>>83963349
I think the lines are fine.
The "Like a rock" ballon is what bothers me the most honestly. You should place it more to the right instead of that low on the panel, it is distracting.
>>
>>83963349

>>83963446
>>83963631
The right-to-left thing is a clumsy attempt at countering the line going through Skögul's hair into Raven-hair's spear, while still getting the reader to notice the weird white girl on the right.
I don't really want the threat escalating to murder. Skögul's not really the type to exaggerate, and she doesn't think some 4´11" human girl swinging an axe around is a serious threat.
>>
>>83963714
i didnt notice anyone on the right
i wouldnt have taken the threat seriously. can valkyries even die?
so i take it you arent actually looking to joke, that explains why you don't like the dialogue as it is (it's a nice joke). What tone/mood exactly were you looking for?
>>
>>83963714
But now that I think about it a little, I could just not be a lazy dumbo, lower the spear so it's coming out of Skalmöld's hair, and change Skögul's bangs so that they lead into the next panel. Then I could have Skögul's lines going right instead, which reads way more natural.
>>
>>83963804
Man, this is Norse mythology, everyone can and does die.
I'm making a joke, but the characters aren't, if that makes sense.

You've actually improved a lot in the time you've been gone. I like the colors, it's your best color scheme so far. Keep it up, senpai.

Sorry for bad english, I'm rus.

Maybe "It seems I'll have to find a way to wake you up from a safe distance in the future."
"Perhaps with the chamber pot."
Chamber pots probably weren't a thing back then though. "Latrine bucket"?

>>83964630
Grate improve.
>>
>>83964751
surely people have always had a pot to piss in, for as long as they've had pots...
>>
>>83964751
Pisspot or pissbucket has a nice sound.
>>
>>83964852
Well, a quick google tells me that while chamber pots have been a thing since at least 600 bc, the stuff I've found about vikings seems to suggest that indoor latrines or just going outside were more common. I did find one reference to Loki insulting a god by claiming they allowed giantesses to shit in their mouth (Lokasenna 34), but the word is translated as either "privy" or "chamberpot" by different translators.

>>83964999
That's a very nice ring to it. I'm a sucker for sudden coarseness at the end of an otherwise politely-worded sentence.
>>
This sort of came up in the last thread, but how big should I be making comic pages? If i'm drawing online that is. Right now, it's something like 500x750 pixels, should I really be drawing in inches?
>>
>>83965607
Its always better to format your pages for print since you can always resize down for web without any real problem. It's just a good habit to have and you won't want to kick yourself if you ever decide to go to print and you can't because of how you've drawn your pages.

That being said, the final size for web should be somewhere between 800 and 1000 px wide, scaled proportionally. You don't want to post the bigger files online for several reasons, but it has to be big enough so that your font is readable effortlessly.
>>
>>83965607
It really depends on whether or not you ever care about the comics being printed.
>>
>>83965607
For online publication, you should probably try having a finished version that's about 800-1000 pixels wide. Height isn't so much an issue because people don't mind scrolling downwards.
You should probably work at at least twice that size.
For print, you'll probably want an original that's over 4000 pixels wide to be on the safe side.
>>
>>83965707
i disagree. with current monitor resolutions, big enough for the web IS big enough for printing, automatically. you can just go by pixels entirely and ignore inches and dpi
>>
>>83965756
Print also needs high DPI, 300 is good IIRC.
>>
>>83965868
print doesn't "need" any DPI. whatever you drew it at, once it's shrunk down to the size of printing, its DPI will be calculated accordingly. You don't get to make a decision on that. It's a good idea to check out what your current size looks like printed on a normal-sized page, though
>>
>>83965864
Sure, I guess? You mean like a 4k screen?
Anyways, you probably don't want to put that high res image on your site. Mostly because it will be hell to load for a lot of people. Some like reading on the phone with a poor connection (and usually lower resolution!). There are other reasons of course. It's easier to protect your art and you get something extra (the high res copy) to share with patrons or to make vote incentives and that sorta things.

