So yesterday someone posted about how the Hourglass of Time in "Steven and the Stevens" was a major plot hole (introducing time travel and all). But consider the following:
The Hourglass of Time doesn't actually do time travel at all. What it does is simulate possible futures, then create artificial duplicates of things from those simulations when it hits points in the simulation where they used the time thingy to "come back."

Its intended purpose is to be used as an alternative to sapphires (and it may even be powered by a damaged / shattered sapphire) - you activate it, it simulates possible futures, and since you know how it works, the simulated versions of you eventually "come back", causing the time thingy to create simulacrums of you to report on the possibilities they saw.

This explains why everything it created dissolves when it's destroyed (a feature it shares with Pearl's replicator, which similarly seemed much more powerful at first glance than it really was in practice - its destruction revealed that all its duplicates were somehow "fake" and depended on it to keep existing.) It also lets us avoid all the paradoxies and oddities of time travel.

For instance, why didn't Homeworld use it to undo the rebellion or save Pink Diamond? They can't. It's not a time machine, it's a simulator used to predict likely futures (the same way Sapphires do), just with an interface that makes it seem like a time machine from the perspective of simulated duplicates inside it who don't know how it works.

In other words, what actually happened in the episode is this:

* Steven touched the time thingy. It immediately started simulating possible futures. Most of the rest of the episode follows one simulated Steven in one of those simulated futures.

* Eventually, in that simulation, that Steven used his (simulated) time thingy to try and go back to the moment the time thingy was activated. At that point, the (real) time thingy created an artificial body for him in the real world. It could continue to fake the duplicates using time travel as long as it was able to predict what the final outcome would be, but the real Steven wouldn't have been able to use it like that (that's not what it actually does.)

* The simulated Steven we were following smashed the real time thingy. This caused all the simulations to end and all the duplicates it had created to dissolve.

I like her apathetic personality in contrast to the CGs, it's perfect for a semi-side character. Her interactions with Steven are the best out of any Gem. There are other reasons people may have, but it really boils down the fact that she was introduced in the 26th episode of the show and still gets very little speaking roles so it's fucking Christmas when she's even in an episode or comic

The thing is, every other character has a very established and stand-out personality. Lapis has flip-flopped on hers since her first appearance and now it feels like they never quite nailed her down. Thus she's the character that fluctuates the most between writers and it never quite seems like they know what to do with her.

In my opinion, Lapis is a character that needs to be involved with some kind of drama to shine. When she's in the mundane, her lack of personality comes out and she falls flat. Lapis' "personality" is semi-detached angst sprinkled with a hint of the happy gem she could have been.

lapis is my favourite character in theory: she's an unimaginably powerful gem who takes out her inner turmoil by emotionally manipulating and abusing others. i love her when she's inside malachite, and she's great in her debut, jail break, chille tid & alone at sea. she has so much potential there, and i try to block out the shitty characterisation of her in episodes like gem harvest. it makes me so mad that the crew fucked up what could've been a great character in order to push the ~lapidot~, and that's coming from an autistic level lapishit shipper. she's had literally zero development and has no concrete personality, & i wish the crew gave her an arc based around malachite instead of having her "heal" offscreen. i feel like there might still be time to give her proper development, but i don't see the show going in that direction anytime soon.
