They said that they're treating him like Vader in media. Their rules for Vader in nucanon are 1: that he can't die before Ep6 (I assume for Thrawn this means that his death has to be impactful and not just 'whoops, Sabine threw a grenade at his dick and he died lol'), and 2: he cannot ever appear to be weak. I assume he'll live since in Rebels the Rebellion is too small for them to realistically kill Thrawn without having him look weak as fuck for getting killed by a few random jack offs.

>Yoda

You know... Yoda is one of those things that'd usually be best kept mysterious and as is, but honestly, I find myself greatly intrigued by the idea of a Yoda movie. It probably wouldn't be of him in his younger days as even he would see that as pointless exposition considering the hundreds and hundreds of years to explore. Probably not the Clone Wars as that'd just be ground that wasn't covered in the show. Maybe his time on Dagobah? A giant retro and introspective all at the same time? Knowing his history with serials, Westerns and Japanese classics, I wouldn't mind him doing an Obi-Wan film on Tatooine either.

Or maybe just something purely about the Force.

If that turned into a slow-burner with him facing down Maul for a final time, I'd dig it. Or just Obi-Wan ruminating on the nature of the Jedi, fall of the Republic, etc. would be cool too.

I'll admit that I'm at a loss for a Yoda movie. Aside from wanting to see something about young Yoda, I'm not sure what that would be.

So will rouge one be shit? I can't tell.
>>
>>85164934
And the second time it was used differently. The Empire was apparently doubling down on the idea of a terror weapon but it was just a lure for the Rebellion to wipe them out and claim Luke Skywalker.

Starkiller was used the exact same way as the original Death Star, only they tried to make it "bigger, badder, bolder". Han scoffing at the added size was the perfect reaction.

>"Children love power, because children are the powerless"

Anakin's arc throughout the movies (even without The Clone Wars) suddenly has a bit more weight to it, even if the execution still feels kind of hurried within RotS. Anakin did always display a fascination with power even as far back as TPM, what with his remarking that he dreamt that he was a Jedi who returned to Tatooine and freed all the slaves, as well as his promising to his mother that he would come back and free her before going off with Qui-Gon. It's not clearly stated but the implication is definitely there. Only it's rooted in childish ambition. This then develops into what we see of him in AotC where his viewpoint has been molded and shaped by his training and some tutelage from Palpatine - his open appreciation for tight fisted authority despite being subject to such himself with the Jedi; the beginnings of the obsessions with greater power following the death of his mother.

This all culminates in RotS when he faces another dilemma arguably even greater than his mother's in the previous film - only this time, someone in the form of Palpatine is around to stoke Anakin's infatuation with greater power by claiming that he himself has the power to avert Anakin's foretold disaster.

Yeah, in a universe where genetic alteration is canon, couldn't they just made him get one of those shots and had him be a regular (but intimidating) looking dude with something to cover up the breathing mechanism. I mean, I know Sheev didn't want him to actually have a good suit, but did Anakin rally need to be trapped in a black Samurai cosplay? Even when he's just doing Empire business deals? Such a lame suit. I don't even know why that design was approved by George in the first place. There's nothing intimidating about some nutjob limping around in black all the time. But they are. If Dooku found out he was being manipulated by Sheev and killed him, he would have defeated the Republic with his superior military. The only reason it seemed like the Republic was winning before is because Sheev was pulling the strings for both sides. Dooku would have been less predictable and thus able to defeat the Republic and secure a new future for the Galaxy. After that, he could just hire a couple assassins to take out the corrupt business leaders that would exploit their victory in the war. None of this Empire and Rebels shit the galaxy had to deal with.
>>
>>85170082
But didn't the Confederacy of Independent Systems simply want their independence from the Republic?
>>
>>85170145
That's true, but the Republic wouldn't have none o' that. Maybe Dooku could have come to split the galaxy with the Republic, but that could lead to uprising and a star wars version of the cold war.

The only thing about it is that Rey is about as boring as Luke was, where the real pull of the original trilogy was the rest of the cast. Han, Chewie, Vader, were all more vastly interesting than Luke from a character standpoint. I always felt like he was a viewpoint character anyway.

He was endearing when he had his moments of naivety, but I thought he was actually pretty interesting in RotJ. I like how you can really see his progression throughout the series and I hope we get something similar with either Daisy or Fin, where they have drastically changed from the start of their journeys

We've gotten very little information on it and most of what we do have is stuff that's either been outright debunked or comes from unreliable sources. So we basically know nothing right now.

