Well, she IS a half-human. And there is still a house full of refugees to "save". I wouldn't put it past Val (and I know Val wants to keep mysticism/magic out of this comic) but at the same time I think people like to assume that lore will always end up relevant to the plot when it is really just lore/a red herring (See >>90116113, the world map, Habzig and the fetish side story).

Fair enough. I kicked in when they first got their patreon page, and I've kept it going ever since (through I reduced my pledge). I'm normally skeptical of per month rather than per content payment models, but RLM puts out so much stuff that I don't mind at all.

There are a lot of cool webcomics and funny people I enjoy but I dont feel an urge to pay them for it unless they are doing something weird enough to be worth preserving. The TF stuff is beyond me, but OOP is memorable if nothing else. It also helps that Val was apprehensive about starting one immediately; if your artistic work exists primarily as a way to escape your 9-5 or cultivate a personality, that is a bad foundation to start a start a career on.

Also, another thread, another question for Val: you are pretty great at taking criticism, but that is the exception, not the rule for most artists I meet. Any advice on giving criticism without coming off in a bad way? In professional environments I was always told the "compliment-criticism-compliment" but I cant always pull that off naturally in conversation.

So how long until Plague of Gripes finds this comic and starts harassing Val with overly suggestive and sexy yinglets?
>>
>>90124448
>Val was apprehensive about starting one
Seriously! It took over a year of constant prodding by readers and other artists whose work I enjoy to get it through my head that Patreon might be a good idea. In the end, it was the realization that I'm doing it for free anyway, so why not get a little extra income in the process, thereby allowing myself to spend less time doing "real" work and more time drawing?

I didn't expect it to actually reach "real"-job levels of work per hour, good god. At least until I had a few months worth of vote sketches to tempt people with!

>>90124448
>you are pretty great at taking criticism
Thanks! It helps to view every criticism as a chance to improve, and separate your personal value from your work. It also helps to go to an art school where they drill it into your head that THE PAIN OF CRITICISM IS GOOD, TAKE IT AND LOVE IT, ART-WORMS but yeah, it's not something that comes to just about anyone naturally, I think.

For giving others criticism, I've found it's useful to pose it less as "this is wrong/substandard/etc" and more like "this piece could really benefit from [x]!" It's not possible in every situation, but phrasing it positively and constructively goes a long way.

>>90120231
Aw man, thanks! It takes a lot to get someone to take the Patreon Plunge, so that means a lot.

>>90121497
I am seriously hoping for this. I'll be selecting things to sketch/draw from a handful of the highest-voted ideas instead of the highest-voted one every time, so that I can ensure more than just the yinglets get some attention.

(There will still undoubtedly be a lot of yinglets)

Congrats again on the Patreon. Good to see humble, eager-to-learn artists get rewarded for their dedication.

He never specifically said TF. If you count xenophilia/monster girls as "fetish" material then yes, hell yes this comic has that in spades. I would say it easily overshadows the TF themes and you can see it for yourself when you look at the fanart: people are way more interested in the species themselves than they are in transitioning.

Not that I would give the comic a hard time for it. Basically everything that got popular on /co/ had a sexy/cute angle to it, with added weirdness because its the internet--that's just what people like.

If you zoom out to all media, generally romance and/or sex appeal are expected out of everything. Star wars had it, 1984 had it, uncharted had it. It shouldn't be shameful to have some damn waifus in your movie/story/game. It's universal, dammit!

Probably pretty low

Bacteria, viruses and shit take time to adapt to stuff. For instance, when plants first appeared they wouldn't rot cause bacteria didn't know what to do with them. That's where most of our coal comes from, that period of time.

Seeing as Greater Yinglets are a relatively recent species, prone to extreme mutation, it's likely there is very little in the way of small nasties that can actually infect them.

TL;DR - You can't clear Yinglets out with smallpox infested blankets
>>
I want a yinglet roommate

>That's where most of our coal comes from, that period of time.
Fuuuck, I thought coal would regenerate at a mostly constant rate, even if slow as fuck
Why do hippies have to simplify things when the full truth makes way more sense?
>>
>>90158972
even if it did work that way, there'd be waaaay less new coal being made due to deforestation in general and how little of the wood we use ends up underground once we're done with it
>>
>>90158889
does that mean any predator or scavenger that eats a yinglet would get sick because it doesn't have the gut microbiology to digest them?
>>
>>90158972
It's like, a fair bit of coal. That age lasted like a million years or something so trees had a pretty good time

Note I am pulling all this from memory so there may be some knowledge inaccuracies here.

