I really like the concept and especially the designs, but there's no need to be conservative with speech bubbles unless you go full Bendis. The third bubble especially threw me off when the second girl said "um..."

But keep up the good work though. I'll definitely be following your comic.

Ahem, made official logos for my 4 main comic book projects.

FATES CHAOS (2017, LAUNCHING SOON!)

*This project evolved from a high fantasy swords and sorcery story on an alien planet to a solid down to earth sci-fi western with a few fantasy elements still left in, minus the swords and sorcery. There is no magic in this story. Lots of half demons though like vampires and werewolfs in a word full of gun slinging cowboys some of which, have lazer pistols...
-----

DEMON FUZE a blaze in the western sky (2017, LAUNCHING SOON!)

*This project evolved from a punk band that found demon guns that turned into rings they wore on there fingers when they werent fighting to a full on super sentai power rangers type of thing complete with giant robots, monsters, and ofcourse demons. Hell yeah this is my main project, even though ive been working on FATES CHAOS a lot longer there is just something about this one that I have a lot of unholy faith in if ya know what I mean.
----

G.G.Z. (2017, LAUNCHING SOON!)

*This project evolved from a goth boy who could open magical door ways and used doors as his main weapons to fight monsters and eventually fell in love with a
magical bat girl, to a super unique story about goth girls and b-b-q stuff, yeah! For real!
----

METEOR RANDOM *(2017, LAUNCHING SOON!)

*This project is about a young boy who has his life flipped upside down by a strange meteor that turned everyone in his city town into weird alien monsters, and
he is the only one with equally weird monster alien powers to defeat all the monsters and return life back to normal. Whatever that is.
----

*NOTE: My TROPE DYKES project is a side project and not really a webcomic or anything, just a joke comic featuring the trope dykes whenever I feel like it I guess.

Arms aren't THAT long man. Eva's hands in her pocket is feasible with the current style.

>>
>>90181009
yeah it's just something to keep an eye on that's all. Nothing wrong with going kinda lalaloopsy with it.
Another thing I would watch for though is how low the knees are. If they aren't roughly in the middle of the leg, that'll always look a little odd. ditto the arms. Imagine holding a bag over your shoulder, if your forearm is 20% longer than your humerus.. that'll be harder to draw is all
I love their cute rounded square faces, reminds me of Weekenders. it's a style we don't see often enough

These are girl's name i can come up with. Cosette is not a name I reccomend, it is associated with victor hugo and is never used. It's like if you called your kid "anakin". Which was used in france.

Giselle's fucking ugly, mate. Manon for the win.

Heres an alternative logo style, going for a black and white yin and yang thing, but ultimately I think plain white looks best for an official logo.

Also the main character drawn in a manga style and a cartoon style. The cartoon style is the official style im going for with this project, full blown cartoon!

He is a mexican boy with random meteor(tm) monster soccer powers. He coughs up a golden soccer ball of pure kick ass magical alien power and beats the crap out of random meteor(tm) monsters ff10 tidus kick ball style! awwww yeah son its going to fucking awesome and have weird shit in it none of you fuckers ever seen before and be of a super polished top quality. like you going to see the first couple of pages and be like damn bones, why isn't this a show on nickelodeon or cartoon network man, go pitch this shit and get rich and famous already.

The whole "anakin" shit is people who wants to have "unique names" so french people call their trash kids "djaysonn" "emerson" "johnny" "clitorine"
There's a french blog exposing these "unique snowflake" names, it's pretty hilarious
>>
>>90181573
>clitorine
lol
>>
>>90181573
well see, therein lies the problem. you can't be unique by being shitty. you have to be unique by being cool. the first person who thought to name their kid after the hero jason had a pretty good idea. the next sixty thousand should have been more creative.
in any case, i think that problem is pretty universal. At least it's a major problem in the states. mainly among the super poor and the super rich

METEOR RANDOM is gong to be fucking huge. HUGE! Very excited about it.
>>
>>90181549

The cult is using "nazi human expirement" style sci fi to try and create the antichrist and they developed a way to give people powers. MC finds out they've figured it out and steals some of their serum for himself. I have some more details in my head but that's the gist. The powers aren't too ridiculous, probably the most OP thing any character is gonna get is lightning stuff.
>>
>>90181539
How does college application go over there?
Same app process as here, or are there special loop holes to go through, or what
>>
>>90181602
if you do, they THINK of themselves as rich, and live in a dainty little suburb community, or an area pretending to be.
>>
>>90181620
oh crazy
okay so the main character's name is X, he basically has jesus powers, that... that has to work somehow. X is the first letter of christ in greek. i also feel like I want to make a pun on him fighting a cult, like.. countercult-er. but.. no.
come to think of it isn't that captain america's backstory in the 90s spider-man? well anyway, seeing as you probably mean 'the beast' rather than 'the' antichrist (not a thing), you could possibly use a title involving that.. even if it's kind of an overused title word. I feel like nobody has ever used 'counterbeast' as a title before.
>>
>>90181583
it's real.

>>90181585
Yup. You're right on this. I know super rich kids with names from old books from the middle ages lol.

"Alyannah" That's a name too.

Kaellya, Menphys, Nalla, SAKURA. Arwon.

>>90181623
Well, registration is a two step process: You apply for a degree, they accept you, then you pay, and the second step is choosing your courses. For master's degrees and phd, there's a selection. You apply, they may not accept you.

College is less expensive in france. First year costs like 300E when I was studying. Master's are like 500E.
>>
>>90181623
I remember in french class the way they described postsecondary education in france it sounded a lot like japan. but somehow I can't imagine any french people ever being stressed enough to kill themselves.
>>
>>90181693
well those last four are okay.
>>
On the subject of French, I came up with a naming gag when I was 11 and working out my comic's premise and I don't think it's especially funny anymore but I'm too attached to the names.

