Shit starts happening again next week. Damn pacing for the sake of starting off a new story arc. Rewriting the next few issues because I miss the violence, but still trying to preserve cohesion.

i suppose cohesion is worth more than violence..

ohh I'm piecing this together now. He can channel the old leader so that makes him a good choice.. at least in the eyes of the others, whom they're trying to impress, while still kinda running things. in fact the 'puppet' line is kind of on point, he just wasn't quite aware of who was holding the strings when he said it.

I don't quite get what Jam means 'they were big books'.. meaning she expected more to be in them? Or is she talking about other books he didn't fetch? I feel like we're following up on an offpanel scene it would have been useful to see.

yeah. for a second I forgot Bea had mozzarella sticks and I thought it was stuffed crust pizza that was just miscolored in that panel, but noo.. he's eating it straight up crust first. Long-term, it's about a witch living during the American Civil War, split into disconnected short stories. Similar to Hellboy in storytelling style, I think.

This one in particular is about the witch coming to terms with the fact that she's living in the shadow of the witches of the medieval period, and with it the 'giant shadow' they cast.

yeah see, her eye placement looks a lot more right in those other examples. and the higher cranium too. I'd stick with those designs and try to keep more consistent. she looks just perfect in the lower left.
also not to put too fine a point on it, but i fucking love it when something is set in the past, but to them, it's the present, and they compare and contrast their present to a MORE distant past. That almost never happens. I also like the future equivalent, which happens even less often.. and even then usually in less satisfying ways (oh those laser cannons are like 50 years out of date, ours are three times as good!)

Yeah there was something of a two month-ish time skup from the end of the first story arc and the start of this one. Sammy's been the guy dealing with deciphering Scott's books. Which have been something of a background element since the end of the third issue. Jam tends to read them but doesn't seem to understand them because "Scott's a rambler."

Jam expected there to be cool stuff rather than generic universal spells. I mean, she can't even throw a fireball and that's right up there on the "what wizards ought to be able to do" list.

Things will pick up shortly, I might move an important spell to an earlier issue just because it adds some good tension. Honestly I think it'll all be better once we get more Craig-centric.

>>84181458
>Historical Witch Stuff
Check out "Escaping Salem" by Richard Godbeer if you can, it puts a really interesting look into the official law/legal process of witch trials aside from the fuck up in Salem and is really a very interesting read that might be of use to you.
>>
>>84181689
yeah that stuff is hella interesting. and from a scholarly point of view it's always neat to pin down how "yes, the popculture version of that is incorrect, but the real thing is still pretty weird, and it WAS different here in this famous instance than it was in other places"
>>
>>84181578
I'm just talking basic shit, like if my pages are the right size or if colors look off in print compared to my screen, just simple little shit. That's why I was hoping for cheap, but not so cheap that it falls apart or prints 1997-tier black and white jpeg.

>anyway the samples are free
But what if I get a sample that looks like shit and I want to try fixing something?
I doubt they'd let you keep ordering samples of shit over and over again while trying to fix mistakes or something, not to mention you're waiting days in-between.
>>

I love that sort of thing too. Historical fiction is my fucking jam, it's just a pain in the ass to write because of the amount of research required to be historically accurate.

>>84181689
That sounds phenomenal, actually. Like I mentioned above any resources are helpful.

