Hey /hyw/ ,

I took one anon's advice and made some changes to my most recent update. I'm moving into grey scale and color, but I've been told by /ic/ that my fundamentals are shit, so I'm redrawing my first chapter as well. Here's the updated update, with the first chapter as in to follow.

I don't mean to be an ass, and I'll admit I'm going off memory but...I don't really see the difference. The old man's hands appear flat and as if they're rendered in a different style and level of detail, the characters' poses are stiff, some of the composition is questionable (a kid saying they have to swim in places an adult would walk is shoved in a corner, has more of their body visible, and is standing straight up? what???), everyone looks like they're viewed at roughly eye level even when they're not, the panel composition and flow seems likean afterthought...

Some of the backgrounds are nice, and the fish was done well, but the page lacks coordination and your characters don't feel like they're actually there.

You're not an ass. I'm not a graphic artist, I'm a draftsman and sculptor. This is a pet project of someone who is self taught and never took a drawing class in my life. I have no ego, so I just ask that if you must tell me I'm shit, then be specific so I can improve.

I set out to make a test comic because I knew I was not good enough for real comic art, but I want to get better so I practice and share.
>>
>>90054987

that's super fucking funny. That was the first thing I did when I started redrawing the thing, except I took out the bend and gave a full page to the deer dragging, with better perspective.
>>
>>90054713
Nah, it's not magic. It's just supposed to be raining. I haven't gotten around to drawing most of it yet.

Actually, since magic is kind of the topic of the thread, DnD-style flashy magic is one of the things I really wanted to get away from with Carrion Girls. I mean don't get me wrong, I like wizards flying around and having magic multicolored laser fights as much as the next guy, but for something set in the dark ages I feel like something more mystical and dark fit better.

So (human) magic in Carrion Girls centers on the unseen worlds of fate and "spirit", rather than physical reality. Rather than throwing fireballs, you do mystical bullshit things like tattooing a horse's head and hiding it under the floorboards of someone you don't like to give them cancer.
>>
>>90056661
yeah I like me some flashy magic but sometimes the pure workable methodical hexy traditions are fun too, and for a comic like this they're way more appropriate

wait, is she not using that kind of magic to track the kitty? she mentioned using its fur or something, right? it's not like, whichever direction the water drips off her hand is where the kitty is?
>>
>>90056787
Yeah, I'm not completely clear on how she's supposed to be doing it, but you'll notice she's got a little charm with some red string and some black hairs dangling from her ring finger. Probably she's carved Svarti's name or some kind of magical stave on the side of the little wooden tile that we can't see, filled the carving with a few drops of blood and the way the tile points or pulls tells her where to go.
>>
>>90057006
ohhhh a hanging compass, okay. I'm sure that'll be more clear once it's finished

I've seen them both used very well in comics.
The more "unseen" magic tends to add this mysterious aspect to the world, as it's something the reader can't quite understand.

Personally I'm actually a big fan of flashy, at least in my comic (never been a fan of magic lasers, though). I definitely agree that the more occult-y type stuff is more fitting for CG
>>
I tend to ask myself questions that I think the audience would ask should i publish my work today (not that i'm even very far along in the process), that and letting scenes play out naturally in my head, has really helped me out. Here's an example.

>Setup, I and a friend had created a LOT of characters and scenarios. They were all Trope heavy
>Had a ninja girl character whose parents had died (I can name 3 anime we could have stolen that from.
>Most of these Trope characters
>One of the core characters is Desmond Estus, born in Great Brittan, comes to Japan on a mission

>Audience Question
>Why is a Brit doing work in Japan?
Well, his employer assigned him
>Does his employer have Japanese people who could do missions?
Loads
>Why didn't they assign one of those? They wouldn't stick out too much
Its like the Frog in the Pot analogy, outsiders would be more likely to view their surroundings objectively
>Would any of the Japanese employees have a problem with this?
Probably

This brings in Ako, whose Clan, once prosperous, is in financial ruin after all of their best ninja were killed. Ako has taken it upon herself perform missions outside of her age appropriateness to raise money while her older brother runs the clan. (Her brother outranks her but is more of an admin, as is the case for historical ninjas). Ako has beef with Desmond because the contract requires him to work on her families land and as far as she was concerned, the contract should have been her family's to begin with. She became a character fueled by money, but not for greed. I'm satisfied enough with this progress for her character to incorporate her back into my story.
>>
>>90052245
Your rendering is definitely getting better and better, don't ever feel that you're putting too much effort into small details, so long as you're learning. It's through these long trials that we pick up better work flow, tricks, or just muscle memory that help us reduce time spent while maintaining the same level of art quality.

