The dialogue is ok, I guess. At the same time, your word balloons are blurry and look lazily resized. The text looks either resized, or anti aliased. The art, word balloons, text don't really mesh together at all.

The art seems sloppy, rushed, and amateurish. At least 80% of the panels are neck-up 3/4 shots, which is boring. When you're trying other shots/angles/etc they're not terrible (but not great) but I'd recommend some more variety, just for interest's sake.

I only read whatever chapter is on the main page that the link goes to. I didn't even realize the spiky haired character was a female until the end when she took off her shirt.

I keep meaning to make sure that my designs are good by putting them through multiple renditions but always end up just going with what is more-or-less the first thing that came to my mind.
It's probably because I didn't think to actually design them until a day ago. I guess it still looks kinda cool reguardless.

I remember making a design like a year ago that just had them being pure white glowing figures, which was kind of cool
i think ill go with the less goofy route

>>84239635
boars are always good! cute green-eyed auburn-haired lasses in green are also always good.
The only thing that aint great is the difficulty in establishing where the camera's facing. like, the tree he's coming out from behind is identical to the tree she's in front of, but one assumes... not the same tree. not unless it's horseshoe-shaped. and the sky and background are giving no help with that either (though i'm one to talk, i still haven't wrapped my head around the idea that the sky isn't uniform at all times and that it should be different shades in different shots to indicate direction, not time passing)
>>
>>84239635
it looks pretty good so far! a random coloring tip that's been repeated here is try turning your image black and white and see if it still works- colors that are the same darkness but different colors are harder to read cause there's less contrast than you might think
>>
>>84239773
It's the same tree. The tree is big and irregularly shaped. I'm glad you said it was a boar, I showed it to someone else and they had no idea what it was. I can chalk it up to them not knowing what a boar was. I'll try to fix my angles, so the reader can see the positions. Thanks.

>>84239785
Thanks. I'll keep that in mind when coloring.

>>84240323
I like this so much more than the Sisters. I hate the Sisters, in fact. Because the worldbuilding seems lazy even for urban fantasy, and body horror is a joke, and there's too much dialogue, and the way you update it in "scenes" instead of page by page makes it feel like you didn't structure it like a comic at all but a screenplay and the artist had to shoulder the burden of adapting it to comic form, and the characters often look grotesque and not in a way that is intentional, and the dialogue often contains words and phrases that real people don't say. But this comic is really nice. It's interesting and fresh and the artist's visual style works well for it.

And I like dog costume guy.

because you know how everyone in the world talks, right? even east coast trash
and yeah theyre grotesque but i'm prettty sure that's intentional. because they're exaggerations of features i see on real people all the time. gross people that take the bus.

i do really like your expressions, but i feel like your attempts to be painterly on skeleton guy's face are just distracting and feel kinda muddy. I feel like you have some value problems there, though the scene is in a dark, rather monochrome place so that might be why. the smoke could use some better blending too imo. I do like your character though.

False, all who post here are doomed.
>>
>>84242367
value issues are when you have too many colors that are the same or too close in darkness. so if it works in black in white it works in color.

your first panel his face's tones feel smudgy, your highlights on his face dont feel like highlights- they feel like stray brushstrokes. and while he's supposed to be all mottled and corpse-y it feels strange.

I dig the tones thing, but outlining the areas to be shaded is a very strange look.. now that's an opinion, but more objectively, the 2nd panel is a mess of facial recognition, I can't see where her face is meant to be, all I can see is the under-chin shading looking like a scritchy beard
>>
>>84235424
Yeah, I started shading eyes recently as well, generally when the "camera" is closer to the characters, but it really makes them look nicer.
I just noticed the MM artist does some the same thing I do where only girls get highlights in their hair and guys don't.

Hey, I really liked it! I feel like you do action really well. However, your art has some problems. your tones get too samey and it feels like you're relying on tone and some messy hatching rather than just using solid blacks in places where it'd be appropriate.

As far as plot and flow go, it seems to be going pretty well. I understand what's going on. your most recent page has some bad spacing errors and im not sure how successful those dot tones are but. you do action really well and I'm kind of holding out for that. Is this your first comic? its pretty solid, all things considered.

Learn to draw figures. There is no shortcut. The internet is full of resources. There is bound to be something that suits your learning style.
For me books, the gesture drawing site links in the OP; demonic compulsiveness, and honestly, being trapped inside all winter with a broken right leg helped me build a base.

