On a technical level, it's better in V3 in every way.

But it's missing two things; firstly Monty's fights. Those are gone for good, and that's a distinct element missing.

Next is thing happening; this volume is very much a set up for later ones. Now usually this wouldn't be a problem in a show like this, but because everything is so tight for screentime, and there is going to be no increase in overall time for RWBY, there's a cap on what can be done. So right now V4 is building for a payoff we won't see for maybe years. That's pretty fucking bad.

They should have timeskipped the kids into adults and went for just a big ass overhaul. Essentially skip a lot of the boring cliche shit in this volume and slowly bring it all up as needed while they have the new-adults ween themselves into the Salem plot further.

It doesn't feel like anyone, save Qrow and the Ozluminati, are a perceived and honest threat to the supposed big bad and their henchmen. Probably could have fixed that if everyone was grown up and at Qrow-levels or atleast Winter-level.

He had plans to kill Pyrrha from the start (I mean, the name should have been a clue) so I think he wanted a lighthearted intro before things went darker. I don't think he wanted full on edgelord levels of grim derpness but considering Volume 4 has stayed away from that I have to say their keeping to the intended tone very well

If anything about Monty got to them in volume 4, it was his shoddy half assed approach to world building. You can tell by the moment of lore we've had dropped, and how much of this volume has just been set up that they're buying time to actually create a world for the plot to move forward in, rather than the array of napkin scribbles and "hey wouldn't it be neat if.." moments that Monty left them
I get that he wasn't expected what happened, and it was tragic, but I'm just left speechless by how haphazard the world building is

This mainly comes from last year's afterbuzz with Gray and Jen Brown soon after Monty's death but it does paint a picture of the level of tone he wanted.

Basically he liked game of thrones, but didn't want to go any darker than Harry Potter levels of violence grimmdark.

But if he does I want it to be him gaining consciousness again after hearing Ruby scream when the super grimm shows of and nearly kills her. He'll go full DMC in ways no fight after will ever come close to emulating, with the emotional impact made worse by him freaking out because he's not lucid enough to tell if he's trying to save Summer or Ruby and he dies cold and confused after killing the literal city-destroying super grimm.

The song that plays will be widely considered the best in the series, and the choreography and animation will be revealed to have been worked on since before production of the volume's first episode started.

That probably has more to do with them realizing very late that their short season-and-a-half conglomerate is going to inflate into three full-fledged seasons.

Then once he kicked the bucket, they're now the sole gatekeepers of an immensely popular property that they have to worldbuild and develop on the same timeframe as actually animating and pushing out episodes. That's an insane workload to take on, even for a top notch director.

You know what I think is one of the biggest problems?

They gave us all these endearing characters during Volumes 1-3 that people grew attached to, and liked even more than RWBY themselves, even if they weren't that complex or developed.

And then they left most of them behind, and the new ones we got are still horribly generic, but not at all endearing or likable.

Miles and Kerry are trying their best to get it together. Volume 4 is disappointing but it's better than sitting through volume 1 and 2. Monty wanted this show to be a Soul Eater and FFVIII fanfic with less drama and more slice of life style. Miles and Kerry have written garbage from the show but Monty thought shit like Prom and Breach was a good idea, any idea he has for the show is just filler or has a plot with no payoff.
The only thing I can't stand Miles and Kerry doing in this volume is Blake and this gods and relics shit. I did bash on how the maiden's plot before but it was good enough to build off the plot, now we have to add another fucking element that is unnecessary.

This volume is very heavy on background lore and "buildup" there are some decent fights, but we're mainly finding out more about the World and how there are new and very dangerous Grimm and the forces behind them.

Barring some massive changeup in the last few episodes, this is probably the most lore-heavy volume at the expense of "flow" and fights.

I honestly think the gods and relics plot was the original idea as told to them by Monty, and that parts of it are directly related to Ozpin and Salem. We know that the Maidens were only introduced to M&K between volumes 2 and 3, even if he put hints about them in the volume 2 opening. It kind of scares me we got so close to a volume 3 where the Maidens weren't present at all. I can't even imagine how much of the plot would have to change for that to work