I am eager to see how far this painting style will develop, it looks great and unique so far.

Completely separate from the previous issues, I gotta say it's a bit off-putting that there are things closer to the camera than the character but with way thinner lines.

i love your notes and little mouse so much.
my pressure sensitivity has problems with that too, it just cuts off at a certain point.
>>90062420
huh, there's something about this guy.. he seems so solid and hard, but his silhouette has almost no ridges. even the plates under the pauldrons are so thin they're almost streamlined.. the torso-piece doesn't have a ridge where it stops, it's just flush with the underneath bits... the pauldrons themselves seem paper thin, the ankle and knee joints all have a totally smooth connection and the arms are quilted leather(?) so they bend flexibly too. the phalanges of the fingers have some thickness, but the handpiece is flush either open or closed. am I way off base?
I guess if I'm fair, real suits of armor usually fit together very snugly too, but they weren't just begging for some thick-platey arthropod-jointery like this is.
>>
>>90062407

Thanks! Yeah, I feel like it comes in cycles - you learn to do something new that looks good but takes forever, you get effective at it, and then you realize you could do something that takes even longer but looks a teeny bit better.
Of course, sometimes you learn something that simultaneously saves a ton of time and looks way better and that's just the best.

It's not like they're covering anything important in this page.

>>90062762
Then you use the fast methods for the bits that aren't very important so you can make the important bits even better. For instance, hand drawing every leaf on a tree can look a little better than using a leaf brush with a few hand-painted finishing touches, but it takes longer and it doesn't add much.

>>90063000
Neat.
Nice values except for panel 5 - Birdman's head needs a darker background.
I feel like you're having trouble keeping the details of the mouse-design consistent.
Using the square brush is not what you should be doing if you want the background to be unobtrusive. Try an airbrush.
Honestly, how much time did you save by copy-pasting the mouse in the last panel? At least draw the tail different.
>>
>>90063000
Is this the final product of page 1 cause if it is it's good.

Though i'm not gonna lie to you i really can't take these characters seriously the contrast in the suit and the actually animal wearing it... it's a really awkward juxtaposition.

well, I'm not sure. I've redone the story a lot since I made this months ago but my problem is that I keep changing things, and I'm starting to think I should go with the direction this particular iteration started in and try to meet myself halfway with doing and concepting.

hmmm. I kinda don't mind that it's awkward? At it's absolute basic fundamental heart this story is supposed to be about cute(variably) characters in a kind of edgelordy universe.

though your exact phrasing is "actually animal" which is confusing because of how damn stylized they are. Not to dismiss your perspective, I just don't feel I understand. It's a dang furfag comic!

pic related, a sort of newer design but not technically the same character, tho from this thread's perspectively I doubt that really matters.

see that looks a lot cooler. it's not so straight upright.
animal heads are usually elongated forward, while human heads are elongated upward, to go with our upright stance.. so furry bodies (especially ratsmen) are best hunched over somewhat, or at least leaning in a battle-ready stance
ESPECIALLY with bent legs like this. the other example has totally straight legs, and apparently plantigrade feet (the bird seems to have them)
while this black-suited fellow is digitigrade and looks way cooler

>>
>>90064205
honestly I kinda have to disagree. there's particular posing and actions that are served better by a plantigrade set up. though maybe I"m so desensitized to furry imagery the visual dissonance is lost on me.
>>
>>90063996
There's a bit of inconsistency here bud...

