Gah! See what I mean. No wonder Grant Morrison wanted to kill Rogue in his early version of New X-Men. Goth Rogue is a fetish toy and Anna Paquin Rogue was somehow even worse.

I enjoyed it even though I don't read any X-Men comics. Wish it got more seasons.

Remember liking Nightcrawler and Toad.
>>
>>90053948
Much better than you'd think. The forced high school stuff was a bit obnoxious at times, but it didn't really hold the show back.
Only the first and maybe the second season were a bit weaker, but the show improved throughout and did some pretty good stuff.
>>
>>90054279
Ultimate X-Men was a way better execution of this type of approach to the X-Men.
>Homophobic Nightcrawler
>Gay Colossus is ex-Russian Mafia
>Cyclops and Toad become an awesome duo
>Jean Grey goes around reading minds and doesn't give a shit about rules
>Xavier named his cat after Mystique because they used to fuck
>Emma Frost's Massachusetts School is way better
>Beast died early on, if anyone is into that
>Dazzler is a punk rock musician and dates Angel
>Dazzler and Angel are best couple
>Xavier might have had a three way with Mystique and Emma Frost
>Polaris, Havok, and Cannonball were great
>Cypher is just a super smart human attending Emma's School
>Wolverine is really a beta cuck
>Kitty Pryde dated Peter Parker
>Rogue and Gambit were very quickly tossed out of the story since they are shit
>Blob trolls Beast over the internet into thinking Blob is a girl and wants to date
>Storm dated Beast
>Storm dated Wolverine
>Storm is a bitch from some American Suburb
>Cyclops learns to become an assertive leader without alienating his friends or killing Xavier
>>
I liked it a lot

The first second was kind of weak but it improved a lot midway through the second one.

And Avalanche will never look that good again. I got really pissed when he tried to join the X-Men and be a good guy and all he received was bullying and zero trust.

Yeah it was pretty good. I liked that the Jean/Scott/Logan love-triangle didn't exist, you know, what with Jean being a teenager.

It also gave us X-23. I prefer the original over the one in the comics.
>>
>>90055113
I may hate X-Men Evolution, but Wolverine and the X-Men was cancer. Despite my bitching about poor character design and Goth Rogue being beyond retarded, the creators of X-Men Evolution seemed like they were putting effort into their product.

Wolverine and the X-Men looked like lazy flash animation with uninspired production design, lame costumes, and an abysmally atrocious narrative.

It did nothing right.

>>
>>90054625
It was. Ultimate X-Men was definitely a product of its times and its times involved "writers wanting to have a naked George W. Bush stand-in lick the boots of Magneto on the white house lawn."

There were cool ideas, but it was trying exponentially too hard to be darker and edgier.

Thought the high school stuff was alright. Once the mutants were revealed to the public and it got into actual X-Men stuff I felt the show got significantly better
>>
Season 2 and onwards were all pretty solid. Also, as awful as highschool stuff almost always is, it was nice to see the Xmen back in their original wheelhouse.

Spike was total shit though.

Also I'm sad they never got to do season 5 with Mister Sinister as the main antagonist. Shit would have been baller.
>>
At first, I was mad it wasn't more of the same, but I was willing to give it a shot. Over time, I've come to appreciate the common sense in breaking away from canon and just doing its own thing.

The first season is kind of janky and it spends too much time messing about but it gets really good. It's also a case of "let's make everyone teenagers!" that works well because it fits with the theme and also because they held back some characters like Storm and Wolverine to stay as adults.

The "messing about" part is especially annoying as it peters out instead of actually ending.
>>

>>90058331
I'm also 29. Definitely wasn't that old when Evo first aired so I'll happily cop to finding Rogue and Kitty hot as fuck.

Also don't buy into that bullshit, we're biologically geared to find women around the ages of 15-18 attractive. You can admit to finding them hot on an anonymous image board. Obviously don't actually try anything (and who'd want to, personality and experience wise teens are fucking awful) but it is perfectly natural for men to find a 16 or 17 year old girl attractive.

It's funny to think of where he ends up, since his first episode has him trying to straight up kill Kitty, her parents, and Jean because Kitty wouldn't help him cheat on a test.

The first season was kind of weird.
>>
>>90059771
I always saw that as just being another sign of his anger problems rather than him being straight up murderous. Like if he'd actually done it he would've gone "oh fuck what did I just do"
>>
I'd love a thematic reboot of this show, with the whole gradually recruiting students angle and use it for a kind og Brave and the Bold or JLU showcase to have many more minor X-Men and mutant villains get a chance to shine.