>>90159098
You might get indigestion, but the noxious stuff Yinglets tend to live, eat and bathe in is probably a bigger risk
>>
>>90158889
Besides that stuff their natural habitat is also "poisonous shit-swamp", full of toxic plants they use for soap and food.
>>
>>90159027
Were it constant, there'd be solace in that the supply would regenerate (after a long ass time) if we stopped; but seeing as a good chunk of it comes from a one-in-a-planet's-lifetime incident, it really puts that into perspective

The human race is collectively pretty lucky that we got what we did when we did. There will probably never be an easier or more plentiful source of energy for steam engines to a pre-industrial society, and developments on that front eventually led to modern combustion engines, electricity and mining technologies.

The reserves probably will last a lot longer than people think now that commercial coal power is getting its shit kicked in by NG.

There isn't really a point since by the time the hundreds of millions of years pass we'll hopefully have something better than coal to power our interstellar space ships.

But also there's a metric shitton of coal still in the ground, and as another guy said with improvements in extraction techniques methane mining has become cheaper and easier than coal mining. Expect methane to be the fossil fuel of the 21st century.
>>
>>90160069
>commercial coal power is getting its shit kicked in by NG
this. making coal "competitive" with gas would require subsidizing it to the tune of literally trillions of dollars. I just wish West Virginia had a fucking face so i could see the look on it when it finally sinks in that coal stands less chance of "coming back" than does the 8-track tape.

I had a really nice post typed out about how cows don't produce enough to be meaningful when compared to the amount we consume to generate electricity but then I closed the tab like a fucking idiot.

But pretty much a cow, each year, will produce a third of the methane needed to power an American house for a day. It's not really an economical way to get methane.

Cerebus the Aardvark is a comic. THE comic, in some's opinions (Alan Moore called it the Hydrogen of comics periodic table). It's 300 issues, independently published, and was all written/drawn by the same guy. His surname's Sim and I made an assumption.

I've been putting off reading it myself, but from what I understand it's the same sort of cynical neurotic social-satire that made Howard the Duck a hit. Also Dave Sim goes crazy towards the end and just starts printing essays.

Corn based biofuels are fucking terrible. They're what we refer to as 1st gen biofuels. Sugar based, wildly inefficient, wildly expensive.

2nd gen biofuels come from cellulose, which we do actually have the technology for. Right now corn has massive biofuel subsidies so nobody is actually making them.

3rd and 4th gen (depending on who you ask) biofuels is where it's at. These are algaes that directly produce hydrocarbons that can be used as fuel. Just scrape the oil off the top of the vat and burn it. We've had this for the better part of a decade, we just aren't investing in it because of existing subsidies.

Well, the technology for cellulose-based fuels exist, and the fuels are comparatively low in oxygen compared to bioethanol from corn, but the reality is that these developments are hindered by the fact that they require expensive catalysis/pyrolysis/extraction procedures to break up the polymers and reduce oxygen content, which still is too high to compete with petroleum-based fuels from a cracker.

I believe bodiesel can be mixed with traditional diesel though, in a 30/70 split and you get viable fuel too.

Try gamma ray bursts. They have the potential to instantly end all life on earth, with zero sign of warning (as the radiation travels just as fast as the EM indication of the supernova that caused it). Every time a big enough star collapses, imagine a planetary game of Russian Roulette (granted the metaphorical gun has so many chambers that it's not exactly destined to happen like asteroid collisions)

Well, a few things come to mind.

The British conquering of India was like an enormous and technologically superior army willing to throw any amount of soldiers at taking out small isolated Enclaves regardless of terrain and conditions. There was even a king who's palace was guarded only by his warrior wives that killed so many soldiers the British opted to just blow it up with them all inside instead of trying to take it.

There was the time a Spanish king demanded an armada be built immediately and refused to listen when they told him they couldn't and that they needed time to prepare the lumber (fresh AKA green wood is still dying and full of water, it warps and bends as it dies and dries) so the ships all sank when launched before they were even out of sight of the harbor.

There was a few American Indian tribes who's concept of war was more like having an axe in one hand and a stick with paint on it in the other, and riding around trying to paint the other tribe without getting chopped (makes sense, an easy way to resolve territorial disputes without weakening both tribes with allwarriors dying so a third group doesn't try to drive both out; those brave enough to paint a lot of others got feathers indicating being brave or skilled enough, one of the possible origins of the war feathers in headdresses).
Then those guys met American cavalrymen and far more aggressive Indians already pushed west by said cavalry...

