I don't think it's too hard to imagine how Peridot and Lapis' friendship could have developed between Barn Mates and Beta, but I find that it seems a lot worse than it actually is due to the general lack of focus on Lapis. She's been very limited to her screentime and interactions with different characters, and it's frustrating that her character at the moment pretty much revolves entirely around her friendship with Peridot.

Their friendship isn't actually a bad thing in itself, it's the lack of focus on Lapis as an individual which is the bigger issue.

The lack of screentime for Lapis makes me think, if they're gonna shatter one of Steven's gem buddies, she's the prime candidate

I feel like Zuke has a lot on mind for Lapis that she isn't able to portray due to the restrictions of what she has to storyboard, as well as how much she gets to storyboard. To be honest, the reason the other writers probably seem more genuine is the fact, besides Sugar, they haven't talked about their own interpretations of the characters and how they like to write them. 90% of the Crewniverse retains the silent treatment towards the fans, and consequently, they receive little criticism.
