Probably the best book of the new canon. I didn't think a betrayal story almost devoid of the usual Star Wars fare would keep me going but it did. And I was never once disappointed in where things went. Granted, a lot of what happens on Vallt could have been cut down a tad, but it was necessary. Knowing Krennic really did work to get where he does, only to be forever blue balled by the cortosis ceiling of Sheev's aristocracy is perhaps one of the best angles I've read for an Imperial character. And his getting rused by Poggle was the best shit.

>>87771801
Simple. An officer was told to hold their fire and they had no idea their were droids in their with the DS plans. Compare that to lasers conveniently exploding right before they could hit some ship because the plot calls for that ship to survive.
>>87771833
its a special starfighter made on zonama sekot. its a custom job unlike the mass produced TIEs and Xs also TIE is optimized for weapons and has 0 shielding while obi's starfighter can even go into hyperspace with a little add on

May I remind you that because that guy did not fire, the Death Star was destroyed.
>>87771801
It's not an unforgiveable scene if you know why they said what they said. The point you seem to be missing is:
>There goes another one.
>Wait, hold your fire. There's no lifeforms aboard.
That means they've BEEN SHOOTING DOWN THE ONES WITH LIFEFORMS ABOARD.
>>87771898
>w-well Obi-Wan has the Force, the Force somehow made the lasers explode
>>87771893
its dead, it was too OP. hell with chopper jetting that far and that long you really have to wonder why do they even need ships or navigational boosters
>>87771953
But droids are as common as a toaster and don't register as life forms, but could hold the plans.
Face it, the scene is ridiculous.

>>87771933

So was RA-7, and he's still walking around.
The Jetpack will return.
>hell with chopper jetting that far and that long you really have to wonder why do they even need ships or navigational boosters
Compared to ships, what they flew was pretty short range.
The flight through Sundari in TCW was longer.
>>87772011
>you insist on LASERS EXPLODE FOR NO REASON because you have zero interest in actually sorting this out and just want an excuse to bitch.