>>84181898
Pages need to be massive to hit the minimum 300dpi limit, which means several thousand pixels large. Takes up a bit more storage space than I'd like but the potential for print is worth it, I think.
>>
>>84181752
yeah i hear you, it's a novel idea.
in the meantime i can tell you to change your comic to cmyk mode if you wanna see what it'll look like printed (granted your monitor still won't tell you perfectly, but any printer will at least tell you the colors even if it's low-quality, because that's about the ink), and similarly check your DPI and what the size is given in inches to understand how big it'll be printed. those two things you can test virtually and on any cheap printer..
also i have seen lots of modern printers that can use that high quality glossy paper, so maybe look for that.
>>
>>84181829
yeah what... what word DO we use to describe our non-comic work that's meant to stand alone as a larger, more detailed piece? I feel like I need to talk about that a lot
>>84181898
i mean, that's your final size for web, but surely your original file is bigger, right? unless you're doing pixel art no way are you drawing on that small a canvas
and whatever the printing standard may be, the fact is you really don't need to be that high. higher than 72, yeah, but..
>>
>>84181947
not only that but of course buttoning yourself down to accuracy always takes a little of the fun out (though going by her clothing obviously you aren't too married to it. or else witches just happen to be rocking clothes like that in the 19th century as their equivalent of black robes and pointy wide brimmed hats)
and then history keeps changing all the time.. but it's still fun using it as a guideline and filling in the many blanks yourself.

>>
>>84181970
>i mean, that's your final size for web, but surely your original file is bigger, right? unless you're doing pixel art no way are you drawing on that small a canvas
I really didn't know it was so weird.
Like I said, my pages are all 800x1000, which I thought was fairly large.
I draw in Flash and my art and colors are all pretty flat, maybe that has something to do with it.
I didn't even know what dpi was until lurking here and seeing it mentioned in printing discussions at some point. I always just went by image dimensions.
>>
>>84182172
>i draw in flash
no worries man, you saved the original flash files, right? that shit is vector. you can make it any size you want, instantly.
>I always just went by image dimensions.
and you really still can, you just have to remember those dimensions are 2100x3150. if you want to remember them as 7x10.5 inches at 300 dpi, that's fine too.
>>
>>84182241
Oh god but my stories run hundreds of pages, the thought of doing alternate sizes for all of it both in flash and in the actual pages sounds like way too much to be worth it.
>>
>>84182263
printing is a pretty heavy endeavor. you might be able to find a batch-saving / batch-resizing program to do the doity woik for you. I used one once, but that was making things SMALLER so that's a different story. but i'm sure people who work in flash must have a decade and a half of tricks and quirks and there must be someone SOMEWHERE who's got a little script that you can feed in "take all the flash files here and batch-convert them all to 3150 px"

I'm having a hard time with this big panel. It's supposed to show the main character nearly escaping being hit by the truck, but I think the perspective makes her look a little too big, even though she's supposed to be a little closer in the foreground.

I don't know. This panel's weak. Any crit or advice would really be appreciated! I don't mind redrawing this panel.
>>
>>84181970
>yeah what... what word DO we use to describe our non-comic work that's meant to stand alone as a larger, more detailed piece?

An illustration?
>>
>>84182739
If she where a bit more to the right it would look better.
>>
>>84182739
the point is gotten across, however it looks like she was about 10 feet away from getting hit, not actually in any danger.
>>84182763
yeah that'll work i suppose. but to me illustration means drawings done to share the job of telling a story, with writing doing the rest of the job.
>>
>>84182849
I'll fudge it around and see if that helps.

>>84182915
Yeah, that's what I'm worried about, I want there to be some danger there.

Hmm. I don't necessarily agree with your description. Illustration can be sequential, but that doesn't mean they always are, or that they always really need to tell a story. Sometimes they're just standalone drawings, I guess?
>>
>>84182739
I think it might be a little more apparent if in one panel you actually showed her in front of the truck, rather than just to its side.
>>
>>84182954
semantics is always a kick in the earlobes, but if an illustration isn't what i've said, then... what does it illustrate?
I guess I should be slightly less specific, as you could also call the diagrams in an instruction manual ilustrations, or the drawings people used to do for natural guides to things before photographs were invented. but basically an illustration is supposed to represent something. hence illustrate.
whereas if i just drew a cool robot because i felt like it, I don't know what to call that, and how to say "this isn't how I draw in my comic, it's how i draw for ___s"
>>
>>84182959
That's a smarter idea, and probably a more interesting angle to look at. Do you think just the one panel would be more effective or should I split the moment into two?

