I could see this little fucker having some interesting adventures. Maybe something going on around him that he's totally clueless to, but nonetheless plays a significant role in. Like he stops a robbery by shitting in the crook's eye, but then as he's being taken away he knocks over a can of paint that splatters on the police car's windshield and it crashes and the guy gets away. that kind of shit. just meaningless go-nowhere plots that are fun to see through

So, I started making my website for my comic and I've been looking at the pastebin for do's/don'ts for starting a site, and it says not to host images on your domain, but to use Amazon's services instead. Any reason for that? Like, what are the cons of hosting images on your own domain?

Hey maybe you guys can help me with this. They're not going to be actual characters in the story but I do plan on some kind of epilogue, and it's gotta show who people marry, because Sasha, Robin, and Riven deserve happiness and hot dickings
I have some ideas in mind for the first two not Ryuko. stop asking, Lenoh. but the last one has me flummoxed. Who do you think she'll end up with? Will she be a foreveralone nerd? who's Robin going to snag? who could put up with her kookiness? and what do you think of this oni feller? We know she likes those, she jumped the bones of an 11-footer once

>>
>>89932843
you should never blindly listen to dos-and-donts, but I think the idea here is that Amazon provides good hosting and makes it a lot easier. Last thread we had a big discussion about the complexities of being the sole person responsible for keeping your website functioning, and not everyone can or should handle that

I rarely did anything comic related lately, but at least I got this lousy V-day update.
>>
>>89933631
The elf's quest is the very first arc in the comic, that triggers this loooong 40 page flashback we just came out of.
The writer has an idea of how many pages he will need to tell the full story, we have a list of the sagas and arcs it will have, so 200 is sort of a serious estimative of how many pages we will need, but each arc always takes one or two more pages longer than he anticipated.
We just finished the first saga with this flashback I think. What made you think it was winding down though?

>>89933789
Thanks, man. I used 3D models for the carriage, the staircase and the table scenes on the last 2 rows. Tried and failed miserably to use one for the city. I still rely on photos for references, but I highly recommend using sketchup to set up scenes.
>>
>>89934354
cute as hell
looks familiar though, did you start this earlier?
>>
>>89934747
ohh hahaha, flashback goodness. I thought that might be the case. So that was the thing with the cherufes. Man that is fantastic.

Well just because of the way things have come full circle (I recognized that much at least) and the talk of their final goal (buying an Inn) seemed to be getting more focus, I thought maybe they were going to finally settle down.. but I was hoping it wouldn't

I wouldn't THINK it was time to end it, but that comic about the girl fighting for the rabbits ended right after it started, despite establishing this huge, full setting with a giant tower populated by 12 kinds of animals, and we only saw four of them
>>
>>89934832

That's when I do my best ink work, desu. Helps me to "invent the line" rather than trace. My pencils have actually gotten way looser because of it.
>>
>>89932996
Yeah, I read that discussion, I was the person asking about it last thread. I am a complete newbie to running a website so anything to ease the repsonsibilities would be welcome for now, until I learn how to actually do this. My main concern is that I really have no idea how much Amazon would cost me because I don't know how much data would be transferred out every month, as well as how all the other fees would factor in.

If anyone else uses Amazon S3, how much does it cost you each month? Or if you don't use Amazon, how do you host the images to your comic?
>>
>>89936357
I wish I could help you but I do know that this is one of the most popular hosting options (Or it was like 2-3 years ago anyway) so it's kinda like Photoshop.. might be a lot of shit to sort out, but it's popular enough that there's tutorials all over the place. I'd be stunned if you couldnt easily find some help with this process

Huh. outlineless. I feel like maybe when you have a better grasp of structure you should revisist this, because aspects of it (especially the really clean shapes) are pretty cool... but for now your art really doesn't need something that relieves it of its structural boundaries. Kinda the opposite.
If you do continue with it though, make sure you think in 3d when you shade things. see how the beveled edges on sarah's hair and legs make them look completely flat? whereas the nice curved shading on the sweater gives it a little more depth. I've noticed you doing a lot better shading and shining on hair lately, not just sticking with rimlighting, so hold onto that and keep developing it!

Me and my friends threw ideas around, like some edgy stuff like ''Dangerous Days'', but that was already the working title of Blade Runner, so we changed it to ''Deadly Days'', and then I started doing some pretty terrible stuff like ''Royal Patrol'', either way Knight of Fire is the only title that really stuck with me, one because it's based on a song, two it really isn't about the other 3 characters as much as they're there to compliment the main one, but I still tried brainstorming about the titles but I just fucking suck at it, not even something like ''Futuristic Clusterfuck'' sticked with me.

Well like, >>89938648 said, Knight of Fire is used elsewhere, have you thought of taking a few more steps of separation? its cool to be influenced by a song or a term, but sometimes just using the words can be too on the nose. maybe translate it into some different languages, look at latin roots, find something striking and phonetically pleasing at the same time. for instance, "Knight of Fire" is "Eques Ignis" in Latin.