The idea is that the country is primarily English speaking and French is uncommon enough that you can't really find a speaker in a smaller town, so when a French (possibly Québécois) group visits a small town the locals are fascinated by their odd speech. The visitors are amused that they're so enraptured by their language that they give them a quick lesson in the basics and leave a vocabulary list.

The locals don't have any reason to learn it, but love the sound of it and some decide that they want to give their children French names. Since they don't actually know anything about French culture, they just pick words off of the vocabulary list, resulting in local kids being named things like "Chevre" and "Espoir".

Is it too much? The main impact it'll have on the story is that one prominent side character will be named Enchante.
>>
>>90181687
Oooh, I like counterbeast. I might go with that if I can't think of anything better in the next few days.

As far as my plot goes, I've been bouncing around variations of this idea in my head since middle school or so, and I want to make something I can cram all the shit I think is cool into.
>>
>>90181732
I feel like that's kind of an implausible concept unless the country in question was some kind of time-displaced RPG village.. which would be hilarious.
>>
>>90180212
>>90180246
here
When it comes to writing how do you prevent yourself from moving to fast?
When it comes to comic writing i think less is more but don't wanna have to little or too much
How do you find a nice middle ground
>>
>>90181928
it's tricky, when you first start out you're so eager that you tend to rush things along. Try to write all your ideas down but don't go through with them right away, try to burn it slowly and build up a buffer
Then once you're settled in, you tend to have the reverse issue... write down all your ideas and expanded dialogue and all that, but carefully prune out the ones that aren't as good
>>
>>90181829
It's not something I want to explain too precisely but the idea is that it's a fantasy land that gets a lot of unexpected transplants from North America, hence the Québécois being considered but French not being more wide-spread.

English being their main language to start isn't... SUPER well-reasoned. Generally it's that so many of the transplants were English speaking Americans and Canadians for the last few hundred years that it came to dominate the culture. It's also because the transplants have been ascribed a certain cultural status that the government wants to honor with an easier transition to life in their country, thus more formally enforcing the language shift.
>>
>>90182089
oh okay that works great then.
it'll help if the english they speak has drifted a little. give it one or two quirks, and/or some old holdovers from whatever they spoke before.
>>
>>90182117
Yeah, I've been considering tossing in some quirks or slang but I'm honestly not sure what I could do to alter it that wouldn't come across as cheesy. I'd consider dialogue a strong-suit of mine but not as much if I have to juggle invented dialect differences, especially since I have close to zero tolerance for wacky fish-out-of-water shenanigans. Tough to reconcile with a lean toward pseudo-realism...
>>
>>90182226
think about ways english changes in isolated areas, ruralisms, terms that kids screw up because they don't know what they mean ("For all intensive purposes" kinda shit). you can make it really subtle, I'd suggest kinda like Wheel of Time writing

It's a long hard journey learning this piece of shit language, but we all appreciate it. it's not our fault, we didn't pick our language, we just tried to take over the world and succeeded. some of the founding fathers seriously proposed making the national language hebrew. >>
>>90184093
The lack of line variety makes everything look dull, the blocky designs look less than stellar. You need thinner linework, better grasp on proportions on backgrounds, and more details. For instance, on fluide glacial, the french equivalent of MAD magazine, there's a comic artist that uses IKEA instruction-style illustrations to draw his comic. I can't find a picture, but everything relies on thin lines and detailed backgrounds. Here it looks like that teacher's hiding behind a huge tetris block and that door is so tiny, even a fucking smurf can't get through. I wish I could see how you draw on paper because i can tell, you're way better on pen and paper than with fucking photoshop, mang.

I'm that french dude who draws big titted ladies with wonky backgrounds so take that how you want, but yeah. It's not that great but it has some potential.

While you really shouldn't be replying to Bones and yadda yadda, this is actually a pretty good improvement. Even without any dialogue, this page has such better rhythm and storytelling than the original. The more detailed shot of the girl's lips has a lot more emotion to it that Bones's, and making the tall dude less catoony but also kinda frumpy is a nice touch.

if you want my onion, the best way to get hands right is to use a simplified version of construction methods. If you go full loomis, you end up with overly mechanical, angular hands with too many creases.. but if you just learn the approximate shape of a palm, suddenly how to add fingers to it becomes a lot simpler.

but if you keep it simple and work with just the most basic shapes and proportions, I think you'll get it a lot more quickly. Then you can work on refinement AFTER the fundamentals are down
interestingly this cartoon style makes the palm a circle, I've seen guides suggesting it be a pentagram, but my palm is a definite wendy's-patty square.

The CYOAs I like best make it clear that the character's main 'self' is ambivalent and unsure in the extreme, and the audience making the choices essentially represents the different considerations their mind makes... So the answer is both. You were unsure, with several voices in your head pushing you this way or that, but you've made the decision based on which one was the strongest, and therefor it's the one you really wanted the most all along.

>>90207250
Well the first thing I think you could improve on is shading those backgrounds. With just one shade of grey for that cave and only a little crosshatching, it looks very flat. You have some lovely lineart on those cave walls, but you need some more shadows to give them depth. Additionally, I think some more/darker shadows on the character would be welcome. Assuming the torch is the only light source in this cave, her face/body would have many more shadows.
Lastly, I'm not sure what's supposed to be happening in the last panel. I'm not sure if it's because of a lack of text or it will be revealed in the next page, but that panel confused me. Is the ring being pulled away by an electro magnet elsewhere in the cave? Did it pop out to give exposition Navi-style? It would be nice to at least see the ring in that last panel to continue the thread of action from panels 5 and 6.
>>
>>90207250
those are really nice cave lines but shouldnt at least the floor be a different shade of gray?
and our hero seems darker than I thought you'd make him
>>
>>90207591
Yup your right, I plan to cross hatch most of the cave and carefully shade the cave. My main concern is making the lighting from the torch. The page is still ultimately an unfinished product and your comic help reassure on what I should do.