>>84183020
A doodle? A sketch? A mountains? A sky? A windmill?

I would personally call a drawing I did for shits and giggles either a drawing, a doodle, a sketch or an illo depending on how detailed or rendered I made it.
>>
>>84183064
yeah i usually want to say like 'a piece' if it's meant to be a standalone work of art appreciated as a picture. (or more often, as a design for a greater franchise i've made)
>>
>>84183064
I prefer the one on the left, but maybe try drawing her more to the left of the panel as if she had just seen the truck and the reader could make the connection more that she jumped back.
>>
>>84183112
That's smart! I think that's what I'll go with, thank you.

He's years ahead of me though, and I'm slowly realizing what I've been doing to make art is probably the dumbest thing I could be doing if I want to improve.

If I would beat him then that would require me starting all over in how I draw stuff, which would take years, and I'm slowly running out of time to practice this stuff because I'm already making a webcomic, and stopping it altogether to slowly rediscover how to art wouldn't do anyone any good

This nigga embraced how I draw stuff too and now because I believed what he said all these years I've basically dug myself a hole.

You're not wrong at all, and I already do regret starting it too early. I have no clue why I did either, I guess I thought I was ready. Honestly I believe my art is good enough to start a webcomic though. Its not me sucking that gets me mad, its that how I make my stuff makes sub-par art in twice the time as anyone else

Thanks though. I appreciate it. Made me feel a bit worse but a bit better too
>>
>>84183315
Forget him like he forgot you. Get on improving yourself and your art and the rest comes second.

If you truly care about your comic/art/skills you should focus on that by working on it, asking for advice and critique, acknowledging that it everything takes time and fuck the past.

Like the great Shia once said: "JUST DO IT".

oh sorry, I mistook you for someone else. You were actually serious.
We've got a lot of posters who deny progress has happened at all, for this or that person, instead of acknowledging the different rates of improvement and how best to ramp up that speed
>>
>>84183558
I believe my stuff is subpar at best. Like nothing that can get me a job as a graphic designer or anything but I can draw shitty memes for the internet, if you get what I mean.

I don't know if many people here would think my art is decent, but I have posted here before, people have said my stuff has a pretty good style to it all, which is basically like telling an autistic kid they are special in their own way so idk if I'm really that good or not

Montaillou: the Promised Land of Error is pretty good too. As is the Malleus Malefecarum. If you're into that sort of thing.

The first is about the Catholic church stamping out the last vestiges of the Cathar heresy, but it's especially about the village setting. It sort of gets into the local social networks in interesting ways. Apparently the priest and bayle were part of the same peasant family and they were simultaneously heretics and collaborators with the inquisition, using their power and position to confiscate rivals' land for themselves and such.

The second you've probably heard of, but on actually reading it it references weirder myths. Like witches being able to steal people's penises. Though this version insists it's an illusion. You can read elsewhere (I've forgotten where in particular) about birdnests full of penises that crawl around and are fed barley and stuff. It's wild.
>>
>>84186094
Thanks, anon! It's called Laughter In The Face Of Death, and it's about a girl who tries to avoid death by showing a grim reaper type character life on the plane of the living.

>>
>>84187732
I get what you mean from a comic storytelling angle, even if it would mean she would be flipping all over the page. >>
>>84187732
>>84187776

I would actually suggest flipping the close-ups at the top of the page instead. The truck panel and the panels after it are all from the same view, it's the top row that's confusing.

>>
>>84189372
It's what I'm used to. I've worked with vertical layouts before, but horizontal just let's me visualize my ideas better.

>>84189421
The problem is Tapastic, the site you use to host your comic, is really designed around vertical layout comics. You're not working with your host very well in regards to how you format things.
>>
>>84189620
Understandable, but I'm just more comfortable with horizontal layouts. A friend of mine is working on a website for my webcomic, so hopefully in the near future it won't be a problem.

