Coming up is without a doubt my favorite run on Superman. Joe Casey managed to create a set of Superman comics that push the boundaries of what the Man of Steel is capable of. And what makes this so spectacular is that Superman manages to overcome all of his problems/adversaries without having to throw a single punch. I don't know how he managed to slip that by the DC editorial but this series is all the more amazing for it.

A hero comes to save the day.
I love the fact he sprints away.

Can't really blame her.

I'm a little iffy on Clark determining it's because of Conrad this quickly.
Unrelated to Superman, but in honor of the passing of John Hurt, I present the first three volumes of the War Doctor's Big Finish adventures. If you enjoy this series, I highly recommend you visit the Big Finish main page and support them by purchasing some of your favorite stories.

I think Clark needs to get off his high horse and let the Champion of the Oppressed do what he was supposed to do.
2spooky
I think this is one of the coolest status ailments in the DC Universe.
>>89483562
>I love the fact he sprints away.
>because Superman couldn't canonically fly yet
>>89483812
This, I got legit mad at Clark trying to hold the high ground against his literal template and how he used to behave before the War Department told DC how Superman should be.
>>89483994
I am so glad other peeps feel the same way. All the Champion of the Oppressed did was literally stand up for the oppressed and be directly confrontational with those breaking the law, regardless of their position or status (WHICH MADE HIM AWESOME!)
>>89483994
In hindsight, I could argue that Morrison's Superman in the beginning of Action Comics behaves very similarly to Champion of the Oppressed.
>>89484062
>Morrison's Superman in the beginning of Action Comics behaves very similarly to Champion of the Oppressed.
Morrison went on record that this was deliberate.
Oldest school Supes wasn't quite Stardust but he WAS Golden Age, where both he and Batman didn't mind meting out justice directly instead of just tying crooks to streetlamps.
I love that Clark and Lois have roleplay date nights from their earlier encounters. They're probably my favorite couple in the DC Universe with the second being Ollie and DInah.
>>89484105
Literally the only, ONLY good part of Kevin Smith's "Superman Lives" script did this and it was the first scene of the first act.
>>89484099
That is so freaking cool. I had no idea about that. Thanks for the info. Also I could potentially add Stardust to the storytime checklist.
>Superman Adventures
>JSA
>The Boys
>Stardust

This is actually a more tasteful version of Reeve and Kidder; where she demanded he prove he had X-Ray vision by telling her what color underwear she was wearing.

> Lois knowingly tricks a man into getting himself killed, for the crime of selling unlicensed merchandise
Also, Joe Casey bringing back a classic Bronze Age character only to kill him off in the same issue, bad show I say, bad show
>>89484221
Why is she acting surprised that he enacted the idea she gave him?
Also is Funky Flashman an established character? I don't recall ever hearing of him.
>>89484419
>Also is Funky Flashman an established character? I don't recall ever hearing of him.
He's a Stan Lee expy and money grabbing scammer created by Kirby.
>>89484299
I'm willing to argue that all Lois did was propose and idea to Flashman. Utlimately it was up on him to have critically evaluate thed consequences of such an actions and unfortunately he failed in that regard.
Also this issue and the following are my favorite part of this run by far.
>By the way, this hologram gag...very creepy.
>Good.
I know wanna see a Joe Casey Batman series.
Awesome
This townspeople dialog is an absolute treat. It's everything I want and more. Superman's dialog though sometimes comes across as....off...throughout this series. It's weird.
Love the jab at modern costumes.
Livin the dream, Dr. Camel. Livin the dream.
Absolutely fantastic page.
OH NO!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh shit!
I feel more hopefully already.
Time for the finale to the Hollow Men!
>No violence. I won't resort to that. I'm a pacifist, Dr. Welbourne.
I know this may not be for everyone but this is my favorite Supes. I'm all for having heroes that use violence, but I still love the idea of a hero having all of these incredible gifts and trying his hardest to find a better way. Like Vash the Stampede....
I know spoilering the next upcoming pages may not be necessary, but think it builds dramatic tension.
>You have to believe...
I do.
Absolutely stellar
This art is wonderful. I also loved Aucoin's art in Green Arrow
Best Superman costume reporting in.

Love it.

>>89486519
That was fantastic. Never read more than that first issue.
>>89493790
close, but that one still has those gay ass snyder-cuffs.
This one with red underwear would be GOAT.
This run was such a fucking disappointment, considering how good Casey was for Wildstorm, and a great big ideas cape writer for Superman. It only got famous because Superman announced himself to be a pacifist back then.
>>89483729
>>89483754
I kind of wonder if Joe Casey read Alvin Schwartz's (not the Scary Stories guy, but the 1940's/1950's Superman writer) book An Unlikely Prophet, where Schwartz wrote about Superman as a tulpa.
>>89484419
>Also is Funky Flashman an established character? I don't recall ever hearing of him.
He was in Kirby's Mister Miracle. It was basically Kirby doing a lampoon of Stan. In that comic Funky Flashman also had an assistant named Houseroy, who's supposed to be a parody of Roy Thomas.
>>89495842
Yea, I'm glad there's no more trunks. Before they were gone people were complaining about them, now that they're gone we get the nostalgiafags.
>>89484299
>>89484419
>>89484496
I agree, I think Lois proposed the idea, thinking that Flashman would actually stop to think about it and realize how there would be a problem trying to make money off of superheroes and supervillains. That's why she was surprised when she saw Flashman went ahead with selling supervillain merchandise.
Also I think Funky Flashman still showed up after that so Cold didn't kill him. Or at least, it was left open by Casey in case someone else wanted to use the character.
>>89486384
Kind of reminds me of parts of Morrison's Invisibles vol 2 in some ways.
>>89484084
>>89483677