And now that you mention it, I should probably try redoing the last two to interpret the coin floating next to the character. It's a male character by the way.

>I have any idea of letting the 2nd to last panel be a zoomed in image of the coin, while pointing to it's position in the last panel.

>>90207677
Don't worry the cave was just shaded in the base color I'm using to differentiated the hues and saturation.

The character is a goblin and I made his skin a bit dark. Why should it be lighter for a reason?

think of something from games that's never been represented, or something you'd change in the games if you could. Something that nobody has ever put in them before, like... a carpenter class that fights with a hammer and saw, or a deadly chef that hits people with frying pans and cleavers and also knows how to cook bombs.

>are you taking after the fanfic or loosely adapting it?

>>
>>90209789
That's not really a good response, but in any case:
I'm not familiar with the fanfic, but I can tell you that ever since I first heard the premise, this comic is exactly what I hoped would come out of it. I don't really care if it's adapting the fanfic or doing its own thing, it's perfect, and I want to see it through. Then again I'm the kind of person that absolutely loves cliche-riddled JRPGs and tears up when the main couple ends up together at the end with no doubt at any point that it would happen.

By saying you want to see how i draw on paper im assuming you want to see how loose i draw so heres some loose sloppy digital drawings i just got finished with

you might like it but its not a look i want for my goth girl comic, it looks kind of the way i want it to but not at all perfect yet, it has a lonf way to go before it looks exactly the way I want it to

i mean this as no disrespect nor im I blaming you for anything but to many times before have i presented cartoon style comics on 4chan only to be pushed and ridiculed into making them more realistic which ends up in the webcomic dying off because of the resigns i make for it.

so from now on if i make something in a cartoon style i make up its stays a cartoon and i will not be swayed or talked into changing it into a realistic comic book style OR and anime manga style.

thats like pitching a cartoon to a network and being forced to make it into a live action tv show instead.

Newest page of my webcomic Nandeno http://nandeno.com/
It's a character-driven comic with really crude/stupid humor that relies heavily on continuity. It used to be mostly one-off gags but I recently started doing more arcs.
This is probably my best looking page so far imo, although in retrospect Jam's pose in the last panel is too similar to the third panel.

>thou
Should be "thee", since the pronoun is the object of the sentence.
You can't use "thou" in every instance where modern English uses "you". If you haven't spent a few hours reading up on the differences between early modern English and current English, I wouldn't advise you to use it in your writing.
>>
>>90213274
Ah really? Damn, I had a cursory google to double check I had the distinction between those two right but I must have misinterpreted it.
>>
>>90213458
The easy way to remember is that "thou" is she and "thee" is her. "thy" and "thine" are like my and mine*.

You wouldn't say "what brings she here?"**, but "what brings her here".

*except that historically, my and mine didn't work quite like they do today - in the KJV bible, IIRC "mine" is also used like "my" if the following word starts with a vowel. Not sure about Shakespeare.

**well, I guess you could, but it would probably be interpreted more as "what's that she's got there" than "why is she here", since it implies that she's the subject of the sentence.
>>
>>90213699
Ah I see, though in this context I intended to use second person. Thou is being used as "you" in a subject form, whereas 'thee' in this situation (from my knowledge) would be 'you' in an object form.
>>
>>90213832
Yes, exactly. Let's look at the basic sentence in normal English.
>"what brings you"

"to bring" is clearly the verb. Something, (the subject) is bringing something else (the object).

Even though it's not very specific and a bit abstract, "what" is the subject of the sentence since it's the thing doing the action of bringing the object somewhere.

And the thing being brought is the object. In this case, "you".

So, you use the object form of whatever pronoun would go there - me rather than I, her rather than she, him rather than he, us rather than we, them rather than they, and thee rather than thou.

Alright, so, this is for a separate project I've been working on, but it's somewhat related to my future webcomic. Recently I've been drawing silhouettes of all the main characters from stories I've created in the past. I'm doing this half as sort of a sendoff as I move on to more original projects, and half as more practice in drawing a variety of characters. These are just the sketch lines since I don't have anything more recent/complete to post, but I'd just like to know if I'm on the right track as far as art is concerned? Are there any glaring faults with the anatomy that I need to work on? I'm really trying to nail the basics before I move on.

Right now I post my comic to Tapastic, Webtoons, and Tumblr. People on Webtoons/Tapastic mainly just read comics on Webtoons/Tapastic. If I only had my dinky little Tumblr hosting my comic, I wouldn't have reached the audience on Webtoons/Tapastic at all, which constitutes the majority of my current audience. I have like ~10 people who read my comic from Tumblr, ~190 on Tapastic, and ~1000 on Webtoons. If I only posted on say, Tumblr, I would have hardly any readers whatsoever. I don't see how "spreading your audience" works as a detriment when my readers mostly use different sites anyways.
>>
>>90222533
Comments more work as a measure of how invested people are in your work. For mots comics, I just take a look at the new page and leave, but for comics I find really enjoyable or intriguing, I'll probably say something. More comments basically show that your readers are actually interested and thinking about your work rather than just reading it passively.

More progress on the number cards I'm working on for videos, obviously 3 is far closer to being finished than any of the others. I'm pretty happy with how different I was able to make them all while also having them work as a set.

Since these will be animated the parts in white (other than the screens) will move separately from the rest to create depth.

in my dreams. though I think a higher percentage of the humor is intentional.
>>
>>90237270
You can still do the designing part yourself. Lots of artists love working off of a poorly-drawn design and then making it good. That's why so many crappy artists and ugly cheap flash cartoons get such great fanart.
>>
>>90237151
I'm the creator, they're the illustrator. I gave the artist a very detailed rundown of what this character looks like and acts like, and with that information, they'll experiment with different interpretations of what the character might look like. Then, we'll go from there.