Is it still readable? Even though it's cramped you can still tell what's happening, right?

>>84189813
IMO it's definitely legible, although I would suggest working on black/white or black/white/grey balance on your pages to push clarity a bit more.

So I'm working on writing out chapter two. I was thinking I'd split the characters up showing one character's perspective and then the other with no cutting back and forth. The actions of one will impact the other's story, and each half will help the reader understand the other, plus the crazy ending planned for both. Probably call it "prisoner's dilemma," since that's fairly apt.

Part of what I'm doing here though is introducing sort of an opposition faction for the crown. When the soldier entered a tournament under "a coward's name and guise" it was for one of these guys, if that's relevant. I'm kind of dry on ideas to make these guys interesting, and not just ersatz robin hood or generic guerillas. Like... those could feasibly be enough, but I want them to have more charm or texture or whatever.

Anybody got any good ideas for this kind of thing?

The premise of the current chapter is that the soldier and warlock are arrested for murdering the king. Sort of. There's some complicated shit as usual.

The opposition, for now, are ambushing the witch and her henchmen (the folks who did the arresting). They're looking to kidnap the queen (they think the queen is there), but weren't really counting on fighting a woman who can make shit explode with an insincere compliment.

The leader probably won't matter for a bit. He knows the soldier, but for now he's only going to interact with the warlock in the second half.
>>
>>84190772
Kinda tough to suggest something for a chapter that's already mostly planned out without knowing what sort of things you want the opposition to accomplish, or why the soldier was with them.

In a typical fantasy setting I'd think of something like a growing merchant class that wants more power, rival nobels who fund a rebellion, stuff like that - but your comic is pretty bizarre so that sort of thing does feel rather mundane by comparison.

If I remember correctly, the crown has some relationship with demons or the like, could that work as a jumping off point?
Alternatively, you could make them generic robin hood types but give them a very unexpected motivation, or odd tactics for achieving their goals and make them interesting that way.
>>
>>84191330
That's somewhat helpful, yeah. I figure the leader probably knows a little about the demonic stuff at least, but dumping that information into too many characters' hands is risky at this point.

A more mundane motivation for the foot soldiers would be helpful. Initially I sort of had them as disgruntled peasants. A sort of power vs power thing would be nice, but the best case scenario I'm searching for has a mix of the dregs of society in there. I feel as if the nobility has enough focus already to some extent.

Just being able to talk about this stuff is helping me get my thoughts together though.
>>
>>84191329
awesome. still don't know what you're asking from us
>>
>>84191496
Details. Fluff. I don't know. I think just asking I've got most of my thoughts together on it. With the exception that I'm still not clear on the motives of the rabble involved.
>>
>>84191400
In fantasy novels you usually have the disgruntled peasants as foot soldiers and the (secret) leaders of a rebellion as other powerful political figures, so it seems like an obvious thing would be to just turn that on its head and have the leader as an angry peasant who somehow managed to rally all sorts of important people behind him. Unfortunately, that would put a lot of focus on rich people again.

Fantasy settings with satirical elements often use some sort of beaurocratic thing to enrage the masses, like a really stupid tax or a new law that requires overly complicated paperwork required for everyday things.

If you really want the absolute dregs of society you could also go the route of including crime bosses and their various underlings (blind beggars, purse cutters, etc.).
>>
>>84191053
If you knew it'd make a difference, you'd delete your comic today.
>>
>>84191614
>leader is an angry peasant
I kind of like that, yeah.

Now that I think on it, maybe the crown is trying to stamp out Ish's cult. Some of the rabble are members, while others were just sort of dragged in by more generic complaints over property confiscation as part of the inquisition. It's a little on-the-nose similar to a book I'm reading, but it adds another layer of connection with the soldier (he stayed with family before he was sent to appease Ish).

