What do you guys think of the below?

>>85130186
If you're talking about Darth Bane's shade, that's not the same as a force ghost. A force ghost is a continuation of the actual life beyond the body, but I feel that Darth Bane was not wholly himself. He was more like a traditional ghost: a remnant or fragment of the original personality warped by years of dark side use.

Consider that neither Darth Revan nor Bane from the old EU were allowed to manifest a la Force Ghost to Anakin during the Mortis Arc.

FWIW that was never any shade of Bane, or even Bane at all. It was the Priestesses testing Yoda. It was a vision, not any kind of spirit or soul of Bane. He was consumed by the Cosmic Force when he died the same as everyone else who hasn't learned how to become a Force Ghost.

It has occurred to me that the general response and willingness to discuss TFA, on many sites, has reached Prequel levels. People treat Rey as if she were Jar Jar as acted out by Hayden Christensen.

Why this is so is baffling, but TFA Defender and Prequel Defender are pretty much equated as being the same level of villainy. At least by the usual suspects, i.e. /tv/.

What I mean is that people, even if they still claim the Prequels are worse, talk about the Sequels in the exact same way, with the same levels of hatred. There is a degree of utter childishness about it that seems the same. "Hey I just posted a picture of Daisy Ridley's teeth, let's point at her and laugh and agree she's a mary sue and also that TFA was badly written!"

Sure TFA is flawed but I never thought we'd get to the point where it was this bad.

In the old canon, somewhat possible. Luke Skywalker and his son used a special force meditation technique and were sent into a memory of the Jedi Temple on Coruscant before Order 66. Another story told of a goddess named Tilotny who manipulated time and space, unknowing sending three Stormtroopers far into the past.

>>85131409
Yes, but mostly in visions, which can be misleading. You are also unbound to time when you are a Force Ghost, however you are limited in how much you can tell people so the value of this is rather lost.

As for physically travel in time, or technology? Iffy. The Story Group is on record as stating that time doesn't actually work the same way in Star Wars as it does here. They don't have temporal relativity, for instance.

Will we ever get a series where the Imperials are the protagonists?

When I first saw Rebels I thought an Imperial counterpart series would be an interesting thing to air when Rebels is on mid-season hiatus or whatever. Like, have an Imperial light cruiser hunting pirates, smugglers, and Rebels in the Outer Rim. Show us why people want a strong military and government to keep them safe following the Clone Wars and why there are so many people who join the Empire.

That's the fantasy. The sad reality is the first moment their squadron engages two TIEs will clip wings, one exploding and the other spinning out into another TIE causing both to explode, one will crash into a space rock, the other will be shot by Han Solo who keeps flying out of the sun while screaming, YAHOO!, as he's prone to doing, and then at least one will be suddenly eaten by a giant space worm, but at least the pilot will become one with the spice.

Any survivors are likely to quite and then join the Rebellion.

It irks me how in order to avoid (presumably) the flaws of the Prequels they went too far in the opposite direction and ended up equally flawed on the opposite end of the spectrum.

No, not the spectrum 4chan obsesses over. The Prequels had vision and beautiful visuals, a truly imaginative setting, but the execution of the story was flawed. The story itself is fine and TCWs did help account for its worst mistakes (not that you can expect everybody to watch a series with 6 seasons). TFA, however, had a far more compelling story...that it sadly ripped most from the OT (some argue this was necessary to get the story back on track, whatever the hell that means) and yet the visuals, despite a decades worth of FX evolution, were totally lacking. Drab, mundane locales, boring ships, some outright fake looking aliens, and wasn't even the Practical Effects™ that had been hyped leading up to the release of the film.

But it's only the first installment and JJ is gone. We'll have to see what Looper guy can do. Will he thrill? Or will we end up with a Suicide Squad?

Finished this yesterday.

I loved it even though I think it should have been totally different. As much as I enjoyed the story and characters, I really wish the plot actually revolved around Leia running for office DESPITE the galaxy finding out her secret. Thats what the press material made me think it was going to be about, and I was really dissapointed to find out its only one plot point and towards the end of the book. There is a lot of potential in a story like that like maybe a group of centrist senators who actually begin to love and respect Leia after finding out the news. Also for some reason I had it in my mind that pic related was going to be an actual poster in the book that someone defaces.

There was also way more action and adventure than I thought there would be. I went into this expecting a full of political book made specifically for the star wars fans that love space politics.

