even among his own kind.

That said the whole "The Immortal Monster" part could also be referencing how he doesn't seem to age. Or it could be both, maybe he has unusually powerful regenerative abilities and doesn't age and the statement in the poem is referring to both since put together it's basically saying he can not ever die.

Usually if you have one eye constantly shut like that while the other one is open and blinking normally it means it's swollen shut as a result of some sort of force trauma. It's a very classic way to illustrate a black eye. Especially since in her portrait she has both eyes normally open, so it's not her natural state.
