It's a good show, although the first few episodes are admittedly really, REALLY weak. Most people will like at least one of them, but on the whole they're pretty eh. It's generally advised to watch the first 26 episodes before passing full judgement though, as starting at around episode 8 and again at 12 the quality really starts to pick up, and episodes 25/26 are a big moment in the series overall. If you don't like it by then it's probably not for you.

Also, while tumblr has attached itself to the show, the actual themes within it are either subtle or largely imagined. It never really feels like pandering and the message doesn't feel overly political at any point.

I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, but keep in mind that the early episodes are pretty weak. It takes a while for the show to find its footing. The tone changes pretty dramatically from first season to second season a well, going from episodic adventures focusing on magical elements, to arc based stories with a much heavier emphasis on sci-fi.

I'll say what I said in another thread yesterday; outside of exposure to the most autistic portion of the show's fanbase, I didn't really know anything other than it's a widely praised cartoon.
I recently had a lot of free time and felt like watching cartoons, so I gave it a go.
Initially, I wasn't engrossed so I had it as background noise, but maybe 12-15 episodes in I actually started paying attention, and then I binged through it over 3-4 days this past week and I'm kind of super bummed I have to wait for more.
It's got surprisingly good writing and character development for a kid's show, and while there's the occasional subtext, most of the progressive-ness is internet people trying to connect unrelated dots and draw a picture that isn't there but that they want to see.
So I'd say give it a go if you're interested, don't expect it to knock your socks off right away, and if it's not for you don't worry about it.

Sounds perfect for you. Tumblr loves the show, but the show is definitely not Tumblr, it just contains hints of progressive themes. Even as a dedicated fan I can see how people forget or don't even realize that it's a progressive show. When it does evoke these themes it's very natural.

Gem Empire is like some weird mashup of Nids and Necrons.

They suck all the life out of the planet, and they never really die.

Gem Empire lost hundreds of thousands to millions of Gems in the war against Rose. The War lasted a thousand years at least. Ending when the Diamonds used their own version of Exterminatus.

Gems have FTL that doesn't involved going through literal hell. Once established they set up their own version of the Webway. Allowing for rapid deployment and reinforcement.

Gems are effectively immortal and require no sleep/food/drink/air. Gem powers are equal to psyker, but with out the risk of daemons.

Does Zuke only like Peri as much as she does because she can easily self-insert as her?

Keep in mind that Gems require a specific level of life for a planet to be a viable colony, and that Earth is extremely rich in quartz. The Earth colony was clearly intended for soldier production; without soldiers, it would be much more difficult to claim new worlds to provide more resources.

Rose started her rebellion at a time when Homeworld was weakened. They didn't possess enough Quartzes to curb stomp her like they normally would have, and she was able to heal her smaller forces to keep the fighting going. The war was just too expensive for Homeworld to continue.
