>Kerascoet & Hubert

Every time I try and recommend their work to people I know I get the same reaction.
If it's a girl they go, "This makes me uncomfortable, I don't want to read anymore. Oh my god, (girl) got raped. I can't. I just can't even."
If it's a guy they go, "Jesus, this is fucked up man. Why do you read this stuff?"

The only people I can actually discuss this with are my two best friends and my dad, whom we all agree that this shit is fucked up but can hold discussion on WHY it's fucked up. No pussy-footing around being out of our comfort zones and talking about how shitty the world and people can be. That and we all agree that the artwork accentuates the horror with just the little details.

>tl;dr I love these comics and don't get why more people choose not to read them
>>
>>85076512

Most people don't want to read things that leave them feeling unhappy.

If they do read it anyway, they want to at least be able to pull something out of it. Some lesson or silver lining.

>>
>>85076512
It just depends. Some of my female friends will definitely find these empowering because Coddie eventually took matter into her own hand, it's great character development, such and such. And not to mention that the story telling is great and the art is gorgeous.
>>
>>85076548
This so fucking hard. My girlfriend works in a movie theatre, and some fat boomer came out of Birdman one day and said "I DONT GO TO THE MOVIES TO BE UNHAPPY!"

Why the fuck are people so afraid of varied emotions? This is what happens when you deprive yourself of artistic exposure you're whole life.
>>
>>85076895
Well a lot of people go to movies and take in media looking for escapism. They have lives where they are unhappy with one aspect or another and they say "hey in this movie I can pretend I'm Batman and he can punch my depressing job in the face" so when they see something that ISN'T that they aren't taken away from their lives. So I get it, I don't agree with it but I mean it's a personal thing.

In the middle age, having curves and fat meant you had enough to eat and were wealthy.
Nowadays, poor quality products being full of fat and salt, having curves and fat means you can only afford cheap food and/or that you eat too much.

Beauty is always linked with quality of life.
>>
>>85076895
I think it's accentuated in the US where children's books are carefully striped of negative emotions.

I just came out depression, still recovering over concepts like death, ageing, time, meaning of the universe, you know the usual. After all that I honestly can't say these comics are that negative, it's just that some people feel okay or even happy looking at content that would upset another. These comics are definitely that kind of example. It is tackling morbid things that people tend to avoid thinking about, so I can see why this isn't everyone's cup of tea.
>>
>>85074755
I assumed it meant that Coddie and Mab had passed away, so the spell had broken. She is not the most beautiful girl in the world anymore. People are not enchanted by her anymore.

I wagered it was more because it was just a picture.
The Artist killed himself because he couldn't recreate her beauty.
People only work into a frenzy in her presence meaning it's not quite the same in a drawing.
So the drawing doesn't have the glamour.
>>
>>85106971
I dunno. The picture was enough to bring all the knights in the realm to her door.

And if the spell made her into your ideal of beauty, the King's Adviser would have seen her as a man.

I know I'm very very far from the text, but I might argue that she became the fae's ideal of beauty and the fae's influence on the region has made their ideal into the region's ideal.

Otherwise, its probably something much more simple: the Emperor likes that juicy double.
>>
>>85108038
No what brought them to the door was "see for yourself" , they were all fine and civil until they saw her for real.

Poor Peter though. Beauty was an idiot but at least she developed further.
>>
Hopefully homo grandpa found himself happiness between some big young pecs.
>>
>>85092958
Yeah, she really wasn't that bad. If there's one thing I admire about what I've read from these guys now, it's that you really have no idea who'll die, and more often than not those deaths aren't fufilling - just like in real life.

>>85106971
I reread the epilogue again - they menton twice that Coddie/Beauty had "retured from the world," so I think that was what must have made the spell no longer have any effect. Note how the man in unfazed as well.

>>85116823
I'm so glad that Otto lived though, I totally thought he was going to bite it, so I was pleasantly surprised. When he got with Beauty I was afraid he'd turn out to be a dick, but I liked that he wasn't and instead Mab convinced Beauty to be an asshole instead. And then he became a badass.

>>85106420
Claudine is definitely best girl, though I did like Coddie again when she finally realised what she was falling into. But ClaudinexOtto is the cutest.

>>85112889
I agree. I saw one reviewer say something like "this is more violent and sexual than your usual fairy tale" and I was like ... did you only know the Disney versions? Old fairy tales were plenty fucked up and this felt right in place.

>>85108038
>>85117219
Huh, I'd forgotten about the Boar King's advisor. That was kind of an abandoned thread. I had imagined that he would end up helping Beauty get away from him and got together with the king, but that was before the whole tower thing happened and the Boar King went even more nuts.

And when I started reading I assumed that (not knowing how long the story was going to be) Beauty would've broken the spell when she was at the height of her power, realising Mab's plotting. Everyone would abandon Coddie again, except for Peter, and Coddie would realise he was there all along for her even before she was enchanted. Happy couple, the end.

Fuck I'm cheesy.

Thinking about it this would be pretty cool if directed by Satoshi Kon. Rest in Peace...
>>
>>85126743
Satoshi Kon was great but I can't imagine a European fairy tale in his artstyle.

And then there would be the issue of "would the glamour affect Coddie/Beauty's voice, too?"

It works best as a comic, in this style. Not every comic needs to be adapted into a show/movie.

>>85126611
No. If it were more realistic it would probably come off as edgy. The expressions are remarkably relatable, whether they're exaggerated or subtle. This art is full of soul and the story is told beautifully. I'd say it's perfect the way it is.

Not just that. In the middle age, you had to work all day and night on the farm or hunting, only so you had enough food to not die.

That was hard physical work, so the only fat people around were lords and royalty who had to do less work.

Today, you can get away with literally zero physical work other than getting on the bus to get you into the office, and still make enough money to go by; combine this with unhealthy fast food, and you have tons of fat slobs.

I understand the knee-jerk reaction people have towards media that has rape or taboo topics in them but I find myself gravitating towards them for some reason.I feel that whenever I shy away from a it due to minimal discomfort, I am ignoring the some unfortunate soul's reality. I feel that I do them a dishonor to be squeamish. Am I alone in that sentiment?
>>
>>85142957
I understand your sentiment, though I don't entirely share it. One of the problems with people wanting less/no depictions of actions like rape, which usually comes from a well meaning place, is an erasure of experience and true-to-life events.

I'm personally sick of some critics acting as if depicting this stuff is either some kind of endorsement or just being done out of cynical exploitation, to generate interest through shock.
>>
>>85079161
I think this is a problem with all of children's media. And as a result children are tricked into thinking that they should always be happy. If they had more role models who tackle more complex emotions, it could provide kids with the tools to do the same.