The books I used (use) were Vilppu- Drawing Manual; Loomis- Figure Drawing for All it's Worth; Bridgeman: 100 Hands; Strutural Anatomy.
And by used, I mean I drew every muscle chart and excercise in all of them- most of them way more than one time (I have many newsprint pads full of anatomy/muscle charts. Bridgeman is what I draw now when I need to focus or warm up. I fucking love Bridgeman.
Anyway it won't learn itself.

That's probably not what you wanted to hear.

I've said it in the last thread and I'll say it again: those are the most interesting character designs I've seen in /hyw/ and really nice lines too.
Any chance you could post some more? Or a 'mothman' doodle?
Thanks in advance!

Except, you know, those who can actually draw like >>84237366, Mimi, some of the hiveworks guys and of course those who just do it for fun.
>>
>>84240004
It's interesting. Although the premise is a little bit cliche it was a good read. Keep working on your art (it's allready prett good for a webcomic but it looks like there's a lot of potential). Your paneling is good, keep it up. Also I'd recommend you to read comics / manga with a similar setting like desert punk, Alita and fist of the north star for refference.

The plot hole joke looks like it could have been really funny but doesn't work because that's not what a 'plot hole' is, technically speaking, it's a plot device - an object of event inserted into the story to force a new development.

but the part that bothers me the most about your drawing is actually not you anatomy, your colors are terrible dude you have no idea of how to shade stuff and there are even some little white spaces

after you finish improving your anatomy please watch this video it will teach you how to properly use your color wheel and basic color theory

I genuinely like Socks. She's a sweetheart and has a good comic on her hands; But she needs to work on her PR.
I understand how frustrating the constant suggestions/critique can be - You can't be all things to all people - But it's just a part of being a public creator. A huge part. You have to learn to reply with a little grace instead of snapping at people.

Always do this, plan out the entire story before you begin, or you'll write yourself into a corner.

A good example of a comic that is planned out is Sakana

http://www.sakana-comic.com/

revelations about a character most of the way through justify a whole reread of all his scenes, it changes how he's interpreted entirely. without preplanning this kind of stuff is impossible.
>>
>>84250353
No not like that, it's like for the smaller things

Like I know exactly how my story is gonna pull through, but I need exact things to happen between those things and reasons for all of it to happen
>>
>>84250373
ideally you should write the whole comic with stick figures before you start the actual drawing. ideally. if you have a whole arc. comics are just books with pictures really.
>>
>>84250411
I've written the entire thing in my hear basically, which is probably my problem
Like I know what im gonna do every panel, its just that I also want to make sure the comic isn't just like 20 pages long, because I could easily sum up the whole story within 20 pages

And yeah I do actually draft out every page before I do it, but are you talking about drafting out the entire arc beforehand? I could do that too if it really helps that much
>>
>>84250353

Pic related, yes

Got a few under the bag I wouldn't found other way, so yes again

>Are we having these threads too often / what could be improved?
Less shitposting like this probably would help, but since it's all up to each individual poster, I don't think it will happen, so I just shrug it off.
The good still surpasses the shit, and people have tried to shit as much as they could, so I still think it'll be fine.

There's always the option to leave the threads again if they get worse, I sure did that for a while before.

They're great! They can be very helpful and have helped me out a bunch!

I'm a writer, but as far as writing help goes I've definitely gotten a good little bit from these threads. Motivation, no. I've always had plenty of motivation inside of me.

Carrion Girls, Green Knight, and Monsterous Mimi, and yes. I check all three outside of /hyw/ and I'm glad /hyw/ exists because I doubt I would have discovered any of them otherwise.

Such is true suffering. Have you succeeded in finding an artist to team up with? I have shelves upon shelves of both finished scripts and concepts amassed over the years but despite my best efforts never found an artist.

Occasionally someone in these thread (mostly beginners) will ask where to find artists but it always seems to come down to:

>What's your general opinion /hyw/ threads?

Very positive. Some threads are slow but that's bound to happen; overall they're great for starting artists to bounce character designs or ideas back and forth. As well as to get general comments on how to improve one's art; what they're less good at is on more story-specific criticism, but that's hard to do in an anonymous message board.

>Did it help you with your art / to get motivation?

