In pre-Disney canon (or more specifically, pre-TCW since it was the show that retconned their species) they were different species. Maul was a regular Zabrak and Ventress was Rattataki.

TCW made them both Dathomirian, which is apparently a hybrid of humans and Zabraks. The males end up looking more Zabrak-ish with odd skin patterns (which they enhance with tattoos) and the females look like chalky humans. So yeah, they're the same race now.

They may or may not still exist. The reason for the retcon was to connect Ventress to the Nightsisters- in the EU she had nothing to do with them (and despite popular belief, TCW wasn't the reason the Nightsisters started looking pale and chalky- the EU was actually already doing that as early as 1999). Her backstory still involves growing up on the planet Rattatak, but they haven't shown if there's any native races there.