>and we now know that they're probably true based on having the entire plot of episode 7 nearly a year before the film was complete.
If you're talking about MSW, they didn't have anywhere near an entire plot outline until last summer.
>>
>>85171334
>>85171445
That's fair. I kinda hope they go the Anakin route and make her overconfident in her abilities to the point where it becomes a flaw. Then she can get pushed down a peg when she realizes there's more to being a Jedi than force tricks or something. Maybe I'm just talking out my ass, but I really think that's the only way to make her character imperfect. That, and get over her dependence on others in her life. I'd have to watch the movie again just to see if there's anything else about her character that she could improve
>>
>>85171445
A literal direct sequel to a direct sequel? As much as I respect Rian Johnson as a filmmaker I feel this just kills any sense of a span of time. But I guess it's better this way, to portray the rise and fall of the First Order as a small, devastating moment in time compared to the timeline of the Prequels and Originals which took place over years.
>>
>>85171646
>Actually, on the topic, what as the old EU's story for R5?
I remember two separate stories for him: he either intentionally blew his own motivator because he sympathized with Artoo and Threepio and didn't want them to be split up, or Artoo intentionally sabotaged him so that they'd be forced to buy him instead. I can't remember which of the two was the "true" story.
>>
>>85171704

nah, they had the basic outline of the plot before then plus dropped ideas that later showed in concept art.
>>
>>85171738
No, they didn't. They were still talking about ancient Sith tombs and Luke being evil a year before the movie. They had fragments that turned out to match up but an actual plot outline didn't come around until really late in the rumor cycle.
>>
>>85171334
Not sure what you mean by "powerful" here, but let me offer up a few things:
Rey was already a skilled fighter well before she held a lightsaber, sure, but controlling and using the force is much more than just combat. Rey might have been able to get away with a handful of things in TFA, but the Force is still a new and intimidating thing for her. She could easily slip to the Dark Side if she's not careful, because she doesn't have the mental fortitude and training.
Meanwhile, it's been directly implied that Luke is currently powerful enough to take on the entire First Order -and win- if his heart was in it. And Snoke would be fine if the map leading to him was destroyed by some accident if it meant never seeing him again. We haven't seen first hand of what Luke was up to between VI and VII.

>>85171737
I was talking more about what happened after, if he died in the crawler or made it out somehow.
>>
>>85171813

no, they weren't. you're confusing speculation based off the concept art they got with actual spoilers.
>>

Actually it sure as hell is. What in that scene makes you think that she's doing this from cool, competent, expertly manipulated movements at the controls? What part of her performance or that entire scene was supposed to make you think, "Phew, this is so non-tense because she's doing everything great!"

when i saw ANH in the 90s on tv, it made sense. luke was able to make the proton torpedo enter the chute through obi-wan's guidance by letting go, literally, and trusting in the force.

rey never has this moment even though it could have been easily inserted in the film.
>>
i'm surprised that kanan is implied to be useless until he learns force-sight from the bendu creature. it seemed like he had the right idea of how to adapt when he fought maul.

>>
>>85174638

Luke does have his moments, they just tend to happen between the first and second film, and with prompting from Obi-Wan.

He's already an ace fighter pilot, despite flying the equivalent of a cropduster, without even the benefit of sims. Managing to block every bolt from the training remote on his second attempt. Said grapnel usage, and ability to kill Stormtroopers with no emotional response to fucking murdering people. Landing the Deathstar killing missiles with only the vague suggestion to 'use the Force, Luke'.

We really should use TESB too, at least up until he reaches Yoda. He still hasn't had a teacher yet. Still, he again 'uses the Force, Luke' and manages to pull his lightsaber to his hand without anyone so much as suggesting telekinesis is a thing yet. I would even argue his one-man assault on an AT-AT rivals anything Rey did, even if it was mostly mundane... because there is nothing mundane about soloing a AT-AT.

I do love the battledroids. They're programmed with an innate value for their own lives, apparently so the property won't damage itself, but are bound by their programming to often do things that are suicidal at best leaving them entirely morose, or just resigned to their horrible fate.

I do like that at least a portion of them have survived all the way into the OT, having attained freedom from their control mechanism.