Most definitely. I've improved tremendously since I started largely thanks to them and it's nice to have a second opinion whenever I finish a page in case I miss something. Pic related is a good example of page which was MUCH improved thanks to a comment here. Plus, it definitely DOES get you motivated when you see what other anons are able to do; motivated to make something that is perhaps AS good in it's own way.

>Did you pick up any other anons webcomic? Are you still reading them?

I did; I'm actually genuinely surprised at the quality of some of the comics here. There's a couple I enjoy more than comics which get regular threads on /co/.
I really did not expect a rather minor board on 4chan to have people this skilled.

>Are we having these threads too often / what could be improved?

I think it's good to always have one on in case people need help. As far as what could be improved; we tried a bunch of things but everything gets old after a while: Thread Webcomics got some discussion going but people weren't too interested. Thread Topics were a step up but again, we eventually ran out of interesting topic to talk about. Thread Activities/Challenges were the best, but obviously we're run out of interesting activities eventually
Perhaps is it's better to let the discussion play itself, but I do miss Thread Activities
I think an image list of (long running) /co/ webcomics separated by genre would be nice; but that might be too much of a challenge since many go on and off and some posters just drop by for a few pages.

Judging by the length, it seems to be more of a glaive. Bardiches from what I've seen have a much shorter pole, while glaives have long poles, but with a similar axe head.

This thing?
Yeah, it's definitely a bardiche. Souls is a great series, but they really can't into polearm terminology, like the black knight "halberd" from DaS 1 (actually a glaive) or the winged knight "halberd" from DaS 3 (actually a voulge). The in-game description of this calls it both a halberd and a scythe, too.

It'd be interesting to pick ones that are interactive, non-art based, or integrate whatever you're already working on.

So for posting/writing ones:
"OP will anonymously crit any who ask," "Review the comic of someone who has posted today," "Speculate about where a comic you read might be going."

For integrated/low art burden stuff:
"Show us your model sheets. Or make one to show." "Roughly map the setting of your current chapter." "Share, borrow, and crit pallets." "Share and crit silhouettes of characters you haven't introduced." "Show us old thumbs." "Share emptied panel grids."

We used to have pages of peoples' comics in the OP. Different comics every week. People got a lot of feedback and interest from that. Conversation was more focused on actual comics. It was nice. The big read stamp doesn't really do much for the OP.

Also, if thread activities are intermittent, a different OP pic would be an easy way to highlight that today's an activity day.
>>
>>84250903
>What's your general opinion /hyw/ threads?
When they began way back when, neutral/positive. Negative now.

>Did it help you with your art / to get motivation?
It's motivating to work alongside other people who are also working on things. No help with my art, though, as I rarely ever receive comments or critique. But I learn from what is said about others' work occasionally.

>Did you pick up any other anons webcomic? Are you still reading them?
A few, yes, and it's those same few that always get named by others.

>Are we having these threads too often / what could be improved?
Less threads less often, maybe bring back activities, I'm not sure. I genuinely don't want to be associated with these threads anymore because the caliber of dialogue and artwork being posted has, for the most part, gone down. I'm slowly phasing out posting here at all because, as another anon said, any peers I've found here I've established outside connections with by now.

It used to not be such a "graduate" system. There was a range of skill levels, then at some point people became convinced that once you hit a certain level that you were "too good" to post here and that continuing to do so was a testament to how bad your comic "actually" is. As a result, most of the professional - or nearly professional - comics have disappeared from these threads.

Today at least it comes from a place of wondering what can be done about it. I can get back to critting people more often if it'll bring things closer to how they've been. The far background elements don't seem to have consistent perspective with the foreground.

Check the line on that column next to the stuff right next to it. Also the ball is sort of "above" us but it seems like we see a lot of its front and not a lot of its bottom.

The teetering mass on the right is probably fine, since we don't have as many nearby cues showing it to be wrong. But the screens on it have parallel vertical lines even though they recede vertically.

Also, purple hazy background is okay, but something light green and desaturated might have been cooler. Upper reds and blues would contrast better with that than with the nearby purple hue. And letting stuff be a lighter value where the haze is thicker at the bottom would have separated the foreground from the background, and made those dark antennas and stuff stand out more.

Finally, just check your values and perspective in general. I've probably missed other places that could use some work.

What's your general opinion /hyw/ threads?

Overhwlmingly positive.
These threads are as useful as the individual poster makes them.

Did it help you with your art / to get motivation?
Not just yes, but fuck yes. I was always motivatd to draw, but these threads helped me improve and channel that motivation in a better direction.

