Best season so far.

Early season 1 is hard to go back to, and yeah, the Lapis arc, and the finale were both fantastic, but that was mostly because they were contrasting against the mundane regular episodes.

Season 2 bunglefucked The Cluster, and the first half of Peridot's redemption was pretty weak.

As much as I don't like Beach City Drift or The New Lars, every other episode has been fucking tight.

Yes, they wanted to exploit Earth to further their own purposes, but we do that even to our own species.

Ethically, the issue is complicated: are gems intrinsically morally bound to consider humans their equals because we think and talk? We live brief lives, are violent and very, very frail. Death is our constant companion, even if we work very hard to keep ourselves alive - we have to take in fuel daily, we need to breathe on a second-to-second basis, all in all we are a very stunted form of life compared to them.

What would the ethical viewpoint be if the gems decided to gradually alter Earth into a colony? It would not destroy humanity overnight, population numbers would just gradually drop as resources wind down. Crops would fail, game would become more and more scarce and population numbers would shrink until, one day, long before Earth is hollowed out, the last human would simply up and die.

Would that really be such a great loss to the universe?

To me it seems Rose didn't have many choices. There was a war going on. Bismuth was advocating the use of a weapon which was completely unacceptable to her. The "as bad as they are" really does apply here, because who were they really fighting against? Was Centi/Nephrite evil? But Bismuth would have killed her.

(Apropos of which: was bubbling invented after this? Bubbling is as effective as shattering when it comes to taking an opponent out of the fight).

Rose had to remove Bismuth. She would have critically skewed the rebellion: some gems might have followed her, and if they didn't, Bismuth would undoubtedly have struck out on her own, which would demoralize the troops more than her disappearance did - and possibly even become an enemy herself.
Eventually Rose could have brought her out (although she never did... hmmm).

In any case, Bismuth revealed herself as dangerous. She certainly tried to kill Steven, who she believed to be Rose in disguise (although she must have doubted that idea, at least).

It was a muddled issue. Rose took the option that did least damage: bubble a single gem.

That is not evil, let alone "fucking evil". Corrupting millions of gems was a "fucking evil" act.

You assume they would all be rational. The thing is, the rebellion is Rose's responsibility. She started it. And she didn't "throw Bismuth in jail as soon as she started a question", she did it when Bismuth wanted to start to kill their opponents. A right to information? ...Hard to argue against, but what would it have led to? Division. Some gems would have insisted she would be unbubbled. Others, that she would be banished. Others would agree with her. Any scenario would weaken their position and increase the odds of losing everything. Even Bismuth's life.
In this scenario, Bismuth "dies a hero's death" while still surviving, some day, to be free.

Rose didn't think she was very good, by the way. So maybe she would agree with you. Sometimes, there are no good choices to be made.