This is why I actually like battle droid humor: it's silly at first but the more you think about it the darker it is.
>>
>>85175716
I like that they also have moments where they don't quite grasp the severity of what they're dealing with. In the TCW movie one of the few scenes that made me laugh had a battle droid leaning over a cliff to get a better look at the Republic forces... he falls off, screaming to his death and his commander promptly shouts "GET BACK HERE, SERGEANT!"

Besides, he hasn't been mindwiped since Leia acquired him. In Bloodline he still had full memories of his time in the Rebellion.

Given he was built by Anakin, and of course it had to fit with the OT where he didn't know the events of the Prequels, mind wiping him was to protect them all, including him. If he was ever discovered he couldn't reveal anything in his memories.

And yet everyone, EVERYONE, forgets to routinely mindwipe their Astromechs.

>>
>>85174427
>she picks up the force pretty quickly despite not accepting it after getting captured
Actually she only accepted it because she was captured. We saw her use it consciously all of twice since resisting Kylo Ren's mind probe was incidental. We saw her, after several attempts, finally mind trick a trooper but afterward she didn't rely on the trick to make it past any other guards. And then when after she's run from Kylo Ren for most of their fight and her back is to a cliff she trusts in it enough to finally put up a decent, but not totally competent and hardly expert fight. She never even did any Force jumps.

Even her pulling the saber it wasn't clear she did it on purpose or if it was instinctive because the Force was guiding her again.

I don't know why people act like she's just going to hand Luke his saber and then say, "Well I'm already practically a Jedi Master, have fun in Ireland because I'm off to save the galaxy" then she flies off like Neo from the Matrix and enters hyperspace with just her astute and undeniable mastery of the Force.

Her and Ben switching roles in the story or something might not entirely be out of the question in the future depending on what developments occur in the next couple movies, but it's doubtful

>Not even Rey, who assumed Luke a myth, or Finn, whose mission it was to assist in hunting him down, asked naturally curious questions regarding Luke - what he was like, what really made him so important, etc

This movie could have rebuilt Luke as a whole new character for when we'd see him in VIII, given the idea that sold JJ on making it in the first place was "who is Luke Skywalker?" but he got so fucking obsessed in just recreating A New Hope because it was so DELIGHTFUL

Mark Hamill's idea of where he thought Luke was going to be introduced into the story was amazing and they should have done it. I don't know why, but I absolutely love that he hated the movie
>>
MH is cool. He said TFA was like Transformers.
>>
>>85185734
>“Where I thought I came in, I thought I came in when the lightsaber flies off [in the snow],” Hamill said. He then reacted surprised that it wasn’t him. “What? Rey caught it? She hasn’t even finished her training!”

It'd be kind of hard to justify, but it would have been so much better because it'd have made much more sense. The Force is no doubt strong with Rey, but as with Anakin, you can't actually make use of the powers you have without actual training in how to feel and touch it first.
>>
>>85185877
>Of course, he then joked that Luke didn’t finish his training either, instead going off to save his friends. Sort of like Rey does to defend and avenge Finn and Han.

Yeah but the difference is that Luke HAD training. Enough that he was justifiably able to consciously make use of his power. Simply opening yourself up to the Force doesn't cut it. That's exactly what Luke did against the training remotes and in the Death Star, but those were much more rudimentary techniques compared to the Mind Trick and telekinesis.

Episode 3 was the first Star Wars film I watched back when it was in the cinema. After some time I bought the OT then played the first Lego Star Wars game then finally got around to watching Episode 1 and 2 way later on. I was confused as fuck to why Episode 4-6 was already out and everything... why did no one educate me?

Out of curiosity, what was the part of that post that made you think it was serious? The threat to have congress arrest Lucas? The filename? The "humorously" edited video? Was it too subtle?

At most with that scene there is a potential gripe where the door behind them opens more than a foot and it's still several seconds (for Leia to kiss Luke and wish him luck) before they swing, during which a trooper could have grabbed their ankles or just shot their legs. BUT the usual excuse that they were meant to escape to lead the Death Star to the Rebel base applies, right?

Slowpoke on this, but I saw the Rogue One trailer. Please tell me I'm not the only one who thinks it doesn't look like a Star Wars movie. Looks like a generic war movie with a few Star Wars-ey things thrown in. The acting in the trailer was also questionable.