I've had to let go of that idea myself. I studied art from a practical perspective as a sculptor, getting into welding and drafting, so I've never taken many drawing classes, and the idea of tracing scenery or modelling a close up after a real person or a photograph bothered me. I felt like I had to be able to draw anything from scratch, so I don't use any kind of references. It shows in how long it takes me to complete things and in how stiff my work is sometimes as >>89937062 said.

backlog the shit out of it my dude

sit down a day youre particularly free and make like ten comics one after the other

and then as son as you have the chance do ten more comics

always draw more than you need, always have a couple of comics ready to go just in case

the good thing is that once you get into the rythm of making multiple comics it becomes natural

the only downside is this

Should we make it more obvious in the dialogue what the quest is about? We thought people would get right away what Valadares is talking about, we already saw the elf chief on page 5 and all that but... maybe we should add something like "they are having trouble with cherufes" to make it easier?

I have no idea what comic you are talking about, but don't worry, we will explore the continent of Abnor quite a bit still, after all, this is The essential backpacking guide to the continent for the professional adventurer on a budget, even if it doesn't do a very good job of being a guide.

Does anyone know a way other than wayback machine to recover lost images of a comic that is no longer up? I am specifically looking for para-ten.com, no idea what the author is up to now but never responds to questions about his old comic... (And frankly his new style does not have the same charm). I got most of the pages from wayback, but there are several missing, and was wondering if anyone knew of a similar archive or another way to get them back

I have mostly gone the lazy narnia route and had them just name-drop the real thing but er um it's probably slightly different in this universe yeah whatever. there's other magical beings, they're just explicitly at the same level as angels and demons, and there's plenty of statues and temples and crap littered around various areas.

your anatomy is a bit off here, crazyguy's right shoulder shouldn't be hitting that angle, especially considering the rest of his posture like the angle of his chest/back/left shoulder and left arm. rotating the shoulder and club forward to bring the club to roughly parallel with the ground would make more sense.

It's treating the general state of being as an object. basically "all I got was ((having) splinters)"
it's not supposed to be the same 'got' as in 'getting splinters' because he doesn't go into the sentence saying "all that I was the object of", he went in saying "all that I acquired in return" which is its own concept, and a concept can be singular.

think of it this way: would you say "all I got/saw/etc were you"? because you goes with were

I can feel myself starting to grope around for a consistent visual style here, which is a good thing. The designs are starting to evolve both visually and in concept - Annie's been renamed to June, to better fit her "introverted entomology nerd" theme, and Maude is back to being a sneering goth as I originally conceived of her. I think she's a better foil to the other characters that way. Plus, most of my other protagonists have been more chipper, so in a way it's more of a challenge - it is surprisingly difficult to capture that perfect level of boredom and disdain in a characters face, haha.

I think i'm going to try to get a short comic involving Oko out here soon, decided to use a future storyline with a fair amount of established lore to tell a decent story.

"Esper Girl Oko can no longer do without a mentor, but no Esper is willing to teach her. She must embark on a mission, traveling alone, to find the King of Espers, Lucas. On her journey, she will find the truth behind the Espers, their harsh rituals, and why it is a curse to most granted this gift"

By this point in the story, Oko has only met one other Esper, but this particular Esper has been especially cold to her.

>>
>>89959590
No need to completely ignore them. Maybe you'll decide against making one of them in the future and then you can just recycle a good scene from it. Commit to getting your current comic out in a timely fashion but plan the next few comics as a creative exercise. Thumbnailing is quick and fun. If you have the time you could get a backlog started on your next plot in the queue or even post both as you go.

Basically, schedule production time out but allow for off-subject brainstorming.

>>89959540
Yeah, I had to check someone's semi-private blog to confirm the one I was on the fence about. It really doesn't matter too much, it was just hearing any sort of notion of "back in the good ol' days we didn't have any girls" from bones of all people that made me wonder.

i hear how your saying it, but i didn't mean it like that. im not anti female, the more woman here the better, i meant back before obvious tumblr, rieddit and facebook people started posting here 4chan was good, i didn't mean the lack of females made this place great, some of my favorite artist are female like... um... i cant think of any right off the top of my head...

loish on deviant art she's awesome! and uh...

rosi toherras who makes unknown lands on comic fury and did some work for marvel and dc comics, she is awesome...

so like, the geometry is pretty wonky, but the shading here is really nice and the overall shape and size is actually comparable to a real house people could actually live in. Did you use a reference? This really feels like a 3d object for once. Just... a 3d object from pee-wee's playhouse or psychonauts or something. You're definitely getting better at this. If you patiently draw out carefully straight lines and shapes that have even widths, and carefully plan out where to put windows (say, not at the very edge of a wall) and things like that, you could really make a nice-looking house!

the thing you see and then punch someone isn't a punch buggy, punch buggy is the name of the game played when you punch someone for seeing a bug. and even that is only the trademark-friendly version of the game (not that VW has the trademark on 'bug')
that said, good pun. is it not supposed to be a play on that? because punch?