You see the character you have in the first one >>90063000 are animals with humanoid bodies (nothing wrong with it). But look at your character in the second post although it's humanoid it still has it's animal anatomy a bit.
(Mainly it's hind legs still being mostly animal like)

Also Mice don't have hind legs like dogs, they possess similar hind limbs to us humans in a way but more elongated, designed to crawls and stand on temporarily.
>>
>>90064281

Starting my storytime of one of my earliest and definitely most favorite webcomics thanks to an anon at /wsr/ who got the lost pages from the author
>>
>>90064324
sure, but then you humanize the heads more. You flatten the muzzles, increase the cranium and forehead, make them look more like animal-ish humans instead of egyptian gods
>>
>>90064338
well, six of one, half a dozen of the other. mice are plantigrade but they have long feet and bent knees. We went into this a few threads ago with that guy drawing a cute little mouse guy..
you don't want them to walk digitigrade but they should pose that way for action-readiness, the same way a human does sometimes. once again I gotta point out Scurry as an example

>>
>>90064713
a mouse is a weak creature, a weak stance suits it. that's why Splinter is such an iconic character, the idea of a wise old rat sensei makes so much sense
but the shitty new show makes him 7 feet tall and straight upright like a pole, it's baffling.
I like all three of these, but keep in mind the face is drawn much flatter here and that helps it a lot. also the center one has some issues that would only be appropriate on a goat or horse, so that's right out

>>
>>90066333
From my experience with in-universe retcons, a story-based time shift that affects the archive isn't as fun as it sounds in theory. You'd have to hold out on doing it until you have a sizable audience for the gimmick to work in the first place, and it'd mess up the experience for newcomers.
>>
>>90066333
I've always wanted to do something like that.. but it only works if you actually have a big enough readerbase that someone's going to notice it.
what I'd really like to do is rig up some kind of cookie system kinda like that "you only live once" game, so that it would legitimately show something different after you've read something once. really fuck with the reader.

hmm that's a good amount..
so basically you're saying you'd have a branching archive, but you'd make sure when people go back, they see the alternate one?

I prefer things like.. a really subtle hand or something reaching in just offpanel and affecting something, and then much later on a time traveler goes back and it turns out that was his hand
I never managed to do that, but I did once put a really subtle written note in a panel, then a more clear one in the next panel like "hey look at the previous one" and the subtler easier-overlooked note was like "See?"
>>
>>90066624
That's a good question. Things like that are usually either very subjective or super cliche. I'd say that in general, the fancier the style, the more overbearing and stuck up the person probably is.. they clearly care a lot about their appearance or else they use it as a vehicle to show off how rich they are.
>>
How do these lines look? I want to get the coloring for this page finished tonight but I don't think that's happening.

>>90066624
Try going onto beauty websites, they should have plenty of resources for that. I don't know what kind of hairstyle would represent a stuck up woman, but I'm kind of imagining straight black hair with a bob.

This is looking really good, but a few things seem a little off to me. To me it looks like panels 5 and 6 could be switched with panels 3 and 4. Ms. Mouse here just thrusted the sword into bird dude, right? So wouldn't she have her hands on the sword like in panel 5, before releasing it in panel 3? Plus, going from detail shot to detail shot, to full body seems like a more natural shot progression to me.
Idk, I might have it all wrong. I'm just curious why you arranged those panels like that?

small page update
>>
>>90070551

The perspective looks a bit off on the sidewalk in the bottom right of the last panel, and honestly the whole scene looks kind of weirdly squashed. I feel like if those buildings are meant to be sized appropriately for people, then that is one weirdly massive sedan (or the other way around).

The detailing and use of negative space is great though, keep it up.

lel, no artist has this problem ya dingus

in all seriousness, looks good mang. I think your concern about the line width might be based on how the character's are the thickest in the entire picture, so it kind of seems out of place.

As an experiment, I would try thickening the outer lines of the rock formations and the egg in the foreground, see if that changes your opinion of the character's lineart

What is the best format if my comic is more a graphic novel and not a continuation
>>
>>90071559
Looks like shit, dude.
And if that render took you 14 minutes then all the figures on that page would have taken you about 2.5 hours and they'd still look like shit.

There's a difference between churning out zero-quality comic pages constantly and spacing out pages you actually give a shit about and labor over because you know it makes a difference. You've made your choice there.