Overall as much as I enjoyed it, looking back I see it as lost potential. Anybody share my opinion?

Question (which may or may not involve spoilers): How much space politics are in this book? From your expectations it sounds like you wanted/thought there would be a bit more.

It doesn't have to be Game of Thrones, or even Game of Thrones-lite, but I hunger for storied tales of space bureaucracy.

Suicide Squad is on suicide watch. I only wish that were a joke, and it could theoretically turn around, and people could watch it regardless of reviewers.

Worries me a bit since Rogue One went under reshoots around the same time, and I'm not sure I buy the story that it was just to fix Saw's hair.

I know, I know, the two things do not have to follow. Reshoots aren't always a bad thing. Still, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't apprehensive.
>>
>>85136189

I'm not concerned about Suicide Squad. I honestly believe that Disney is doing under the table deals with critics to sabotage the competition. Would hardly be the first time; there is big money in all this.

I enjoyed BvS, so imagine I'll have a hell of a ride with SS. Off to see it tuesday.

Rogue One, though, despite being a Star Wars super nerd, hasn't grabbed me. Something just doesn't feel right. Or to put another way: I have a bad feeling about this...

The book is technically ALL politics since it deals directly with the Senate and the political structure of the New Republic and/or the players of the galactic political stage. However very little of the book takes place in the Senate. It's merely the driving factor.

Some people found it dead boring. Some even refused to finish it. I can understand why they'd feel this way (I didn't care much for Lost Stars, personally) but I enjoyed it well enough. It had plenty of background about the structure and nature of the New Republic that would have been nice to know in TFA, and Rian Johnson is said to have contributed to the design of their politics, particularly their space political parties, the Centrists and the Populists.

>>85136313

>>
>>85136313
Even if they were bribing critics, at least more so than at any other time when they give "gift packages" to reviewers, I cannot see them doing so in any meaningful way to enough critics for it to even matter. A conspiracy is as hard to keep hidden as the number of people who know about it.

I just cannot imagine anything on the scale necessary just to sabotage DC's films when we all know filmmakers are perfectly capable of fucking up on their own. After all, we're still arguing whether JJ "saved star wars" (or whether it even needed saving) or is a hack.

I have no doubt that big media corporations are paying for shills on the internet. Not run themselves, of course, but outsourcing to modern snakeoil salesmen who managed to convince them they can "shape the online perception" of products. It's the kind of hubris the corporations would show. Even flooding sites like RT with negative user reviews. But critics themselves? In the numbers necessary to influence the score? I just cannot see that working.
>>
>>85136798
Not too mention that critical failures like Transformers made bank in the box office. Corporate's ultimate goal is to get good returns and make a profit, while they rely on critical films to secure Oscars. Oscar season is kinda-sorta fall and winter, when all of the "deep dramas" get released.

On a more related note, Star Wars aims to be dominating the Winter season, while Marvel and other Disney movies move into Spring and Summer respectively. Disney's trying to get a blockbuster each season/quarter.
>>
>>85136564
I don't agree with everything that happened in the ending but at least it's what had to happen to set things up for TFA.

I still hate that Han Solo has his own transport and shipping company that he seems to practically fun like a family, filled with a lot of ex-smugglers and racers. He even handles racing on the side. Then after Ben goes missing he returns to 'what he was good at' which is just being a small time smuggler and nerf herder. Felt like such bullshit. I'd have been happier if he used his company to become the suppliers and de facto smugglers helping to outfit Leia's Resistance, but no they had to become estranged for some reason.
>>
>>85136925
>Felt like such bullshit.

To be completely honest, it sounds like the author was beholden to set up Han's death in TFA much like how Genndy was beholden to give Grievous a cough by the end of 2003 Clone Wars. Worst "tweest" in TFA, it curtailed a lot of potential for the future and precluded a lot of potential for the past.

In other words, I pretty much agree with you.
>>
>>85136900
The way I understand it Suicide Squad was always meant to be grittier, it was bad guys (mostly) after all. But then after the massive slip up that was Batman v Supes and the surprise success of Deadpool they studio ordered more humor. This is around the same time we heard that Rogue One, also meant to be grittier than normal Star Wars since it's telling a war story rather than a straight up fantasy romp. When studios start meddling, especially with things like, "We need more slapstick. Can someone throw a pie?", because they think it's what the audience wants this is when films tend to become choppy messes. Studio interference is rarely for the best. Sometimes it happens, but it would be easier to list off the resulting disasters.
>>
>>85137068
I heard that in SS's case, things really fumbled when it came time to screen the film for test audiences. Panicked edits were produced, versions which were drastically different from the director's vision, and were thrown at test audiences within a very short time frame. The purpose of these edits was to remain consistent to the audience expectations established by the trailer, and you know how much trailers are meant to lie about their films. It quickly became a rollercoaster of hasty decisions.