Well you have to actually get a decent following on Webtoons before you can reap any of the benefits, I think the minimum is 5000 subscribers for $100/month, and 10000 pageviews for another $100.

I don't want to directly discourage anyone with a snub or draw attention to particular artists as the "good" ones because some people get very bitter about that and might be unduly rude to them. A sweeping reminder to everyone to not become complacent serves the purpose of my post.

I also suspect my parameters for good writing are unusually high - even outside of HYW I'm hard-pressed to name good webcomics. All I know is that my eyes totally gloss over for most of the comics here and I don't understand the purpose of people writing them when they have no hook or any evidence of building up to one. Originality is another issue - a bit more forgivable, nothing's truly "original" anyway, but sometimes you've just really seen _____ premise a million times and they don't depart meaningfully from it.

"Different strokes for different folks" plays a role, I'm sure. I wouldn't target anyone specifically for my opinions. But it's hard to believe there's as much subjectivity in quality as would allow for any large number of the comics here to be considered "good", especially if technical skill is a factor.

That said:
Keep up the hard work, everyone! Comics are a media with incredible potential, and a lot of you do have that potential. I'd love for you to hit such a stride of improvement that even horrible snobs like me have to hand it to you, and if we don't, you'll still find your audience out there.

I haven't posted in this thread so I really don't want some faggot telling me to get better but why is it that all of the TERRIBLE art gets replies and the stuff thats either good or very close to good gets ignored?

It's also apparent that the terrible art is generally all digital and the decent stuff seems to originate from pencils. Do people in these threads ignore stuff that isn't strictly digital?

Again, I'm not trying to be salty; I don't have a picture sitting up above. I just genuinely flip through these threads whenever I see them and the only discussion seems to focus on the lower end art.

I get that, but you don't build a better baseball team by focusing on the 40 year old in AAA, you focus on the young stud.

Nobody is obligated to foster talent but a "good shit, keep it up." to me is better than a "its okay that your stuff isn't even as good as a Newgrounds Stick Figure DBZ episode, keep it up."

It just makes no sense that we softly encourage the terrible artists and writers who place blobs of color in a flat 6-panel layout, and completely ignore people employing any sense of originality or skill.

I have a lot of suggestions about this page, but the main thing bugging me is how static it looks when you have both characters viewed from the same angle and placed on the same sides so many times. A more creative angle for her song would really break up the monotony.

Also, a criss-crossing, single "ding dong ding" helps draw the imagery of a pendulum and give the song a sense of finality compared to the lump of words in the original version.

I'd also say you should raise the cleft and actually put the last notes on it, as well as lower the speech bubble since it could confuse reading order, but I didn't bother to make those edits.

>Statis means the characters aren't moving!

There is a swirling vortex causing ripples to rise up from the ground and bubbles to spawn and spread out through the air. This is not a rigid, tight scene. This is dynamic, wonderous, amazing. And yet, both that and the act of being picked up and squeezed emphatically are portrayed with rigidity and a lack sense for flow or presentation. They're just like every other panel.

If you don't agree, that's fine, but there's no need to passive-aggressively imply characters need to move for the scene to be presented in a more fluid manner. Hell, like I showed in my example, you don't even have to move their relative positioning to break the monotony if you're willing to be a bit more ambitious with your paneling.
>>
>>89973181
I disagree, every movement she has, especially her jumping, is done wonderfully dynamically. his stillness serves as a contrast indicating that he's just stunned by the mindfuckery going on

>>
>>89973289
>his stillness serves as a contrast indicating that he's just stunned by the mindfuckery going on
I...never said he had to stop being still? Hell, he's not still in the original third panel at all, he's looking around wildly, so much so that he nearly 180's. I said the panel composition is repetitive, which undercuts the page.

>and of course I'm not that guy
But I never said or implied you were, what are you even talking about?

>if I was that good I wouldn't feel the need to disagree with incorrect crit.

>what are you even talking about?
sorry when I heard " you don't even have to move their relative positioning to break the monotony if you're willing to be a bit more ambitious with your paneling." I thought you might mean 'you' rather than 'one' and wanted to make sure. Wouldn't want anyone to wrongly think it was that guy.
crit is incorrect most of the time, dude. it's okay to disagree with it, you don't have to lose your shit.
>>
>>89973705
>crit is incorrect most of the time
Criticism is analysis or judgement, usually disapproving but sometimes positive, of elements of craft. It is, by nature, subjective. It's just opinions. You can disagree all you want, but no criticism is absolutely correct or incorrect.