>>90237378

alright. well you're going to find it pretty frustrating for you and us if you can't actually post anything here, so it's probably best to leave if that ends up being the case.

Ever since I put myself on topwebcomics, Laserwing gets roughly 70ish views every two or three days. I only have like 65 pages made so that accounts for some random finding the comic, reading the archive, then leaving. The extra views are probably people seeing if I've updated lately, or reading one page and deciding they're not interested. I have no idea how many consistent readers I have because my update schedule is really sporadic.

For contrast, my Pokemon blog gets a post every day, 80-150 views daily (up to like 300 if someone does an archive binge), and I've got at least 5-10 consistent rebloggers.

Drawing non-fandom content is suffering.

Nah m8 that's stupid. People make comics and put them on the internet because they want people to read them. Discussing readership and how to attract it is a perfectly valid topic of these threads - heck, we've even got an attempt at a guide to advertising in the OP pasta.
If we applied your idea to art, I shouldn't post my comic pages to the thread because Bones might get upset that it's prettier than his stuff.

You should have a couple of pages already done, say about 50 or so and at least some fans. If even /co/ hasn't herd of your comic, it's a good sign you shouldn't be making one just yet.
As for rewards, assuming you have more skill then the questionable content guy. I'd say commissions or ability to vote on the character you'll draw fan art of. If you can't draw, then gee I don't know, have their name appear in the comic or something.

Thanks! although I'm not a fan of Scott Pilgrim I did like Gideon as a character so that works.

And about the projects, It may sound weird but hear me out.

I've been planning a series of animated game reviews for some time so I can document my collection of obscure 90s PC games that have almost no records online. More recently however I planned out the universe for my multi-media project "Vegabond", which is full of 90s retrofuturism. My issue with Vegabond was I wanted it to be an "interactive" webcomic but I have no audience since I've never made anything big and the atmosphere may be difficult to get people acclimated to. So naturally since they both revolve around 90s sci fi and gaming culture I figured I'd also set the animated game reviews within the vegabond universe as a rough introduction that way there's already some level of familiarity with the setting and aesthetic and I can use it to gather an audience before launching the comic.

With how I've written them this wont be distracting for the game reviews since it shares setting and visuals alone, not any kind of plot. Though if someone likes the videos they'll probably enjoy the comic and vice versa. There will be some slight overlap since Dupe will play a minor role in the comic due to his knack for collecting obscure technology, but overall the projects will stand alone fine in case someone has interest in one but not the other.

May sound retarded but I think the execution will prove sound once the projects are out.

welllll I'm not the best one to tell you, but the agent's head in profile is just wonky. his glasses seem to turn into little nubs, his ear is too high, his nose seems to bei n his eyes, his forehead slopes like mad, his cheekbones are really far forward, it's kind of a mess. Overall I think the head should actually be higher.
Jubie's head is a little off too but it's hard to say how
in her rear-view panel, the ear isn't just flat, it has a distinctive shape to it when viewed from the rear like that (or is her hair covering that part?) and her knee looks really tiny in the perspective shot in the second to last panel, basically just overall tightening is in order. but it's not ugly or anything. Just not up to the standard set by your nice coloring.

I'm writing the precursor to the comic script - a rough screenplay that is the "director's cut," as in, everything I could possibly want for the issue. Then I'll refine it, see the real story and make adjustments/cuts, and then translate it into a comic script.

It's not that interesting, especially visually, but if you want a pastebin of the first few pages, I could oblige.

Working in RGB and converting to CMYK is pretty standard in the webcomics world, so go for it. Just try not to use too many neon pinks, purples, or blues.
300 dpi for printing is fine, but I would go a little larger for web display.
Having 8 weeks of comics is pretty safe, just keep in mind how long it takes for you to draw a comic/how many you post a week. Once you start posting comics, I'd recommend to try to keep that 8-week buffer going for as long as you can, because you never know when something will pop up and keep you from drawing for a few weeks.

Good luck, anon. what's your comic going to be about?

Find a writer, Anon. That's what I did.
I was lucky I had a friend who wanted to write comics and is also a great writer, but I am sure there are a bunch of writers looking for artists to draw their comic online, you will just have to go through a few to find a talented one.
>>
>>90268641
One option would be to team up with a writer, but even then that doesn't guarantee quality. If you really want to draw your own stories, try making some short, ~5 page comics to practice writing short stories and comic storytelling before you move onto something bigger. Don't worry if your first draft is shit, find people to critique it for you, try to analyze it yourself to figure out why it's shit. Writing, like art, is a skill that can be learned, just keep practicing.

Thanks! Her name is Hyla and her outfit is stolen from a dead dude at the beginning of the story following a disaster that strikes while she's joining the red/blu faction she's dressed as in those pics. The "dress" is just an over-sized jacket hence it's tucked into her arm covers awkwardly. The AR goggles act as a targeting system that allows her to use guns despite never dealing with that kind of weaponry before. Her main weapon is a giant flyswatter though. Here's a sketch I made of how she looks in her "natural" attire.

>>90270371

Nice!

I just draw her teeth rounded or slightly crooked. She grew up in a sort of space trailer park made of fungus so some elements of her are kind of rough or trashy but she's trying to move past it to be come some kind of action hero. You may like knowing she has a long prehensile tongue though since she descends from some genetically engineered frog-people, she's rather defensive about anything that makes her "less human" though.

>equates jerk-off material with beauty
Not the same thing, and when "beauty" is a cookie-cutter mold of youthful asses in tight pants and Disney princess faces that's just boring.