I have around 7 full pages done
How long do i wait until showing it on say liek tapstic to get it out there?
Is 7 enough?
>>
>>83965943
yeah, what i meant was, you don't draw at web display size, because if you did it would look pretty bad. you draw way bigger, then shrink it down. same basic concept for printing. I have all my original .psds saved, except like one where i accidentally saved the resized version.
>>
>>83966224
comicbook-type pages, where nothing really happens on each page, or comic strip pages where each one can be enjoyed on its own?
>>
>>83965922
All of the self-publishing companies I've seen require a certain DPI to get anything printed.
>>
>>83966456
then what they really need, assuming they only have the standard printing size, is a certain pixel size to get printed.

But he's not working on the lines. He's not working on ANYTHING. It's just an endless spray of shit and the stupid fuck who printed his book is dooming himself to failure. Nobody would want to join a publisher, much less a new one, with such garbage in the catalogue. Dewd is an eighteen year old man and he has absolutely no shame posting his porn comics on the internet as though somebody will actually be turned on by this content that looks like it was drawn by a five year old having a seizure . In b4 u mad? Yes I am 100% mad that anybody could think that this caliber of work is acceptable or an improvement. It's not a polished turd, it's a big, runny, stinky shit and it's making this thread impossible to occupy.

I keep telling myself it will get better but it won't. Dewd gets more replies than many talented artists in these threads. /hyw/ has a reputation for being shit because Dewd posts so much, so frequently, that he is over-represented. >print doesn't "need" any DPI
It does, though. I worked at my college's print shop and DPI is incredibly important. We had so many kids popping up that needed to print their digital art projects and make them portfolio-grade and they looked like shit because they had a 72 DPI image with an image size of roughly 1200x1200. I'd have to show them where they fucked up, they'd have to run back to their dorms/homes and make changes (if they could), it was always a mess with lots of frustration.

If you actually print on good enough paper (i.e. not printer paper), you'll see the difference between 300 DPI and 72 DPI. It never, ever hurts to work bigger than you think you'll need, because raster will never scale up well enough.

Dots per inch. It's basically saying there are X number of dots per linear inch comprising the image. There's a lot of semantics that can be used to differentiate screen dots versus print dots (i.e. DPI vs PPI) but the principle remains the same. More dots per inch means a sharper image in almost (but not entirely) all applications.

>>
>>83974846
Basically, about a year ago, we used to have "thread activities" like, "draw your characters as part of a toyline", "draw your characters in an opposite universe", or "re-design someone else's character as you'd have done it"
They were actually pretty fun, but with 3-4 threads a week, it got harder and harder to think of actually entretaining activities
>>
>>83972934
Hey, feel free if you've got one you'd like. It's not like participation is mandatory.

>>83974846
Basically, the opening post would include a prompt like "draw your character at the beach" or "reimagine your comic except reversed" or "come up with the alternate costumes your character would have in the fighting game"

It got dropped at some point because people weren't showing a lot of interest. Before that we had prompts like "discuss this established web comic and what makes it (not) work" or "discuss X aspect of webcomicking" like "explain the design decisions behind your main character".

>>83975139
So find an artist that feels like the comic is as cool as you do and make him your partner and equal. Or start drawing yourself. Or hock the script at something like Image and see if they like it enough to partner you with an artist.

Eyeball monster's teeth are a little sketchy, still.
Is the barcode forehead guy in panel 1 coming through the window?
>>
>>83975620
No, hmm, I'll need to make it look like his body is pressing against the glass.
Maybe the window reflections will make it more convincing, once I implement it, but I need to experiment on how to draw/paint a blurry city speeding past first.
>>
>>83975724
Doe she have a lower body? It seems strange that we can't see it. That one little spot of white under the brunette's arm is angled a lot like the windowsill would be.
Also, just noticed, the perspective on those handles coming out of the ceiling is really off. It looks like the one she's holding is attached behind the barcode guy.

no lower body, just some kinda exposed spine, I looked through my previous pages, but I never showed her ('It's', actually) body clearly enough, a mistake I didn't think of at the time.
Yeah, there are several perspective inconsistencies, but I'm not sure how to correctly draw the handles in particular. (Maybe just extend the cord past the frame?)

Brunette? The far right one? I think you're right on the windowsill though
>>
>>83976076
>The far right one?
No, the girl in the center of panel 1. There's a little triangle of white under her arm which I assume is barcode creature's bottom. If it didn't align so well with where the windowsill would go, it wouldn't look like it was coming in through the window.