>20,000 emus were confronted by 200 Yinglet soldiers and two Lewis Guns
>The attack was a disaster: The troops were issued ear protection, which they promptly ate, and were thus startled when firing commenced

>The gun operators, also Yinglets, confused their scattering comrades for smaller "sopretty" emus and maintained a withering barrage on their own ranks

>By the end of the day, 5000 rounds of ammunition had been expended, the Lewis Guns rendered inoperable by barrel erosion, and over 50 troops had been killed

>The officer on the scene, and only human, was found under a nearby tree, drinking sterno from the troop cooking stove

>One emu was found dead at the scene, having been bitten by a venomous snake at some point prior and subsequently perished before the attack commenced

From what I understand most wars in antiquity shied away from actual killing whenever possible.

The (somewhat) recent development of PTSD as a recognized symptom of war has been suggested to come about because we can't just chase most of the enemy forces away now that both sides are equipped with modern combustion arms.

Not downplaying the horribleness of "old war" at all, but you have to admit that it would be much more difficult to chase down retreating enemies and execute them than nowadays with split-second reactions and what not.

War without killing is how you deal when both sides have low populations, tribes or clans, and see yourself as a unified race or culture but different factions within it. The fact that it appears and reappears so much in history makes it far more likely Walking Dead factions would resolve issues with sports like wrestling than massacring each other.

If you think about it, a civil war is an unnatural state.

>country makes claim/demand ("I want your oil or territory or whatever")
>both countries pick ~15 or whatever people to represent them.
>They draw the team game out of a hat
>The defending nation gets 1 (one) retry

This way you have to try to build a diverse team for any situation and neither country has an unfair advantage because of a local popular sport
>>
>>90184705

>country A has population of 400 million
>country B has population of 60 million

A can field a far more diverse team of trained athletes coked up on steroids than B could hope to

Besides, lets be honest here, replace war with sports and black countries really will conquer the world

Numbers aren't the end all be all of war. Tactics, experience, equipment quality, money/resources, knowledge/familiarity of terrain, etc all factor into it too.
>>

>A can field a far more diverse team of trained athletes coked up on steroids than B could hope to
The country with superior money, population and capability to train their people would probably win in a war as well

It's not supposed to be an absolute perfect playing field. It's a replacement for war.

Population count still helps
Instead of better weaponry, better training

>black countries really will conquer the world
Only in some sports. Team sports often pretty diverse.

There were some earlier pics that showed some males were more aggressive/dominate than others and the more submissive/feminine males will use that to get taken care of/doted on by the the other type of males. I wouldn't think so, sense heterosexual sex is done for the purpose of procreation. Presumably in the missionary position too, those disgusting scavs. It's probably the traits that males can emulate that they come to care about.
>>
>>90200025
According to Val in the comic comment's section , traditionalist yinglets don't give a fuck about them, but more cosmopolitan/ living near human towns setlements slowly made the connection big boobs= success in life, and some matriarcs (with Vizlet as the main example) are starting to encourage it via breeding.

>>
>>90208401
This pretty much. MGTOW sentiments often stem from bitterness at rejection or fear of rejection not fear/misunderstanding of the opposite sex.

Poak clearly wanted it regardless of the matriarchs intentions, and the "sopretty" meme + male adornment shows that pretty much every one of em desires females.

Ironically, as much as people accuse val of gay propaganda with their species, the culture sure does treat gay relationships as a second place prize for those too weak to find a mate.

So then... Baxxids. These big 'nid-looking guys. What are they even doing in the city? Their food source is out on the plains, supposedly, and they don't like violent work, so how are the majority keeping themselves fed?

There are only so many job opportunities for thinking-types who can't write, after all. They could try pulling carts and such, but as probable obligate carnivores they'd lose to those giant pillbugs in terms of cost-efficiency.

...Except for the fact that they can guide themselves. Taxicarts, maybe? That would play to their memorization talents. Although, there is limited work to be had there as well.

The other work I can think of is mining. Put metal caps on those leg-claws and turn them into picks.

Hm... Maybe herding, too. Of whatever large beasts it is that they eat. Assuming that said beasts don't instinctively flee at the sight of their natural predator.

They don't look like meat-eaters to me. Their teeth are unsuited for it, I'd say they probably work something tough that doesn't require biting into. Then again we don't know that they can't eat human food.

As for employment, if you figure Val Salia is like renaissance Italy then every house and trading consortium will need one to four accountants and record-keepers simply for privacy reasons.
>>
>>90218600
well, they are 4% and this tradepost of a town is like couple hundreds maybe a thousand or two pop. worth. that makes a couple of dozens of them. Most of whom are probably traders (this is a trading hub, remember?), representing the entire tribes and the rest are their entourage. Only a couple are on their own relying on the job opportunities from outside.