>people equally do it to the male gender as well
Since this guy's boners seem centered pretty solidly around Overwatch, look at Roadhog, Junkrat, Winston, Torbjorn, and Bastion. Is it unreasonable to ask for female characters that comes as wacky/unsexualized as those guys (bearing in mind that of course they each have their niches but they clearly weren't intended to be the "hot" ones)? Why are those guys included if they're not intended as beautiful sexual objects and that's APPARENTLY needed to enjoy playing as them? Because they're fun and add a pleasant variety to the cast.

Obviously there are plenty of broadly attractive Overwatch dudes, it's just the comparative lack of female variety. As far as I can tell Zarya's and Ana are the only outliers, and they're still very typically feminine/pretty for being musclebound and elderly.

The same issue goes across the board. Most people complaining about Tracer's ass likely wouldn't be as bothered if there was some Junkrat-equivalent greasemonkey gremlin girl in the place of Junkrat, a Torbjorn-equivalent older dwarfish woman in the place of Torbjorn, a boxy robot omnic that's called female because why the hell not, etc. If Zarya was toned but slender or Ana had no wrinkles there'd be more complaining because it'd be even more monotonous. It's not hard to follow.

Exactly my thoughts, actually. I'll probably have to restructure the plot somehow with a classic connect then disconnect format first, maybe even establish clear cut messages I need sent throughout the issue as a whole before doing that.

I think my main problem is that I'm too attached to the climax, and it just doesn't work with the rest of the story. It isn't satisfying, it comes out of nowhere. I either need to change the climax, or change the rest of the story to fit the climax.

Thanks. Ranting about this actually gave me an idea.

Wow, you are such a fucking retard it hurts.

>Most people complaining about Tracer's ass likely wouldn't be as bothered if...
No, they would find something else to be bothered with. If they made Mei as fat as Roadhog they'd be complaining that she was there to be made fun of. The fact is, people who complain about representation should be outright ignored because they don't know what the fuck they're talking about.

Battleborn bends over backwards to cater to that type, giving "varied head structures" and "varied body types" that are so warped they look ridiculous. They don't fit conventional beauty at all and just look ugly.

And guess what, no one bought the fucking game. Not even tumblr-ites, who they were clearly going for, or feminists, who they were pandering to. People who complain about sexism and that kind of garbage on the internet DON'T BUY THINGS THAT ADVOCATE FOR THEM. They end up buying Overwatch too, probably to complain about it more.

More businesses and designers are ignoring Tumblr in 2017 and we'll see a marked improvement for it. Don't like it? Then actually go out and support the shit that makes stuff for you. But you won't, no one will.

Because no one actually likes that fucking trash.

There's nothing wrong with a cute Disney-esque female character, and I don't personally mind Jessica Rabbit types if they have a good personality - say, Jessica Rabbit. I would just love to see more outright ugly female characters for the sake of variety.

>>90285287
>If they made Mei as fat as Roadhog they'd be complaining that she was there to be made fun of
I have to disagree with you there. When I say "most" that accounts for the very picky minority that'd still have a contrary opinion. Since you're bringing up a Gearbox game yourself, go and see how many people on Tumblr thought Ellie from Borderlands 2 was offensive. She looks a lot like a female Roadhog as far as size goes, and she's definitely not "pretty", but she's universally praised there as great fat representation for her characterization. An obese super-scientist with a cute personality? You're strawmanning if you really think they'd have a bad thing to say about that.

You're right about those characters looking ridiculously warped, and that's the problem. You can have a non-attractive character who doesn't look like a horrible caricature. Battleborn was a case of poor stylization AND the poor timing of going up against a hyped-up new Blizzard property, and that's what tanked it. If all your friends are buying one multi-player game and you don't want to drop a good $60 twice in a month, you'll end up buying the same game they did.

Even the "ugly" Overwatch characters like Roadhog and Junkrat have their own visual appeal. That shit just looks bad from a design standpoint, and your inability to distinguish between intentionally breaking from standards of beauty and unintentionally making ugly designs shows you don't even know what the people asking for representation are talking about.

Honestly, Tapastic really isn't that bad of a site. It lacks site customization and makes you scroll through comics instead of reading them page by page, but other than that it's perfectly serviceable. It has a healthy community with plenty of creators and readers, lets you upload some pretty large files, and is pretty simple to use.

Another site worth checking out is Webtoons, which has many of the same problems Tapastic has, as well as smaller file size limit. The plus side is that the userbase is much larger, which helps you get some more exposure.

That's a pretty broad question there.
"Portrayal" is a term you can use about a whole host of different problems - from "what do badgers look like" to "how do I make this scene chaotic yet easily readable" to "how do I avoid making my heinous main character sympathetic without letting the audience forget they're not a good person"?
I mean, the answer is "yes" regardless, because everything about comics takes work to figure out if you want it done right, but I don't know what you're going to gain from the answer.

Ok, this time is the right one.

As I was saying (in a now deleted post), I'm back to work in my shitty fancomic after an hiatus of about a month because stuff with more priority happened. As I also said a month or so ago, I'm sticking to draw my pages and let them as if I were drawing with my markers. That means not fixing everything.