The handle the brunette is holding on to should definitely go all the way out of frame. Likewise with the one on the left, if you want to be consistent.
>>
>>83976233
>little triangle of white under her arm which I assume is barcode creature's bottom
Ah, I see,
The body doesn't extend back, but rather straight down, I'll change it to hopefully make it more clear. I'll fill in that white space too in order to not mislead. Hopefully.

good mourning idiot

first of all you act like we dont have abortions today and have had them since the 50's as far as i know and have killed literally million times more babies than the ancient mayans ever did if they even did it

because second of all, history is written by the winners, and winners of ancient wars, especially in the western civilization burns all the books, texts, houses, temples and destroys statues, recycles jewlery and melts golden trinkets into bars and yes, even literally decides how history remembers the war and what the people were like who they fought

quick non native american example of this is how the romans changed the history of several civilizations history thought were barbarians for hundreds and thousands of years like the saxons until archeology has recently proved otherwise and the reverse, the romans were the barbarians and the so called barbarians were far more advanced and civilized than the romans were

tl;dr your and idiot fuck off, go learn some shit before you start talking shit

These gags are stale.
Your compositions are unnecessarily cluttered and it sometimes makes stuff difficult to read.
Your symbol drawing relies on stale borrowed symbols, and this weird flounder mouth is just the icing on the kind of crappy cake.

You can do better. Spend more time coming up with material in a sketchbook (both written and drawn), don't feel compelled to use all of it, and think a little harder about your execution.

1. The Mayans had abortions too. And also human sacrifice of real people, not just embryos.

2. The word civilization means the building of cities. The Romans were a text-book definition of a civilization, the barbarians were the opposite. And advanced? No.

3. Cannabis comes from central Asia and India. It's not Mayan. Not sure where you got that idea except for modern drug trafficking out of Mexico.

Your joke has some merit to it, albiet a bit unoriginal

You could easily make the joke work. Problem is that you are both using words that too complex for the joke and that the joke is stretched on for too long.
imo, and take it with a grain of salt, keep the punchline to the last panel, and use shorter, more disgusting words. Brevity is the soul of wit, my friend. Instead of a string of multi-syllable words that give connotations of disgust, choose a shorter word that feels disgusting, like 'moist'

if you aren't gonna bother with doing things properly you might as well have given him an easier-to-pose outfit.
>>
>>83986549
i think it's better he uses the challenges of new outfits to learn how to draw cloth properly!
you can do it dewd it's not too hard. think of it like a dress for your shoulders.
actually the 'holding annabeth at arm's length' bits are okay, except his arms are too short (remember if you cant reach your honker you can't jack off)
>>
>>83986734
he should learn how to draw cloth properly before attempting to put them into his comic. it'll just end up looking bad if he uses his comic as his own experimental playground.
>>
>>83986807
there's logic to that, but a comic is a fantastic experimental playground. it's not as if any amount of pre-practice would make this one a masterpiece. Might as well leave it as a monument of experimentation. Like those beatles songs where they got really fucked up on LSD and just played the same note constantly
>>
>>83986807
His comic looks like complete fucking garbage anyway, might as well let him learn through it.

there will still be fight scenes but they will be very rare and not the main focus anymore... i have my reasons for doing this and have been wanting to do this for a long time

instead of rushing from fight scene to fight scenes to show off each characters moves i just want to write and draw the characters and who they are and how the act and react to the world and the people around them ya know?

But that's only half of the picture. We’re interchangeably talking about the effects of DPI with PPI here (which, again, opens up a can of semantics worms, but it's down to the distinction between print and screen, which are not identical and should not be treated as such) and it’s drawing us into conversational circles. Also I’m using this post as a tutorial launching pad, so don’t consider this a personal attack or confrontation because it’s not. It’s just me pointing out things I see a lot and maybe helping people.

First and foremost, this needs to be stressed from a professional angle: if you have any aspirations for your work being printed, do NOT create documents based on pixel size, and especially do not do that with low DPI. That’s a huge mistake. If in the back of your head you think “well, it’d be nice to print this one day,” for god’s sake, stop selecting pixels as the unit of measurement when making a new document in Photoshop. It NEEDS to be inches.

