Guy's a weird case. I sort of picture it as a Chris Pratt by way of Henry Rollins. He's someone who was bro-tier but is very exhausted and physically drained. Like he probably used to look a bit more normal but the past few years haven't been well to him. His story really isn't plot focus because it has been "resolved" so to speak; but he was about five years ago a county fair level punk rock guy.

And then while fucking his girlfriend Beth backstage she shot herself in the head with a magnum because she thought it would be immortalizing and he was supposed to do it to. And so he's sort of been stuck seeing her and all other sorts of dead people for about five years, which has seen him fucking around the Jersey Shore getting fired from any job involving people because he talks to people who usually aren't there. So Scott helped him out with that, but he's still utterly fucked as a human being.

So he hasn't eaten well or had much sleep in about half a decade because he's always seeing horrific things or being harassed by horrific things.

Funny enough, Guy and Beth were part of an old porn comic project that got scrapped with another artist because of time constraints which I actually really liked because it dealt with the idea of occult fallout, body-hijacking, spiritual oppression and toxic toxic fucking romance.

So the last time you told me this I went back and reread all my stuff and compared it to the few Kevin Smith products I've ever seen; namely Clerks (plus the cartoon of it), Mallrats, and Dogma (surprisingly, only ever the TV version on Comedy Central). I didn't catch a lot of what you're putting down, but I took it to heart because I do like to look and see where my influences are coming from.

And the last time I watched Kevin Smith stuff, prior to all this, was in the mid-2000s when I had a tiny black TV with a DVD player built into it. Rewatching them was moderately enjoyable, I think parts of them all hold up while others fall short.

A Kevin Smith monologue is generally more personalized to the person who is on the receiving end of it, like Silent Bob's speech at the end of Clerks to Dante. And I don't think I manage that. I also am aware that my dialogue is not inane enough or non-sequitur enough to hit the Randall/Dante dichotomy (for better or for worse). It is vulgar, I'll give you that; which could be part of where you're coming from.

I channel a lot of 30 Rock/American Dad in my writing process because I'm generally listening to that in the background, but I don't see much of an influence showing up. Because ultimately I try to place vocal patterns I'm familiar with in my own life. I talk like Erin talks, I know a lot of people who talk like Jam talks, and I've generally placed everyone's patterns within the Society from people in my own life I've encountered or by how my diction shifts when I've overcome with an emotion (generally a negative one).

If you can specify, I would appreciate it.. Or if this was just at my expense, I can try to channel some David Mamet for you next time around.

I appreciate that, but I also don't take umbrage to the comment either. If I do, realistically, appear to be too influenced by an individual who I don't expose myself to that often I might benefit from better understanding the how and the why so as to differentiate myself for the better. Ideally, to split the difference and both win over the reader who dislikes the dialogue flow and to of course please the retained audience.

Doing some logo work updating something I did a few years ago after rewriting the story's premise somewhat.
The title is a double entendre, partially inspired by Julie Doucet's "Dirty Plotte" and my love of Ankama. "Plotte" is vulgar slang in Quebec, roughly the equivalent of "cunt" in both application to the genitals and pejorative for a bitchy woman.

It feels like it's a little empty, maybe missing wings or swords on the sides, but I might just be second guessing myself. Thoughts?

"I watch it for the plot" was a thing way before that. I remember made some macros about it back when Wakfu came out, but the term actually originates from places like /a/ and gets applied liberally whenever waifuism is involved.

And yeah, while I didn't have the 80s in mind specifically I was thinking about the cartoons I used to watch growing up in the 90s that would use thick fonts and have crests or icons behind their titles in the opening sequence.

I prefer drawing in a cartoonish style so that's good - I was actually concerned the usage of texture may have made it too jarringly uncartoonish to mesh well with my art.

I need to try and accept just how long it's going to take until I reach a point where I can actually release something. Unless I can work on this full-time (ha!) it's probably going to take at least a year, maybe more, to complete the first chapter. Feeling rushed for time only results in frustration.

Also need to try to condition myself to do it more regularly, like a workout routine. I've been pretty bad at that.
>>
>>84020935
To expand upon this, I have about 50 documents, most not more than half a page long. A lot of character spreadsheets that I keep making trying to find new ways to categorize them all. Some pages trying to figure out some kind or lore or organization that I try to come up with. As much as I gloated about "big stuff" I just realized how much of a disorganized mess I am, both in files and in creativity.