>>90071667
Totally depends on the length and what you mean by continuation. What makes you think it'd require a departure from a standard webcomic layout?

so do they actually code in any working characters based on people's designs or do people have to get the animation shiz working themselves.. like they mentioned it has to be able to have at least a walk cycle.. this game sounds interesting. reminds me of cybertown
>>
>>90071757
Nah, that's plenty of pages for the usual format. It'd be refreshing to have a comic that's planned out and pretty much guaranteed to end in a reasonable amount of time.

the repeatability of art like peanuts or 2d game graphics, where a template represented 'a person' and could be customized. That's what inspired me that I even COULD make a comic. Then tweaking that was even more fun
the irony that similarly 'inspired' teenage artists after I grew up would take up the popular hobby of doing a terrible job editing 'doll' templates, when I worked so hard at actually learning how to make my own and keep them consistent, or learn how to copy others while still drawing them by hand..

The game works completely off of what the player puts in it, as long as they have the knowledge to do so, or have someone else do it for them. A higher up's approval for what they put in is also needed.
Obviously there are example characters and tutorials given on how to make your character, and if people are really desperate, they could commission someone else to create their character in game for them.

Also I've never heard of Cybertown until now. I need to do some hard research on that game now, because that seems to work the same way as the game inside my comic. Thanks for telling me about that.

"We" don't dislike Bones. It's a tiny but vocal minority of jealous haters. Bones contributes more content to /hyw/ than 90% of this general and that makes the whiney sister-kissers who never work on their comic angry. They feel inadequate compared to his volume of work, much like they feel inadequate for their tiny penii, and lash out at their better because they cannot even fathom the concept of working on their comic. Sad, really. I almost pitty them.

Hello

I have an idea in mind and want to see it through. I was wondering about digital x traditional art methods. I have no experience with digital but it seems to me easier to color but I don't know, I really like to have the paper in hands. I was wondering if anyone went through this dilemma.

How does everyone else handle (or plan to handle) lore?

Two of my influences in this category are Young Justice and Steven Universe.

YJ had a pretty good lore, not giving you all of the information but leaving hints to character pasts and you don't have to be outright told everything. Season 2 on the other hand began to Irk me, a lot happened in the 5 year gap and it's known to everyone except the viewer, and you're only spoon-fed information as it relates to that story.

Steven Universe on the other hand is close to what I want to do in regards to lore. While there is a 5000 year lore, at least, in regards to the gems on earth, the story feels as though the majority of that time was uneventful. But What i like about it is that Steven represents the viewer, you learn about gem culture at the exact same pace that Steven does.
>>
>>90085011
well that's because there are very few pixels that are sitting totally diagonal to each other, but see how neat some parts of it already look? if you cleaned them up further, they'd be quite orderly.. and at a small size, cleanup is a lot easier
but yeah it's also limiting, while the larger scale would let you go pretty much full Undertale and everyone likes that art. study how those aliased lines look, how their curves work

>>90085029
You mean, like, the details of the setting and characters' backstories?
I don't really spend any time on things that don't contribute to the story. If I can fit something in the background or in a way that indirectly serves the plot (like if the pacing needs a joke to relieve tension, making the joke be informative about the setting is fine), then that's great, but I'm not gonna spend a panel telling the reader about how the setting works unless it's important.

>>90085259
Trace reference if you have to, but don't just use filters - it'll clash horribly with your art.
Also, get good at perspective. Most newb artists neglect it, but it's the most fundamental of fundamentals.

I'm making cards for the characters because there is a large society for the superheroes in RG as the world is overpopulated with them so they register to keep track and gain perks etc, its basically a superhero clubcard and you can buy like a grappling hook with your hero points or something, but I was going to use the cards as bios so the reverse will have a short description.
But I'm not sure about the name of the society I can't think of anything good or witty, Supers United is the only one I could think of so far, or something like Dubmass Supers United

Page 49 being less about my natural skill progression and more on how I am more reliant on 3D programs to set up scenes.

Your pages are getting more and more beautiful. The rendering techniques are also really interesting.

I feel like you're fighting yourself with the quantity and size of your speech bubbles. I feel like I have to peer around them to get a good look at the art.

Have you tried smaller text size, and smaller speech bubbles?