Made a post here a couple of threads ago saying I was thinking about finally doing some productive with my comics habit and putting something together.

I've been drawing out ideas on paper, but today I ordered a wacom intuos and acquired Manga studio - most of the tutorials I can find for Manga studio are for doing specific things (eg. 'how to ink in Manga Studio') rather than a general overview of the software for someone new to producing digital art.

Anybody know of some particularly good tutorials?

Also, anything that explains things like what DPI I should be drawing at would be great too, since I don't really understand that.

>>

Ctrl+Paint has some decent tutorials that should be applicable to many programs.

ReMIND has a blog with some okay information on comic-making IIRC.

If you plan to print, figure out your page size and make the file 300 (or more) DPI. For the site, save a separate shrunken down version at whatever size (here you'll be thinking pixels rather than inches) you want to display at.
>>
>>84192851
300 DPI AND a large enough size (7 x 10.5 inches or whatever it is), if you're going for printing. we've already heard from someone in here who was working at 300DPI and like 2x3 inches

I still can't imagine how that worked...
>>
>>84192960
well that's 600x900.. yeah that's too small actually, I dunno how that would work.
I have all my shit set at the default 72 DPI because I don't care and don't plan to print, and it's an easy setting to tweak later, but I generally work in a 2000-something by 3000-something canvas for big works, and 1800xwhatever-it-takes (usually very very tall) for comics. which still isn't really big enough

Kind of weird to drop into the middle of this conversation- but I just don't have the time/energy/money right now to print out hard copies of my books. Blu trinity is very very new, but the basic idea is that I can keep doing my web thing, and they will handle the physical portion. If it doesn't work out over the next year or two then things will be renegotiated.

I really want to get copies of my comic(s) into peoples hands, and what I discovered after printing and selling a few demon's mirror books at a con was that handling the physical side of things is worlds more work than putting up pages on a website.

It's very important to me that the books are of a professional quality, but I believe that Blu Trinity will be willing to do revisions with me to get them to that point.

There are other publishers I could have pitched A Better Place to- but very few of them would have allowed me to keep putting it online for free, and even fewer would have allowed me to keep all copyright. (that is if they even wanted to publish it in the first place)

oh I'd love to self publish- But honestly I'm just not very good at it? I literally have a POD version of "Demon's Mirror" online, and every way I can think of to get it into people's hands just doesn't make any sense. It either costs them too much money, or actually loses me money.

I think the only way to make it work is to print a huge amount, and store it at your place- but that requires up front costs, and space at your home. And then shipping itself is a massive cost.

I just want to work on comics-

>>
>>84194275
Not Harro but printing companies have minimums and it's cheaper to buy more than less anyway.
>>
>>84194305
Your dreams would be far likelier than his dreams. Barrier of entry for webcomics may be low, but it's even lower for twitch streamers. That market is even more flooded, and has no end game if the stream market collapses.

If you put effort into drawing, at worst you'll still find work as background monkeys or basic graphics design.
>>
>>84194340
Yep, most printing companies have minimums to the order of 100, 500, or even 1000. You have to be prepared to seriously invest in it and plan to go to lots of cons and aggressively market the books. Comics is a business, brother.
>>

Are you Bizzaro me? My comic is about the acceptance of death. Although I wrote the first draft several years ago, it's definitely hurting a lot more as I write it now. I'm working through a lot of issues and my own mental illness, and especially trying to cope with losing one of my friends.

Mine doesn't really have a happy ending, though. My MC has to die for it to make sense.

Well, even an ending where somebody dies can be "happy".
Maybe they manage to make peace with their past and make the most out of what life they had left. Maybe they leave a mark on somebody else.

My "happier" ending wouldn't be a case of the world becoming a place without death and loss, but somehow managing to convince it that there's a lasting value to transient things, and that the pain of loss is an affirmation of the value of the thing that was lost, rather than a reason to never value things.
Right now I'm having trouble writing it in a way that I'd find convincing.

