>>
>>89851404
Lord no it's not. TOS is out-and-out boring trash for large stretches of its run. TOS is only second best if you only judge based on the very best episode in the series, because outside of those episodes it's a whole giant pile of nothing
DS9 > TNG > Good TOS > Enterprise > Bad TOS > Voyager

>>89851090
Is everyone polarized about DS9? Around here people say it's the best quite often, but nobody I knew got into it, and I remember trying to watch it back when it was new a few times and it didn't really stick with me.

DS9 suffers from the same thing that hampered early TNG

"You know. 1966? 79 episodes, about 30 good ones."

I'm not going to defend the entire thing. A lot of TOS is bad. At the same time, I think you have to take things on their own terms. TOS is interesting to me because it's so obviously experimental TV. It's neat to watch something that would almost become a genre unto itself being set up by people who were obviously just desperately improvising a show. And sometimes it even managed to work.

>>
>>89851864
The show has to be marathoned. When it was airing one new episode a week with hiatuses between seasons it was harder to follow all the continuity of the show and given how character driven the show was, the character development was subtle. Also if you missed an episode chances are you missed something important in later seasons.

Not that you should skip the early seasons.

The show did an excellent job establishing the relationships between characters in early seasons, especially Jake and Sisko, Kira and Odo, Quark and Odo, Dax and Sisko, to name a few and the characters that didn't mesh got worked on like with O'Brien and Bashir not liking each other at the start and Bashir being a shit in general at the start of the show and growing out of it.
>>
>>89858489
She's been in an Adult Swim parody show. Doubt anything done here could phase her.

So we've got just the ones with facial hair. The ones with the known ridges which came to be thought of as the standard (ones from TOS were mutants or altered spies or something)

Now these guys who look more like Tolken orcs or something out of Riddick.

I think the designs could work for something, but not Klingons.

The black pointy armor doesn't fit the aesthetic of known Klingons well.

It's an incredibly important series for Western culture. Not just for TV, but for technology, and multiculturalism.

Also, when you're studying Shakespeare, it is a blast to see all of the similar writing techniques Roddenberry uses.

Plus, it's just fun watching the low budget magic, and how the friends think their way out of situations.

While DS9 is very good it never made the leap into pop culture like the original series or TNG. It never entered the cultural zeitgeist.

Voyager and Enterprise also failed in that regard (in additional their other repeated failures)
>>
>>89871800
Probably because TOS and TNG had better casts of characters.

DS9 was better at balancing the huge extended cast.

Voyager was under a network mandate to rehash TNG after being pitched a show for something completely new.

Ent was pitched as a rehash as TOS and one of the two guys most heavily involved in the show was so obsessed with time travel plots he made a show about one.
>>
>>89871800
that's BS. DS9 is loved by many fans of the show, it's just as popular as TNG. There is some criticism over it being a rip off of Babylon 5 (which is right), but other than that people loved the over arching plot.

For me, why it still lags behind TNG is the actors. In TNG the characters that don't get much development, like Riker and Jordie, are still playing by amazing shakespearian actors. It also helped that they went behind the camera and directed a lot of the show, they were very invested. In DS9 the best actors were from TNG, Colm Meany and Dorn (the captain was great too). But other than that, and Quark, the rest were pretty blande actors

For all of the talk about everything except ST:TAS, one of its episodes sticks in my memory as a testament to the fact that Gene did try to continue addressing subjects that would otherwise be considered taboo in prime-time television, let alone Saturday morning cartoons: "Jihad."

To take on the subject of religious extremism, including incitement to war in the name of religion, was not a popular subject. The fact that the show managed to address it, even on the small scale that it did, was always impressive to me. (And, yes, I saw it back then. I'm old. So there.)

How many kids who saw the show had to ask an adult what jihad was or look up the definition of jihad after that episode?

The showrunners of ST:TAS did a great job of balancing entertainment with meaningful stories. On a Saturday morning cartoon. On NBC, in 1973. That makes it prime /co/.

>tfw downloaded Star Trek Online on my PS4 for shits and giggles
Its so fucking bad man. If it weren't for the fact that its Star Trek I wouldn't be able to tolerate how bad it is.

And by extension, the reason we have trump, by forcing Hillary to run again in 2016

It is kinda amazing how Voyager is the only time she's ever been remotely attractive. Being made a Space Pixie does wonders I guess.

>but the writing was fine

Didn't they get actual Sci-Fi novelists at the time to contribute plots?
>>
>>89876512
I think so, I know Larry Niven wrote an episode

I think they did that for TOS itself too though?

He didn't write an episode, he reworked one of his stories (The Soft Weapon) into "The Slaver Weapon". More fur bait in the Kzinti.

What might have been if Paramount had given Filmation more than $20 and some S&H Green Stamps per episode to make the series.
>>
>>89881643
At least he got to write an episode

So will the animates predict the future and will Chekov be replaced by E.T.'s weird uncle.

Yea if Obama had just taken position as her Veep back in '08 then he'd be President right now. Weird.

If Jeri Ryan being Jeri Ryan doesn't turn you on then I have news for you. She is magic and gives a boner to both men and women, and the fact that she is so sweet about it adds another layer

god, this album was so good. You may not get it from this song but this album gets fucking dark. There is a song about finding his wife after she committed suicide. and there is also a great song with Henry Rollins. 10/10 album

I have really high hopes for ST D, after the casting it looks like they are going in the right direction. It's a real release to me after the stupid JJ Trek

I was pretty bummed about Fuller leaving but I'll still give it a shot
>>
>>89883811
he didn't leave, he's still a producer. But if he can put the right people in the right places, that's all he would have done in the first place.

Because it was the 70's, pre-Cheetarah starting the furry craze. Believe it or not, cat-people weren't that widely used at this point. And if they were, they usually served as bumbling sidekicks for the "Hank Handsome: Space Adventurer" stand-in.
>>
>>89883447
Nah I can't. Everything I've seen I can't say they know what they are doing.

Planning it out during the height of the boarder disputes and skirmishes with Klingons has promise but not enough for me to want their digital service for one show.

Are those the comics where the artists/writers barely knew what Star Trek was?