Unlike Tranktastic, which was almost doomed from the start, I feel like SS fell victim to self-sabotage. I suspect the original vision of the film could have held up, but I just don't know for sure. If they'd been willing to be flexible with their time-frames and lay off the pressure to produce a "Marvel-killer" (reminds me of all those "WoW-killers"), I sincerely believe the original film would have gotten much better reviews.

But Star Wars.

>>85137067
I didn't like how TFA reduced Han's character. And Leia's. It reset any growth they might have had over the last thirty years just so they could be doing the exact things they were in ANH. That isn't 100% fair but it was fair enough. It was hard to imagine Han basically deciding to lose Leia too after he lost Ben. There are fights Han will gladly run away from, but giving up on his friends, the few people in the galaxy he loves? No sir, I don't like it.

However I didn't really care much because I liked Harrison Ford's performance. I felt he gave it the exact touch that was needed. I liked his Han, and I think one of the few things he needed to see, how quickly he formed a bond with Finn and Rey, was sold well enough that we rarely see people complain about that. Han in TFA is so damaged, but he doesn't show it. As a father he's so lost that he latches onto these two kids as a kind of surrogate despite trying to dump them the first chance he gets, and the second. I liked that touch. It was the closest we saw to Han as a father in the films, and maybe one trying to make up for any role he had in sending Ben on his dark path. It's more obvious with Rey but I do like his scenes with Finn and his occasional fatherly advice, especially about women.

Hell, some people still think she's Han and Leia's secret kid. He does give her some odd looks, but I think it's more him responding to her feelings of abandonment by her family. Hard not to see how Han might feel his pushing Ben away, off on Luke, lead to Ben's fall. Whether true or not, it's still something that would feed your guilt.

>you know how much trailers are meant to lie about their films
It seems that they've taken this to such a ridiculous degree these days that they aren't doing themselves any favors. They can be tongue in cheek about it, sure, like releasing a Christmas themed horror movie or something like that, but sometimes they just go too damn far.

Oh well. I don't even know why they'd need to create a Marvel killer. I saw a thread today (one of the very many on this subject) where people were complaining that audiences just want to see more Marvel films, but a lot of the reviews I've been reading is that superhero films have fallen into something of a rut and nobody is breaking the mold.

Then there's the problem where I don't think movie execs know what "fun" is. They seem to think it's laughing out loud the entire movie, but screw that. People just want to have LITERAL fun. People, especially summer audiences, want to be entertained, not preached at or dragged through a painful romp. Even scary can be fun.

>It reset any growth they might have had over the last thirty years just so they could be doing the exact things they were in ANH.
One of the big problems with TFA's setting is that it required almost everything to be reset. Victory over the Empire? Nope, we have Empire 2 now, complete with Palpatine 2 and Vader 2 (though in fairness Kylo does stand on his own rather than just being a Vader clone, and serving as the FO's Vader analogue is actually fitting for him). Restoring democracy to the galaxy? Nope, New Republic just got blown out. A new start for the Jedi? Nope, right back down to one guy in hiding. The jury's still out on whether Anakin fulfilling the prophecy really means anything- he destroyed the Sith, but we don't know enough about Snoke and the Knights of Ren to determine what makes them different from the Sith's philosophy.

There were so many ways we could've had another dark side villain with his own evil forces without making the ending to ROTJ meaningless, but instead we get a full reset.

This is a bad way of looking at the franchise because it assumes the Original trilogy is flawless. The OT has a fair share of problems and flaws which have mostly been forgotten due to the release of newer films. For a time, the Empire Strikes Back was disliked by fans and critics a like for a very long time. Then ROTJ was hated for a good while. The thing is these problems still exist but have largely been forgotten because fans looked over them in favor of gunning for the new films. Acting like one trilogy is superior to the other is kind of asininein my opinion.

I think it's the one that stands out for a few reasons. One was the fairly hefty bombshell about Luke's baby daddy. Second was how it is still to this day considered one of the best middle stories in a trilogy, to which other trilogies are held up to.

