Does racebending really matter? Only a few purists grumbled about the black Nick Fury. Why is a black MJ any worse? It's true that the only defining trait the character has is red hair...in that case, why do we want MJ in anything to start with?

In this case no. As long as it doesn't change the characters origin/motives or change ruin an otherwise great concept.

Example being Fantastic 4. Black Johnny storm isn't really a problem on its own. It doesn't change his character. What it does do is that it lets a studio put a black guy on the poster and completely ignore the minority story of Ben Grimm. They made ben grimm into boring orange hulk so they could have a black guy.