>>87771953
so one more shot would change nothing, may as well do it just in case. its not like you have to be organic to carry info. it would be a different thing if 100s of pods had taken of and they had prioritized the ones with lifeforms but that is not what happened and even if that had happened, in the time it took them to have that conversation the gunner could have taken out 5 pods
>>87772072
>its not like you have to be organic to carry info.
THIS
>>87772011
>Shields might be stronger
Yet starfighters better designed for battle fall apart after 2 shots from droid ships. Hell Anakin shot at Obi-Wan's newer fighter in episode 3 and it's wings got blasted to pieces. So what's so logical about an old fighter surviving millions of laser bolts yet a newer model can't even take 4 or 5 shots without losing its wings? Face it, it was a shot dogfight in an ultimately shit movie.
>>87771976
It's still not implausible that Vader ordered the gunnery officer to target only lifeforms, probably working under the assumption that the plans would be too important for someone to allow them to leave their person and entrust them to a droid. It's an arrogant assumption, but Vader's contempt for droids as being tinkertoys following the demise of the CIS may very well have clouded his judgment to allow such arrogance fertile ground. The Rebels had risked a great deal just to get their hands on those plans, why the shit would they DARE just give them to a DROID and expect that to work in their favor?
Besides, the crew of Devastator must have known how capricious Vader was. If they'd worked under the initiative (against instruction) and shot down a lifeless life pod, then the plans may very well might have been on it and been vaporized, which isn't as sure a thing as recovering the plans intact just to prove the leak's been plugged. Vaporization means an unproven fate due to lack of evidence, not the sort of thing you want to go back to Tarkin or the Emperor and give a half-assed "well, we think we blew them up but it's impossible to say for certain". Not going to win any favors that way.
Also, reminder: when Vader comes to the conclusion that the plans MUST have been hidden on that pod, he orders a detachment sent down to retrieve them. As in, they won't have moved from that spot kind of "retrieve". His blind spot towards droids is so vast he didn't even consider the possibility that the plans might walk/roll away from the landing site while in possession of an automaton.
>>87772011
In that case I wonder why they didn't make more Delta 7's for clone pilots. Judging from that really crappy display of clone piloting skills in ROTS, they could have really used them.
>>87772136
>old fighter
There is no such thing as old technology in star wars. it goes in cycles and everything has already been invented, lost, rediscovered, etc. The fighter is one of such lost technologies.
>episode 3
that is not the same fighter also it was being disassembled during the fight
>>87772186
About that scene, why did those ARCs get dhot down so easliy. Don't they have tail gunners?
>>87772228
They still got overwhelmed
>>87772228
overwhelmed
>>87772228
They weren't bad, they just got overwhelmed.
>>87772181
>It's still not implausible that Vader ordered the gunnery officer to target only lifeforms
its very unlikely, its also an assumption we never see vader give any such orders. hell its more likely vader would order to target ones without lifeforms because he could use the force to sense if any of the organics had anything of the value while he can't sense what droids are thinking. it would be in keeping with people sometimes getting strange orders that turn out to have been smart moves.
>Vader's contempt for droids
wut? vader loved droids, he only gets pissed when they try to replace him with one or treat him like one.
>why the shit would they DARE just give them to a DROID and expect that to work in their favor?
why would not they? droids are relentless and would have as much of a chance as anyone to make it in a desert with no resources. all you need to do is pick a model that is not c3pio
>Not going to win any favors that way
"we got nothing" is also not going to win any favors. imitative is only punishable when it detracts from the order that was given. as you said there would be no way of knowing thus know way to punish anyone.
Why do threads devolve into nitpicking so much?
ANd why is it usually the prequels?
Why is it never
>why did those Star Destroyers crash into each other in ESB, that's stupid as fuck
>how did attaching himself to the hull stop them from detecting the Falcon?
>why didn't Han detect the Slave 1 following them, when it was like 5 feet behind them in the garbage dump?
>why does the timeframe of ESB make no sense in regards to how long Luke was on Dagobah, and how Han traveled to different systems so quickly/without a hyperdrive
>>87772228
We could have focused a little bit on the ACRs as they bravely sacrificed themselves for their two Jedi commanders. Kind of like the DS trench run where X-Wing pilots gave their lives for Red Leader and Luke to take the shot.
But nah, let's have the robots kill them all with no effort and then show the kids a funny little scene full of cartoon buzz droid shenanigans.
Just thinking about it makes me hate ROTS's dogfight more than AOTC's dogfight, and that's saying something.
>>87772324
To add: I don't even care about the answers to those.
But the prequels get ragged on for too much that the OT has in spades as well.

Agreeing with this. I felt Luceno stumbled a bit with Tarkin, it was a good book but probably needed another draft or at least a trim of some of the excess history lessons. Luceno's back in form here, though.
Also I get the feeling he'd really like to do a Dooku novel.

>>87773164

>>87773309
I never saw ESB as terribly paced. It's running multiple story threads and switches between them enough to keep either from becoming boring. For a middle story it is arguably padding things out but did so in an interesting way, hit people with a twist, and left the clamoring for more.
As a stand alone it might be worse off, but as a middle chapter it does its job admirably. Where the pacing actually suffers is meta-wise. Their attempt to explain how Luke could have learned all he did while his friends are dicking around in a giant worm. In Han and Leia's story it seems like only hours have passed. In Luke's it is as if days or even weeks have passed. And Pablo has offered us a solution to that, for whatever it is worth.
>>87773531
How is Dooku better if he's a bland villain and the duel itself was nothing but them literally swinging their lightsabers in the screen? Also, Yoda fighting with the lightsaber was the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen.

By that, I meant that any discussion, especially with things as they are now, would sound like nothing more than contradictory rhetoric. Showing how contrarian one side can be just because they can, without any leanings toward an actual argument or proper debate.