But I did fix something now, before reposting the right pic. I'm truly hopeless.
>>
I think I'm going to letter my comic by hand when I get around to starting it. Does anyone else here do this? Am I a madman?
>>
>>90292602
i respect the policy of pushing through, but lemme ask you, are you doing it because you think you have a problem with over-fixing things? and if so, do you do it on each object while drawing it, or once the whole thing is finished? because whichever it is, I suggest trying to fix things in the other phase instead. you can still have a general policy of pushing ahead instaed of nitpicking
>>
>>90292651
plenty of us do. with varying results. it lets you hand-control size, emphasis, and a ton of other effects, and I think that's worth it. I just suggest sketching yourself some straight lines to write on so it doesn't go all slanty like mine used to.
that said though if you DON'T need to frequently do a lot of unusual things with your text, then you might as well type it. Maybe even make a font out of your handwriting, that's a thing
>>
>>90292651
Nah, I do it. Takes about an hour per page.
>>
>>90292729
i'm planning on buying an ames guide and learning how to use it. i want do the art entirely in traditional media, and adding in text on computer to hand-drawn stuff has always looked weird to me. can't explain why.
>>
>>90292907
it can definitely contrast, depending on the font used, how neat the art is, how solid the linework is.. yeah.
>>
>>90292670
>are you doing it because you think you have a problem with over-fixing things?
Yeah, mostly. I also like how it looks a bit better.

>and if so, do you do it on each object while drawing it, or once the whole thing is finished?
If I see something too wrong while drawing it, I usually delete the whole thing in certain item, and start again. But generally, I start to fix things after drawing (with "ink") a whole panel.

And then, sometimes, when the following panels are done, I still fix things again because they don't fit one with each other enough. And then, if I get some advice here, I fix whatever it is. And then, if I have some idea, I add stuff. And them...

I fix too many times. I must stop. I didn't fix that much when I was inking with black markers.

> because whichever it is, I suggest trying to fix things in the other phase instead. you can still have a general policy of pushing ahead instaed of nitpickin

Yeah. I'm trying to just fix stuff just once a time and not to polish too much details. But you can guess I'm having a hard time. Maybe if I put myself a deadline for each page, I can control myself.
>>
>>90293011
>delete the whole thing
there's your problem. There's nothing wrong with being fussy and careful, but you never throw the baby out with the bathwater. I know it can be hard to fix that kind of habit, but if you can learn art this well you can learn not to be so hard on yourself.
>>
>>90293325

>I prefer this and them pronouns you shitlords

What's your thoughts on comics that start in media res to hook you, then "flashback" (no narrator from the future though) that shows how shit went down, and the climax is seeing what happens after the intro?
>>
>>90294377
Linking the end of the flashback to the current point is always hard to work well. I like in media ress stories, but not so much when they put in flashbacks to tell the untold story until that point because most of the times they're not too well transitioned.
>>
>>90292907

Good lord I don't know whether or not I am incorporating the right kind of lighting here...

I know the torch won't be lighting the entire cave, and right now at least the cave closest to the left can be seen. With that said what about the other objects in the environment, would this be a proper or even a realistic depiction of a small light in a cave...?

I know this isn't going to be an ultra realistic comic, but i want the environment AND the action to be AMAZING!

from what i've seen, the 'spotlight' in the middle should be more gradiated instead of almost stark white, and the wee gob-lad should be casting a very long shadow at all times, just like that rock is
that's some interesting detail in the cave, some kind of... stretchy webby stuff? maybe sheet-webs? nobody ever draws sheet-web spiderwebs ever. or tangle. or sheet's big brother, funnel. always orbs.

I've been reworking some future characters and chapters and I feel like I finally found a way to make the overarching plot make sense, which is nice. I just want to be able to draw out those characters and chapters, but that will be months and months away.

>>90296555
A small torch probably wouldn't light up a cave that much realistically, but I think your lighting works as is. You already have some pretty tight and detailed lineart for those cave walls, and if you made the lighting more realistic they'd be near completely in shadow. I think it's alright to fudge the lighting here just to show off the quality of the artwork, since it isn't distracting.

>>90296771
Agreed on the long shadows, though. With just one, low to the ground light source everything around it is going to be casting long, dark shadows.
>>
>>90296876
That's good to know. I've enjoyed the little slice of adventure so far, but i was hoping it would go a little somewhere soon, to keep me interested.

>Publishing Questions

I normally only browse /ic/ so I didn't want to shit up this board with a new, potentially off-topic thread. I have a project I've been working on for a long time and I'll soon be ready to start publishing it, and I'm hoping this is the right place to ask.

My pages are wide format (16:9) and need a minimum width of 1440. I just want one page displayed at a time with "first, previous, next, latest" buttons, an archive page, and whatever simple shit you'd expect from any comicbook/manga/webcomic, and being able to schedule posts in advance would be a big plus.

I have minimal experience with webdesign so I'd like to take the layman's approach of using extant services/templates, but I've found that sites that a lot of people use/recommend (tapastic, webtoons, tumblr, etc.) have hard-coded maximum page widths of 800-1280.

I'm currently planning on getting hosting from Dreamhost, buying a few domains, and getting wordpress and comicpress, and hoping that I can get it to do exactly what I want or that my limited experience with HTML/CSS is enough to butcher it into doing what I want.

>Hosting + domains + Wordpress + Comic press, am I missing anything?
>Is this a decent approach? Are there a sites/templates that would fit my needs I should be looking at instead?
>And if I get my own hosting, should I host my images somewhere like imgur and embed them on my site to save on bandwidth, or is this unnecessary? Or is some other reason I shouldn't?

I'm definitely an amateur in regards to publishing and website related shit, any related advice would be greatly appreciated.
>>
>>90298134
I hate to say it, but tumblr might actually be for you. Your images are so wide it would be difficult and annoying to scroll sideways to read them, but tumblr can be set up so that your 1440-wide comic would be a little 700-ish-wide thumbnail, and then when you click it, it opens up each panel and cycles through them as you continue clicking. It requires designating each panel as its own area in some manner, I don't know how, and I don't know about navigation buttons or archive, but I'm sure someone here does since it's a popular platform that requires a LOT of alteration to serve even so-so as a webcomic platform
>>
>>90298134
The con of hosting images off-site is that if the other host goes down, your comic goes down. I'd recommend using https://tinypng.com/ to compress all your images to save on bandwidth.
Also, I'm just wondering, why do you need your pages to be so large? Most horizontally oriented webcomics I know are only around ~1000 pixels wide, 1440 pixels seems like it could be a little overwhelming.
>>
>>90298213
It's a good idea, but even if I could manage that (I did fiddle with tumblr for a while, I found out about their 1280 width limit the hard way), it wouldn't work for my series. I've got a lot of full-page panels (which is why I decided to go with 16:9 ratio), anything smaller than 1440 will make some of the text/context illegible.

