Sadly, the first volume is arguably needed to really enjoy the rest, for things like context for later events and character development (at least I found it that way). Mike and Lucy's relationship and its changes in the later comics doesn't have nearly as much weight if you don't see how they acted at the beginning.
The "Cat Comic" saga doesn't last that long, the latter end of vol 1 starts to resemble the modern comic more.

We also know from the character relation chart Lucy no longer likes him and considers him untrustworthy while Mike feels "complicated" towards her, which of course means he's struggling with at least some feelings of still having a crush on her.

Factually at the current present in the comic Mike is the parasite and at some point in the next few chapters (which is like a year, so you can enjoy this one coming to crush your opinions from a long and obvious way off) will attempt to rekindle his friendship with Lucy at which point she'll tell him to fuck off.

You're right, it was too late. Doesn't mean I didn't start enjoying her character more for it.

It's why Bojack Horseman got so popular, aside from the comedy. It's compelling to see a flawed character try and be a better person despite it being a hopeless cause.

The reason why "December" stings so much is because she finally figured out the key to winning back Mike as a friend was to stop looking at it from a self-serving perspective and just be a supportive friend. Make him laugh. Be a positive influence. Be supportive of Sandy instead of a wet-blanket. It was beautiful to see her finally get a point where I could be respect her effort, even if it was too late and blew up in her face.
