Suicide Squad did well in theaters because it was advertised as the Return of the Joker and his girlfriend, guest-starring Will Smith.

It's damn hard to find a single piece of advertising that didn't prominently feature the Joker in it.

NO. Its clear that Marvel only wants semi-competent directors who will do whatever the studio asks. Thats why Favreau left, thats why Wright left, thats why mutliple actors and directors complain about working with them. The only directors who managed to put a distinctive stamp on the marvel films were Gunn, who really was just a perfect choice for Guardians, and Shane Black, and we all know how fans reacted to IM3. As much as I hate the DC films, its pretty clear that Snyder had the freedom to put his vision on the screen, as shitty as that vision may have been. SS was a different story as WB panicked after the reaction to BvS and forced Ayer to produce that godawful piece pf shif, which is probably what they would do to Mel.

Last I knew, Wright was booted off because he took 10 years to do Ant-Man and wanted it to not be a part of the MCU when he finally got around to doing it. I don't know the story behind Favreau though, so I can't comment on him.

He's already working on the Passion Sequel, and like others have said, he could strike a deal with WB to finance and distribute his Viking movie if he does Suicide Squad 2. Plus doing a crowd-pleasing summer movie like SS2 might help is public image now that he's on the rebound.