I can understand that from looking at those three. There are orcs, dwarves and elves in the story, as well as skyships and mana based weaponry that make everything a lot more fantastical. The villain also draws power from a Lovecraftian source that serves as a secondary villain to this series, as the skullfaced villain is more of a Team Rocket style comic relief somewhat inspired by Donald Trump.

The whole universe is based roughly off Nordic creation myth with a bit of science mixed in. I took Yggdrasil as a base to interpret our universe where the center of the tree represents a planet, the core of the tree a world within a world, its roots the descent into the underworld realms plus a metaphor on how our universe "grew" from "nothing", and the branches and leaves representing both space and a multiverse. The Lovecraftian forces come from something inspired by Ginnungagap in Nordic mythology and are merged with the worm Nidhog who chews at Yggdrasil because tentacles. Pic related is a stylized diagram, but minus the names of the realms as I haven't decided on them all.

I can confess the girl has a lot of inspiration from capes, though. Peej has always been one of my favourite capes, and when she lost her boobwindow in the Nu52 I had added the design element to the female character and eventually wrote it functionally into the story because she can pull mana based energy weapons from her cleavage as well pull open the boob window to perform energy attacks. The story takes place after a Ragnarok-type event and the girl is supposed to have a portion of the powers of the various fallen gods, so her overall powerset is not unlike characters like Shazam or Invincible or Mary-Sue with smug

>>84020495
I'm not really an anime fan so I don't get the reference.
The title doesn't have much to do with anything, other than being dirty humor since the story is meant to be fun and not super serious.

What do you guys think of a short story where its set in an occupied country at war and 3 prisoners at a camp capture a guard who they force to help them get out of the country to freedom. Along the way they come across some camps that they then liberate to varying degrees, because their goal isnt to free everyone, just themselves.
>>

the original line was "she'll get the role because of her big boobs" and the dub made it "her huge... talent!" with the pause (and the unaltered hands gesture) making it pretty clear what she meant. if you ever find yourself in 2001 you'll need to know these things.

>>
>>84021545

well, the way to write tragedy without crushing grimness is to allow some hope. not dash the reader's expectations too many times. they'll get fatigued eventually. you have to work on pacing
>>
>>84021508
Well like i said, they liberate camps to varying degrees. Of the 3 camps they encounter only 1 they really liberate, because at the end near the border is heavily fortified and guarded, so they need a bit of help to get thru.

the beta is pretty much equivalent to the feminine, so just pretend you're the characters as you're writing.
>>
>>84024430
Go ask any girls you know what girls are like.

Read media aimed at girls, written by girls, for an idea of how girls might perceive themselves.

Go visit predominantly female social spaces (online or offline) and get a better grip on their interactions and how they present themselves.

Go read up on the actual psychological studies that have been made on the differences between how boys and girls socialize.

What exactly is it that makes you particularly worried about writing girls, rather than any other kind of characteristic that you don't share in real life, like a cop character?
>>
>>84024430
If you can't get into the same head space as a woman you ain't been interacting with them to much then homie...woman are complex but it's not to hard to portray one in a comic or whatever. Watch some cartoons or movies with the type of chicks you want to create to get a better understanding .of course you could talk to one and would be a nice excuse to speak to a female and get her opinion on the characters your making.
>>
>>84024430
Realistic women often aren't as interesting or amusing as imaginary ones. Think about what you really want to write.

I remember a recent thread people were arguing about when to start using Patreon, but it all seemed to be a back-and-forth of "before you have a big fanbase" and "after you have a big fanbase", but no real mention or discussion of what constitutes a good-sized fanbase/readerbase. Just how many unique visits a day would you guys believe justifies starting up a Patreon?
>>
>>84025188
I'd say a couple hundred, based on a very tiny amount of research into the subject.
It also depends on how long you've been updating. Even if you get a lot of visitors, nobody's going to want to risk it if you're still in the beginning stages of your comic.

It doesn't matter when you start Patreon, it's just kinda discouraging to do it really early because you won't have any Patrons for a long time, and they'll come in at far more of a trickle than they will if you wait to build up a fanbase first.