>being old enough to 'not muh' for Golden Age Superman
Shouldn't you be dying in a home somewhere, gramps?
Or are you the most cancerous hipster on the planet?
Either way, neck yourself, friend.
>>89488638
Someone should crop that.
Is anyone noticing what a passive presence Superman is in all this? He's basically an observer to the main plot with some minimal interference here and there. I'm not saying he should be going around punching shit left and right, but his lack of agency is kinda jarring to me. Especially in contrast to the older Supes from the first issue.
>>89498237
I think that was kinda the point.
The writer wanted to show that superman doesn't have to solve every problem by punching harder.
>>89498189
>>89498278
I'm not saying he should punch harder. I'm saying he's barely doing anything at all.
>>89498303
I get where you're coming from. It's like the story occurs and he just happens to be there.
Also, I really hate DC's late 90s/early 2000s inhouse style.
I fucking love Joe Casey. This dude literally said Superman can defeat Galactus without a problem. No fucks were given that day.
>>89498663
>This dude literally said Superman can defeat Galactus without a problem.
I remember reading that.
Something to do with Superman letting go of his inhibitions and not holding back. Kinda like Thor going into warrior madness. He said that Superman would be pretty much unstoppable and he could have even beaten Imperiex by himself if he hadn't been shocked out of it by seeing Doomsday get his dick pushed in.Superman could totally beat up Galactus, by the way.Under the right circumstances.
>>89498313
I think that's more an artefact of the plot structure of this series and the fact that the supporting characters get more time in the spotlight than usual. Personally, I don't think it really detracts from the series, though.
>>89498730
>Superman could totally beat up Galactus, by the way. Under the right circumstances.
If by "right circumstances" you mean "starved Galactus", then yes, Superman could defeat Galactus. Other than that? Nope.
>>89498330
Really? I always liked it, to me it was a nice mix of modern realism and lush cartoonishness, like the best of the Bronze Age/Early Post-Crisis stuff.
>>89499219
>found the marvel fan

All we needed was the Sentry to do the truffle shuffle.
Gonna hijack this thread real quick and ask if this is worth a read. I've only read Morrison's Action Comics run and Superman Unchained as far as new52 Supes go. Is this continuity heavy or am I fine just jumping right into it?
>>89499219

Adventures of Superman 616-06
>>89499930
First off, this is Post Crisis Superman we're talking about here. He never fought Anti-monitor, you dumbfuck.
Second off, even the pre crisis Superman was having trouble against a **weakened** Anti-monitor and had to rely on the help from Darkseid so he can survive:
Third off, 2 Supermen and 48 most powerful beings in the Universe tried to beat Anti-monitor and couldn't even scratch him, despite using their full power.
Don't try debating topics you know nothing about.
How do most peeps feel about pacifist Supes? Good idea? Bad idea?
>I consider it a logical progression from where he started from and consider it fantastic.
>That said, I still want Pacifist Supes to experience some setbacks when trying to put that mantra into practice.

This is exactly the kind of Superman story I hate. It shouldn't be Superman's job to save every single person in the world. That's the kind of bullshit that ends in Justice Lords and evil Supermen. A Superman story should focus on the good being done, not the crushing weight of the remaining bad.

>>89515049
Two years. Probably a bit longer to fully introduce it.
>>89515105
Just two? I thought it was a modern age invention. Besides Sinestro, I mean.

Hurt was great, but his Doctor was forced in and uneeded when McGann could have served the purpose adequately.
And now because of Hurt, Eccleston is now actually the TENTH Doctor, since coming after the Eighth now makes Hurt the true Ninth, throwing off the count.
Hurt's Doctor is a shameful blemish on a 50 year legacy that didnt need to happen
>>89483812
Way to go, Clark. Force an old man to destroy something he put his heart and soul into. Just because you dont want competition.
Clark is the REAL villain here.

>>89509891
It's NOT Superman's job to save every single person in the world. But, honestly, if you knew that you could've saved someone's life if you knew it needed saving and you didn't, wouldn't you feel guilty?
A guy dies of starvation in the alley beside your house and you hear about it the next day. Wouldn't you think, "Fuck, not like I was gonna eat that can of tuna in my cabinet anyways." Superman's just that extrapolated to, well, Superman levels.
