It's not that the characters are fat. It's that only Opal, Rainbow, Lapis and Peridot have "conventionally attractive" body types while the rest are either obese, rail-thin or have some sort of impossible waist-to-hip ratio.

The show definitely promotes fat acceptance with Steven and Amethyst, but I still like it because none of this really is painted as an important issue in the show, it's just how they look. I definitely don't want to watch things like capeshit where there are only four body types: woman, skinny man, man, and big man.

Because everyone working on it is a special snowflake fishing for praise because they're "so progressive" and "socially conscious".

To begin with, the main plot is about a group of misfits (lower cast, born with disabilities, forbiden "gay" couple, midgets, etc) fighting against a tiranic authority government, and that's basicaly how SJW see themselves.

If we assume the main source of gem resources where converting enemies, which is already hard because well, you are not supposed to hang out with your enemy in war, it's also to be expected to have the Homeworld command to take measures towards minimizing the possibility of communication between both sides if not outright stopping them. So if they depended only on it they would barely get new members.

In addition, we don't know to what extent the rebellion operated like an army or a guerrilla. The strawberry fields suggest the later stages of the conflict to be full scale war, sufficient escalation for Homeworld to consider a maximum threat (remember what Jasper said).

If we assume nobody knew the diamonds could produce superweapons on the level of the corruption song ("conventional" gem superweapons not being world encompassing) in what was by that time a full scale war it would be logical to implement the breaking point. By that point the scales were "kill or be killed", Bismuth's delusions of destroying the gem hegemony notwithstanding. It would be a good enough shot to prove you were strong enough to curbstomp the enemy so the hegemony would just give up and leave you alone.

You know, I kind of like how the show handles the diversity of its characters. In other shows it would feel forced in some way, but it seems to really work with SU, mostly because of the fact that they are aliens. That gives it a kind of veil that doesn't outright scream in your face that, "Hey!...

It's pretty obvious that these characters are these things, but they also aren't at the same time. If you want to get really technical, none of the gems are actually female, and Garnet isn't black, but because of the similarities we see between these characters and the human traits they have, we make the connect that it must be symbolism (which it is, Sugar basically confirmed this at SDCC).

I could go on, but I shouldn't sperg out too hard over this. Overall the show is lite-SJW and handled pretty well. When I first started watching it I was preparing myself for a SJW cringefest, but was pleasantly surprised.

So is the only way to not have your thing be accused of "forced divsersity" and "SJW" is to make every main character a straight white male?

Eh... this has a lot more to do with the artists' consistent inconsistency staying on model. Steven's design is intentionally tubby. It's less severe when he's drawn older but both of his older designs in Too Many Birthdays and Steven's Birthday were still on the chunkier side. Bara Steven will never be real. ;_;

She doesn't really have any self-esteem issues until Sardonyx tells her to try and 'find what she's good at; by forcing her into trials suited to Garnet and Pearl's strengths (agility and strength). Amethyst and Steven are about Defense and Flexibility in battle. And just like Smoky's source material, she immediately gets down on herself when she begins to believe that she's letting Sardonyx down.

Low Self-Esteem isn't something Smoky has all the time, but it crops up when she's under pressure to perform and can't.

The art is too inconsistent to really tell who is an actual fatty in this show.

And Steven is always made to feel he is not Rose and they need him to be Rose.
So of course Smoky is extremely quick to feel incapable, no matter their effective performance. Sardonyx was just going about it wrong, made herself the standard of all success and put Smoky on the spot.

There are some issues with the episode order. A few episodes from late S1 were aired in S2, but that doesn't really matter.

The real problem is that a certain set of episodes ended up in the wrong order on some streaming sites (incl. amazon and itunes), spoiling the season 1B finale. Make sure when you get to that point (about 40-50 episodes in), to watch these in the correct order.