The only other comics I've read apart from Star Wars was the Dark Horse Avatar the Last Airbender story arcs, So I can't really comment on the soul of a comic
>>87776166
I'm talking about the writer, Charles Soule. He's a fucking hack.
>>87776022
Yeah, I have been enjoying other things aabout the Marvel comics. I think they've handled quite a few established characters pretty well like Lando and Kanan. But what I enjoy the most about them is how well they blend in with all eras of Star Wars and other canon material. I didn't even think I'd see the Carrion Spike again
>>87771833
>How can shields survive so many shots?
Because the Slave's primary cannons are blaster cannons not laser. If they were laser cannons, Obi-Wan would've been in trouble. You can tell they were blasters by their rate of fire. Blaster cannons can be fired automatically like a machine gun while laser cannons are much slower for fire. This applies to turbolasers too. See the Droid Starfighter/Vulture Droid in TPM, they fire rapidly as well but not as damaging.

When someone says they like the prequel characters because they had "no preconceived notions" of what they're like, it usually means they forgot everything said in the OT and just go with it because we got that totally awesome beginning in ROTS or that amazing duel in TPM.
>>87776142
>anakin didnt blow up the command ship in episode 1
>anakin didnt fly the car in episode 2
>anakin didnt fly in the intro battle in episode 3
Anon I said "cool pilot stuff" not accidental shenanigans, car driving, and basic flying. How is he a good pilot? Has he ever shot down any fighters? Does he ever outmanuever a fighter? Does he save a squadmate from an enemy fighter? Nah he just shoots at his friend, ram his ship, and crash land. What an ace....

Oh right. I did enjoy Lando, but that was mostly the art and I wasn't much of a fan of the homo panthermen. I don't like Poe Dameron that much, it's pretty bland in story, the writing is bland and the art aint great, but I do like agent Terex. He's the only thing enjoyable about it.Obi Wan and Anakin wasn't that great. The writing was again bland and there wasn't much too it. I did enjoy the scenes Anakin had with Obi Wan though. I don't find his stuff as bad as Princess Leia, Chewbacca or Chuck Wendig's TFA adaptation. Still it's like 5 minutes out of my life and I'm downloading it online. It's not like I'm giving him money
>>87776385
Really? I thought it was the overuse of CGI that would be weakest. Well, you can't argue against it because it's true. Luke demonstrated his skills as a competent pilot. Anakin doesn't, clone troopers die so he can fly a straight line towards the ship of that skeleton robot.

When did I say the OT didn't have childish scenes? Why even bring up the OT? The scene we are discussing does not fit with what's going on in the background. It's like a tease. It shows us ship to ship combat, something that can top ANH or ROTJ's dogfight sequences, but it literally gives us the opposite. The clones get shot down easily and we don't get any dogfighting whatsoever, just robot shenanigans.

The only memorable scene I remember in TCW was the Battle of Malastare, but that's only because that was the first appearance of the ARC-170 in the show.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTZFTH7t0-8
Even then, they didn't do anything in the scene besides a strafing run. The Torrent was showcased more in the series than the ARC-170.
They only show up in eleven episodes ("The Zillo Beast","ARC Troopers", "Nightsisters","Citadel Rescue","Mercy Mission","Nomad Droids", "Darkness on Umbara","A Necessary Bond","The Jedi Who Knew Too Much","The Unknown", and "The Bad Batch") and many of them don't even feature moderate air/space combat. The episodes that do, use the Headhunter, Y-Wing and Torrent.

Kinda sad that SW books and comics have more respect for the art of dogfighting than the movies and cartoons.

And isn't Thrawn basically the exception that proves the rule?
>>87780144
That was the case in Legends, where Thrawn getting to the rank of Grand Admiral was considered unheard of.
But now it would be weird to have that when the second in command of the Empire and basically the guy that actually runs it is also an alien.
>>87780170
Those padawan robes are similar to Anakin's. Is that significant or just a coincidence?
>>87780144
If any anyone is useful to the emperor he will use them, because the emperor and by extension the empire is not human supremacist, they are imperial supremacist. the fact most of them are human has nothing to do with their politics. hell there's even discrimination between humans because not all humans are technically the same race in star wars, so to be human supremacist would be ridiculous because they vary wildly

The ARC-170 can also serve as a bomber, it even has a tail gunner position like the Y-Wing and you can't really say its due to size because the Clone Z-95 is longer lengthwise and has a wingspan just as long as the ARC.
The other Republic fighters get shown off accomplishing a lot more with the only exception being the V-Wing.