If that kind of thing doesn't discourage you or make you feel bad then you can start a Patron the very second your comic launches.

There's a lot of different factors that go into how successful your Patreon is in the early stages.

I'm starting to wonder whether or not my story crafting method is...I don't know...mature enough. I mean, I had planned to kill off characters in my story, and for plenty of bad things to happen to them, but compared to Berserk, it's like a Sunday afternoon walk through the park.

And then I wonder if I even want to write stories so...raw. I don't think I could.
>>
>>84026537
I like Berserk, but I don't know if I would call it particularly mature. It's just unrelentingly dark. I don't think a story being less grim or graphic or depressing is a mark against it.

That said, if you really do want to write a story like Berserk, yeah, you're gonna have to learn to revel in twisting the knife.

Different poster here, I see where that anon is coming from, although he's slightly off.

It's not that you're ripping off Kevin Smith for dialogue, but you are falling into the same trap Smith often does when writing dialogue, where every character sounds like the same person 90% of the time, that person being very obviously (to me and apparently at least one other person) the writer. The characters don't feel as unique as they look.

Off the top of my head, I tried to have a decompressed 5-person fight scene in a dark room begin and finish in a single page because I wanted to avoid boring people and capture some of the feeling of abruptness in an actual fight.
It ended up being pretty good considering, but man, it's a mess.
I'd considered giving myself a hard limit of 1 page per fight scene, but after this I figured that probably wasn't a good idea.

>>84029051
Two pages of talking probably isn't the worst way to handle this conversation, and to some extent whether it's "okay" depends on what the payoff for the individual ideas you spent time on is.

I could point out ways to shorten it, but I wouldn't say you need to. Things flow okay as is. That said, if you worry about this stuff, bring it to us sooner so you don't waste time on stuff you might excise.

The introduction sequence could technically be condensed or excised if you wanted to rush things.

"Why"/"he didn't mention" could just be "He didn't say why" as a second bubble in the prior panel.

The pulling rank bit at the end of p1 I'm going to assume is important for establishing rank. And it's a good mark to end a page on.

I would assume that the valholl/silver hall bit is important, but if you wanted to cram stuff into one page, this bit could be established at another point. Say, you could "cut" over some stuff and this could be a conversation on the way there.

Bird is badass, and (guessing) narratively significant.

Second page could probably do without the last three panels altogether. The big reaction is a punchier way to end a page.
>>

I think I may have miscommunicated a bit. I'm not so much looking to cut down so that I can get to the next scene faster (I think having it go a bit slow will add something to the reading experience once it's done, although I think it's gonna be pretty tortuous reading week by week), as I am trying to figure out a better way to frame it so there isn't so much repetitive
>character A's face with speech bubble
>character B's face with speech bubble
type stuff.

>>84032801
>bring it to us sooner so you don't waste time on stuff you might excise.
Yeah I know, but I didn't really notice that I didn't like the pages all that much until just recently.

pic related is the page after these, just for context of where I'm going with it. I feel like having the previous page end on the fading echo of a joke, rather than its punchline, provides for a smoother transition.
>>
>>84033702
oh that
ehhhh i think you're fine.. their expressions have such variety, you're zooming in and out a lot.. but you could always take a page out of sisters' book and pan up and down a bit. a shot of just legs, a shot from above, that kinda stuff.
>>
>>84033702
Ah okay.

Things to try:
>pushing in
>pushing out
>one character per frame
>shot reverse shot
>"stage" logic with a group conversing but facing a similar direction... bonus points if they have a specific reason to do so
>insert shot of significant detail
>cutaway shot of the thing being discussed
>collage logic that combines disparate images into a single panel, like placing the insert/cutaway behind the talking figures

Maybe not all great for these particular pages, but it's a short checklist.

First two panels of the second page might use that last bit if you're looking to mix it up. Sticking something valhollish in the first BG and something silver hallish in the second. Bird sequence is good. Might be an opportunity to break the panels with the second part of the sequence if you're feeling up to it actually. Cutting from that to a down shot of the group is good. Close up for the crazy reaction is good.

Last three panels still feel like a weak note to end on, and I'm much less clear on what specific treatment would enhance what you're going for. Probably because I'm not getting what your specific goals are for that segment.