In all honesty George Lucas's throwback cinematic style is a defining hallmark of Star Wars, but carrying forward you are not going to find that so I would just let it go. Even JJ Abrams, well known for aping Spielberg, couldn't do it.

It's supposed to be a war film. In fact there was a large rumor mill going on a few months ago worrying that it would NOT turn into a war film.

I think they could have introduced him better, and I love Hamill to pieces, but he is getting salty over something understandable. The entire point was they are trying to sell a new generation of heroes and villains, and Luke us just too LOVED and IMPORTANT to not steal the spotlight the moment he arrives or does something.

He says Rey and fights Kylo? Rey is suddenly the damsel, Kylo looks like even more of a little bitch, and Luke again appears to be the true hero who has turned up just in time to save the day. They already explained that they did try and put him in earlier, but he always stole the spotlight. It was already an issue, in that most existing fans with no spoilers spent the film on the edge of their seats, waiting for him to turn up in tense scenes.

That said, I am praying the saltiness isn't because they have already killed him off in Ep8, due to that same issue. I really don't want Luke to die a failure, and so soon after we get him back on screen.

>>85185979

You call what Luke had training? They were barely fucking pep talks. Half the advice he gets sounds like the philosophical bullshit you hear all the time on TV without the Jedi theological background for it to build on. He's an impatient farm boy. He never learned to wait a few hours for power converters, let alone to be still and at peace enough to open himself to the universe.

Luke is my favorite, but he is as bullshit as Rey, it was just more subtle. Or we at least followed him at a time where training was less important than 'magic, I don't have to explain shit'.

Bit harsh to anon, aren't you? He has an opinion, same as you have your own. There are people, and I'm not saying I'm one of them, that the further removed from Star Wars traditions they move the more generic sci-fi it becomes. The Prequels themselves were derided by a very vocal group about how they had simply broken from quintessential Star Wars, so you should be familiar with these notions already.

I'm certainly going to give Rogue One a chance, and I hope everyone else does, but keep in mind it was always known this was an experiment heading into the Anthology movies. This is something a lot of people, including at Lucasfilm, have been worried about. This is something of a make or break challenge and if it breaks then there will be a huge amount of pressure on the Han Solo film to make up the slack. If it can't then the whole Anthology project may very well likely be scrapped.

Bit of an irony here. Lucas actually did work to capture the spirit of older works, in particular Star Wars bears a lot of it's storytelling to old pulp works, especially productions like Flash Gordon. You get the same thing with Indiana Jones. One of the reasons Crystal Skull is accused of "not feeling like Indiana Jones" is that they made a conscious decision to move into a different era, specifically the scifi movies of the 50s. This effects not only story structure but cinematography. Something Lucas and Spielberg have always been very keen on with their work.

When people did, and still do, get pissed that Grievous is a mustache twirling villain there is absolutely no chance that Lucas didn't do that on purpose. He is a VERY pulpy villain.

Curiously to this discussion people were earlier deriding JJ as a copycat, and here I am talking about how Lucas was doing the same thing. He was fully aware that Star Wars as a story wasn't very unique, he was aware of the Arthurian aspects of the lowly peasant boy who would be king, and he copied very specific styles. But somehow he does make it work in a way JJ struggles to. Lucas was good at capturing the spirit, JJ is more carbon copy. Or at least that's my opinion on the matter.
>>
>>85189109
JJ was incestuous, that was the problem. You don't copy YOURSELF. Down that road lies stagnation.

Not to make excuses for him, he has a shit ton of problems and after seeing what he's done to Star Trek it's clear he really has no ability to copy where it counts, as copying the feel of that franchise. And NOT by directly lifting most of the major plot points.

But production was rushed and they lost their original writer (still not 100% clear what the story was there). If I recall correctly they were pushing it only back so far as a Christmas release instead of spring/summer which didn't really allow for a lot of time for reshoots and so on.

This is less of an excuse given he was already well involved with the project before he and Kasdan where set on finishing the script.