>I was going to use the cards as bios so the reverse will have a short description
I don't really think that's necessary. The front of the card tells the reader enough. A lot can be inferred by the signature, the photo, and the power level.
>>
>>90102333
Yeah, it's a complaint I've heard before and I'm starting to realize how true it is. I think what happens is that during the sketching phase, I work zoomed out so I can see the whole page at once, and so I make the text big enough that it's readable at that size.
I'm also kind of paranoid that people on mobile won't be able to read it if I make the text any smaller, but they'd have to zoom to see most of the details anyway so that's probably stupid of me.

A "cold open" is a movie and tv term for having a scene preceding the title sequence/opening credits. I'm not sure how you'd apply that to a comic.
>>
>>90102969
Maybe he meant 'in media res'
>>
>>90102997
Maybe; if he did, I'd say I don't have any criticisms of that kind of opening, per se.
They're useful tools for instantly engaging the reader so they don't lose interest before they get to the cool part. There's some major pitfalls you need to avoid with them, though;

1, make sure there's a bit of context so the reader cares even if they're not sure exactly what's going on. If you have two people shooting guns at each other for an opening scene, give the audience some idea of who to root for and what the stakes are. It's fine if you mislead them so that the scene has a completely different meaning once the audience knows the full story.

2, if you go back to the beginning afterwards, remember that the reader knows some of what's going to happen. The reader isn't going to feel any tension over the hero being chased by an assassin in the flashback if they know the hero survived to the present, so the scene will need some other source of tension.

The balloons are all popping out of their panels, which tricks the eye about where to read next.
The "I mean, you dont fool cats like you do people, and he's--" baloons leads to the "I didn't know anything for sure" baloon, and that's just wrong.
Your comments make me think you are going for a fast route here, and it shows. Take your time with the lettering, is as important as anything else.

Not last poster, similar question though.

How do you balance out drawing family friendly comics and having porn comics on the side?

IRL I shared my family friendly shit with some close co-workers/friends my age, and I mean IRL, they liked it, word on the grapevine spread, people knew what I made. Then showed my the same people my porno. They were cool with it, but the grapevine spread and one crazy lady made a fuss about it.

I suppose on my site, I should make an about page describing how I like to try out different genres. from Comedy, Action, Fairy Tales to porn.

Most porn I draw is standard straight porn. Or monster hentai. The stark contrast of a fiendish beast makes the female figure stand out more.

The lines are cleaner and the shapes more geometrically sound.

That's really about it. The faces are still built entirely from pre-fab knowledge of caricatures without any actual sense for perspective or position or depth. The proportions change wildly without meaning. Anatomy is nonexistant, as is really any level of consistency. It's just a more advanced version of the same shit.

I feel like the wobbly-lined backgrounds aren't really working here. You've got a very clean style for the character art, so the wiggly, free handed backgrounds just look sloppy and hastily done in comparison. Anyone ever feel like that just because your comic didn't have a strong enough beginning you're never going to really "make it?"
The start of my comic wasn't particularly badly drawn or poorly written imho, even though I've improved since then, but it didn't have much of a hook. I've been putting tons of time and effort into improving the art and story telling of my comic but my comic's still left in the dust every week by some brand new pander-y comic with only a few pages out. I feel like I've missed the window to really gain an audience because I didn't start off as strongly as I could've.

Nice color palette dude, you know how to create an atmosphere that's cozy and feels "real". I get what you see with the backgrounds. I just rushed them on these pages. I don't really like to work with the line too as it looks like my characters seem to be in some sort of IKEA hell or something. I tried many things on my previous comics and what I want is something that would look like slick freehanded backgrounds.
Since the comic takes place in paris, i guess i should get better at drawing hausmanian facades and building, but that shit takes too much time.
Gonna do some field drawing today.

>>90116102
I'm not making a fetish comic man. That's not what I want to.
That's blueballing your audience. If i wanted to do fetish stuff, i'd do an all-out porn one, which would suck with my current ability to draw.

So yeah, I may put less tits on that comic on the future. The first 8 pages are gonna be full of them, but i'm gonna cut it out for the next part.

To be honest, I'm a style guy. First thing I look at when I pick up a comic off the shelf or click on a link is the art style, is it well drawn and do I like it (which is not necessarily the same thing.)