That's true, it all depends on the story. My MC just ends up learning that trying to cheat death is unfair. At least I think that's what she learns. I'm not a very good writer.

Anyway, your ending sounds really pleasant. I think if you just try to stay genuine and not overpower that message with flowery writing (not saying you'll do this, but I've seen good messages get a bit muddied because of the writer's want to be as eloquent as possible) it'll be strong.

Hey, fuck you, guy!

I'm kidding, thank you. In all honesty, there's a lot of my own personal baggage going into this story. I think the message is a little less "cheating death is bad" and more "death is inescapable and inevitable"? I think as someone who has recently lost a friend and deals with a lot of fear about death, making this will be more of a personal endeavor than anything. I don't know.

It may not make a lot of sense, but I really just need to make SOMETHING, you know? I just need to put something together to feel halfway alright about being an artist.

At least it will look good. I thope.

I'm currently too busy to start it up, but I came up with a story and was wondering what you guys would think.

>after a hostage situation gone wrong, a member of a SWAT team becomes aware of the existence of a supernatural conspiracy within the government and secretly recruits the rest of his team and a few trusted officers to wage a shadow war on them.

Arc 1
>the main character corners a hostage taker and tries to talk him down, but the hostage turns into a monster and tears her captor's throat out before trying to silence the officer as well. He manages to kill her, but the corpse reverts to a human shape on death, leaving him with doubts about his own sanity, the bullet-riddled corpse of an unarmed woman he was supposed to save, and a pending investigation from internal affairs. Desperately trying to convince himself he's not insane, he secretly investigates the dead woman.

Arc 2:
>Not knowing who to trust and convinced that he's dealing with an inhuman threat beyond the scope of the law, the main character starts a vigilante conspiracy of his own to fight the bad guys - but how far do the ends justify the means?

Arc 3
>as the monster society begin to realize something's amiss, the officer himself has to confront that things are not nearly as black and white as he thought they were.

I think I would have two more arcs after that, with the eventual conclusion being that monsters are revealed to the public, but with the officer trying to create a sort of peaceful coexistence.

The main character would be an eccentric, by-the-book cop with a strong need to be a hero powered by his desire to make up for his pedophile urges. This is what eventually gets him to empathize with the less-horrible monsters, like vampires that only feed on willing hosts or who live off of blood stolen from hospitals.

The original idea had vampires as the monsters, but I'm afraid that might be a bit passé.

>"death is inescapable and inevitable"
That's not really a message, is it?
Everybody already knows death is inevitable.

I think it might be a better idea to try and make the message something about how people should or shouldn't handle the inevitability of death.

Perhaps how people are too afraid to confront their own mortality, making them unable to appreciate the limited time they have.

That kind of is the message, at least that's what I'm trying to get across. The main character has a near-death experience and meets Death, then tries to trick Death into spending time on the plane of the living in order to make Death forget, or basically stave her own death off a little longer.

It basically turns out that Death spends too much time with the living and death (the concept) comes to a halt because she isn't doing her job anymore, and the MC has to accept that she, and everyone (eventually), has to die and that there's no use trying to escape from Your Time when it comes.

Like I said it's kind of all over the place. Pls no bully

Thanks, that test panel was done in Clip Studio Paint/Manga Studio. I got it last week during the sale and I'm honestly very pleased with it, as someone who does comics and illustration often. Going back to PS for comic work now is like trying to draw with an oven mitt on.

clip studio really is so solid for doing comic work

Also- having a legal copy and getting free updates for like, $20 is a good feeling.

