25 years ago a bunch of Marvel artists left the Big Two and decided to form their company, with blackjack and hookers. This company would eventually become the closest to a third competitor for DC and Marvel (lol) and the best known creator-owned comic book company out there.
This week it's time to put the spotlight on the "second wave" series, those books that weren't created by the founders but still managed to be an important part of the company's history.
Next up is probably the best creator-owned superhero series of all time, Kurt Busiek's Astro City

If I remember what I've been told right Astro City avoided the super edge Image was kind of famous for in its early years doesn't it? I remember hearing it described as a love letter to older comics stories. Certainly feels like it so far.
>>89784785
That's right, yeah. It's like a non-malicious Kingdom Come.

Oh jeez, all those leftover |'s in those voice boxes. I can't help but read his inner monologue in Chico Marx's voice.
"Some sorti of Weather Disaster-i, probablyi anotheri typhoon."
>>89785781
Yeah, I have no idea what happened there.
You're all at the Savage Dragon thread, aren't you? Goddammit.
>>89786676
I'm reading.
>>89786732
Good, steer clear of shitposting and /pol/ baiting. It's for the best.
Oh, I love Astro City! I remember when I did a complete storytime of it about a year and a half back. Busiek is definitely one of the most consistent writers in the business.
>>89787277
You were the guy who introduced me to it, so thank you.
Oh shit. Murderanon, you're back! I love this series. Very comfy.
>>89787583
I've been back since like a week, my man. If you're wondering when Invincible is coming back, should be at some point in March, probably.
>>89787583
It did have its sad moments. Like the silver agent's entire story.
Or that one issue about a guy remembering a girl who doesn't exist. Only later its revealed that she was his wife and doesn't exist because a supervillain broke time and the superheroes tried their best to fix it by rebooting it. So in the new timeline her parents never met but the guy still remembers her. It's even stated that he isn't the only one who lost someone special due to the unknown reboot.
I genuinely fucking cried over that.

To be fair, that was HIS fault, but yes, probably one of the saddest cape stories of all time.

its nothing like Kingdom Come at all
>>89788097
I don't mean literally Kingdom Come, I mean in the sense that they both went against the trend of extreme 90's antiheroes, but while KC was very aggressive in its posture, Astro City just... is, it doesn't attack 90's stuff, it just shows you why Busiek prefers classic heroes.
>>89787852
Wait who's fault? The guy didn't mess with time. Th villain did, unless you were blaming him.
>>89787782
Fuck you for making me remember anon.
>>89788348
>The guy didn't mess with time
Yes he did.
>>89787782

It sucks that he was wrongly executed but at least he had a great life in the far future thanks to time travel.

>This week it's time to put the spotlight on the "second wave" series
Wait, were Hellshock and Astro City really in the second wave? I think they were out in 1994 and 1995 respectively. The stuff from 1993 (that weren't owned by Image founders) was Pitt, Maxx, 1963, Phantom Force, Shaman's Tears, Trencher, Stupid, Tribe, and Wildstar.
There was controversy back in 1993 because Image took the books not by the founders off the table over delays:

Like I said last time, I'm not being literal with the "second wave" terminology.
If I went by the actual waves per week we'd be here all year.
>>89786701
Dump a dump
>>89788551
Also I'm surprised to find out Big Guy and Rusty was going to originally be published over at Image at first (though that explains why there was a Spawn poster by Darrow with Spawn, Big Guy, and Rusty)
Boy, /co/ is gonna LOVE Winged Victory in this.
>>89786035
Holy fuck N-Forcer's design is amazing!
>>89789715
>the alien is just /co/ nitpicking
i love him
>>89790313
>>89790280
>>89790253
why is he so perfect?
>>89790339
I'm not gay but he's definitely a top tier husbando
>>89790401
This series has lots of good ones
Steeljack is my favorite
>>89789911
Loved this one.
That's all for Astro City. More second wave Image tomorrow!
>>89784229
Bless you murder, Astro City is my favorite book of all time. Hard times when Busiek was sick and his output slowed to a trickle, but I'm glad it's been monthly again for the past few years. Still great.
Is the new series any good? Dark Age was the last thing I read
>>89789099
>Confessor; no known photographs
Busiek really had this world well thought out right from the jump.
>>89790976
Astro City never stops being good, anon.Although there is one issue in the new volume that may have triggered /co/
>>89791274
Which one? You mean the one where the teenage evil genius uses super science to turn himself into a girl after realizing that the bullies at his school were right about him?
>>89791461
Yep
>>89791461
That sounds like it would be /co/'s favorite issue.
>>89791620
>>89791622
Well since that part of /co/ doesn't care enough about Astro City to raise a fit since it does not a movie or tv show yet, I highly doubt that anyone got that triggered by it. I did see a thread when it first came out but few cared since these were unknown characters.
bumpo
>>89788185
Busiek>Waid.
>>89789911
Can't really blame the guy, would do the same
I love the single issue between the low ranking reporter (I think), and her boss. It was a nice change of pace, though I guess the entire series is that. It also had an excellent ending, with the entire office being melted by an alien because the boss was telling lies about them