And with that said, this is where DPI matters. When seen in the context of inches rather than pixels (and that was my mistake in simplifying the conversation with just pixels rather than bringing up inches, as DPI is fundamentally a discussion about print) DPI is insanely, hugely important to your documents. Yes, you can have a 1200x1200 image at 72DPI, and it will look fine on your site. But do the math, divide it up. In print (with the industry baseline of 150DPI), the density of dots are meager. You’re stuck with an image that maxes out at roughly 7”x7” before it visually degrades when scaled up.
>[con't]
>>
>>83997919
>[con't]
That can be fine for some, but imagine this scenario: You make a new document for your webcomic and set it to just look ok for your site, so it’s not all that big and is set for 1200x1200 pixels at 72DPI. Then, overnight, you explode with popularity, and one of the panels on the aforementioned document becomes your most iconic image ever. And now you’re heading to SDCC, and are making a 3’x8’ banner for your booth, and you want to include your iconic panel image front and center, but… that one little panel is printing out as 3.5” before it looks like jagged shit. Whoops! You fucked up, and no magic spell is going to fix it, just a lot of grinding away to redraw and soften what you can.

Now, imagine that you set your document up in inches instead of pixels for, say, 16”x16” at 300DPI. Same scenario, same drawn image, same booth banner requirement. Because you are at 300DPI, you can scale that fucker pretty big in print. It’ll go to twice its native size without problems when going to print, and with proper printing techniques could even be done up 4 times as large without breaking the visual quality due to the inborn large scale.

That’s pretty much it. That’s my case for high DPI. And also using inches instead of pixels when creating a new document. This is just my view as someone that worked in a print shop and is a graphic designer by trade.
>>
>>83996041
Always nice to see your stuff here.
>>

the same exact thing would happen if you made a 1200x1200 image at 300DPI
>>
>>83998139
Right, but again this is hopping in between conversation points and missing the bigger issue. By using pixels as your unit of measurement, you potentially shoot yourself in the foot, and DPI becomes a secondary factor of pain. A 1200x1200 image at 300DPI is 4"x4" in native relative size.

I had taken a few days off to try and straighten out the plot some more, but once I was done, I started feeling a sense of disappointment. It took a lot of the excitement away, knowing exactly what was going to happen. I think I'm starting to realize that it's better for me to go on in the general direction, but without a clear-cut destination.

Just thinking about how much I want to do feels overwhelming, but I will continue on.
>>
>>83998325
i guess my point is that right now big enough is big enough. it doesn't matter which one you use because the minimum decent drawing canvas size is also the minimum printing size at a decent DPI. it seems bass-ackwards to me to concern oneself with DPI when it's the size of the eventual print that decides DPI and until then it's all theoretical. changing the DPI doesnt change the image at all, and only one precise DPI is going to fit the image nicely onto a piece of paper.
>>
>>83998467
>it seems bass-ackwards to me to concern oneself with DPI when it's the size of the eventual print that decides DPI and until then it's all theoretical
But that's not true. There's nothing theoretical about DPI, it's actual numbers that you can plug in and ascertain what sizes you're going to get in real world prints.

I'm not laying this down like it's heresy to do a screen-readable image size at 72DPI, but people need to be completely aware of how incredibly limiting that is for real world printing applications. If you were to send an image to a professional printer and the PSD was made spec'd for screen, you'd be in for a rude awakening for what is delivered back to you.
>>
>>83998564
>what sizes you're going to get in real world prints.
yes, and since the real world print size is "the size of the paper" your DPI will end up being decided by that. it might be some wonky number like 280 dpi in the end. it might be 312. but if it looks pixely when you resize it down to 1000px for web, it's going to look pixely when you resize it down to the size of the paper.
>>
>>83998616
That's why you should make your images 300DPI to start with - lots of publications won't accept less than 300. If you happen to be working below that, you've just screwed yourself out of an opportunity. It's easier for you to determine the DPI of your image rather than letting your image determine the DPI.