Nope, he kept trying to convert Colossus into being a heterosexual in almost every talk the two characters had. Eventually Nightcrawler fucks off to be king of the Morlocks and is killed by Apocalypse/Sinister only to have a last minute Jean/Phoenix erase those events.

Doesn't help anyway because he drowns in Ultimatum.

Ultimate X-Men started out good, but quickly turned to shit. Robert Kirkman was poison for that comic. Millar, Bendis, and Brian K. Vaughan are the only worthwhile writers on Ultimate X-Men.

My advice is to not buy superhero comics from Marvel. The current state of the X-Men is awful.
>Cyclops is dead and everyone calls him Hitler
>Beast is erratic
>Emma Frost is now a villain
>Wolverine is dead
>Cyclops murdered Xavier when he became the Dark Phoenix
>Xavier's brain was put inside Red Skull, who now has Xavier's powers
>Rogue is an Avenger and in no X-Men comics
>There are teenage versions of Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Angel, and Iceman in the present
>Teenage Jean Grey turned Teenage Iceman gay
>Teenage Jean Grey manipulated Angel's mind to make him agree with her
>Teenage Jean Grey invades people's minds all the time and BOTH Kitty Pryde and Emma Frost have told her to check that shit
>Magik is Colossus Demon Lord sister
>The X-Men now have a mansion in Magik's Hell Dimension
>X-23 is the current Wolverine
>Storm backstabbed Beast when he tried to stop a race war between the X-Men and Inhumans
>Multiple Man is dead

My recommendation is to find a favorite comic writer and follow them from company to company. 90% of my comic collection is independent creator owned comics from Image, Avatar Press, Dark Horse, and the now defunct Vertigo and Wildstorm (currently owned by DC).

My favorite Comic writers are Warren Ellis, Grant Morrison, and Brian K. Vaughan. I regularly branch out and read anything that looks good, even from writers I don't know anything about.

It also winds up working out because both of them have powers that keep them from truly getting close to people, though of course Rogue's more extreme than Scott in that regard.

As far as pairings invented for animated adaptations, Scott/Rogue is almost as good as John Stewart/Shayera. They had genuine chemistry.

Bendis is the worst. Austen's X-Men run can be enjoyed ironically.

Technically, Jim Lee and the others working on the X-Men books during the 1990s made the X-Men the best selling comic book.

Mutants are also typically massively hypocritical and full of contradictions.

It also makes sense for them to have ideological differences. More realistic and it's less boring than if they agreed on everything.

Also homophobia comes in every flavor. From innocently insensitive comments, to passive-aggressive "I don't support your *living arrangement* with your *friend*" to full blown murder. The X-men would probably tolerates an homophobe among them if he doesn't go too far and they feel he'd have nowhere to go.

I have mixed feelings about this show. And for my money there still hasn't been a great X-Men cartoon. They all seem to range between terrible and sorta decent. They're all pretty watchable though.

I also don't really get the sex appeal of goth Rogue. But I don't really get the sex appeal of goth girls in general.

>But I don't really get the sex appeal of goth girls in general.
Shit taste mate. But it's taste so i will let it pass

The 90s X-Men was the best of them IMO. It adapted the great stories from the comics. I would have loved to see what they would have done with The Brood though

They did do the Brood.

X-Men #1 is best-selling comicbook of all time and wholly due to Claremont's run right before.

Dazzler sounds like a combo of Lila Cheney and Callisto.
>>
>>90066445
He wwas amazingly late 90s/early 2000s. He's pretty much a pointless character who never truly develops connections with others beyond learning to be less of a rebellious hothead.

He was just really thinly characterised.

And he was written off the show, so that just says a lot.
>>
>>90066445
>>90066607
Basically this. Rebellious token black teen who skateboards and doesn't care for authority.

Points for making a new black mutant but even though there weren't many at the time, there still were more fleshed out existing ones they could have used.
>>
So I was thinking of marathoning this, is it worth a watch? Does it end with a cliffhanger like it was canceled or does it seem like a finished narrative?
>>
>>90066756
I did that last week and I regret nothing.

Go for it
>>
>>90065765
An anon corrected me in an earlier post. The X-Men TAS 90s cartoon is why X-Men were popular. While the show used many stories from Claremont's run, they were completely rewritten and the events play out completely different.

Ergo, Claremont is responsible for jack shit, and Marvel pays him to NOT write comics.
>>
>>90065765
It was the art, Chris. Comics are a visual medium.

Morrison and Quitely made Emma Frost the A-List X-Man she is today.
>>
>>90066756
It's fun for marathoning. And honestly, there isn't exactly a cliffhanger; they wrote it so that it could tie things up and explain what they wanted in the coming seasons even if it didn't happen.