>>85190589
Yeah, that only annoyed me because it messes with a character dynamic. Like, Anakin could do virtually anything in the prequels from building droids to being an incredible pilot and warrior, but the way the prequels were plotted meant that he didn't have need of too many of those skills per movie, what with being surrounded by so many redundant Jedi. But in a "rebels vs empire" adventure, you really need your characters to bounce each other's strengths and weaknesses off of one another. Rey being a great pilot makes Poe redundant, and being a great fighter makes Finn redundant. But hopefully Episode 8 will bring out a better dynamic among the heroes if it comes down to it.
>>
>>85190445

It sucks we never really got to see Finn fight well... Beaten by "traitor", and toyed with by Kylo.
>>
>>85190789
Well thankfully her Falcon piloting was mostly plot armor luck, and she was a much worse shot with a blaster than she was in CQC, so hopefully Poe can still be the go-to pilot while Finn is the go-to shooter. Honestly I'm fine with Rey being the primary Falcon pilot, instead of being a fighter pilot like Luke or Anakin were.
>>
>>85190880
Kylo really got screwed by the narrative. I get it. He's supposed to be a weenie. But to have the main villain lose his first onscreen lightsaber duel to a novice? It just kills the menace. If he was shown to be strong enough to win the fight despite being injured, it would show that despite his Hot Topic personality, he'd be a force to be reckoned with. But now he's just a joke.
>>
>>85190297
Well, not a GREAT pilot, per se, at least not automatically. Obi-Wan wasn't too shabby but certainly but definitely had his faults.

Jedi Starfighters are, in canon, stripped down to make them as super responsive as possible to take advantage of enhanced Jedi reflexes and so on, so that is pretty standard. And thanks to Anakin we know that even untrained you CAN benefit from such things. Luke too since the comics had him, after his first crash, manage to sense how to save his uncle from that bounty huntin' wookiee.

Rey most certainly didn't pilot like an expert (sorry to that anon who swears she did). She was desperate throughout and flying by nerve alone, and yes I'd say the Force was backing her up, making sure she only scraped wrecks but didn't damage them. The Falcon has always been a special kind of ship which would benefit from someone with Jedi reflexes.

Of course Jedi reflexes AND skill are best. It's what separates Obi-Wans from Anakins or Plo Koons.

My problem with is just how the wounds didn't make any sense. Kylo got hit a few times by a fucking lightsaber and it basically did no damage. That really ruins the lightsaber for me.
>>
>>85190962

I get what they were going for. Kylo basically went through a ten minute montage of Let's Fuck Kylo Up (mental anguish at the whole bridge scene, then shot with a weapon that can breach hulls, then forced to run around trying to catch the damn heroes, then Finn gets some more lucky scratches in) until finally it's Rey's turn, and he's still schooling her shit effortlessly until she stops fighting by herself and, like Luke in the first movie to make the practically impossible shot, Uses The Force.

It just wasn't conveyed super well, so it didn't quite come through as I think they wanted it to.

The entire movie actually had a lot of good things, but it clearly needed a couple more writing and editing passes.

The menace was already gone by that point. I like Kylo as a character but he doesn't really come across as menacing. Even the two stormtroopers that notice his tantrum seem less afraid and more "oh, not this again."

Nah, I'm used to the Force stepping in and giving weaker opponents the edge by now. Plus, it was more the fact that Kylo never actually intended to kill her. He was holding back at a point where his body was starting to give out. It was more than just Rey beating him. If he had been totally healthy, in his right mind, and trying to actually kill her - sure, it would have taken his menace. I can look past it, as we got it, and see how badass he actually must be to have been still going at that point.

I mean it's a Lego series (which is what makes it so much fun) so it's not like it has to worry about canon. They could have even explained how Luke and Leia had to run to escape the Empire so couldn't meet Naare. Ah well. >>85191314
I'd say relatively lost. There's a lot that you'd need to know beforehand about characters that get involved, events from earlier episodes, etc. You could probably wiki some of that stuff but part of what makes the Maul storyline so good is that it ties in to earlier stories from the series. If you watch X character die or Y character appear, you may know who they are by looking them up on the Wook but you lose the impact of those events by not watching earlier stories about them.
>>
>>85191397
It's a fairly long chain of events that passes along from certain characters to others. As long as you have a good idea of the general structure of the show, you should be fine just watching every episode with Asaaj Ventress. Eventually, her episodes bleed into the Nightsister episodes which lead to Savage Oppresses episodes which lead to all of Maul's episodes.