Also not the same anon as the one above you have been speaking to.
>>
>>83998826
300DPI -and- whatever a page print size is. 300DPI on its own wont help you if you're, as you (oh, not you? the other anon) mentioned, working in 1200x1200
>>

>your DPI will end up being decided by that
Except that's structurally backwards. DPI of an image decides print size options, the paper is just the format by which it is laid out. I think that we're again having a bit of confusion where print and screen are being jumbled around.

To clarify: Professional prints are typically spec'd to be done at 150 or 300 DPI by the printing machine. This is done for clarity of image.

The image itself, when spec'd for 150 or 300 DPI, is created in inches, not pixels, so that not only do you have final image size decided, but you also have DPI to match the printer. There's no guess work to any of this, and it becomes clear why selecting DPI ahead of time becomes important.

>but if it looks pixely when you resize it down to 1000px for web, it's going to look pixely when you resize it down to the size of the paper
Except it won't for print, because the same level of fine detail seen in a square inch of large art will be retained in a square inch of a shrunken piece of art (i.e. if 1 square inch of a large image looks okay, 1 square inch (not a scaled 1 square inch) of a shrunken image will look okay). This isn't to say that you can use a magnifying glass and see into infinity when looking at a tiny shrunken printed image, but if the printer is set up for 300+ DPI printing the shrunken image will look sharp to human observation due to density. The restrictions between screen and print are completely different.
>>
>>83998861
I just mean in terms of submitting in magazines and anthologies - they usually request 300DPI. Different publications have different page dimensions, but the thing they have in common is they want images at a 300DPI resolution.
>>
>>83998861
>working in 1200x1200
Which is why I emphasized working in inches. This is key to the discussion going forward and will routinely be brought up because it is a necessary distinction to clarify things.
>>
>>83998923
why dont you just do the calculations, ascertain what the normal printing size is for a comic book (it's 8.5x11 isn't it?) multiplied by 300, and give the exact pixel dimensions all someday-printy digital image files should be.
>>
>>83999000

Right. This isn't that hard of a concept.

This is a webcomic thread - So I'm going to assume that if you want to print anything, it's going to be a fucking comic book. The average comic page bleed size is, as mentioned, 10.5x7 inches.

If you're drawing a page to be printed as a part of a comic book, make it 11.5x8 inches at 300dpi.
You don't even need to know the dimensions in pixels. It's irrelevant.

>Inb4 "But what if I don't want standard 10.5x7 pages?"

Working on the storyline for my webcomic

Night Walkers
Blurb
A string of murders where entire families are slaughtered at night leads detectives to investigate the local nightwalker community, a collection of emotionally shattered men who sleep all day and walk aimlessly at night to hide from a society that has broken them. The police are convinced that one of them in particular is the chief suspect, but as they hone in he cuts his last ties to society and goes fully underground, prompting a massive manhunt and mass arrests of nightwalkers.

What are the best places/ways to distribute porn comics? Are there online stores I can just offer it up with other authors? Or is the best way to go through my own domain or something? Because the latter seems like it'd be more trouble than it's worth.

About DPI, does anyone with printing experience know if it matters if your original is at a weird DPI that isn't a factor of 300? Like, will an image constructed at 512 DPI have issues getting printed at 300 DPI? Or is it fine so long as it's above 300?
When I started out, all the various page dimensions I heard from different sources got me confused so I just made my pages huge.

>>84002663
It's partially knowledge of perspective and practice, but the main thing is to make a conscious effort.
Every time you've made a sketch, take a few seconds to go "okay, is everything here the right size?" and measure everything before you move on to the next stage. It doesn't add a lot of time per page, and it's really effective.

>>83996819
Not really, short stories aren't fundamentally different from longer stories. The main thing about short stories is that there's less time for extraneous stuff like developing side characters, subplots etc. Throw away everything that isn't your main story.

what drawing tablet should i get?
>>
>>84004809
Depends. Probably a small, cheap one without a screen.
Screen tablets tend to be way more expensive than non-screen tablets, and big tablets aren't much better than small ones since you can just zoom in or out in the program. It's a lot easier to transport a smaller tablet, too.
If it turns out you wanted a bigger tablet, or one with a screen, you'll have wasted less money than if you buy a big tablet with a screen and it turns out you didn't need/want it.

Brand-wise, I've never heard anyone complain about a wacom.