The writing comes second. If the art is really good, it might be a while before I catch on that the story isn't that great. And even then, I might endure if it's pretty to look at.
>>
>>90124037
man I was the first one to mention them and I wasnt suggesting you change it
>>
>>90124381
nah but I showed my completed pages to girls I know, they though it was well drawn, but too much boobage, they though it was stupid fun. I think I made a stupid choice by trying to introduce my characters like this. These are gonna be the only "big tits" characters for my setting, but yeah, all in the same place may not be the best narrative choice, but well. On future stories, i'll diversify the appearances of each characters, so people might not think: "hey remember that character? The one with big tits?"
So yeah, changes, but i'm keeping these characters the way they are
>>
>>90124254
One of the people going "jeez cool it with the tits man" here, and don't get the wrong idea, there's nothing wrong with a character having huge gag boobs - just, when seemingly every single female character in the comic has breasts the size of her head it goes from "oh, this lady has big breasts" to "oh, this author has a fetish".
>>
>>90124582
I would think feet and tits, but I also think they're trolling so there's that.

"café belle maison", that would be the gramatically correct way to title this cafe. The only coffee shop that put "café" in the end in france are bootleg starbucks. From what I see, you're going for a classic style café-brasserie, so yeah.
Also on french storefronts, we don't have fences, french laws allows to have seatings in front of your bar/coffee shop.
Pic related, it's on rue de la roquette, the best street to get wasted in paris.

Help?
I don't want to ask for critique on /ic/, you know them. And I have a comic in works so I'll ask here. I have a problem with looking at a full picture and just see details alone, Especially when drawing. Advice in general?
>>
>>90134221
>I don't want to ask for critique on /ic/, you know them
I can relate with this.
But is that your pic? It's pretty well drawn, except for some minor details in the arms. Forearms seem a bit too large in some places.
>>
>>90134221
I'll start off with your strengths before I delve into the criticism. You have good line control and polished coloring, and the designs are pretty cute. The hair is especially well done.

The shading is a little weird? Establish light sources. I'd recommend using a lighter blush on the face of the pink girl, and a darker blush on the blue girl if you want it to look natural to her skin tone. Use more contrast on the gems/charms to show that they're glowing, right now it's a little too dark.

To get a bit harsher, the eyes are outright unsettling, especially on the orange girl, and they drag the picture down by a lot. I'll advise you start from the basics on the faces in general, focusing on proportions and placement. Look to other magical girl/cutesy cartoons and anime for examples on how to stylize them.

The posing is kind of stiff, which you can work on with gestural practice. Their breasts look a little weirdly flat. Their feet and hands look too small - you could ostensibly work this into a sort of K-On look, but right now it just seems sloppy. To really nitpick, their forearms shouldn't be thinner where they meet the elbow than any other place on the forearm. It's like a cone, not a banana.

Overall, good potential but the faces absolutely kill it.
>>
>>90134853
Pardon, I should say that I meant the forearms shouldn't be thinner where they meet the elbow IF they're bent, otherwise a curve just above the elbow is natural.

A BLAZE IN THE WESTERN SKY(5fth remake of my demon juice project)

RANDOM METEOR(first take, hope i dont need to remake it with a new style and story one day)

and my TROPE DYKES project im not counting as a real project as i will probably just make it into a 1 or 2 joke pages a month kind of thing, i dont think it will ever have enough pages to be a real webcomic, it will just a way for me to make social commentary in a funny and edgy way with my trope dyke girls. yeah

thats how my webcomics are, what about you fuckers? tell me all about your stuffs, i want to know!

peoples adivce on here was: fix perspective, change font type, change the word balloons from being white squares, fix Feras face in bottom panel, etc, etc

did everything expect fix perspective. characters sizes are accurate and not a trick of the perspective. if they look tiny or giant in panel 1 then they are. nuff said.

I didn't design them but I did take liberties here and there. So some things like the feet and crown placement were inspiered from that. Also based the poses off ones from the show but I made them more stiff than they are, tried not to.
I had a light source on each one but then I decided I wanted them all together and after new shading it got...Incorrect.
And for some reason arms are so much harder than hands for me. I try to proportion them to the body too much and I think that really messes things up.

The eyes issue is actually new to me and im glad you brought it up. I always feel odd making big happy eyes and sizing them to the face with still keeping to 'joy' exaggerated. I never thought it was a big problem though, but now I see it.

