25 years ago a bunch of Marvel artists left the Big Two and decided to form their company, with blackjack and hookers. This company would eventually become the closest to a third competitor for DC and Marvel (lol) and the best known creator-owned comic book company out there.
This week it's time to put the spotlight on the "second wave" series, those books that weren't created by the founders but still managed to be an important part of the company's history.
First up is the story that went against all expectations, Sam Kieth's The Maxx
It's been fifteen years since I first came across Maxx and I STILL have no clue what the fuck is up with his face.
>>89731178
I think it's meant to be a cartoony kind of design. But yeah, I don't know either.
>>89731302
>using the fuck you finger as weapon
>>89731668
>dat ass
>>89731107
Fun fact: Sam Kieth's cousin is David Feiss, creator of "Cow and Chicken".
>>89731178
I remember seeing some article about Maxx's face mask and why it's so weird looking. From what I remember it was suppose to be a mask that would fit on a horse's face.
>>89731746
Did not know that
>>89731178
I held off on reading it when my friend lent me a volume because his face looked so goofy.
>>89731107
Will be interested to see what you pick for this week. What time period is it covering? All the way to Chew?
>>89732890
All the way to Invincible/TWD, but pretty much just mid 90's-late 90's stuff.
Anyway, if you want to spoil yourself, this is what I'll be storytiming this week:
The MaxxPitt
Hellshock
Astro City
Witchblade
Battle Chasers
Tellos
>>89733064
Cool, a good mix of forgotten good stuff and big series.
>>89733184
It's funny how some of the forgotten stuff there was actually pretty big at the time, but for some reason ended up becoming obscure.
>>89733214
I think the thing with Image is that they became super uncool in the 00s so everyone just pushed all their 90s comics out of their mind. Unless it's still published today or got a revival in the 2010s (so, only the stuff by the founders) it got forgotten.
>>89733291
Yeah true, which is why I decided to add another week from before 2012. There's a lot of good pre-Saga stuff that ended up forgotten.
Alright, I don't know what's going on with my internet right now
>>89731178
He's actually ainsane hobo in purple spandex wearing a lampshade on his head as his "mask"
There's a whole arc post-Mr-Gone where he "depowers" and is kind of just openly walking around as non-90's non-zany Max, and he's just... grubby. It's honestly pretty brilliant. The implication is that the gritty 90's look exists only in his head.
>>89733604
is that a... Butthole Surfers shirt?
This is fckn great
Nice thread OP, I was actually thinking of storytiming the Maxx but I never did 'cause I'm a lazy piece of shit.
Are these the Maxximized recolours? They look a bit different from what I'm used to.
>>89734049
These are (very good) scans of the Image originals. I considered running the Maxximized stuff but I want the Image logo.
>>89734194
She has 2 left feet
And that's all for now. Come back in a few hours for more second wave Image!
>>89735170
Gods work anon
>>89735137
This was a pretty fucked up comic. I'd forgotten.
>>89734049
>>89734102
the Maxximized recolors are... not good (in my opinion). i have a comparison image on a different computer but it's very similar to the Sandman recolors, if you're familiar with those--they basically tone down or remove all the garish 90s colors, which does make it look more "modern" but also takes a lot of the emotion and style of the originals away.
>>89735170
this was grande
Give me more.
>>89735170
WHERE ARE YOU I'M DYING HERE.
>>89738275
>>89738844
Sorry, only doing the first arc. Maybe someone else can take over.
>>89734049
>>89734102
>>89737437
The Maxximized recolors were unnecessary and I don't really care for them.
But their biggest failing was in all the lettering fuck-ups. For instance, in the Maxximized version >>89735137 makes no sense, because the letterer attributed all the text boxes in the bottom splash to Julie, so it looks like she's talking to herself.
There were other shoddy lettering fuck-ups, too, and they kill the whole project. Maxximized was supposed to be an "improvement" over the originals, but the numerous lettering mistakes make it considerably worse.
Does anyone else get seriously reminded of Calvin and Hobbes by looking at Sam Keith's artwork?
It totally reminds me of Watterson's art style.

>>89734931
goddamn
>>89740959
There's shared influences, particularly Eisner.
Between >>89733298 and >>89733445 were six letters pages, pic related is the first.
>>89734370
damn, ya done caught sam on a flim flam
>>89746729
and between >>89734258 and >>89734436 there were four letters pages
>>89733064
I remember liking Pitt at the time. Haven't read it since. Curious to see how it's held up.
The Maxx is fucking great
It's a feminist comic that actually has a brain
>>89747180
>It's a feminist comic
Please don't ruin it for me. I love The Maxx and I don't need to hear it was meant to be a feminist comic.
Damn it.
I can still hear the voices from the series.
