I've always liked Gorillaz' music (although Plastic Beach was a bit of a misstep and The Fall doesn't count), but I've never really kept up with its lore. I'm not sure how much I'm missing out on there.

Current lore explains the time between Plastic Beach on the beginning of the recording of the new album.

Honestly, Plastic Beach and The Fall are full of hidden slappers. Considering, Plastic Beach was a hard departure from their past work, and they worked well with change in style. I can't think that the band continuously have the same style of music through their whole career, looking back on the lore and the influences.
The Fall was made on an iPad in various airports, on tour. It also had Bobby Womack give us one of the best guest features in Gorillaz whole discography. It also got me into Bobby Womack.

It's a pretty personal album too I suppose. Being that it's basically Damon's travel diary, alongside the stripped back raw production of it, that's probably why most people don't like it too much.

For me, The Fall captures the strange excitement and melancholic feeling of traveling and looking out the window of a long ride at the scenery around you

the problem is that it didnt really feel like a gorillaz album
and I know you can say none of the gorillaz albums were the same but they had distinct qualities to them that really made you know it was them and it felt like those qualities were missing
If he decided to make this album on his own and not stick the gorillaz name on it then people would probably get a lot less shit for it
again its not bad by any means but it does have a really off feeling to it

I actually really like both Plastic Beach and The Fall, helps once you keep in mind that PB was 99% the creation of Murdoc in-universe(with 2D being the only other band member to really add anything, and even his was minimal), which is why the album seems more shallow initially, and The Fall is purely just 2D screwing around, so it's more of a 2D solo album using the Gorillaz brand(which makes sense as The Fall was originally intended to be a noncommercial album until the label forced them to charge for it)

Yeah, I get it's not really a Gorillaz album. I sorta just consider it like the G-sides/D-sides and not part of the main albums chronology. People really like comparing this to the full releases and it's not really one of those

its mostly the various sounds and genres used as well as the collaberations
I mean the first album didnt have much in terms of collab but it was still a big part in making it what it was (considering how popular clint eastwood and rock the house were)\
the fall was a lot more electronic in terms of instruments (which is kind of saying something)
its constantly using samples and electrical instruments that seems like stuff you'd download from a computer
and the albums usually have varied genres like rap rock and electronic where as the fall's songs more or less sounded similar

I like the Gorillaz music but the only time I'm ever exposed to the animations are through their videos. Where are the backstory/adventures located as the intricate character histories I see getting posted here aren't on the official website. Seems like I've missed a buttload of comics and toons.

Most of it is told through the book Rise of The Ogre and things found on the old Kong Studios site. A lot of details aren't mentioned in any videos but add to the over story. Plastic Beach specifically had a lot of details told over some podcasts Murdoc had up and not through video due to budget restrictions.

Why is Plastic Beach considered such a black sheep of their discography? It had a lot of really memorable songs on it.

People forget that Gorillaz' "face" is a fictional band with their own story, who grow and change as time goes on. An album's tone and content reflects what's going on with the band in-universe.

Probably just the price of being new. I've definitely seen criticism improve as time went on and it's not as though it was predominantly negative just a lot of debate. Had we been around for Demon Days similar conversations would probably be held. And the same thing is going to happen with the new album.

As a Gorrilaz fan with a job that requires a lot of travel, I love The Fall. Maybe knowing that it was made on tour and bouncing from town to town and airport to airport makes me feel a deeper connection to it, or the fact that I associate it with Sunset on Laguna beach, wandering around the suitcase gargoyles and creepy paintings at Denver Airport and shuffling around in the subway sytem in New York. Either way, it is now my go-to music for passing the time in new places when I travel.

It's alright but it feels like it's a song that never really gets to where it intended to go. I know that's purely on me but the actual peak of the song feels like it could've become more complex and energetic. I sorta feel the same way about every planet we reach is dead. The best part of that song is five seconds long when that fucking synth piano starts up into some Stevie Wonder tier shit. I got so hyped and boom it was over.

I actually like it the best BECAUSE it's more upbeat. I feel like Demon Days has less songs I'm not into, but I just fucking LOVE most of Plastic Beach, both the music and the visuals. I love that model of the island they made.

I never used to care for their first album all that much, but lately I've been really into it. Especially Slow Country, Sound Check, Punk, and Man Research. I've always liked the singles and Re-Hash is one of my favorites, though.

I never really liked Gorillaz. I liked Clint Eastwood and maybe a few other songs to a lesser extent, but so many of their songs sound like trash to me.

This. I got the power of Tank Girl awhile back. Apparently, Tank Girl doesn't exactly follow a coherent story line, so you can start anywhere. There's also Tank Girl Gold which came out a month or two ago, and it's pretty solid, but the artstyle is different, so you might wanna skip it.