Did you pick up any other anons webcomic? Are you still reading them?
Yes.
Are we having these threads too often / what could be improved?
The worst part of the threads quite honestly aside from the endless middle-school shitposting, is the variance in expectations as to its premise and purpose.
Also, Ive found it is a good idea to limit how much time one spends here.

the main differences I'm noticing are the cape and the hair. the first two have the hair closer to how I originally drew it (though the bottom bits stuck up higher) which I definitely still like, and makes her more distinct from the others. the cape.. i don't think she would wear a high-collared dr strange cape, so I'd go with the 2nd one. which you have marked as 'original'
that said you should probably keep the spider legs like they are in redux2, they're simpler and easier to draw, and more realistic really.

You missed the point dude, I was asking for input about the music I linked. I appreciate the critique on the image itself but I can't justify redrawing it to that extent since it will only be used in the background of an animation for 10 seconds max and wont even be viewed in it's entirety, just in small segments (the image is so long vertically because the camera will pan down it) it was also my first practice with perspective, I'm working on another background currently I'll try and do better with since it will be far more prominent but right now I'm mainly worried about making sure the music sounds fitting. I will try and use green instead of purple though, I do appreciate the input, just not for that specific piece right now.

Alright.

I'm generally not a fan of applying "camera" effects like the blurring of the sun in comics that rely on thick lines and simple shapes and stuff. It's okay here, but might work better if the outer lines on the sun weren't black? Maybe use orange lines in that frame? I'm not sure. Just decide if you agree with me and fuck around with it if you do.

The design of the foreground character seems like it's waffling between being geometric and organic and I don't know that that's really working. Especially on the... I guess it's a fuse. Or where the arms meet the body.

The gradient on the foreground character is a little baffling and makes some of your linework near invisible, depending on the brightness of my screen.

I'm not sure why the coronal blobs have shadows instead of outlines. And the cloud shapes are bizarre. The weird concavity that they all have (and I'm seeing now that they're all the same cloud) doesn't look very cloud like.

I'm not really sure you've thought about the values in your comic in general. For example panel 2 has this weird dim background for seemingly no reason.

The text boxes are a good call. The tapering corners of the panels are interesting, but I'm not a fan of having that thick inner cross and those thin outer borders.

Oh, and didn't laugh at the gag. I'm probably not the go to guy for gags though.

That's true, nice quads.

The art is really bad. The gradient is unappealing, the color values are poorly chosen, the style itself is unappealing (even for a cartoony amateur webcomic), the character design is unappealing, the font /dialogue boxes are unappealing.

The whole thing is just not that good, but not that bad either. The joke was entertaining.

It's really important to the sorts of people who concern themselves with tangents and the crossbars on capital Is and such
those of us paying more attention to things like perspective and proportion don't give any fucks.

That said, yeah you should always try not to be confusing. If their positions are particularly important, and if the background is samey, then try to put some thought into that.
Still, even live action productions have people randomly switch places and it never bothers anyone
>>
>>84256652

In film, a character can physically cross the frame or a scene can change. In comics, panel layouts and page shifts can sometimes excuse changing the position of a character in the frame as well.

Gimme a thumbnail or something and I can give more specific advice, though.

No amount of technical drawing skill really excuses garbage paneling, balloon placement, cinematography, or pacing.
>>

>It's really important to the sorts of people who concern themselves with tangents and the crossbars on capital Is and such

The rules for this are simple as fuck though.

You're probably a person who gets confused at when to use "to" and "too."
>>
>>84259471

>anyone who doesn't do what i tell them must be too stupid to do it!
i bet you don't end sentences in prepositions
>>
>>84259496
Except that those things are technical issues in your art if you are making comics. Anything that renders your comic less readable is fucking important.

Never mind the absurdity of reserving starting one skill for after you've mastered another. Or the fact that applying simple guidelines to panel/object placements requires very little actual time and won't detract from your studies almost at all.

>>
>>84259600
If you break the fold on a webcomic with your panel sequence all the time, people are going to fucking notice how often they scroll up. A lot more frequently than perspective errors.

In fact you can cheat perspective pretty heavily and people will give no fucks as long as most of what you're drawing consists of organic shapes. Also many of the most read comics have horrible perspective. Heads almost universally lack a lower plane for example. It bothers me to no end because I'm one of those assholes who goes to life drawing classes years after graduating from art school, but no one else cares.
>>
>>84259693
>break the fold
the fuck is that? yet another made up rule?
>>
>>84259710
The fold is the line between stuff you have to scroll down for and the stuff you don't online. It's a term borrowed from newspaper printing where there was an actual fold.