For those interested, there's a pretty easy to implement and use comic theme for tumblr, if I didn't need 1440 minimum width, I would definitely just use this: https://www.tumblr.com/theme/39018 (comes with "first, last, random, next, latest" buttons, an archive page, and it's easy to add pages like an "about" page or w/e you want).

>>90298550
I draw the pages in 5760x3240, and want them to read well at 1920x1080. I'm aiming for something that's half "art-book" half graphic novel. A lot of pages are one big panel, and I plan on having some pages available in 1920x1080 (and maybe other resolutions) for people who like wallpapers. The most I can scale that down to is 1440x810 without losing a noticeable amount of quality and legibility.

Thanks for the tinypng link, I'll check it out.

If it makes you feel any better, the monitor I'm drawing on is a few years old, it's 1600x1200. The 4:3 ratio of classic CRT monitors.

And by "read well" I meant visibly - that objects, text, details, etc., would be easily comprehensible - not that the series would necessarily be read as 1920x1080 images on screen (though if I eventually do a print version, those pages will be printed in a higher resolution than 1920x1080).

I'm late to this discussion tangent but making your characters conventionally attractive is kinda just limiting yourself. You could have a webcomic about a living pile of garbage and maggots and there will be a willing audience of weirdos who want to fuck your garbage maggot because it's their perfect waifu. The traditional normie standards of attraction aren't worth much and variety in your character designs is more interesting to look at and more interesting to draw.
>>
>>90299641
hardly, it's just that i have to draw the line at a certain point when it's clear we are not speaking the same language, and something I see as utterly disconnected from reality makes it impossible for me not to be 'pulled out' of a story. especially a fantasy RPG kinda thing. it's different (but still unwelcome) in a futuristic scifi setting
people for whom that sort of thing is normal shouldn't want me as a reader anyway, i'd eventually get annoying and shit up their comments fields
>>
>>90300186
I suppose it depends on whose conventions. I'm of the mind that if you average out the major conventions over time, but remove everything that differs from age to age, you end up with a good template to start with. And if you want to vary it up more, having a good solid "medium" to work with helps ground those.
That way you don't end up with, say, a belle and a gaston and then suddenly a lefou, with nothing in between.

Your perspective isn't uniform in the second panel. Your horizon line is extremely low, practically on the ground, so the line where the front of the building (with the door) meets the ground should be nearly horizontal, and the position of the barrel implies it's probably little larger than a softball and right next to the camera (and doesn't have a flat bottom). Or Corjander Bjalystock is about 4-5 times as tall as the building the bow-wielding woman is on, and if that's the case, disregard what I just said.

In your last two panels the corner of that foreground building creates a bit of visual confusion, looking like an internal/subpanel. If you break the edge more - have the foreground figure cross the line more, or place some item to break the line (barrel, box, curled poster, gutter-pipe, etc.) - that won't be the case, (keep in mind, speech bubbles and onomatopoeias often aren't enough to break the line, speech bubbles that cross panel lines are commonplace). Additionally, the perspective implies her back is flat against the wall, which means the wall of the building is perfectly perpendicular to the camera. If you added a bit of perspective, and pointed the foreground building at the background building, it would more clearly be part of the same panel, the brain tends to automatically decide "matching perspective, matching scene."

>continued
>>
>>90294377
if it's well done, it can be good. the key is planning, though. it would be terrible if the climax is, well, anticlimactic. this would happen because of bad pacing, too much time spent in the flashback, etc. you just need to plan it well.
>>
>>90300714
>>90301978

>continued:
Consider the methodology of cinematography: having a single perfectly straight unbroken line bisect the entire shot as you've done in the last two panels is typically reserved for conveying some metaphorical meaning, and other elements in the scene would make it clear that both sides of that dividing line are in the same shot. I don't get the feeling that the hiding character coming out into the open is a major metaphorical shift, so creating a metaphor line to cross is a bit misleading/distracting (though again, I'm only looking at the one page, and maybe that character has only been seen hiding behind buildings for the last several pages and coming out from hiding is a major development, if that's the case, disregard).

Also, while it's hard to tell exactly where your horizon line is in your last two panels (I'm perceiving it at about the waist of the foreground figure in the second to last panel), it implies those distant background buildings in the final two panels (which are missing in your second panel), and are seven or eight stories tall. Not sure you'd want them that tall, it doesn't necessarily match the architectural style of the detailed buildings on this page (though it's clearly a fantasy setting, so maybe you did want them that tall).

I really like your application of lineweight, and your level of detail is wonderfully consistent, but I think you overdo it a bit with the line tool, or at least too many perfectly horizontal and vertical lines. I think a minor amount of improvement in perspective would benefit your art dramatically.

Basically just try to surprise the audience. anyone can trick you by making you think there's a joke about the chicken crossing the road, but it turns out there is no punchline, it just wanted to get to the other side.. but what takes some doin' is coming up with some unexpected reason for that road-crossing. especially if the audience is already racking their brains trying to guess (because everyone wants to seem smart and see something coming)

What do you guys do when you're demoralized and have absolutely no motivation to draw?

Our book has been on hiatus since the second of January and we were supposed to come back February 20th but I wasn't able to draw more then one page between December 23rd 2016 to now, and the one I did I needed to redo because I hated the first draft. I did start talking about a second project, it was fun for a while but I just feel guilty for not working on the book I should be.