Now, please, put your trip back on.
>>
>>89973795
you sure as hell didn't phrase it as if it was your opinion, whereas I did. You clearly confuse the two since you thought I was the one acting like it was objective fact.
>>
>>89973886
Are you going to keep playing the blame game, or can we actually discuss comics with any level of detail? Because I wouldn't even mind you saying stupid shit like "most crit (opinions) are incorrect" if you could actually dissect things and provide the thread with some content.

I mean, seriously, go ahead, let's discuss the relevance of alternative angles and character positioning in relation to the flow of a page and its tone. You're adamant that my opinion is incorrect, so instead of just telling me I'm losing my shit or stonewalling me with a no, why don't you tell us what you think about this topic and why you don't agree with what I've suggested? It'll be more productive than this stupid back-and-forth.
>>
>>89974161
>if you could actually dissect things and provide the thread with some content.
I mean, I do that sometimes too. I don't have anything useful to say on this one though. I explained why I thought your critique was wrong, so we're good. You got to say a thing, I said I disagreed, you lost your shit and gave a bunch of objective-fact supports for it as if it wasn't merely your opinion, I insist those are wrong, but you needn't have said anything other than accepting disagreement.
>>
>>89974273
Okay, we're playing the blame game instead of actually contributing anything to the thread.
Got it.

>>89970849
Start with simpler things to build your internal references. Practice balls and cubes and the like, and make cute doodles out of them. You can have fun while studying the basics, which will in turn help you practice for more complicated figures later.

this is good advice

>Don't say Loomis because I practiced that fucking book and hated it. I can hold a pencil but shit just isn't turning out at all.

Look; if you hate the process of making art, then you are doomed to fail just like a person who hates exercise but wants to be fit.

It does take years of practice, you don't just download 'makeart.exe' to your brain and go at it. You have to teach yourself hand/eye/mind coordination and teach your mind how to 'see' the breakdown of proportions/perspectives. Loomis is a starting point not an end point.

Shits not looking the way you want it to? Then find out why. Develop the tools you need to deconstruct the image and problem solve with redlining anatomy structures or using perspective rulers/grides over the art that isn't 'turning out' the way you want. Then do it again and again until it sticks.

Remember, complaining and crying doesn't solve problems, it just convinces you that problems are unsolvable.
>>
>>89973111
But I'm talking about his houses. Literally thats all. I didn't respond to any of his character work. There's serious work to be done in that regard. Those three pictures of the house looked really strong. And he was told, in one of the few instances in which his style ABSOLUTELY worked that he needed to "correct" it.

Maybe he's not very good at character work but could do really well in background work. Would you say Maurice Noble needed to work on his line work and patience?

Mirroring your images to see flaws really helped me.

Draw on tracing paper, then flip to the other side to see what looks bad, awkward, etc. Go over the drawing and correct it, then flip back to the original side, erase it, and fix any mistakes that are still there. Don't stop until you have something decent, even if it takes 200 flips. Eventually it will sink in, and you won't even have to mirror your drawings.

Also, like >>89974430 said, practice simple construction with easy shapes.

Nature documentaries would probably be your best bet. Honestly, you should just plan on going to your nearest zoo and spend the day doing life sketches there. It's harder than doing sketches from photos, but you get a better sense of the masses and the movement of the animals.
Also, seconding this >>89976930 . Scientific illustrations of animal skeletons and muscle anatomy are very helpful.

>>89971619
The style may be intentional, but that doesn't mean it's well executed. The colors for the green house are actually very nice and realistic, I'll say that, but the nonsensical windows and bizarre balcony just don't look appealing. The house neither looks convincingly realistic, nor is it stylized well enough to be visually interesting.

Thanks, I picked up "The Artist's Guide to Drawing Animals" because it had some very nice skeleton and musculature drawings in it, so glad I'm on the right track there. Fortunately, I'm not interested in anything TOO exotic, so I should be able to find lots of reference materials. Just cats and bats for one comic idea and general suburb animals for the other.

I am going to regret this, but I am gonna give a straight answer this one and only time, because I think you deserve it: I hate delusional people who can't be reasoned with, I hate egotistical people, I hate att whores, and you manage to be all of them.

To make it simple, your drawings are bad, but you think they are masterpieces, and when people tried to help you with constructive criticism, you acted like a faggot. I understand your delusion comes from your autism, but that isn't an excuse for your bad behavior.
Meanwhile, the people giving you this ironic positive feedback recently are only feeding your already bloated ego, legitimizing your unwillingness to listen to fair criticism and giving you a pass to continue acting like an asshole, so someone has to take you down a notch and bring you back to reality.
I should make it clear that I am not the only one who does this, however. I watched your bullshit from afar for a few years before you gave me reason to mess with you even. You need to understand all these negative responses you get aren't from one mean douchebag guy out to get you. No, you brought this unwanted attention on yourself by being the douchebag, Bones.