And distantly, since fortunately not everyone knows about it, we dodged a huge fucking bullet. Imagine if Splinter of the Mind's Eye had been our sequel. It would have been like having the Holiday Special take ESB's place.
>>
>>85138124
I'm sure Bail Organa found something useful to do with the captured Imperial ships.

Probably the Inquisitor's TIE got taken apart for study on account of being a new model (and also too rare use on cover missions without drawing attention to itself).

Oh, and with these guys defecting, that makes for enough TIEs to give that Gozanti a full complement.

I don't believe this because Disney would be shooting themselves in the foot. They need DC around for the superhero genre to be doing well. Look at it this way. If the OT wasn't a critical success we wouldn't be here talking about it to this day, so past success certainly counts. You can also count flaws in a positive light to other movies in the "At least TFA wasn't the Prequels" (note: I'm not saying that myself, only repeating what has been said about TFA. This is not a statement I am endorsing in any way. This is anonymous and I do not approve this message).

However I've never seen a successful movie result in anyone claiming, for instance, that they loved TFA but Jar Jar and/or ewoks happened therefore they must actually hate TFA.

You can compare and contrast these movies, sure, and that can be constructive and useful in certain ways, but I cannot see how a flaw in a past movie is still a flaw in a different movie even if they are meant to build off of each other. Each trilogy is still a self-contained story even if it is part of the larger Star Wars universe.

true, but I wouldn't go as far as to say a full reset.

The republic just lost most of it's senators, it's fleet, and the Hosnian system. They really fucking felt the blow. But, they also moved the Senate from system to system to stop the New Republic really having a true center. New leaders will be elected, a new fleet built and manned and likely bigger due to a new war, and they will stop bickering for a time. It's basically what would happen if you bombed DC to rubble. America wouldn't end. It would mourn, and be hella pissed, and then shit would really get starter. This was Pearl Harbor.

The New Order also doesn't come across as big enough to be called a second Empire, in the same way the Resistance is around the size of a single Rebel cell pre-Yavin.

The Jedi, as ever, likely still are scattered around the galaxy in the same way that Luke was the 'last' during the OT. Though they are likely getting ever-more like hedge knights the more generations removed from the old order they are. If he were canon, Rowan would likely be a Jedi Master who has trained several apprentices by TFA. Same for Ezra, if he hasn't died yet.

TFA showed us a tiny section of what is really going on, in the same way ANH did. I want to know how Coruscant is doing.

>>
>>85139841

I doubt they would go with that in the end, to be honest. Would be a waste of an iconic location they have decent reason to reuse at some point, even if that is to destroy it on-screen.

Not that it's actually canon, of course, and that's a good thing. I prefer Lego cartoons to use similar physics to the Lego Movie where their universe is literally made out of bricks.

They all can. Ahsoka had an entire episode dedicated to it, specifically how difficult premonitions are to accurately read.

It's their minds linking with the Cosmic Force, which is outside the universe and time and space, etc etc, timey whimey bs, as opposed to being mindful of the Living Force which is the here and now.

Sometimes it's just a danger sense, sometimes it's a flash of imagery and sounds. Ezra is really good at the former, but rarely in time for it to actually be useful.

The problem with Rebels is that while it has gotten pretty good recently, overall it's strangled by the timeline restrictions, budget, and the need to shove Jedi into everything. Now, Freemaker Adventures has the Jedi problem, but because it's 'not canon' it can just be fun.

I'm not a fan of Lego adaptations usually, the only Lego game I've been able to enjoy was Marvel Superheroes, and yet I'm really loving Freemaker Adventures. The Luke appearance was great, especially. We don't have enough of Endor-era Luke in the new canon yet.

Yes, Ahsoka's death would have been a perfect capstone to some Ahsoka-centric adventures which never occurred in-show. Instead we're going to "legally buy the book" in order to find out what happened. While a show can thrive despite it's restrictions, Rebels has been hampered at times by its place in the canon.

It sucks, but if you're going to hand the license out to anyone making a game, movie, TV show, or book without the original writer's involvement, its going to happen, and since George doesn't seem to care all that much, its probably a certainty.

Honestly, people like Filoni being involved with the license at all is a fucking miracle.

We've had hints and references to things surrounding Revan's lore already and at least one visual reference (the darksider hologram in the Obi-Wan and Anakin comic). Two if we count Kylo Ren's costume.