Also you'll need to watch most of the Mandalorian Death Watch episodes, but there aren't too many of those before Maul shows up.
>>
>>85191209
One of things I did like about EP1 was actually them cutting up the droids. They just fall apart. But the best part is Qui cutting up the door like it's nothing. TFA lightsabers just suck.
>>
>>85189733
Some people could still feel the magic, others felt it was just too different. It's not even that Soviet troopers aren't as fun as Nazis when it comes to villains since Temple of Doom was fun.

Crystal Skull was a disappointment mostly because that was the best they could do after so long, and after delaying until they supposedly had everything just right. But I do still enjoy parts of it. It was TRYING to be Indiana Jones, and respectful to the earlier work. I love how they referenced the Young Indiana Jones adventures in particular. They sure as hell weren't trying to rape anyone's childhood. But in the end it just wasn't quite what it needed to be. At least to me.

Sonny was the robot's name. It's not the best movie and has some Lebouf antics that are just...really super. But I don't mind it and Alan Tudyk's performance was great.

I disagree. The prequels made lightsabers feel cheap and expendable, in spite of Obiwan's constant nagging about them. TFA presented each lightsaber as a rare and priceless artifact of incredible power and importance, which perfectly contrasted shots of them and characters showing awe at their appearance.

Much like the movie TFA was shamelessly imitating, a lightsaber didn't actually have to cut through anything to look important and powerful.
>>
>>85191363
>It just felt off.
It could have been an honest attempt at remaining somewhat canon. Even if everything isn't 1:1 canon the important details might be. Freemaker family might be real, Rowan being trained by Naare and have met Luke etc

I refuse to accept the shitty Kyber saber story because it's too similar to one of my own Star Wars story ideas but MUCH, much worse.

>>85191363

If only because of how careful they were in these things, I think they likely are treating the events and characters as broad-strokes canon, even if the show itself isn't. Like, it's Master Rowan telling tall tales to a kid, using their toys as tools, after the fall of the Empire.

The thing with it is that it's not 100% out there for Star Wars. After all Lucas considered Force enhancing objects before, thank you Splinters of the Mind's Eye for never becoming real canon.

And of course Kyber based weapons aren't unheard of. Moon destroying ones are surely too much. I'm kind of hoping this is a "the sword is pointless, I found the kyber saver in a cracker jack box!" moment where Rowan learns the real power was in him all along and the Emperor basically goes, "Well that's a gyp. Fuck these magical journey of self-discovery macguffins, I'm outties. I think it's because he's not what you'd call a cunning warrior. There is no subtlety or guile to his movements, he's very forceful and even brutish. But no less effective! Compare him to someone else who loves to act snarly, Darth Maul. Maul had much more style and grace. He was goddamn Ray Park, how could he not be! Still capable of brutality but also some feints. Kylo Ren is just really REALLY angry, but he also comes off as a bit unfocused. Unleashing him is more like a tactical nuke dropped on the enemy, but I cannot help feel that if he had some proper discipline and ability to master his own emotions a bit better, he'd finally be closer to Darth Vader in the way he wants to be. Vader knows just how much force to apply, pun intended. He can make a point out of someone or he can murder everyone in the room.

When Rey finally opens up to the Force she's the same way, very aggressive and frankly comes off a bit clumsy. Freddie Prinze and Sam Witwer talked about it a bit on Collider, I think. The Force was certainly with her in that fight but there is no way you couldn't say she is in desperate need of a teacher. The earlier skill she showed with her staff just doesn't translate well into swordwork.

>There is no subtlety or guile to his movements, he's very forceful and even brutish.

In approach, yes, but didn't you pick up on the fact that every force technique he uses (except pulling the officer and pushing Rey) are not only done with more power and ease then we have seen short of Palptatine and Yoda, but all based on PACIFYING the enemy?

Freezing an opponent in place for capture, rendering them unconscious with a gesture, and even a bit of 'shock and awe' in stopping the blaster bolts. All this opposed to what we saw in TCW, with lightning thrown about, picking up and tossing people around.

Aside from that, I agree with you. In a physical sense, though he is clearly used to his weapon and flourishes with it plenty, he is indeed pretty wild. That said, whenever he pulls back from Finn, he looks... refined? Fuck it, he's as fractured as a fighter as he is a person.

I do see what you are getting at, though.