You don't need to try to tell me you are not autistic, by the way, you are only lying to yourself, and this is not the problem anyway.

I hope I made my point clear. Feel free to reply with nothing but one out of the three images you have on your reaction folder and dismiss this response you asked for, I will just add this to the new don't reply to bones collage and move on.

How do you do your backgrounds? Good ise of colours and nice theory nothing particularly clashes or gets lost I'm so used to working in greys and blacks to create depth I'm bad when it comes to colours.

Things I wanna get better at:
Digitally inking confidently
colouring
speech bubbles.

the coloring is just flat coloring, there's really nothing to say about it. Minor shading here and there, done pretty well

I think your coloring is very competent, you use your blacks and flat colors well. I think the main thing you could improve on is giving your colors some more mood.
Like in this image >>89979520 I love the bright red of the goat in right in the center of the frame. It pops, the in-your-face brightness of the red feels loud, and silly coupled with the goat sign. But when you scroll down to the characters, they're colored in very neutral hues, neither particularly colorful or dull.
What kind of vibe do you want the characters/story to give off? If you want them to seem very silly and cartoony, a bright, colorful palette would work very well. Say you want to play on cute girls doing cute things in high school, you could make the palette very soft, with lots of warm colors and pastels. Maybe you want to play up the horror of the demon baphomet, you could use high contrast colors with lots of pure black. I dunno, I just think it would be nice if these colors had some more personality to them, whatever that personality might be.
>>
>>89978495

Your inking seems fine, unless you mean being less overly reliant on Ctrl+Z and redrawing lines constantly (but no one ever sees the lines you didn't draw).

For speechballoon shapes, to avoid them being too perfectly oval, you could practice drawing them freehand (which is what I do most of the time), or manually construct them using four anchor points and adjusting the handles. The latter is fiddlier than simply drawing a regular oval, but more flexible.

Regarding speechballoon tails: I think of them as a line that extends from the centre of the balloon outwards, so at the point where they exit the balloon, the angle should be somewhat perpendicular to the edge (or otherwise have the tail describe an arc pointing to the balloon centre).
Balloons 1 and 3 on your page do that, but 2 has the tail at an angle.

For panel 6 of that page, I would suggest changing the dialogue to (note line breaks):

Did...
Did she have
the head of...
an animal?
(It had to be a mask,
right?!)

Three dots in an ellipsis, one question mark.

Though they grabbed a bag in P5, Baph-chan doesn't appear to be holding one in P6 (straps from the left hand should cover it).

I'm literally writing these down on sticky notes around my computer, thanks man!

>What kind of vibe do you want the characters/story to give off?
I want it to be fairly bright/anime esque, as it's aiming to poke fun and celebrate those kind of cliches.

>Say you want to play on cute girls doing cute things in high school, you could make the palette very soft, with lots of warm colors and pastels. Maybe you want to play up the horror of the demon baphomet, you could use high contrast colors with lots of pure black.

I'd love to be able to incorporate both of these kind of palletes and really mash stuff up into a unique colour look.

>I just think it would be nice if these colors had some more personality to them, whatever that personality might be.
me too man, that's why I'm asking, and thanks for answering.

Here's an example of what I think are much better inks for another comic I did. Lot's of black, but I've shyed away from this because maybe I thought it wasn't tonally right?

These inks are great, man. Is this a full comic or just a single page? But yeah, I do agree with you, I don't think these inks would suit Baph quite as well, since Baph seems to have a much neater look to it. I do like all the black, though, maybe you could add some more black shadows, like under Baphomet's skirt and sleeves. You could even try making your lineart a bit darker too.

Aww thanks man, I'm racking my brain to figure out what brush I used, I think it was one I fucked around with by Kyle Webster.

It's a Full comic, part one of a (once two now) three parter, that's still being made, Currently only available physically but I'm thinking of releasing it on Tapas to celebrate it being a year old and to motivate me to do part two.

> I do like all the black, though, maybe you could add some more black shadows, like under Baphomet's skirt and sleeves. You could even try making your lineart a bit darker too.

Yeah I think I need to play with line weight more, I've only just got into doing inks in one stroke more easily. Problem is playing around with the art style takes time and I want to be able to deliver on time without upsetting narrative/reader flow.

Again thanks you guys, I've had a big boost in motivation this week and this thread has times it by 3. I just wanna get better and more serious about this.

The whole comic isn't gonna be like this, this is just intro legend stuff, although I'm thinking of keeping the "broken" panel borders when the narrative shifts to the past, which happens for the majority of the comic.