I'm trying to spend some time making the relationships between characters a bit more realistic (and how those relationships effect other characters) and I've come across an interesting one.

Its basically Betty and Archie, except Archie had a year long sex fueled relationship with Veronica, ended it due to being unable to commit, then had a mutual drunken hookup with Cheryl 3 weeks prior to starting the relationship with Betty (which everyone has been extremely open and forward about). I didn't read many of the Archie books but in this situation "Betty" has a sister like relationship Cheryl and develops one for Veronica after establishing a relationship with Archie

If you don't want to be compared to him, then look at what he does and try to stop being like that. Ignore the main characters on the far right, they're way off model.

The comic takes place in a small town called "Witchway".
>Marie is a 13 year-old orphan determined to discover what happened to her parents after a Witch became deranged and put a curse on the town. Optimistic and adventurous, seemingly nothing can stop this ordinary girl once she sets her mind on something.

>Morgan is Marie's best friend and a Witch-in-training who wants to make up for what her grandmother did by helping Marie fight off the many dangers around Witchway and wherever magic is needed. Usually a very calm and collected person, she loses her temper over others that abuse their magic and anything involving her older sister Milly.

>Milly is the last living town Witch, and often uses her powers to play harmless tricks on people and make her life much more comfortable. She sees Marie as "the sister she wished she had instead" and always takes care of her in times of need. Very lazy but reliable.

>Athena is a Monk who wants to live peacefully in the woods. Despite this, Marie constantly drags her into dangerous situations that call for her talents. Very friendly despite her stoic appearance.

>Chupacabro is Marie's pet and one of the many monsters they encounter in Witchway. He usually wanders off to suck the blood of any mammals nearby, but especially likes chewing on Morgan's hair.

>Tracy is an 11 year-old Sorceress-in-training and thinks of herself as Marie and Morgan's greatest threat. Despite all the mischief she usually causes, she really just wants to be friends with them. Brash and cocky, she thinks highly of herself.

>Dexter Bower IV is the town's local Alchemist and blacksmith. After discovering a strange kind of magic killed his father, he replaces his right arm with an artifact that can transmute anything to a desired element and goes on a Witch hunt for Milly and Morgan. Usually cheerful and outgoing.

>Debora is a young Irish woman cursed as a Banshee by Morgan and Milly's grandmother. Until they can find a way to break the spell, she's taken a vow of silence for everyone's safety. Gloomy and aloof, she rarely notices or cares for her surroundings.

>Stanley
A horror movie enthusiast that provides (often) inaccurate information about threats the main characters deal with. Good natured but a huge clutz.

>Sister Abby
A small old lady that runs the town's church.

>>
>>90144499
Yeah, she's actually what I had in mind when drawing Marie. I wanted the main character to have really simple details to make her easier and quicker to sketch.

>>90144822
I wanted to keep the story simple starting off. Something like Camp Weedonwantcha where there's a few pages of one-off jokes and the occasional arc thrown in.

Marie is set on finding out what exactly happened to her parents. There were no bodies discovered so she has reason to believe they may be alive. With Morgan and Milly around she's confident that there's some clue left by their grandmother around somewhere.
While searching, many different kinds of magic users start showing up to Witchway and are usually out to kill Milly and Morgan, as Witches are considered "too dangerous" to be left alive.

Beyond the handful of characters I've doodled, a couple of pages I wrote, and the outlined plot, that's all I've done. I work better when I don't try planning a few steps ahead.

So I'm just getting into writing outside of short stories for class, and a common comment my fellow classmates made about my writing is that it was very 'comic-like'. I do enjoy comics and would actually love to be a comic creator but I have absolutely no artistic talent. I think the last time I drew a comic was when I was in 5th grade for a club.

How difficult, and how long would it take, on average, to become a competent comic artist? I'd rather not have to pay loads of money to an artist as I'm poor. I don't believe lettering would be too much of an issue and I can self-edit, but I won't do it if it means spending like 5 more years to git gud.

You can git gud in a year if you religiously dedicate yourself
>>
>>90150357
If you dedicate yourself to the life and work ethic of a mangaka (which you won't) it's doable in even three years or less. But you must be prepared to sacrifice all of your free time to either drawing or reading/studying comics to find a workable style.

I would consider that BETTER. But not... "good."