Yeah, Spyke was annoying, but he actually became a better character after leaving the main cast. He joined the Morlocks and popped up again as a vigilante defending mutants.
>>
>>90066756
>Does it end with a cliffhanger like it was canceled or does it seem like a finished narrative?
They had a feeling it wasn't going to get renewed, so the last season's finale was done in a way that lets it serve as a series finale. There's some stuff that isn't quite resolved, but it doesn't quite end with "oh fuck what happens next?"

It's a pretty satisfying ending, all things considered.
>>
So, thought exercise. You're developing the show and need to pick the characters. Let's make the teams slightly larger for variety.

Aside from Prof. X you need to choose 3 adult mutants to be professors, and 6-8 kids to be the main fighting force.

And you gotta pick 6-8 kids for the Brotherhood too. How do you mix it up to have an interesting cast that still keeps a few favourites around?
>>
>>90058975
It's also important to note that with Evo, Marvel actually gave the showrunners a choice: they could either have a show based on the then-in-production X-Men movie, or do their own thing. They didn't get a choice with WATX.
>>
>>90068103
I completely forgot this premiered the same year as the first movie
>>
>>90068137
You can tell that Wolverine was still in his post-exposure-fatigue phase in EVO. If this had been in production long enough after the movie I bet Logan would be front and centre again give how well received Jackman's portrayal was.
>>
>>90068586
Yeah, Wolverine hadn't quite reached that level yet, but he was definitely well into his "getting shoved front and center in everything" phase from the early 90's. It was refreshing that the show made him a secondary character.
>>
Man this show sucked balls but I jacked it to Kitty and Rogue so many times. Their designs were spot on.

I'd love to see them do a show centered around the new mutants that's kind of a combination of the original new mutants run and the one around house of m that was pretty good.

Professors:
Scott- teaches them how to use their powers in the field.
Beast- Teaches them ways to use their powers other than fighting.
Storm- Teaches them to be okay with themselves and their powers.

Students
Cannonball
Rahne
Elixir
Magik
Cypher
Danielle
Sunspot
X-23 (the team doesn't really trust her maybe she used to be a hellion)

Instead of Brotherhood I'd say have emma's hellions be the rivals.
Hellion
Magma
Boom Boom
Dust
Polaris would be interesting
Rockslide

I'd like to see it as a show where the xmen are around taking on the big bads but that's more of a catalyst as to what the kids deal with. Like say the brotherhood is attacking new York and the team goes to take them on. The kids stay back at the school but while the xmen are focused on the Brotherhood juggernaut attacks the school.

I'd like to see wolverine roaming around like he did in evolution.

Emma's school would be the rivals and it would be a mix of school rivalries and actual fighting. like both schools pulling pranks on each other or both schools competing to be heroes or to recruit a new student.

I'd have it starto off innocent enough maybe a bit lighthearted but around mid season house of m happens (or something similar ) and mutants start losing their powers. This forces the xavier school and emma's school to combine to better protect the kids forcing the students to put past their rivalries.

maybe even as the show goes on have cyclops and wolverine create their own separate schools

I kind of liked that this version didn't talk (at least not until the finale). It really sells his whole "I am far beyond you" vibe when he just throws people aside without stopping to explain anything.
>>
>>90070565
Oh this is pretty cool, I like the list. Also like the idea of framing it as school vs school instead of Xavier's chosen vs the dropkicks.

As for me, I think in a setting closer to the original EVO I'd have it as such:

>Professors: Xavier, Beast, Storm, Forge

>Students: Bishop, Psylocke, Nightcrawler, Petra, Sunspot, Colossus, Shadowcat, Armor

Jean, Scott, Bobby and Warren are alumni who show up occasionally, having only finished up last year as the "First Graduating Class". Beast is too, so he's the rookie teacher.

>Brotherhood Leaders: Magneto, Astra, Mystique

>Brotherhood: Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Rogue, Tempest (Angel Salvadore), Bandit (contact electroshocks), Toad, Mastermind (Martinique), Blob

I hate to bust your bubble Claremont, but the real reason X-Men #1 is the highest selling comic is because of the 1990s speculation mentality. The quality of the comic was unimportant.

People bought issues of X-Men #1 because they figured it was an good investment as it would rise in value over the decades and ending up being work thousands of dollars.

Marvel flooded the market with the too many copies of the comic, and thus losing all speculative investment potential.

The reason why comics such as Action Comics #1 and Amazing Fantasy #15 are worth thousands of dollars is because those comics had a limited print run, and acted as the cornerstone of modern Superhero comics.