Thanks anon, I'm really glad to hear that the first pages grab your interest, which is exactly what I'd want in an intro

Does it look okay? I'm somewhat worried about the lettering being visibly clear
>>
>>89982008
I have some nitpicks, especially since the intro lore of a comic has to be PRETTY good to pull a reader in.. but I do like this in general, so keep that in mind as I pick your nits
The continents here are pretty uninteresting.. lump, lump, kinda shield-shape, and 'bottom corner of a continent shape'. That means no peninsulae, no isthmi, no bays... and their joined form is australia? easily the least interestingly-shaped continent. also, five? is that little eye in the middle a continent?
>>89982167
would they all have such similar flags? They look to me more like four squadrons of the same army. i love the symbols though, they fit in great with the following
>>89982210
great idea. I don't think I've seen such a neat way to define multiple nations in a war before. However, I'd make the wording a little more epic and less awkward, maybe like "those who" instead of 'the ones who'
maybe listen to some of the many other epic intros around to get more of a feel for the suitable dialogue tone. This is nearly there, but not quite
>>
>>89982167
I think the grave markers are too abstract to be discernible as anything but spears and splinters. If you showed more clearly where they penetrate the ground and turn up a little earth in each spot...
>>89982633
very green, but going by the golden streak on the house, the sun is out... this is just the shadow cast by the overhang, right? so in the shots looking behind her, shouldn't the sky be more bright and lit up and normal, not green and foggy? like only SHE is in the shade, right?
>>
>>89982665
Your lettering is pretty clear, the dark border helps keep in from blending in with the rest of the image. You might want to make the smaller text on page 2 a bit bigger, though, as it's a bit on the small size.
I think you might want to use a different font for this, however. From what I understand, you're going for this mythic, epic tone, but the font looks more fit for a powerpoint presentation than a legend. Maybe you could poke around a find a looser/fancier looking font for future pages?
>>
>>89983033
Yeah, it's supposed to be a moderately sunny day. Having the sky be greenish was deliberate, I wanted the world to look kinda perpetually gloomy. I dunno, you think I should add more stuff to the backgrounds and make the grass darker in them? I don't want the weather to look too foggy.
>>
>>89983833
well I'm just confused, is it moderately sunny or is it gloomy?
maybe if you put some patchy white bits in the background so it looks like the sun is peeking through here and there. even if it's a relatively blank background it seems like it should be very light with her standing starkly shadowed against it

it made me cry
i had to reread it all through again to make heads or tails of it though, no individual page really held the story.. but that's perfectly okay for a comic like this.

.. i mean, I'm looking at it now and realizing what I was calling a 'page' is a huge multi-page update.. but somehow each one felt kind of like one page. There were long stretches of just establishing scenes, or a long scroll-down with a few words, that kind of thing. Very artsy. I like it. Makes me wish I had better attention skills... and maybe if I was clever enough to figure out what it all means exactly. Ima be honest with you, episode 7 has me baffled.

They're twins. The one on the right died due to birthing complications, but because of their genetic similarity and high psychic potential he had "imprinted" on his brother in the womb, allowing him to live on as a sort of tulpa that can only take physical form through his brother's shadow.
>>
>>89989036
it's funny how rarely anyone tries to use twins in a setting where genes are keyed to something, be it magic or psychic stuff or some kind of ... well anyway it does happen with CLONES from time to time. And i love how it's equally likely that the clone was made to gank the genetically-keyed thing as it is that they were BOTH made in the first place with the genes required for the thing.
what?
right, well anyway even more interesting then, using a dead one.

Would be way better without the orange tint on that reveal panel. This, the different angle and the weird blur makes it look like it's a zombie jumping on him. It also kinda looks like a flashback, like he is remembering a similar traumatic moment... it breaks the flow of the scene and the subtle creepy vibe completely.

Also, the car in the last panel, is it the car from the mysterious guy?
His car is hard to understand in the previous page, first time I read it I thought it was a house, because of the stairs, and his wheels being GIGANTIC, the size of a door. And even then, I didn't realize there was a fence in front of it. The lines are so messy they blend with the car.
The car in the last panel also look closer and on the same level as the protagonist, very different spot from the last page.

Awesome. That very last panel could have used more reaction, but maybe he's in shock at that moment. Anyways really cool comic

You're completely right on all fronts, I thought the orange tint would add more shock, since the rest of the comic is mostly in cool colors. As for the car and the terrible perspective on it I completely agree, i've often struggled with drawing cars that don't look like a 3rd grader drew them, ah well, its all a learning process, hopefully.

I dig the 80's manga vibe. Cop lady in particular looks like a fun character.

You should work on refining your inking, though. Slow it down and focus on getting exactly the line you want, rather than a generalization of a line. Also since you seem to be using traditional methods, I encourage you to experiment with more reactive inking methods, like nibs or brushes.

Eyebrows showing through the hair is totally fine in my book, people who get upset about it are just being silly. Eyebrows are very useful for showing expressions, taking a few artistic liberties to show them when they would normally be obscured just helps your character's expressiveness.

Would you read a comic that published a short arc every month or so, rather than a page every week?