I wouldn't be surprised if Filoni plans to tie in Revan's Mando helmet with Sabine and have it possess her like the Sith helmet in the Lando comics. Earlier stories have been foreshadowing future events in nu-canon. They've established possession with Sith artifacts and the Nightsisters (Maul comic, based on cancelled TCW episodes). This could be a good way to reintroduce the character, since Filoni has been thinking of a way to use the character that makes sense in a story. Putting the helmet in TCW as a "gift" to Sabine and making her an antagonist could work out. Especially if Ezra has to fight her.

>>85147483
Funny thing how you should say that, I was literally thinking over this the other day.
Everything in TFA felt like it was set in our own world and not outside our solar system. I'm talking about all the locations they used for filming.

>Jakku
Just your average desert.
>Resistance Base
That same set that has literally been used hundreds of times in other films and tv shows
>Starkiller Base
Just Iceland
>Maz Kanata's castle
Lake District
>Rey and Ren's first meeting
Just your average forest
>First jedi temple
Literally just one of the many islands around Ireland

Don't get me wrong, this would've great if it was another film that was set in Earth. It's very good for tourism and everything but this is Star Wars. There's a whole galaxy out there but all they could bring the table were locations that we've seen countless times in tv advertisements alone. They could've spent a bit more time on places Hosnian Prime than just a few seconds. I mean even the OT had Bespin and the Death Star. I don't know... I feel like this is one of the things they wasted on for the new trilogy.

Effectively an orphan living on a desert planet where her parents might still be alive? Check. Pilot? Check. Turns out she's a Force user? Check. Has an older mentor figure who gives her a brief lesson in the Force and that's her only training? Hi Maz. Obi-Wan tells her she's taken her first steps into a larger world? Shit yeah. She even obtain's Luke's first lightsaber.
>>
>>85147863
That reminds me of how ridiculous is that in nu-canon Han & Leia named their son after Ben Kenobi. Han barely knew the guy, and Leia had never actually met the him. She also knew OF him exclusively as Obi-Wan Kenobi. The only person who knew him as "Ben" was Luke.
>>
>>85148586
i completely agree, i started complaining to my friend in the theatre when i heard that

>>
>>85148586
Consider that without Obi-Wan Kenobi it wouldn't have been possible for Luke and Leia to be born. He saved their mother from Mustafar. He was also effectively their dad's brother and I find it hard not to imagine Bail never told her about him, especially not before sending her to pick him up from Tatooine. If Bail is her adoptive father then Obi-Wan is the closest thing she had to a godfather.

And given that Luke apparently told them everything even Han who knew him as a crazy old wizard surely softened his opinion of the man who helped save them on the Death Star at the cost of his own life and then proceeded to help their fight against the Empire as a ghost.

Now consider that Obi-Wan Kenobi is a hard name to use in an honorific naming scheme. They just defaulted to Ben since it is the most normal.

Now imagine that Obi-Wan's ghost watched them conceive Ben while nodding sagely.

I love how the prequels went from "dogshit awful" to "they're flawed movies but at least[...]" in the span of 10 years. It's sad to share a fanbase with idiots who change their mind to what other people say like Plinkett. when that new review drops, we're going to have another decade worth of star wars shitposting

Just like the burnt-out blind eyes of Kanan
Good bye, Ahsoka, hello Alderaan.

Corellia has heard the holo-call
And you know it means rebellion, one and all
I don't suppose Star Wars will ever end
There's sequels that will fuck it up again.

Good bye, my waifu, hello Alderaan
A speeder bike, a ship with laser guns
Artoo must deliver the Death Star plans
Good bye, Ahsoka, hello Alderaan.

There's Y-wings waiting for us at the base
Prepared to blast the Emperor in the face
We must find a weakness in the battle station
Or else Mon Mothma's work will be undone.

I hope and pray someday the stars will learn
That by the Force, the Jedi shall return
Defeat Moff Tarkin now, at any cost
Or someday, our own planets will be lost.

How can we outwit that blue guy Thrawn?
Good bye, Ahsoka, hello Alderaan.