Page three is looking pretty good.

Alri, lads. I gotta make a 12 panel comic strip for my uni portfolio. It has to be about two conflicting characters who meet a third person/object and the comic comes to a surprising conclusion.

Character A is a loner who likes character B. Character B is an asshole. B and his friends want to play a prank on A, so B invites A to a "haunted mansion". A accepts. B and his friends made a deal to meet up on the second floor of the mansion, B arrives but no one else is there. He hears that A arrived, and decides to put on a ghost costume himself, since he guesses everyone else is just late for some reason. Meanwhile A is walking around, finds some bones, then turns a corner and B scares her. A screams and runs away. B is pleased with himself and laughs, panel shows a huge disgusting monster behind him.

Is it too simple and cliche? Should I go with something 2deep instead?

It's simple, but there's nothing wrong with simple, especially when you only have twelve panels to work with. Why does he want to see the main characters? Are they in trouble? How dangerous is he? What kind of god is Odinn even in this take on the Norse pantheon? What's this silver hall thing, I thought the gods of Asgard all lived in Valhalla?

>>84035531
>I'll try to relay on words as little as possible
I should probably add the qualifier that the portfolio people I have experience with are from animation school, so if you're applying for a general art school or something specialized in comics, they might well prioritize things differently (I could see a comics school being very interested in your lettering, for instance). Probably also relevant that I never actually got accepted.

Very respected, from what I hear. I'd like to think I could have gotten in eventually, but one day it occurred to me that if I really wanted to be an animator like I kept telling myself, why hadn't I ever bothered trying to learn how to animate on my own in the years I'd spent applying?

Eh, I think Skeggöld could make a decent grey/villainous character in a superhero setting.
>millennia-old supernatural being (if she just lived into the modern era)
>martial arts master
>fate magic bullshit
>little to no care for the lives of others, but has her own code of honor
It could even tie together with the retirement theme of Miss Melee, since the Norse gods aren't widely worshiped anymore.
The power levels might be a little off, though, since Miss Melee's only power is martial arts and Skeggöld has magic bullshit on top of that. You could easily write it so that she's holding back on the magic for warrior honor reasons though.

Obviously I'd like to make a living through art and comics eventually, but that's still a long ways off from being a realistic idea if I don't want to move away from all my family and friends to somewhere cheaper.

What's with people and gay characters?

I was telling someone about a story I'm working on that's set in the medieval time period. Anyways, I mentioned in my story that the young MC is manipulated by this older girl, and the person actually said "That's so heteronormative. Why can't it be two guys?"

step 1. stop talking to those people
step 2. stop talking to us people about those people (you won't have anything to say anymore because you're not talking to them)

That person doesn't care about supporting gay people - they care about hating straight people. That would be like saying "That's so Zionist" if your story was about two Israelis experiencing the Crusades and Jihads from their point of view.
Never listen to people that speak with buzzwords.

I mean, he's still learning - who isn't? - but bravo.
>>
>>84044883
i doubt they care about hating anyone, i think they care about caring. or rather, they care about LOOKING like they care. and bullying others around so they can take the dominant position. caring has become like buttsex, if you don't care the fuck out of the biggest guy in priz, he's gonna care you right up the ass.

i don't remember him being resistant so much as being very content with the way things were. we had to explain how the changes would help

Try implementing it, see if you wouldn't actually like it better that way. It happens a lot, in my experience.

Even if you don't end up liking it, you're likely to get a better idea of what it does to your work, and how you can best avoid the issues of your current technique.

See if there's any aspect of the crit that you think would be beneficial towards what you want.

If not, you don't necessarily have to use it. Not to say that you should go out and say "fuck all crits" but at the end of the day it should still be something you enjoy and if you're not enjoying it, it's not really your work anymore

Always listen do it, always consider it, but never just accept it and adopt what they say outright

somewhere out there are a whole slew of people who will shit on everything purely so that when one of their 50,000 negative predictions comes true they can smugly say "i told you so! if only you had listened to me!" and these people go insane if you don't take their advice, even on subjects they know nothing about.