I think the format would have advantages. I can define my weekly work output in fractions rather than whole numbers - like, 2.5 pages a week for four weeks equals a ten page story at the next publishing date. As the workflow starts to get comfortable and my pace accelerates, I can start pushing for longer and longer stories, or cut out non-essential pages from my outline if I'm running against a tight deadline. Or just set aside a day when I'm feeling particularly productive to crank out five or so pages one after another.

Essentially, I'd be able to smoothly adjust my amount of output per publishing cycle without having to get people used to new update schedules. Plus, it would integrate really nicely with Patreon (in the rare chance anyone actually gives enough of a shit to throw money at me), since new stories would coincide with each new payment cycle.

Thoughts?
>>
>>90010753
Some comics work a lot better that way. It's not very satisfying and it can be inconvenient having to binge a lot of pages, but often you have no choice. it's just awkward if you forget what's happened because it's been so long in between. If it really is a complete arc, then you're good
>>
>>90010753
It could work, that's basically how lots of print comics function, but your main hurdle would be gaining a readership. When your comic is first starting out, it's easier to gain readers with many frequent updates to help get it in your readers' head that yes, this comic exists and you should pay attention to it.
If you decide to take such a route, I'd recommend building up a buffer so that you could post say, 3 new pages a week for a month or two before you switch to monthly format just to get that initial readership. Alternatively, start off by posting a long, 20+ page story all at once and spread that shit everywhere to get people's attention.

1MB, 1000x1551px
>>90010753
I think that 2 pages a week is an acceptable update rate, really. That is what I'll be doing.
Otherwise, I have thought about this a lot in my own stuff, and I think one should avoid deciding what pages are essential and not essential based on your rate of production.

And I'll need to rescan, pic related but it is done for now.
>>
whats a good way to actually get your comic noticed? I'm at around 400 readers but still get barely any traction or comments except for the odd few, I'm even hosting on most comic sites and tumblr.

What helped my comic actually get active commenters was just making some friends who also do webcomics. Sounds silly, but once I found some people to chit chat with who also do comics, we became friends of sort and we all actively read and discuss eachother's comments. Get yourself a twitter, check out #webcomicchat and follow some people you see there. Comment on their art, post your own, get out into the community.

>>
>>90010830

Yeah, the whole "remember what's going on" issue is one that I feel is important. I think if I'm careful it should be possible to maintain a subtle continuity without forcing the reader to remember precise details of the previous story (i.e. set each story in a unique time and location, maybe do a one-page recap sequence if previous knowledge is required.)

That said, a skilled writer could use that to their advantage, too, surprising their readers by reintroducing plot elements that they've likely forgotten by that point.

>>90010946

Good points. It's very hard to hook people on a comic that doesn't already have a sizeable backlog. Although teaser pages and blog posts could likely go a long way in reminding people I'm alive.

>>90011003

In my case, my writing tends to have awful pacing issues anyway so maybe it would be helpful for that? I don't know. It wouldn't be the first time that practical constraints have had a positive impact on someone's writing - IIRC A Christsmas Carol was written because Dickens was struggling for cash and in between works, and needed something short and sweet to toss out to his publisher to get him through the year while he worked on other projects.

I really need to work out a way to make my value and shading a bit more. I don't know what yet, but I'm at least trying to find a way to make this comic work out beautifully in black and white.

the characters themselves I'll have an easier time doing, backgrounds and HUGE scenes (if not colored) will be hell to draw and finish.

But i feel like this'll be both frustrating and fun when i figure this out.

So far I'm using Bijou here as a test for some shading and practice before i start polishing.

If it's made by a westerner in a manga art style is it really a manga? It looks like a manga, it reads like a manga so it must be a manga, right? Schrodinger's manga.

If it's made by a Mangaka in a Western art style, is it really a comic?

Osamu Tezuka was influenced by the animated cartoons of Walt Disney and the Fleischers. A lot of Western artists are influenced by the manga and anime they grew up with around the turn of the century. What goes around, comes around, and everyone influences each other.

Comics, manga, manwha, bande dessinee, etc - it's all the same thing, ultimately.
>>
>>90010753
>>90011003

Yeahh I'd say while the "arc" maybe could encapsulate I think leaving large gaps in between posts would be detrimental.

You also don't want to be "too productive" for a period and then when you slow down a bit people's interest begins to waiver.

Maybe try to do like a 2-5 page per week thing (every weekday post one) with a a cover ebook/pdf or something to when the arc is finished.

If you out-pace yourself you'll always have some tings in the can in the event that you slow down or have to stop for a bit.

I agree.

Overall I think this is a subject that isn't talked about enough. WRITING. Comic artists tend to ignore that part. They practice their skill when it comes to illustrating but it seems many don't study storytelling the same way.

