Rose knew that sometimes you have to lie to those you love in order to shield them from uncomfortable truths. It's only natural that Rose would want to protect those she loves most. Her weapon is a shield, after all.

Her problem is that she did too much of it, and it ended up creating all sorts of problems down the line for Steven. Rose didn't know this would happen, but that doesn't mean that it's not her fault.

Hell, even Steven isn't immune from this behavior. The ending of "The Test" (a vastly underrated episode) is a good example of this.

Steven finally manage to capture Jasper. Though really, Jasper mostly fucked herself by trying to fuse with a corrupted Gem and getting an std out of it, finishing corrupted herself. Steven tried to help her before she went full corrupt, but Jasper rejected him, because she refuse the help of Rose, as, chocking reveal Jasper tell him that Rose actually shattered Pink Diamond as a way to save earth (it happened after she had bubbled Bismuth). Also, Steven And Amethyst managed to beat Jasper by fusing together and becoming an abomination known as Smokey Quartz, whose weapon is a deadly yoyo.

After this point the Five rubies are back and still trying to look for Jasper, This time, to fool them, Amethyst shapeshift as Jasper and through some convoluted means end up on the moon where they fail to communicate with the diamond authority (the communicator had blew up after Peridot had used it, remember?), but they almost manage to fool the rubies and departing away without the disguised Amethyst, up until she can't maintain her shapeshift anymore and blew her cover. The Rubies and Steven get jettisoned into space and Steven end up having a talk with the eyeball ruby in a bubble, where he learn more about her mother and how homeworld gem see her as a war criminal. After Eyeball try to kill him, he eject her from the bubble and the gem finally manage to retrieve him (they now have the ruby Spaceship). End of season 3.

in season 4, there is an episode where Steven face his inner struggle about his mother and an other where Greg get captured by Blue Diamond and the the CG go to visit an human Zoo, in space, using, the ruby ship.

You can take this two ways, how she omit's Rose's name when she says Pearl and Garnet are from space, or saying she was made on Earth "like you" not just in the sense of Steven being born on earth but his gem (Rose) was from earth.

Peridot also assumes (in 'When it Rains') that Steven emerged from the prime kindergarten with the simple line of logic "Yeah, you're some kind of quartz, right? You must have been made here.." Earth was primarily (if not exclusively) for creating Quartz gems.

There are a few signs that point to it not being so simple.

We know by Zuke's own admission that her idea of "Lapis and Peridot being a good couple" wasn't a group choice, which puts a whole bunch of questions regarding just how much of Lapis's current position was actually thoroughly discussed by all the writers, and wasn't simply decided by Zuke for her own episodes.

And while it's very murky, if it is true that Zuke got booted out of the show then that only furthers lends credence to the fact she basically went to business on her own for a while there, and the others finally got sick of it.

Granted, this is all speculation on people's behalf, but when you take into account Zuke's post, and how it seems like any writer other than Zuke aren't exactly sure how to handle Lapis alongside the other Gems, plus how FAST it seemed like Lapis joined the whole fray, it's enough to raise a few eyebrows.

The other writers seem content to just keep pushing Lapis aside as the "snarky, despondent cynic" until they need the plot to start moving again. I'd argue that a happy ending works best for a show like SU. Or, at least, a happy ending with a bittersweet feel to it. Steven starts to age, him and Connie grow closer and life goes on. MAYBE ties with Homeworld are rekindled etc. but that might be asking a bit much.

People's problem with Zuke isn't so much the position she placed Lapis in, but rather how quickly and without any effort she did so.

We get one episode where we actually see Lapis deal with her anger towards Peridot, and it ends on a slightly positive note. And after that, they're just instantly getting along well with one another.

Sure, you can say "a lot of time passed in between episodes", but that isn't SHOWING us the relationship building. "Show, don't tell" is one of the most basic rules of writing, and we weren't even told all that much to begin with.

You can criticize an episode for seemingly propagating a problem that you see has been going on in the show for way too long.

After this long, some people are just getting exhausted with how the show tries to flip flop between being a serialized story, or just an adventure-of-the-week deal that takes its time in whatever way it feels like doing.

Yes, it's important to distinguish a good episode and give it its due props, but the overall negative response I'm seeing for this episode still addresses the main issue: it just doesn't move the plot along far enough.

The show lost its right to use that excuse exactly when they started to focus on intergalactic shit and lore. The show is very clearly building up its backstory in the hopes of a grand reveal. You can't say it's a slice of life when you have Rose's secrets being made this big of deal on multiple episodes, or when you have characters like Jasper (before her bubbling anyway) who were villains out on the loose, and now you have the Diamonds possibly coming to Earth and abducting humans.

If Steven Universe wanted to be a episodic show about Steven and the Gems simply going through wacky adventures, with the occasional deeper character stuff tossed in the mix, it would have kept its monster of the week format.

Once it starts introducing plot elements, ones that are actually really interesting and people want to see more of, then it should move away from this mentality of "well, we're just doing slice of life stuff now, so we don't have to worry about that plot point until later!"

Sadly for me, this is slowly becoming more appealing.

I've often found myself not wanting to bother watching the actual episodes, and just read the synopsis online afterwards because of how slow the stuff I'm actually interested in actually move forward.

The New Crystal Gems only exacerbated this, to the point where I've considered only relying on word of mouth to know what's going on in the show, and only watch the episodes that actually seem to hold some consequence to the plot.

I know it's not a flawless method, but I can only bring myself to care about something for so long until I start to realize maybe it's just not for me.