>drawing your comic on printer paper

I wouldn't use regular office printing paper because it's really really thin and gets damaged easily, but I have used thicker printer paper in the past and it worked fine and was still much cheaper than drawing paper.

It probably also depends on what else you want to use though, some tools only play nice with high quality materials. But if you're just using standard pencils and fineliners, it shouldn't be a problem.

You are on the right track with this shot, but the mood is still too cartoony to have an impact.

Sadly, I can't pinpoint better what is missing from this image, all I know is the sunset warm colors inside of the house are pretty on point, but the outside seems like a shiny happy day. I think it's the contrasting light blue, that contrary to the norm, seems pretty happy here alongside the gloomy red. It's all too bright, you need more shadows, more variation on contrast.
The cracks on the wall and the stairs are not enough to give that sad feel of an abandoned house, it looks more like a crappy cartoon house, you know, like a poor character is supposed to live there, but it's not particularly sad.

To fix these things I suggest you research a ton of paintings that make you feel sad and try to replicate that mood. Also research real old abandoned houses and try to include the little details on your work.

to people who are on the fence about making patreon, its like this comment i just left this dude on youtube, its literally just a tip jar, you dont even have to give out reward tiers if you dont want to and your rewards could be something as simple as a quick shout out to your top ten donators or something if you do want to give out rewards to people who tip you 100 dollars a month or something, dude, make a patreon lol

if no one tips your tip jar thats fine because at least you tried, at least its there, because you never know, its free to make and you have nothing to lose from doing it

but I guess I can particip8 anyway.. maybe you guys can help me figure it out. the inconsistent chibiness doesn't help, but i wanna say Sasha is tall for a woman, something like 5'9", mainly because of her dad.. Mizu has to be shorter than her.. Kimchi has finally hit adult height and I wanna say he's rocking 5'10" while Kaen has a full 6 feet or maybe even more, the towering ginge he is.. Robin is canonically supposed to be inconsistent due to loose and lazy shapeshifting, but I guess she and Riven might be like 5'4-5'6". one thing i never managed to do but always wanted to was show how the rubbery aliens from mercury get taller in their native gravity and are more squat here.
and I guess Hel's 4'8"-ish. of course i also try to draw them slowly growing up, if they're still growing..

I should probably make a proper model sheet for Fili and Noli; I cobbled something together which is where these come from, but they're probably still slightly out of scale to each other.

The only height I have fixed is that Fili is 6' 0" exactly. Noli is half a head shorter, (or somewhere around 5' 6"); I usually just eyeball the height. I also tend to draw them around 5-6 heads high, so I'll have to see what they look like with normal human proportions.

In fact, it feels nostalgic, I haven't drawn battles since 2012 I think, and even then, it was more light than my usual stuff.

I think this embarrassment (pic related) was from 2006/7. I still like it because I took the job to do every kinetic line manually. I still do, for the most part, but since I don't draw that much action, I don't get that many chances.

as mentioned earlier, 'reparation' in the legal sense of 'paying someone back for a crime committed against them' is how americans use the word reparation. they do NOT use it to mean literal repairs or the cost thereof. please try to keep up.
the figurative sense of reparation could be used in this context, but it's not something a person would likely say to an intruder who just leapt through a window
>>
>>84060288
Most of the dictionaries I'm looking at consider using "reparation" in the sense of "repairs" an archaic usage, or at least have it way down the line of meanings of "reparation".

>>84060441
They're not using "reparations" to mean "repairs" but "compensation".

They are literally talking about contractors, mechanics and landscapers.
It's not my fault you're poorly educated and can't speak proper english.
>>
On the whole reparation thing, Selena is a person with less than minimum education (grade school dropout by force), so she is not used to archaic terms, or complicated ones for that matter. I picked the word because it sounded right to me, but I needed to keep in mind she's not really a person of using, shall we say, big words, and kept the dialogue simple enough.

Since I'm not native, I wasn't sure that word carried that many interpretations considering where you say it and how.

I'll find something simpler I think.

oh gasp, every single result is about reparations in the political sense, except the first which is written in broken english
>>
According to Oxford:
The action of making amends for a wrong one has done, by providing payment or other assistance to those who have been wronged:
the courts required a convicted offender to make financial reparation to his victim

1.1 (reparations) The compensation for war damage paid by a defeated state:
the Treaty of Versailles imposed heavy reparations and restrictions on Germany

2 archaic The action of repairing something:
the old hall was pulled down to avoid the cost of reparation

So, this means the term, while not linguistically wrong, it wasn't used correctly, and more over so, like I stated before, doesn't suit the character.