So if you have a tall comic and the left side has one long pillar panel with dialogue at the top and bottom, and the right side is panels scrolling down, the reader will scroll down, up, and down again to read it. Something similar happens a few times early on in Guilded Age IIRC.
>>
>>84259710
>>84259754
I was going to berate you for not googling it, but I'm finding the term more obscure than I realized. For whatever that's worth.
>>
>>84259754
ohhhh yeah i'm with you there m8. that is definitely something to avoid.
hell i think whether or not you have to scroll down (which is, of course, highly dependent on the individual user's browser and resolution and size settings and shit), it's still bad in general having one long pillar panel with dialogue at the top and bottom.. and in general, pillars shouldn't have more than two panels next to them. if even that.
>>
>>84259785
yeah i did google it and i couldnt find anything.
>>
>>84259600
Just because people who haven't practiced paying attention don't notice doesn't mean it doesn't influence them.

Just like an unclear sequence of panels, fucking up stuff like tangents and the 180 rule won't necessarily make your comic instantly unreadable, but it will make it more unpleasant and janky because the reader has to take extra time to decipher what's going on.
The moment it takes to reorient yourself and re-establish where characters are in the shot, or to go "hey, that shape is part of a totally different character than I first thought" breaks the pacing you intended for the page to have and brings the reader out of the experience.
>>
>>84259807
Yeah. And at first, paneling and cinematography can be learned in very easy tips and rules like that. Basic competency doesn't require nearly as much grinding as art, so "giving no fucks" about those little things when you encounter them just because your perspective is bad (or whatever) really doesn't make any sense to me.
>>
>>84259870
I feel that those things CAN be confusing, but I don't think they are automatically. They should be involved in troubleshooting only when a problem has been detected, not something to avoid on principle.
>>84259874
perhaps I exaggerated

>>
>>84259892
These are problems that the creator is in a uniquely bad position to identify because they are problems with conveying the creator's intent to the reader. 99 times out of 100, tangents and breaking the 180 line add nothing to a sequence, so why have them? Well, I can't see much on both your examples, all you have is sketches? Don't you ever finish a drawing?

In any case, they look fine for what they are, in this last sketch, anatomy is fine, gesture is interesting, placement of the facial features look good, the lighting looks interesting... And on the previous illustration, well, all I can say is that you look more comfortable working with colors than I do, and I have an on going comic with a few pages (it is black and white, but it has more to do with my speed than anything). The market is full of badly drawn webcomics, without seeing a finished drawing of yours I'd guess you are miles ahead of the competition. Specially since you have some sort of self awareness and criticism the other "artists" lack.
I also have these sort of panics, thinking that my art isn't good enough, Anon, and I don't think it ever gets better, what I do to feel a little better is to compare my work with comics that have a good following that I find shitty, with people loving the art and writing... You will still know your art isn't the level you want it to be, but at least it's better than "that", and people think "that" is great.

Just start working, Anon. Eventually you will get better, you may cringe a little at your earlier work, I know I cringe a little to mine, but in the end you will still feel good because you have something done, and your improvement is palpable for once.
Also, it helps if you know the writer a little before jumping into a long comic, I was lucky to have a friend who wanted to write comics, but meeting writers on the internet, you may want to do little short stories just to get a feel for who they are and how is their work, before committing years of your life on a story you don't like, with a person you don't really care about because for whatever reason you don't want to drop their comics.

To the anons that helped me a week and half back, thank you. It really was true that once you start a comic, you get faster at drawing. Yesterday I was able to draw and ink a whole page in 8 hours more or less.

Now that I've got my tablet back, I'm trying to paint a few pages, just to figure out how I'm going to give colour to the whole thing. It's a fancomic that aims to go nowhere, so I'll go easy. I think almost plain colours (with my work with pencil for the gradients) will do it. I don't know what I'm really doing, but I kind of like it. It's fun just doing stuff out of worries about screwing my work.

His eyes feel a little too detailed compared to how simple the rest of his design is.
I think his colors would look nicer if you changed the tints a little, as right now his colors feel very flat. Maybe change the grey to a blue grey or green grey, maybe make the red a little purple or orange, the colors are so pure they feel boring.