But I admit that the human-nonhuman relationships in this comic is too cosy. even with all wars and aforementioned intolerance in the rest of the world in the background and this town being supposedly the most open-minded in the world, its just a furry comic made for a sole purpose of making characters of different species engage in various interactions. mostly speak to each other or occasionally falling sleep on top of each other.

too little evil in this story. too few global problems. they basically live a happy life while tolerating the shit out of each other when in a more realistic setting there would be a Witcher level of hate, repression, segregation and outright genocide in proportions of how many differences the races in question have (so yeah, humans + baxxids = Ender's Game/Starship Troopers).

And I'm not complaining - I just take it another law of this world. From this standpoint baxxids are sufficiently viable.

I don't think Val Salia is a completely unique snowflake of a population center. Remember that the wars are all primarily up north between warlords, and the indication that Val Salis is the #1 education and research hub comes from their own propaganda. Not to mention its mentioned that there's centers of learning elsewhere where VS discoveries are being debated.
>>
>>90219775
>the indication that Val Salis is the #1 education and research hub
I said it was a trading hub and that it was open-minded (i.e. inclusive to other races). Nor did I say it was unique. Anyway, how is it relevant?
>>
>>90219886
You said its supposedly the most open-minded in the world. But that may only be because that's their tourism line, not objective fact.

Its also another parallel to Italy. While the Crusades were going on and Germans were DEUS VULTing into the Middle East to kill all Kebab and a bit of Jew, Italy had trade houses run by Muslims and representatives of their trade partners in the court. By and large Italy mostly went "have fun faggots, take some of our poorfags on your way if you want" while reaping the benefits of the trade imbalances it caused at the time.

Traders tend to be metropolitan and inclusive. Look at the occidentals in Japan, regardless of the will of god and emperor the ways of every foreign nation survived in the merchants as long as trade occurred. That's why you had guys in coastal cities walking around with top hats and suits when the rest of the country was enforcing a return to robes.
>>
>>90219705

Heck even per-crusades middle east was pretty tolerant. That whole region of the world was basically one gigantic trade hub between Europe, Asia, and Africa and as a result most of the cultures had a sort of 'Islam best but we tolerate infidels because the bring in goods and coin' type of attitude.
If I recall correctly there was even a case of a sultan getting in an argument with the religious leaders because taxes were higher for non-Muslims and their conversion success were cutting into his bottom line.
>>

I think you're underestimating the population significantly. Even back in the Bronze Age, a few thousand citizens is the bare minimum number to be called a city.

Thankfully, though, we have a more direct way of estimating Val Salia's overall population. There are 6 females in the Yinglet Enclave meaning a total of 48 Yinglets... Erm, probably a lot more than that since Vizlet mentioned they were 'understaffed', so to speak. But still, even at four times that number, the overall population only comes out to a couple hundred.....

Okay, I concede the point.

In that case, what do these guys trade in? Are they working entirely off of capital and holdings run by humans, or do they have some sort of valuable export from their tribes they can sell?

The ~48 figure you are citing includes patriarchs and specialists. For all we know, a vagrant shitter population an order of magnitude larger lives around the city.

...or at least, that's what I thought until I re-read this page. Apparently the plebs pay taxes for "guidance and protection"? Maybe Val just screwed up and the enclave houses several hundred?
>>
>>90224266
>>90224403
I'm going by the "1/8th Female" rule and assuming that all females are associated with an enclave, so counting the females and multiplying by eight *should* give an approximate count of how many Yinglets live in any given area.

I also don't thing there are less than a couple hundred Yinglets running around, so it seems the skew is even more massive than usual in Val Salia.

This might be explained by the majority of the V.S. Yinglet population being immigrants, as no tribe wants to see their precious females emigrating.

>The Yinglet Females' fertility cycle lasts approximately two weeks, in wish the seed of all the males she has collected during her cycle mingles together within her womb, resulting in a mix of all the males' "Genes".
>At the end of the cycle, she will pass a clutch of 4-8 eggs, which will be cared for and raised by the enclave as a while, rather than by the parents, as is our custom.

So how surprised will Kassen be when he pops out eggs in a couple weeks? Males are only needed for fertilization, not for egg production.

True.

Still, even if she does not come around to wanting to having "relations" with other males she's going to have to deal with the egg laying anyways. Seems to me if you have to deal with the annoying side effects of the body no matter what you may as well have some fun with it.

The former. They mostly do simple services in exchange for money (oftentimes clear charity cases) such as guard duty, deliveries and messages.