>>87781136

Star Wars has never been filmed like that, even when Lucas made the prequels and new he had 3 movies to work with he never made it seem like they were incomplete films

ANH, ESB, and ROTJ have this theme. ROTS is partially faithful to these themes so that IS most of the saga, retard.

Nobody is denying it was just a soft reboot, but it's a decent film nonetheless. Things like Poe, Finn, and ESPECIALLY Kylo Ren deserve credit.
Also, if a film can kill of Han Solo without causing the same amount of outrage Jar Jar's very existence did, then I think that deserves credit too.

>>87781435
Poe wasn't even in most of the movie, and Kylo Ren is a joke. Everyone knew Han's days were numbered, Ford thought the character should have died in ROTJ.

Ford's opinion on the character does not influence my own. Han had nothing substantial going for him that his death is tripe and meaningless, there is nothing tragic about it. I said nothing about knowing his fate prior to the film.
>Ren is better than all the prequel villains.
That doesn't make him a good character, regardless of comparison.
>>87781735
Ren went bad because he was seduced by the Supreme Leader (I refuse to call him Snoke btw) and became obsessed with Vader. It's not that daddy Solo was incompetent, it's that there was nothing he could do. Same with Luke. The same shit also happened in the prequels with Anakin's turn, only in that case it seriously felt like it was due to incompetence because we actually see them being scumbags to Anakin. Also, unlike the entire Jedi Council, Han was a cool guy. Plus, Driver gave a damn good performance.
>>87781781
>Han had nothing substantial going for him that his death is tripe and meaningless, there is nothing tragic about it
Disagreed. Han had a chance to bring his son back but got killed instead. It's tragic because it's his son who he really thought was going to come home with him.
>That doesn't make him a good character, regardless of comparison.
But he is a good character. Much different from previous villains and far more interesting too.

What on Earth are you talking about, "there was nothing he could do"? We haven't even seen how any of this went, I'm just going by what we were told in the movie. Kylo was seduced by Snoke, and somehow his parents and Jedi master couldn't do ANYTHING to avoid this? Sounds like serious incompetence to me.
>The same shit also happened in the prequels with Anakin's turn, only in that case it seriously felt like it was due to incompetence because we actually see them being scumbags to Anakin
Yes, ironically making it a more serious case for a moving tragedy, since the Jedi Order circa that era was supposed to be stagnant and decadent.
>Also, unlike the entire Jedi Council, Han was a cool guy. Plus, Driver gave a damn good performance.

Anon, think of his obsession like drugs. Kids will always find a way to get some no matter what parents do.
>Sounds like serious incompetence to me.
But like you said, we haven't seen how things went. You'll just have to wait judging by what you said.
>Yes, ironically making it a more serious case for a moving tragedy
Too bad it wasn't tragic. The music during that scene was perfect too but, oh well.
>What does any of this have to do with anything
You see, anon, when you like a character, it makes their death very sad. Let me explain it better. Han, who was really cool in the OT and learned to have a heart became our hero. When he was killed by his beloved son, it was sad. Now what about the Jedi? They acted mean and nasty to poor Anakin. When Anakin got the respect he deserved from Sheev, he killed all the Jedi. The deaths did not feel sad because the Jedi were all bullies.
>>87782100
>Just because the trope was family does not give any more emotional weight to the situation.
It does in this case because Han was not the kind of guy to fall for shit like love. But now he's old and scarred. Love was the very thing that caused his death. Prequels tried the same thing with love making Anakin go evil which was oozing with potential buy wasn't all that great to be honest.
>You keep saying that because he's different, Kylo Ren must be a good character. That's no criteria for well written characterization.
But he was well written. The actor was fantastic, he had tantrums, he was insecure, he spoke to himself and hallucinated about his grandfather, I especially fucking love that one little thing where he refers to Vader as "grandfather" but refers to his father as "Han Solo".
>>87782189
Yeah, did anyone else sympathize more with Sheev than Windu here? I would've done the same as Anakin.
>>87782324
>It does in this case because Han was not the kind of guy to fall for shit like love.
Yes he was, he already went through his character arc in ANH from being the selfish smuggler to a ally, and through ESB to ROTJ transforming into a good friend.
>But he was well written. The actor was fantastic, he had tantrums, he was insecure, he spoke to himself and hallucinated about his grandfather, I especially fucking love that one little thing where he refers to Vader as "grandfather" but refers to his father as "Han Solo".
Kylo's tantrums are only one example of his issues. problem. He's 30 years old, and is acting like a teenager. Like Poe, he only has one character type - Conflicted™. He's not taken seriously in the film by his forces, or his opponents. His first scene is Poe - Ace Pilot™mocking him. He is the most skilled and powerful combatant, and yet I'm supposed to be sad that Han, a man who already cheated his death, is killed by his worthless son?
>>87781712