Have any of you ever gotten over halfway through thumbs and into your pencils when you realized your story just doesn't make any goddamned sense?

I honestly just want to scrap the whole thing and give up right now because there's so many inconsistencies and plot holes in my shit that I don't even know if it's salvageable. I've been picking at and tweaking this story for years and just now I think I'm realizing it's hot garbage. Like, bad, bad, bad.

My choices are obviously to rework the story as much as possible to have it make sense, or give it up completely. I'm wanting to to the latter and just quit but there's enough people in my fan/followerbase that have expressed excitement about this story for years that I can't. But I'm afraid that, if I do the former, I fear it will end up unrecognizable from the original and I'll end up hating it.

Quick question for you ladies and gents. Just when did you start drawing seriously? And how long after did you start your webcomic?
>>
>>84254202
I like the clouds, ground not so much. Is this from a reference?
>>84255320
This is a neat value study, though it definitely looks like the flashlight isn't the only light source.

>>84265514
You know how there's this level of jokes where you know that there's a joke, and not a bad one, but it doesn't force out even a chuckle out of you? That's the level your page is at. Also you could benefit from not making readers look at the second panel first.

>>84265728
You have the effects of the older superhero comics down pretty well I think, not that I'm an expert on that. On the other hand, drawing women in skin-tight outfits only works when your anatomy is up to par. If it's not, the whole thing won't look very appealing. I mean, why give a skin-tight suit if the appeal doesn't work? Think about it.

>>84267170
I'm not sure if you should use the pencil scan as a visible layer on the finished page. It creates an interesting effect of adding some dirtiness and it somehow works with the effects used on the things outside the window, but I don't think it'll do you favours in the long run.

>>84270051
>accept my critique for I am the omniscient art diety!

>>84270651
Some comics just skip on the unimportant conversation in favor of narration. You could have this done in one panel and one or two of those yellow narration boxes. Manga by default have conversations look completely uninteresting and if you plan to do it the chinese cartoon way, you'll either accept that your conversations will look boring or you'll cut the dialogue as much as possible and what remains will be boring anyway. Your page isn't bad at all to be honest, I've seen way worse in published works.
>>
>>84272077

>>
>>84272237
I guess that would be around late 2014, then, a couple months after starting Carrion Girls. Previous to that I'd spent twelve years or so doing art in a non-serious manner, thinking about how nice it would be to do a comic, but never being serious about it.

I've got a ten-page story about a guy fighting a dragon and his own demons that I've been meaning to draw for a while but haven't gotten around to. Does that sound interesting? The script is in a state that wouldn't make any sense to anyone except me right now, but I could flesh it out for you.
>>
>>84272181
Seriously as in studying and practicing with intent to show great improvement.
>>
>>84271603
I feel the same way, I've been picking at my story for the longest time and I've finally started to write down the foundation for it, but I don't have any real ending in sight or an antagonist outside of the situational ones and a recurring dude who's kind of like an Italian Musashi.

I have hope though, in the time I need to polish my art skills I think I'll have worked things through.
>>
>>84272151
I've been drawing with the intent of making it my career since I was 14 or 15. I'm 22 now and have been drawing professionally (as in getting paid and having my name on publisher's books) for a little over a year now. I still haven't really started my webcomic, but I've had a lot of ideas in development.
>>
>>84271603
>this lighting won't make sense
>this setup won't make sense
>this angle is impossible to view from
>these panels don't flow at all
>an average reader won't be able to tell where this is going on
>the focus of these page should be shifted to something else
at this point I'm convinced thinking too much is bad for creative process
>>
>>84272530
I wish I could just sing a comic version of the MST3K mantra to myself and not worry about all my inconsistent plot holes. Honestly, I'm mostly worried about other people finding the plot holes too obvious to enjoy the story.

>>84272471
If you're doing a long-form story, you should be fine. I know plenty of people in my friend circles who started their webcomics with not a lot of planning, and ended up forming a lot of stuff later on in the comic's life. Mine's a short comic so I don't really have that excuse.
>>
>>84271603
From what I understand, that feeling is typical for writers to go through at about halfway to three quarters. In that situation you're exhausted from working on it for so long, but you aren't close enough to the finish line to have momentum carry you yet either.
Maybe your story is crap, maybe it isn't - either way, you're probably not in a situation to judge that accurately right now.