Plus, their story might connect to Rogue One, so there's still plenty of possibility opening up. Also, I feel like the characters alone are enough to justify its importance. When I said "what could be done with them in the hands of someone who was trained to use them", I didn't really mean Luke and Kylo. As far as it goes based on what we've seen, they're the least skilled swordsmen thus far. And S-1 Ezra. What Jedi were capable of in their prime before and during the Clone Wars blew what Luke and Kylo could do out of the water.

And do you know what his penchant for holding people in midair and freezing them in place with the Force is like?

A cruel child playing with his bug collection, skewering them with pins while still alive and leaving them writhing.

He's nothing but a cruel child, a bully. He delights in showing his mastery over others, having power over them. The moment Rey breaks his hold, what did he do? He ran to daddy Snoke to tattle! "Daddy, daddy! She was very mean to me when I just wanted to play doctor!" This isn't an impression that is helped when he has that childish rivalry with Hux going on for the Supreme Leader's affection.

Alternative character interpretations. Paired with his feeling the 'light' calling to him, I believe he isn't nearly as 'evil' as he tries so hard to portray. It doesn't help that when someone finally does see him as nothing but a monster, he tries everything he can to turn that around. He is the 'sensitive' kid that tries to be bad because he thinks it will somehow make him strong enough to take lifes licks, and that it will all stop hurting.
>>
>>85192908
Nobody is trying to say he's good or nice, but he has behavior that undercuts any of those powers he shows. Though frankly I don't see him doing things with ease that we haven't already seen. His only big power was freezing a blaster bolt in midair, but bit whoop that was because most Jedi and Sith wouldn't bother freezing it when they have these energy blades to deflect it. Some people really found that power impressive, but when you think about it it really doesn't make much sense. Vader slapping away Han's shots with the Force was so much more effective since he was basically duplicating the power of the blade, albeit with his droid hands.

Nobody is denying he isn't powerful, but masterful? I'd disagree. He just doesn't show enough control, and I'm not sure he's ever really dueled anyone with powers like his, just as I don' think he's ever tried to use the Force on the mind of anyone who also had the Force, albeit untrained. Even wounded both Finn and Rey were able to score hits on him. And while yes he was wounded you could see how intensely uncomfortable they were with their blades fighting for the first time. They were rightly scared, but even then he had trouble with them.

I'm with Snoke, he still has to complete his training.

being emotionally sensitive and having the Force was always a danger. It was Anakin's biggest failure after all, and one of the reasons the Jedi were so hesitant to teach him in the first place. Skywalkers appear to be highly vulnerable through their emotions. It was with Luke, too, but he eventually resisted.

Of course to be fair it is with everyone. It's why Maul tested Obi-Wan with Satine's murder. Not everyone is able to sublimate their emotions.

The tensions dont carry any weight to it unless the blue haired hero character fights the evil red saber white skinned black armored miniboss and then everyone is expected to give a shit.
>>
>>85193092

Not that anon, but...

>but bit whoop that was because most Jedi and Sith wouldn't bother freezing it when they have these energy blades to deflect it.

Shock and awe. The New Order is all about it. And to be fair that, and holding people perfectly still (they still flounder around in every instance in TCW), are all done while he shows no concious effort at maintaining the power and even wanders around talking casually. That's pretty at ease. And control? Outside Sheev, whenever anyone uses a force power they always look constipated, stand still, and hold gestures. Kylo practically chills while drinking latte when he freezes people.
>>
>>85193092
>His only big power was freezing a blaster bolt in midair
Which doesn't even really play into anything. That ability never turns up again in the movie, it doesn't foreshadow anything and even as a demonstration of how powerful he is it doesn't match up because we don't really see him do anything that impressive again. So it really is just a throwaway "LOOK HOW COOL THIS IS" moment that could have been removed without changing a thing.

How many millions of miles does even a second in hyperspace account for? I can't imagine even jedi reflexes could pull the ship out just after passing the shield but before hitting the surface. This would have been the perfect time to borrow something from an earlier movie, in particular they find a FO Star Destroyer or similar big ship heading to Starkiller, maybe Finn knows their ship patrol routines, and while it's descending through the atmosphere they detach under cover of the flare of the ship flaring as it enters gravity.

Finn thinks it's suitable insane, Han says it's worked before ... only when it comes time to starting the engines the Falcon does it's standard won't-turn-over noise. Han manages to get the engines going just before they hit, so they still skid across the surface.

A callback with a humorous twist of ANOTHER callback almost getting them killed.