>>87782560
>Yes he was, he already went through his character arc
Yes, but he was never put into a situation with a loved one that could end in violence. Also, when I said "was" I was mostly referring to ANH. The guy shot first and asked questions never. In this case, he immediately wanted to talk first.
>Kylo's tantrums are only one example of his issues. problem. He's 30 years old, and is acting like a teenager.
Isn't that a plus? He's supposed to be mentally unsound. I think it's perfect.
>He's not taken seriously in the film by his forces, or his opponents.
At first sight, Rey shot at him while running away in fear. Han tried to get him to come back. Finn was terrified of him at first but he himself developed into someone who was brave enough to fight his boss. The only one who talked back to him was Poe, but that's who he is, a smartass who isn't afraid to die. As for Hux, that's also his character, a superior with authority over him. Like Tarkin 2.0 pretty much.

Again, he stopped being that person after the first movie, there is no revelation here.
>Isn't that a plus? He's supposed to be mentally unsound. I think it's perfect.
No. He's written to be a joke. There's other ways of writing internal conflict and not be has ridiculous as Kylo Ren's. He can be angry, but the the entire film works against him and compromises any serviceable qualities of him as a person and an antagonist.
By the end of the film, in both dialogue and action, Kylo not only got the short end of the stick, he had no stick.
What you seem to miss is that with all the characters in TFA were just poor archetypes needed to fill slots in an uninspired plot. They were modified during the creative process, but their characters were left wanting with the attributes that should have already been in place.
>>87771760
They're flak, just like the majority of laser shots in the movies. It's like complaining the AT-ATs on Hoth sometimes just shoot lasers that evaporate in mid-air. Go back and check the effects, it's the same thing. They even call it flak in the novelization.
>>87783114
>Again, he stopped being that person after the first movie, there is no revelation here.
The revelation is the development he made was the cause of his death, anon. Love was the death of a man who started out a tough smartass.
>No. He's written to be a joke. There's other ways of writing internal conflict and not be has ridiculous as Kylo Ren's.
But Ren wasn't ridiculous. He had mental issues which justifies his tantrums and rants. That's his character. Yes there are ways to write a conflicted character, but the way Ren was done was great.
>He can be angry, but the the entire film works against him and compromises any serviceable qualities of him as a person and an antagonist.
How? Just because one character can act like a smartass to his face doesn't mean he can't be a serious threat. Tarkin and Leia treated Vader like a dog, that didn't make Vader less villainous.
>characters in TFA were just poor archetypes
The OT was nothing but cookie cutter archetypes. That didn't make it less fun. Anon, I'm not really going to convince you otherwise, but I can't see how these complaints are valid. You're saying "oh Ren is bad because l, eh, I didn't like his tantrums". That's fine, but there's nothing wrong with his tantrums because that's how he was written. He's insane. I feel like you wanted someone like post-ESB Vader probably. But I think the new guy we got is fantastic.