Weird point I'm trying to put across here but has it ever been pointed out how un-American Star Wars is.
I don't mean that in a unpatriotic, anti-American, political sense but in terms of the tone and story of Star Wars, it's very universal.
Compare it to another similarly huge American icon, Superman is overtly American. Star Wars doesn't have any sort of patriotic association with it, which is strange for a movie series from the USA which has become so culturally significant.
>>
>>85153142
Just wait Anon.
It will become more American now that Disney runs it. It already started with TFA.
>>
>>85153142
Pardon the pun, but Star Wars has a universal appeal. Since it doesn't take place on Earth and its lore seems to be ambiguous in nature, it has aspects that appeal to all cultures.
>>
>>85153142
Almost like there is no America in SW to be patriotic over. Why shove that down the throats of people in other countries that already don't like it, when it is not necessary in the first place?
>>
>>85153142
It was inspired by un-american things so it's not exactly surprising. TFA felt too american though.

We don't know that. Mind you, what they showed in the trailer probably accounted for not even half of the first half of the season. There are probably more in store for us this season and next, provided they get renewed for a fourth season.

Mind you, we know there were at least eight of them. And out of those eight, five are dead. So there's at least three more, assuming there weren't more than eight.

In the old canon you could only look into the past, not influence it. The only real case of actual time travel was the book Crosscurrent, where some Sith and Jedi traveled like 5k years into the future because of magic ore or something. But they were mostly all dead by the end of the book

I'm saying you can't just take an earth environment and then be done with that.
Ep 1 had Tatooine, Naboo and Coruscant.
Ep 2 had Coruscant, Naboo, Tatooine, Kamino, Geonosis.
Ep 3 had Coruscant, Utapau, Mustafar, all the planets during Order 66 and Polis Massa.
Ep 4 had Tatooine and Yavin.
Ep 5 had Hoth, Dagobah, Bespin.
Ep 6 had Tatooine and Endor.

So really, it was only the OT who just used straight up earth environments. But there was always something there that spruced it up. With local animal aliens and such.

I guess my biggest problem is just that the planets in TFA just ripped off the ones we had in the OT and that's why they get extra boring.
Jakku = Tatooine 2
Takodana = Yavin IV 2
We barely see anything of D'qar, it's just green
Ahch-To is literally just an island.

Wait, so people are willing to accept that the Empire not totally being defeated in the EU is perfectly ok, but for the new continuity it's unacceptable? Just because a side takes a major hit doesn't mean it's down for the count. There were far more people in the empire than just Vader and the Emperor. It's completely logical that there will be sympathizers that stop at nothing to try to overthrow the other side. Considering Star Wars has always been about the struggle between light vs dark, I don't see how this is much of a complaint.

>A new start for the Jedi? Nope, right back down to one guy in hiding.

Honestly, that's one of the major problems the prequels had. Everyone had a lightsaber, so the lightsaber didn't feel all that special anymore. I would love to see a Jedi Temple that differs from what we've seen in the prequels, but I'm fine with keeping force users and lightsaber users to a minimum

In short, the end of the ROTJ was never meant to completely eradicate the Empire, that would be silly. Likewise, just because the last of the Sith has been destroyed doesn't mean they'll stay destroyed. There will be force users that opt to become Jedi, and in turn get seduced by the dark side and become Sith. It's an eternal struggle

I think the people who think the First Order is a lazy choice for an antagonist also thought the Imperial Remnant limping on for years was a terrible idea.

The problem with the First Order isn't so much that it's Empire 2.0, but that it's billed as a new organization but it still has the trappings of the Empire, operates like it, and even makes the same mistakes having learned nothing from the Empire's error. Logically, it does make sense for a new organization that wants to carry on the Empire's work to use a lot of its iconography and structure, but creatively it's a very lazy decision. It gives the impression that they did this not because they thought this was the best direction for a new antagonist, but because they wanted the Empire and stormtrooper and TIEs back without it literally being the Empire.

It's more like compared to how planets were treated in the Prequels and Originals, there was nothing in Episode VII that made the planets feel unique or worth exploring. There's only one settlement on Jakku with eternal desert peppered by crashed ships and AT-ATs. Only one settlement on Takodana with eternal jungles. Literally just RAF hangars on D'Qar and green plains, and from what we've seen, an island with a possible Temple on Ahch-To.

None of the planets in TFA are endearing. None of them I'd like to visit once even on a whim because there's literally nothing of intrigue. No doubt Ahch-To will get much more interesting with VIII, but planets should usually convey their intrigue in the movies they premiere in. It's why the arrival on Coruscant in TPM is probably my favorite planet sequence with Bespin's coming right up after that. The visuals, sound and music were all perfect.