What makes it better than, say, PS?
>>
>>84210743
Have you given the website a look? There are a lot of examples of what the program can do for cartoonists and comic artists that PS isn't really optimized for. My favorite tools right now are

-efficient panel creation (you can drag a large square onto your canvas and then "slice" the square into panels that all have the same consistent border size or design)
-masks on said panels (as in, you can draw in your panels and keep the drawings in there without having to worry about drawing outside the lines)
-perspective rulers (self-explanatory, but SO efficient and useful, you can just drop a perfect 1, 2, or 3 pt perspective grid anywhere and your drawn lines will snap to the guides)
-speech bubble creation (I used this in the test panel above, it basically creates perfect speech bubbles in whatever size or shape you want, helps you center the text and make the tails very easily)

What voices/voice actors do you imagine for your characters?
>>

Does that come off as weird to anyone else? I've never 'heard' written dialogue. It just doesn't come to me naturally.

Doesn't seem weird to me at all. I think knowing how a character sounds can really add to them and who they are.

I can dig it

it's got a good mix of the deep interesting stuff of questioning sanity and inner psychological urges and the balls to the wall cool factor of a lone police man taking down a mob of giant vampire killer fiends on his own.

I think i'd prefer if he fails to recruit his team, or if those he recruits immediately are killed off, leading to the story of a lone man taking the burden on his own
It could be an interesting character arc, seeing him decide against letting his team get dragged in to it, to their inevitable deaths.
Perhaps it could be towards the end

if it's got the art to pull it off then i'd be interested

Perhaps he could sympathize with the vampires at first, but over time, grow to hate them to the core, with an "extermination" mindset
>>
>>84212948
>leading to the story of a lone man taking the burden on his own
But Anon then I can't have the climax be a SWAT raid on a vampire hideout, which is the seed of the whole story. I also feel like the "lone vampire hunter" is common enough that having the guy be a team player makes him stand out.

The first part of the story would definitely have him trying to be a lone wolf and keeping people like his partner and swat team members out of it until he realizes it's too big to handle on his own.

As for his attitude, I was thinking of having him start out hating them as inhuman monsters, but ending up seeing them as just another kind of criminal. I think having him handcuff the head vampires and bring them in for trial, rather than staking everyone, would be a good ending.

most people do. i thought maybe a community of artists wouldn't be that predictably ignorant, but it just goes to show
>>
Seems you are at a crossroad here. The amount of people reacting negatively to the pedophile part is a test - are you able to write a story that will convey some humanity to a character with a trait so universally despised?

It's your original goal, and I hope you will have courage to pull through with your vision in the face of all this.
>>
>>84213973
"universally" despised only by people who think what they're told to think, so... just tell them to think something else.
>>
>>84213934
>>84214009

That's kind of the point he's making, man. You have to make this character sympathetic and understandable if you're going to give him such a hated trait. You have the job to make your audience NOT hate him.
>>
>>84214039
i assumed it went without saying this guy doesn't drive a rusty unmarked van when he's not driving his squad car.
>>
>>84214102
"pedophile urges" kind of implies some not-so-great shit imo
>>
>>84214138
it really doesn't.
it says he's "making up for" (one assumes they meant 'atoning for' not literally 'compensating for') his urges. meaning A) all they are is urges, and B) he feels guilty about them
urges are never wrong. acting like they are only fosters the idea that people are incapable of resisting their desires, which leads to even more 'do whatever you feel' bullshit modern hedonism
>>
>>84214159
I think you're still missing the point that most people DO believe that there is automatically an issue with a person having an attraction to children whether they act on it or not, and there will have to be some very strong writing on your part to make up for the fact that that is a commonly held belief.

You can't just write that shit without taking that into consideration and just scream that your readers are a bunch of dumb ignorami and that they should know better.
>>
>>84214207
a moral panic is not a commonly held belief, it's a fad. you just ignore it and write according to much longer-term ways of thinking, and wait for it to blow over
more to the point though he said the character is fighting with this issue. it's going to be written as a flaw, a challenge for him. that covers everything you're suggesting and then some.
>>
>>84214229
Then why are you getting so upset?
>>
>>84213973
Well, it's not going to be revealed until a ways into the story (just vague hints that are obvious in hindsight, like not showing any attraction towards women and being really uncomfortable around children), so the audience will be able to form an attachment before they find out.