You could have not replied to anything given I only said it was proper english, but instead like the spergs here incapable of receiving criticism on their comics you insist you're right no matter how many times you're BTFO.

Of course, since you're Coldfusion or bones given how recognizable their typing styles are since they're the only /HYW/ posters who type in all lowercase YOU ARE one of those spergs that can't handle being wrong.
>>
>>84061177
According to Oxford:
>These words are no longer in everyday use or have lost a particular meaning in current usage but are sometimes used to impart an old-fashioned flavor to historical novels, for example, or in standard conversation or writing just for a humorous effect. Some, such as bedlam, reveal the origin of their current meaning, while others reveal the origin of a different modern word, as with gentle, the sense of which is preserved in gentleman. Some, such as learn and let, now mean the opposite of their former use.
It WAS used correctly. On top of that other dictionaries don't even define reparation as an archaic word.
Like I said the problem is no one would bother using a proper word like that in the middle of a fight, not that the word was misused.
>>
>>84061209
Seriously, have you tried actually searching for those terms on duckduckgo? None of the results use the word "reparation". The search engine simply assumes you meant "repair".

If this character has control of water, I think I'm going to get sued by Viz. I like the idea of chaos and stasis - that is kind of what I'm already going for with both other options - but I struggle to find those kind of attributes visually appealing in a comic setting.

it's confusing. early on she was all excited and proud of me, telling me to put it on my resume, to brag to people that I designed the site (after i'd moved on from the free tripod sites duct taped together as each one filled its data limit, after they noticed what i'd done, and cobbled together my own shitty one).. I'd hear her telling her friends on the phone about it, in her own vague way..
but then once she got mad at me when the comic sarcastically remarked that it's easier to leave your parents and go on adventures and shit if they're monsters that hate you. Like, missing the point much? i DIDN'T leave you and go on adventures. and it's not an autobiography.
then later she's like.. suggesting a character to me, that i put in, and subtly name after her..
then i hear nothing after doing so, and later she asks if i'm still doing a comic.
then somehow she only just recently noticed it had boobies, and had a frankly immature reaction to it considering she raised me on british comedy, and spent a good chunk of her formative years in europe.

Yes, I was. If you do paid advertising with Project Wonderful and you're smart about it (plus a little bit of experience), it can easily be the most cost-effective means of advertising your comic.

The $0 advertising gimmick does produce results but you have to spend an hour or more every single day bidding to get them, which is no problem for me as I, as the writer, have tons of free time, but for the average webcomic creator who does everything for their comic by themselves, or for someone with a busier real life than me, it's not worth the effort.

I used grammar check. They told me to used "doubts".

Sorry, I forgot what you just say while I was proofreading. I going to change it. Again, Sorry...

Like the EU /hyw/ is about to end
And what have we learned, foe and friend?
That the people who can't draw or write
Can't speak English and like to fight
And that reparation is a normal word
That triggers salty SJW turds
And lo the bump limit we now reach
So do have sex I must you beseech

You either need someone to proofread and correct your writing or you need to give up on English entirely.

I'm sorry.

Your grammar check is a low-quality one. It probably only read the preceding word and the following word and ignored the sentence at large.

it is okay, I really do not know someone that can do it. They are either not interest in writing or got bad grammar like me.

Hey how do you guys decide on poses that embody a character? I'm trying to do character BIOs for each of my characters and for whatever reason am having a tough time condensing their personality to a single pose. Do I just do normal drivers license type photos or should I do action poses?

>Do they "lead" with the head, chest, or pelvis?
>Do they stand in a way that increases or diminishes their height?
>Are they a fighter? If so, do they stand with their side to the viewer and narrow their profile?

This sort of stuff. If you're looking for a bio illustration anyway.

Speaking of which, status update ~
Starting out with the West Tree characters since they're the biggest pile of characters that needed to be modified to fit in a line up, and they're all in the same style. Still some minor tweaks to be made so they're not too off model, especially Angel.