I did treat the book like a job and doing so, working because I have to, not because I want to, is something I've done for fifteen years, this was supposed to be fun and really isn't anymore.

I work traditionally and have sat down to doodle, don't do anything finished and it's been helpful but again, all it ends up doing is making me feel guilty for not spending that creative energy on what I should be.

I've read comments a few people have made and it does get me somewhat motivated, I like that our book has a fan or two, but it isn't enough.

Honestly, I want to do something more like Catwoman, something with dynamic action, the last eight pages of the book I do was talking heads. The first few pages of the new script is talking heads. I can only make people chatting in an office or a garden interesting for so long.

don't listen to this, you'll burn out. just try to have fun with it
>>
>>90302852
How much freedom does the script give you? Just make the people chat in their office while having a nerf gun fight, or something
>>
Script isn't ironclad, I have made changes before, where the conversations are fairly serious I can't do the nerf gun thing. I have told my writer to come up with a Danger Room setting so the characters aren't just standing around yakking but that hasn't come to pass yet.

Is that a quote from walt disney himself? For the most part if you want to get anywhere with art you should take it as seriously as you would any other job. If your aspiration was to be a doctor, architect, or engineer I don't think "just try to have fun with it" would help you much, likewise with any type of professional artist. This is of course very different if this is just a hobby but if that were the case I don't think you'd care if you weren't productive.

I usually draw for at least 8 hours every day whether I'm "motivated" or not just like If I had to go into work somewhere. If you have an off day draw bad until you draw good. If you have to force yourself to draw regularly then it's probably not something you actually want to do with your life.
>>
>>90302858
This >>90302778 doesn't mean "only work every minute of every day." Decide how much work you want to be doing, and do it. Make a schedule. Keep track of your hours. You'll feel better about yourself and be more resilient to bouts of apathy or melancholy when you look back and see your consistency and productivity. But you won't feel it if you know you cheat by browsing /co/ and counting it a work hour, cut out distractions.
>>
>>90303165
I think it's a fair argument to say that many of the problems in the professional world are due to only people who treat things as a job being hired for said job, even if someone else who was so lazy they only worked half as much, but so effective they got 3 times as much done. maybe buildings would suck less if the architects had more fun, and maybe heart surgeons wouldn't be so known for dying early of stress
probably not though. you'd probably just have shitty houses and dead heart patients. but it's worth at least looking at. Different tactics for different folks.
>>
>>90302858
And burning out is somehow worse than the idea of waiting for some mysterious motivation.

I understand that for most people it's not a job, it's a hobby, but you'll still want to get into the habit of working with some kind of regularity. Set goals for what you want to achieve each day and do them. It might not always be your best work but for most people comic art isn't going to be your best quality work.

Once you get into the rhythm of doing the work comfortably you can pick up the pace. Work on a buffer. Work on quality.

>If you have an off day draw bad until you draw good. If you have to force yourself to draw regularly then it's probably not something you actually want to do with your life.

No one likes to hear it but it's true. It doesn't mean you have to stop drawing all together but you might want to do some soul searching.

>>90303245
Drawing isn't heart surgery. No one's life is at risk if you're a colossal fuck up at drawing.
>>
>>90303328
>I understand that for most people it's not a job, it's a hobby
It's weird to hear that. I don't just don't consider hobbyists when talking about this kind of stuff, and neither do the people I talk to, usually.

Wont argue there and obviously art inherently varies from person to person but for the most part I doubt anyone will ever "make it" if they don't treat it seriously or have to force themselves to do it. I think no matter what if you have to force yourself to make art it's going to be bad and you're probably looking for an "easy way out" even though art is one of the most difficult ways to make money. Needless to say if they have to motivate themselves to draw stuff they're probably not having fun with it anyway.
>>
>>90303373
I think most of us are waiting for it to become easy, and THEN putting in the work. As if we've saved up our energy to use when the time is right. And while that may not be the fastest method, it has eventually worked for me. I've gotten to the point where I truly can draw for hours every single day and never get tired.
But I think everyone looks at art differently, too. For some it feels like artisanry, for others we're just trying to pry the goddamn statue out of the block of marble. it's in there. get out you fuck. i am displeased with how not-you this marble block is.
>>
>>90303406
For what it's worth I don't think Michelangelo was grinning and singing the whole time he painted the Sistine chapel. Laziness masqueraded as "lack of motivation" has no place in any field, art included.
>>
>>90303368
I tend to anticipate what people will say in response and try to address that. A lot pf people go into "it's just a hobby" as a way to argue about having to put in work to get better.

Personally I would hope if someone is here in a thread topped by a long ass advice post they want to take it seriously but we also have bones, Cold Fusion and dewd proving me wrong.

Pic related is the type of response I would normally expect to see in response to statements like that. Or just "kys."

what is it about these kind of retards that make them want to use a trip ?
>>
>>90304247
It makes sense though. They're into art for a sense of fame and glory without earning it in any way, not because they actually care about what they're creating. They use trips because it gives them a sense of identity and "fame" without really trying. Id like to act like Im special and excluded from this trend but I'm not really sure I am. Nobody has criticised me for using one though so I've never really stopped.

Ive been meaning to ask, why do most (or some if "most" isnt accurate) webcomic people update page-by-page?
>>
>>90301517
>>90301287
Dude, your black and white drawings are so charming, but it hurts my eyes so much to look at your comic... I didn't even realize how cute were your drawings before because they are burried under a deep layer of ugly rendering and terrible color choices.

Frequent updates keep people from forgetting you're around, and the people who prefer to read a bunch of pages at once can just check back less frequently.

You know that's not true, right? This is the first time a person with a name has actually shown some kind of agreement with this way of thinking. But if you're in the threads you've seen yourself that it's just a few shitposters making it up.