The closest thing to exports they have are toxic swamp alchemical ingredients and whatever beach crapshoot they can find.
>>
>>90223075
>In that case, what do these guys trade in? Are they working entirely off of capital and holdings run by humans, or do they have some sort of valuable export from their tribes they can sell?

Probably? They live underground and dig, so they bound to find some shit from time to time. They are apparently good killers, if needed be and they have good protection and superior intellect so they can hunt dangerous things for hides, carapaces, tasks, meat (even dragon jerky or dry unicorn dick can fetch a hefty prize on the market if you know who your clients are). Then again you don't need to produce all of your merchendize yourself to be good at trade. They can buy cheap from other species something and sell to another. And the best part you don't need to posses opposable fingers for that - only be good at math and logistics, which incidentally baxxids are.

Again, the setting of this comic has like overall xenophoby -15, inter-species cooperation motivation +5. So there are things happening here that would normally^W logically not be happening, like baxxids finding much more use and recognition among humans than they would, in our world in medieval (ar any other) times. Remember how Kass gave Lopin two times more money than asked for useless piece of junk, just because why not? Apply this to human/baxxid relationships in general - they would buy things off baxxids that they would normally don't at higher prices, just because baxxids have better stats. Its Master of Orion game logic in action.

Not saying it's bad. just stating how it is. I love MoO.
>>
>>90223075
They're intelligent enough to be useful and once they have capital they'd be able to invest and create their own businesses.

Not to mention they're rare enough to be a novelty. It's a hook, draws in travellers or people who just don't get out much. It's a talking point.

Lastly, they're like a chitinous death-serpent with sword-arms. Unlikely someone is going to start a brawl or attempt to steal from you when Edward Swordhands is standing there hissing out some terrifying-sounding Baxxid poetry

So you have novelty, intelligence and intimidation. Three reasons to hire Bob the Baxxid over Harry the Human. Yinglets need not apply.

Which brings us back to the question at hand. Since it would be relatively easy for a Baxxid to attain employment, they can acquire capital and create their own business interests. It's likely they'd be successful, given the reasons stated above.

Lets talk about where the morphing catalysts came from.

My guess is this world is an arena in a game some gods, who put new races in like pieces on the board. Those who start later on can put a specific amount of tokens allowing them transform any other creature into a member of their race.

Think of Silmarillion and how every god in that pantheon got to create their own race and how these gods are virtually absent at the point when LotR takes place, yet still manage project some will onto the world.
>>
>>90248433

>Think of Silmarillion and how every god in that pantheon got to create their own race

If by "every god" you mean, "just Aule, actually, and only because he got so impatient waiting for the firstborn that he decided to just try and make them himself, after which Illuvitar thought they were too cute to wipe out," then sure.

I don't have any comment on the meat of your comment, I'm just an enormous Tolkien fag with a compulsive need to correct people. Sorry.
>>
>>90248433
I may not be a mind reader, but I know that val wants this webcomic to mix the tropes of fantasy (low-tech, vaguely earth setting; non-human intelligent races; a light-hearted narrative about a personal quest) with the attitudes of sci fi (darker themes; everything must be explained to be semi-plausible; exposition can be done for expositions sake).

The confirmed presence of malevolent/benevolent/apathetic gods meddling in mortal affairs kinda breaks that rule on everything being semi-plausible. It seems like something out of the usual genre fantasy, and kinda betrays the point of the comic in the first place. I highly doubt val will ever confirm or deny the existence of any supernatural elements, lest he start down the slippery slope of using actual "I dont gotta explain shit" magicks.

Granted, morrowind was a major influence and it has several meddlesome gods, so I may be wrong.
>>
>>90248607
Ok, not every, but some. Yavanna also was responsible for ents and Melkar - for all the nasty shit (directly or by curruption).

But what I mean it was not like Greek pantheon in which all gods were concerned with one single race.
>>
>>90248975
yet still the morphing catalysts are already not just a mystery, but a puzzle. this Narklet patriarch seems to know about them. But I doubt it is a part of yinglet technology. And it's not like they are natural objects - they don't randomly mutate the target, they seem to be coded to produce not only exact species but also a species of a specific sex. Ran should be advocating for intelligent design at this point...

>The confirmed presence of malevolent/benevolent/apathetic gods meddling in mortal affairs kinda breaks that rule on everything being semi-plausible.
That depends on your definition of "plausible". If you mean "works under real-world known physics", then the entire premise of transformation is completely implausible, but if you mean "self-consistent with minimal handwaving" then the existence of higher beings works just fine. (Whether those beings are 'gods' or sufficiently-advanced aliens; by definition those two are indistinguishable.)
