Pyrrha wanted to be a hero, I.E. triumph over impossible odds.

Key word, impossible. She expected it to happen sometime far down her life, something that was built up like some fantastic fairy tale story.

But of course things moved rather quickly, right? Ozpin offered her a fantastical shortcut, and even as that opportunity was ripped away from her, she still had a chance.

Only that when Jaune had offered her something that actually tied her down to the world that had once been so distant to her.

Because of this there was actual hesitation and doubt - especially since things happened so quickly.

But at the end of it all she stayed true to her belief and put everything into one massive gambit... and failed.

Call it stupidity but she wanted to be that underdog hero.

The Rebellion is akin to the American Revolution, they stand no chance on a faction vs faction basis, but you don't have the entire Empire fighting the entire rebel fleet. The individual soldiers and ships of the empire aren't particularly stronger, so they have a fighting chance as long as they lay low and fight smart. The whole point of Rambo is that he is outnumbered but a total badass such that each individual is easy.

You can't compare that to Pyrrha's idiotic choice. This was a 1v1 fight where she charged straight in, not a prolonged guerrilla war. Ozpin had just told her she was so weak that all she'd do in a 2v1 fight against Cinder is get in his way, and Cinder had just bested Ozpin. She stood no chance.

In 2013 maybe Monty said "Yang will start off happy go lucky, then get sad, then lighten up a bit, and then X happens and now she's X", and that they'll stick with that formula even if other shit they do causes that predetermined personality profile from making any sense later, all because that's what Monty wanted.

They seem to have this "All the important shit has been planned on long ago" mentality, but I worry that they won't actually change any of that shit if it no longer fits.

Just look at Pyrrha.

Cinder Fall killing her was always the plan.
However, Cinder Fall being a maiden wasn't a thing until right after volume II.
If they went with the original plan, it would have been two huntresses close in age and skill fighting eachother to the death. Pyrrha would have had a realistic shot against Cinder without the magic bullshit powers, which means her going up there to kill her wouldn't be a suicide mission. Her loss would have instead been legitimately tragic, and they could have also portrayed Cinder Fall as being in legitimate danger instead of being a cat playing with her food.
This would have given Pyrrha's choice a leg to stand on.

But then they decide that Cinder is now this glorious magical maiden with OP powers that shits on much stronger individuals than Pyrrha.
So now instead of them being able to portray Cinder and Pyrrha on more equal footing, and Pyrrha losing a fight she had the potential to win, something they decided to do later in development just made that prior decision look weak, Pyrrha's character suffering a bout of retardation just to make it fit because god forbid they change old decisions to accommodate new decisions.

It's a mixed bag and depends on the mindset you go into it with.

If you're expecting a full production cartoon with 11/22 minutes per episode, you're gonna have a rough time in the first two seasons. It was produced on a shoestring budget on a tight schedule by a tiny team for a while before they finally started upping their game.

If you take that into account you'll probably make it through to the jump in quality of season 3. That's not to say the first two seasons don't have very good moments, but it'll have some questionable/poor moments as well.