It's not a full comic or anything. It's just an exercise in writing comic shorts. Pic is the 1-1. I'm thinking of doing a few more.

I utterly failed to meet my goal of a simplified style similar to Toriyama or Tezuka, so I want to try again.

Guys what should i do about this?

a while ago i used to post my characters and a few pages of my comics here using a trip , over time i became better at drawing and coloring but i stoped posting because i want to post my first chapter when i get a website

My first chapter isn't done yet, but someone i know saw my drawings and that got me a job that i don't really like at a local tv station

My boss has this weird and kinda edgy oc, and my job now is to draw 4 panel joke comics

No matter what i do he always likes my job, pic related is a WIP of a poop joke he wanted me to turn into a comic

Let's say here im just using around 30% or 40% of my skills

Today he told me that i should start signing these drawings and he wants to put my name on the credits of other stuff

Let's just say that his tv station and most of his projects are well on a really low level right now

A few days ago he showed me a comic he printed in the past made by whoever used to have my job before me, and oh boy, i don't know who drew that thing but it was worse than anything that has ever been posted here

i feel like i shouldn't put my name in something related to this guy, but on the other side it could be good start he said he will give me part of whatever money he makes with the printed version on top of the money im already getting

Use a pseudonym and claim it's an artistic choice. If it goes south you're safe from the association, if it goes well then link the pseudonym to your work.

the time it takes depends on talent, but the skill depends on work. you can substitute extra work for talent.

that's okay.. people have a different level of translation-explanations they will tolerate in a given work, but usually at least the author's name is fine. It can be part of the trivia your fans pass around to explain how the pun works
>>
>>90152547
let's not get into that again
that anon is just an anime-hating fuckhole, but he doesn't have to post his work to support his dumbass opinions
>>
>>90152547
I could post something, I am better than him for sure, but my drawing skill is irrelevant to prove that his art isn't good. That reality wouldn't change even if I were worse than him.

>>90152882
Also I don't really hate anime. Some styles of anime can be appealing, this guy's style in particular, however, is awful.
In truth, the fact that this guy is drawing anime actually masks how bad he is. Just look at the hands of the last picture and you can realize how wonky his fundamentals are. The face looks "good" because he learned how to draw the specific symbols required for that style, and that's it. Then again, now that I am looking at it one more time, this guy is most likely tracing every picture, because his style really changes randomly every month.

By the way, go fuck yourself, Anon.
>>
>>90153212
you're right about the hands, but dead wrong about the face. though it is clear that at one point that was true, leading to the rough patch that summer when he started actually trying to draw them on properly and suddenly had a downswing in quality.
then you start getting all paranoid because you're a hateful, spiteful person and I just feel sorry for you and how miserable you must be all the time.

As far as I can figure, this is the process:

Figure out what tribal identity you're trying to appeal to - it can be anything, but ideally, something that's dear to the heart of people with internet presence and disposable income. If they already have an established enemy tribe that you can use as Bad Guys, that's a plus.
Tell them you're one of them, or at least on their side.
Tell them that they're being wrongfully persecuted and oppressed by the Bad Guys.
Tell them how they're amazing and virtuous and special and valuable for fighting the good fight against the Bad Guys.
Tell them that your shit scribbles are a way of fighting the Bad Guys, that you need help, and that they'll hurt the Bad Guys by supporting you.

they're noodly and adorable. though just a tip: torsos that small are going to limit your posing ability at some point. for example if you want hands on hips, and the elbows are already at hip level, it's gonna look almost Arms Akimbo from Freakazoid.
You can make it work, but it's just a little more of a challenge if you go full Shane

It looks far too stiff. You've got the fingers turned directly to the viewer but the fag is pointed at an awkward angle.

There's no background either. I understand you want the focus to remain on the characters, but it looks bland without anything to break the solid white.
What you're going for is nice; a mix if black and gray with solid lines. It would help greatly of you threw in a light gray, slightly blurred background set to make things look nicer.

If you have free time, look up on YouTube "How to Draw the Marvel Way". It's a bit outdated but gives solid advice on black and white shading, dynamic poses, and dimensions that help the characters pop out a bit more.

I'll be following your stuff though. Keep up the good work and don't be afraid to take some risk with drawing.