>>84214138
He's not a child molester. I'm not sure whether I'd have him be completely repressed because he's afraid of a slippery slope or if he'd be revealed to have relatively harmless outlets like loli anime or at worst "misplaced" evidence from CP cases.
>>
>>84213973
>are you able to write a story that will convey some humanity to a character with a trait so universally despised?
He's posting in /hyw/ so no.
>>
>>84214229
A moral panic absolutely can be a commonly held belief. Take, for example, the idea that homosexuals are all child molesters. That was a commonly held belief at one time, AND a moral panic. Also whoops I thought I was talking to the author.

>>84214272
It all depends on how sympathetic you want to make him, and who your audience is. I personally wouldn't want to sympathize with someone who actively masturbates to child porn. I'd probably sympathize more with him if he was repressing himself entirely and going to therapy

I'd desaturate the cool tones. They're outside at night, and not underground, right?
>>
>>84217176
No, they're underground alright. Would you recommend I go with something more "lifelike" in terms of lighting? I mostly wanted to go for something a little more eye-catching. I will be changing the color of the minecart in the foreground though. It's a little too purple and sticks out like a sore thumb.
>>
>>84217255
Well, I won't make any claims to its realism or appeal, but for an underground scene with no night sky, I'd go nearly chiaroscuro. Long, near-black shadows, and have any colors in the shadows be warm, like they're reflections of the lamp off the cave walls and floor.

one of the biggest things i've learned trying to make things is that everything has already been made. what makes it unique is your personal interpretation or the way you present it. So if you want to come up with ideas, i'd advise that you brainstorm a story you'd love to read that doesnt exist, and then find the elements you like that you can identify in other stories you like and fuse them together. remix, and analyze.

and besides, making things is easier once you start making something and have a base to build on.

Rate my faggots

These dudes are currently my Plan B if my other webcomic doesn't pull through.
Imagine them as a slice of life joke of the day comic thing
They are also currently being used as personas for me and my friend's twitch stream

I'm an artist with no creativity. Let's make a really bland webcomic together.

pretty bad artwise m8 but all around they remind me of old newgrounds mascots so they're fine by me

I can dig the 2003 Newgrounds flash animation feel it's got going.

So i can eat a nymph right? It wouldn't be cannibalism? The way I see it if those fuckers are going to eat us, then there should be no reason we can't eat them.

It's not my best work. I've done better in this style but all the stuff I am actually proud of would probably be able to be reverse image searched to my stuff

Besides. I drew that up while multitasking other things

Amazing! Some of the most interesting character designs I've ever seen in /hyw/, great lines too. What's the name of your comic?

Not him, but their main comic is at

This keeps getting better. Thanks m8.

Like Dobson? I think the problem there was his attitude about it, just don't handle it the way he did and youl'l be fine.

How do I properly into color?
>>
>>84231577
First master value, then move on to hue and chroma/saturation.

To apply this to your work process, make sure your image works in greyscale before you add color.

Study light in greyscale.

But it helps to play with colors while you do that because it is a kind of learning process.

I actually prefer not to say because I think that-s more fun left to each reader-s imagination.
Like, I once read an Interview where Dave Sim said which voice he imagined for Cerebus; but as I tried to read his dialogue with it it made the character less enjoyable for me and I went back to the voice I imagined.

>>84216596
Yours? Mine is dying a slow death. I don't mind so much ATM, there's a bunch of books I'd been meaning to read but couldn't find the time between comic and job application. BUT I don't ike drawing a page that'll be uploaded on the next week or two, makes me nervous if there's something I want to change at the last minute.

>>84230117
Eh, I've drawn worse...

>>84220457
I-I worked on my epilogue!
It's been hell to write
On one hand, I don't want the story to stay in the North for much longer; on the other, it's to tie all loose ends for this arc.