At least that's my problem with a lot of webcomics. Almost daily I check out a new webcomic that seems to be nicely illustrated but I can't get past even 10 pages because
-the dialogue is poorly edited, unconvincing, too long or just irrelevant, feels like work to read, and I find myself skipping it
-the story fails to introduce characters properly, starts with a motherfucking prologue, which I hate, telling us about the world, or just skips all that and tries to be exciting but really starts from the wrong place and you stop because you're too confused, bored and don't care
- No structure. No promise of a theme. No hook.

Those are some common problems I have as a reader. And yeah, in my limited experience, it seems women are better writers in general. Yes, I know. I haven't made a statistical analysis or anything. It's just that the only webcomics I can think of that are well written are made by women. If my assumption is correct, I think it might have something to do with fanfiction writing, which is probably how young girls get into the hobby. They just write a lot.

Ayy nice to see your keeping up with your comic man. And here i am still trying to re-educate myself about some fundamental art skill i.e (Learning Anatomy, Shading and Value and etc).

Can you believe I've spent years practicing only line art and some shading...

Anyway sorry but i actually saw this character and i wanted to do some practice for my comic. But hell you get free fan art.

>Keep it up, if you need tips or help finding resource to learn new tricks just ask.

Fu is great character design by the way, there's so much i can imagine you doing with this little guy.

I had a similar issue. I was thinking about various settings for a comfy light-heartened fantasy adventure to contrast my dark and edgy one.

My first idea turned dark pretty quickly when the protagonist, a Kokiri or Peter Pan type of character, left her forest and had some party member die. I realized the protagonist would have never heard of death and probably react like a toddler that thinks they're just sleeping forever

it's Jacques. With a C. Trust me, I'm french.

By the way, I posted my comic a few times here.
I'm planning a reboot. It's about a french heavy metal band becoming famous fast, thanks to the power of memes and badly written songs.
Think Metalocalypse, but in a more grounded setting and huge titties. Could ya dig it?
I'm in need of some critic on the character design and maybe references.

Nothing's perfect, but they're decent enough. The perspective on the interior lines of the closet seem a little off, but probably not so much that it would bring a reader out of it.

Suggestion for the next thread topic: magic systems. Does magic (or something similar to it) exist in your setting, and if so, how does it work? What's possible, and more interestingly, what's NOT possible? Who can use it, and how do they advance their skill?

Since I'm making a comic centered around the use of magic, I thought it would be neat to hear other people's takes on it.
>>
>>90048644
Thanks! I've been trying to make more use of custom brushes recently for things like bushes and other foliage. I don't know if it's quite as good as if I painted everything by hand, but it sure is a lot faster.

sounds gay as fuck, where's that guy writing about the shadow magic wolf character on a magical journey, he'd fit right in

I think a more interesting question would be why, from a storytelling perspective, magic works the way it does in your comic.

I think you're suffering from selection bias, and also the reification of your own tastes as an objective guideline. The idea that male/female exist on a spectrum of quality determined by their genitals in terms of WRITING is actually laughable. I mean what other socio-economic data have you factored in and out of your analysis?
Lol.

Well, I mean, the way I see it, if I spend 20 hours on a page that takes a minute to read, but it then gets read 5000 times, my audience will have spent over four times as long on it as I have.
Might as well do my best, right?

Thanks!
Hopefully I'll have a page done every Wednesday (well, every five days if everything goes perfectly, but I'm only gonna be uploading once a week until I have a decent buffer), but I'm going through some money issues so I might have to reduce the updates so I can focus more on that. And yeah, I know I should try monetizing the comic with Patreon or ads or something, but there's a long list of things I need to get out of the way first before I wouldn't feel like I was ripping people off. I am working on it.

I see what you mean, he's supposed to be a hunchback, so if the hunch is on his right his arm would have mobility problems. I'll try to convey that a little more clear, I'm redrawing the first chapter over again after /ic/ said I was shit.

If you're considering social factors, the idea that women are more in touch with emotions and more perceptive to subtleties in character is hardly a revolutionary idea. This doesn't have to be biologically inherent to be effective in practice, and of COURSE there are massive departures from this on both sides, but if you consider characters to be the soul of a comic, that's where you might start to see a gender divide.

What I see is that a lot of male writers go for shock and awe in actions but slack on investing the reader emotionally. They'll kill off the lover but neglect to show the relationship she had with the main character in the first place. They'll focus on worldbuilding and systems over character development. They'll write dialogue based on what sounds funniest or coolest but when you actually read it back the characters just feel like props. They'll keep ramping up the action but miss out on what people actually wanted, which was to take a second and go back to level one where the characters actually talked to each other like people.

Whether you enjoy this kind of writing or not is subjective, and like I said, this absolutely doesn't hold true for all men in writing. Some of my favorite, most nuanced characters came from men. These are just some trends I've noticed.

Well, I did - wasn't posting any pages from jan 19 to feb 15.
So far it looks like I'll be able to get the comic back on schedule while simultaneously fixing my RL problems.