Finish your script, then work on something else for a few weeks to gain some emotional distance, then go back to your first draft of your original story and decide if it's really that bad or if it can be salvaged. That's what many novelists recommend.

>>84261584
>Don't you ever finish a drawing?
I very rarely attempt to finish a drawing because doing something new always reveals gaps and flaws in my ability and I feel like putting all the extra effort into finishing a less-than-perfect drawing would be better spent improving so I can make the 'real' drawing that perfectly captures the idea. I can admit that it's counterproductive since it trades one kind of development for another. As for the latter part of your post, I prefer shorter comics to begin with because I consider compressing narratives an art in itself. It's why I like film so much.

yeah, but it's easier to tell if someone is a good artist or not. It's hard for someone to be considered an artist if their work is clearly shit. Anon, in "fine arts" right now we have the best examples of how anyone can be an artist. You just need to shit on a canvas and have some millionaire sponsor your work. I could use works of Pollock, or that one 4 year old girl, or that one toilet with something written on the side to illustrate my point, but I like pic related. This is a painting of a brazilian artist that was sold recently for 1,4 million dollars. In Brazil we learn in art classes about this shit, and how awesome this artist's works are. I had to copy this painting once for a class in school, and as a kid I knew this looked horrible, I though I could do better than this, yet people continue to praise this.

Also, with the mainstream internet public, I'd guess it's way easier to make money drawing bad digital animu fanart, than drawing good pencil illustrations. I would agree it's easier to get work being a bad writer than a bad artist in general, though.

If you live in a SE Asian country that isn't Japan or Korea or China and you draw weeb shit it will be hugely popular regardless of quality because it's indigenous.
>>
>>84277811
Fine arts shouldn't really count. Market runs on giffen goods, rich people patronizing artists they like personally, and flat out money laundering. Stuff that looks weird from the outside is often done specifically in response to the bizarro logic of this setting.
>>
>>84277946
Japan, Korea and China don't qualify as SEA anyway, anon.

>night before a climactic battle
>Gwyn wakes up to a rustling in the night
>all the humans seem to be under a sleeping spell
>sees a long-nosed hag cutting open Richard and pulling out his organs
>her screaming make the hag drop Richard's innards all over
>and breaks the spell, waking Richard up
>turns out Skalmöld was going to stuff him full of straw as an invulnerability spell so he'd win his big fight like Odin had planned, then put his organs back the next night
>but now the originals are tainted and they need to find replacements before the spell runs out and he needs them back
>but where the hell do you find a frog heart that big in just nine days?

Not sure what Skeggöld would be doing. Maybe she'd get illusioned by Gwyn to look like Richard so she could take his place in the fight.

I had actually thought about it once.
Though the story involved Rich & Gwyn traveling around Fantasy-Scandinavia; Gwyn's supernatural senses make her notices Skeggold & Skalmold following Rich around.
Thinking she some sort of dumb Elf, they tell her to stay out of they way while they wait for Rich to die as fated.
Story involves Richard & Gwyn paranoically avoiding even the SLIGHTEST sign of danger, much the the Valkyrie's growing frustration.

Dunno where it would go from there though; guess it would depend of the Valkyries' rules for situations where their work is interrupted by a supernatural creature or when someone is told their fate.

[2/2] Spoiler'd for mild artistic nudity. Also, spent a bunch of time looking in to comics/movies/etc that hit on similar themes to make sure I'm honing in on my audience properly. spoilering only calls mod attention to the picture. but in this case nothing is showing so you're fine either way.
hey not to be a dick becaus you're under no obligation to listen to my critique, but.. did you hear my critique before? about the second panel being so hard to make out the face in and the neck shading looking distractingly like a beard?

Yeah, read it. Still not quite sure what to do there. Trying to give her a 'blank face'. No eyes or visible emotion, and cast heavily in shadow. Not sure how to punch that out without doing something like what I did there. Suggestions?

>>84292409
Thanks. Trying hard to get better.
>>
>>84292426
try leaving it straight up blank. the utter lack of anything, even shading, will make it all the more blanky.
alternatively just the jawline drawn in... go ahead and leave in the chin shading.. but make the face a uniform blank shaded-in spot (actually the way you have the eye-area shaded in the FIRST panel is how i see most 'shaded area instead of eyes blank anime face' things working, so I'd go with that, instead of those various swirly lines you have on her face there.. lemme see .. if i can do a little edit for ya..
