Here is something interesting: all 4 shown Salem's subordinates seem to work with her out of their own interest. Tyrian seems to be emotinally dependant on her admiration. Who knows what is up with Hazel and Watts. But what if she is keeping Merc and Em as hostages as a failsafe for Cinder?

Tyrian seems to be the most devoted to Salem, I'm curious about his background and how his intense devotion came to be, if his 'insanity' grew purely from the devotion to her.

Would make some sense for that to be why Cinder was so drawn back by their interaction, not wanting to see herself become as Tyrian has, so torn apart by simple disappointment when shortly before that she had disappointed Salem herself.

I don't see this heading toward a redemption arc, but I do see Cinder trying to keep herself from hanging on Salems every word.

This. Cinder prided herself on his wits and was fairly skilful and efficient in battle.

Seeing Tyrian as a psychotic lunatic brought to tears and rage and senseless brutality at the mere thought of Salem's disapointment probably makes her feel like she's destined to be a blind Salem worshiper with no will or goals of her own like he is.

We got loads more background info on pretty much everyone except Ruby, and each has reached some kind of conclusion.
We learned about Weiss and Blake's home lives, with Weiss finally deciding to simply escape from her father's influence, while Blake got some much-needed character development between her parents and Sun.
Meanwhile Yang was shown getting back on her feet, ending with her setting out for... something.
And then we got Ren and Nora's backstory, which is now coming to a head with the fight against the Nuck. I'd say pretty much everything there qualifies as a payoff.

Hell I'm actually kind of disappointed that Ren and Nora are having this confrontation immediately, as it leaves them pretty much NOTHING to do in terms of character arcs afterwards, presuming they aren't just killed.

I think the plotline itself is a good idea... but the execution, particularly the pacing of it, is horrible.

I'd argue a bad case of telling and not showing there. There were a couple of good conversations and scenes with Taiyang to that effect, but a lot of them seemed to come down to him /saying/ what kind of growth she'd had, rather than properly showing it.

As for Whitley, I'm really hoping he's in that secret passage with their mother so we can actually meet her and get a scene of Weiss saying goodbye to her family. On superhero standards, maybe, but what does that matter? They are the main characters and the ones which mostly do the fighting. They had trouble dealing with a single Deathstalker, and nobody ever has had any trouble dealing with Beowolves no matter how spiky.