It was, same with having Luke, Leia and Han front and center for years after ROTJ, even after their kids were already old enough to take over as leads. We prayed for something new instead of constantly leftover Imperials... so they gave us the Vong. Definite double-edged sword there.

>Everyone had a lightsaber, so the lightsaber didn't feel all that special anymore.

I disagree. It was perfectly acceptable that every Jedi had a lightsaber. They were Knights after all. On a symbolic level, swords usually go hand in hand with knights. And that we saw what a lightsaber can do in the hands of a trained expert made it all the more special in my eyes. Though I think the difference between you and me is that I see it as how Obi-wan described it, 'an elegant weapon of a more civilized age'. Whereas I think you see it in a more Excalibur like way.

>but I'm fine with keeping force users and lightsaber users to a minimum

I'm not. I wanted to see the Jedi Order on it's way back to it's former glory.

>just because the last of the Sith has been destroyed doesn't mean they'll stay destroyed

Actually, it straight up does. The ways of the Sith are something that can only be taught. With no more Sith to pass on their teachings and traditions means no more Sith ever. They're extinct.

>Honestly, that's one of the major problems the prequels had. Everyone had a lightsaber, so the lightsaber didn't feel all that special anymore.

...but... that doesn't make sense at all. The lightsaber is the weapon of a Jedi Knight. The Prequels featured the Jedi at their height, numerically even more so. Saturation doesn't alone ruin intrigue. Portrayal does. The only thing wrong with the lightsaber's portrayal in the Prequels is that past Episode I, where Qui-Gon was shown to nearly melt a blast door away with his lightsaber, the lightsaber was passively portrayed as nothing more than a combative weapon - which it is, admittedly - when it could have been much more. Nothing big and overblown, but more of a showing as to why it was the iconographical symbol of the Jedi. But there was a story to tell, so it's understandable that such a thing wouldn't get that kind of focus.

I guess my point was moreso that the increase in Jedi onscreen made Jedi less special, and in turn made lightsabers less special. Perhaps a major benefactor to that mentality was that they had the lifespan of flies, but I'd rather see less Jedi because I feel I can appreciate them more. I guess I do see it more as an Excalibur thing, from a storytelling perspective

>The ways of the Sith are something that can only be taught. With no more Sith to pass on their teachings and traditions means no more Sith ever

I'm using Sith more as a catch-all term. Their specific teachings may be long gone, but what they stand for will always be present, since it's a primal desire

I still don't see it that way. We got to see the Jedi at their prime, saw what they were about and what they could do. If anything, seeing that in the prequels made it even more special for the OT era. At least to me.

>I'm using Sith more as a catch-all term.

Then you should probably not do that. The Sith is something specific. It's not a two sided coin between the Jedi and the Sith. There are groups that span the spectrum of the living force. All Sith are Dark Side, not all Dark Side are Sith. If it were the latter, than Snoke, the knights of Ren, Maul(currently), the Nightsisters and the Son would be counted as Sith.

>Their specific teachings may be long gone, but what they stand for will always be present, since it's a primal desire

The thing with the Sith is that they advance it beyond just being primal desire. Sure, when you strip away the layers of philosophy and study of the emotions that power the Dark Side, it all comes down to primal desire, but the Sith turned it into something incomprehensible from what the Jedi teach of it. Because beyond that primal desire is the discipline to control it from going out of control, to make it work according to plans and circumstances, which is what we see of Palpatine's era. Because primal desire alone destroyed the old Sith.

>But in turn, I think less Jedi Knights and Padawans would still be the better choice because it allows for more diversity in what it is a Jedi can do

It seems more your problem is less with how many Jedi there are on screen and more what we can see them do. Which is limited by what's happening on screen. I'm going to assume the Geonosis arena battle is the source of your ire. The problem with the Force is that the Jedi do not use it as an offensive weapon, and fundamentally it doesn't really have any practical combat applications, nor should it. So the lightsaber ends up being the fallback because it actually works practically within the physical realm. The Force is a power beyond power but should not be treated(by Jedi anyway) as real, physical, combative power. I'd like to see more feats with the Force, so long as they're cohesive with the Force as we know it, but pushing it for the sake of momentary wonder at the expense of narrative sequence would have arguably been much worse. Which is exactly why the portrayal of the Force in The Force Unleashed is so unpopular.