The answer to this will never NOT be "Whatever Cintiq you can get your hands on".
The newer ones have become cheaper than the previous gen was on launch, and you can get an older model like the 21UX in pic for a fairly low price.
If your question is "What tablet should a beginner with little cash should get?" I'd recommend an Intuos or even a Bamboo, though I've never worked with the latter.

Of course, if you're retarded and gay like bones you could just smear feces on a clipboard and no one will be able to tell the difference.

It should be fine as long as it's both above 300dpi, and a reasonable size in inches (eg 8.5 x 11). It is better to scale down a large file, than to scale up a small one.
300 and 600dpi are common, industry standard values.

Help me with my major characters, i'm so bad at names

Detective 1:
Tough, recovering alcoholic, and the best detective on the force. Promised his wife he'd never work another murder case after the last one almost ruined his marriage and cost him his life after a suicide attempt, but after three mass murders in a month he needs to solve this case before it gets any worse. He's the main character and his life and sanity collapses over the story. tough bastard who can read people well.

Detective 2:
A younger detective who takes a lot of notes, much better at interviewing than detective 1. half "asian" and has a new girl every month. nice guy who can get people to talk

Detective 3:
A female detective who knows how to handle herself, on probation after violently beating a perp she claims sexually assaulted her, has no consideration for the rights of suspects. nasty person who doesn't give a shit what your "rights" are

Nightwalker 1:
Shell shock from the Bali Bombings where his whole family was killed in front of him and he got burns over 80% of his body, terrified of crowds. confirmed peeper, registered sex offender.

Nighwalker 2:
Fat fuck, eats constantly and is very fat. he's fat. fat. but he also knows all the other nightwalkers, a big fat pile of secrets who's nightly route is determined by which 24 hour fast food vendors are still open

Night walker 3:
Hoodie wearer, goes into the sewers and vanishes for days at a time, likes breaking into secure areas and taking momentos. into parkour and urban exploration. possible peeper.

Night Walker 4:
Also into Parkour, but doesn't get along with NW 3 or any of the others. tends to walk or even jog in suburban areas whilst listening to podcasts and audiobooks. even among outcasts he is seen as an outsider who can barely form the most basic of relationships.

any ideas on deciding names or additions?

you can't say both "portrays themselves as professionals" and "fails to portray themselves as professionals" in the same breath dude. nothing about this publishing company is deceptive in any way. any idiot knows what they're getting into, and chose it. once again i must question the wisdom of your multi-page updates. why not one page a day? that way people stay caught up instead of showing up to the site and being confused, havin to click 'back' a few times, and reading in the wrong order
>>

i really love your coloring and you have a good grasp on action and movement. However, i do feel like your pacing is slow, your comics usually have two or three panels per page, which while that's great for showcasing your art, its very slow. if you update regularly that slow pace can work, but itll take a lot of time. perhaps check out some other comics you like and analyze how many panels they use per page and see how you could apply that
its very obvious that you are improving! keep going!
>>
>>84011330
Yeah, if you're updating multiple pages at a time, you should really have them all on the front page at once.

I actually really hate it when the cover figures cover the title like seems to be common in comics and especially magazines
I don't think dewd listens to conventions like "you don't X" and that's one of the things he has going.
>>
>>84013034
>You don't shit yourself and sit around in it all day.
Things like these are not "conventions" - it's common sense.
For example, Todd McFarlane once said famously in his bio-doc that he realized how much time he and Capullo would save drawing if they didn't draw detail in areas that would be covered by word balloons.
Same idea here - you don't draw a cover just to cover a significant portion of it. You draw your cover with the placement of the title in mind.
>>
>yfw Blutrinity don't care. They're getting dosh from people desperate enough to get published they're laughing all the way to the bank.

When it comes to acting with a single username online, is it better to have a consistently boring personality constantly vigilant against saying anything that may upset someone to ensure you don't offend anyone and pick up drama, or to be so off the wall that nobody can seriously deduce your opinions with 100% accuracy? [Although ideally, Ernest blogposts on controversial political matters would stand on their own logical footing while opening up deflection by shitposting if anyone is upset by them.]

I'm genuinely baffled by what I should do.
>>
>>84013240
dunno how you havent come into contact with this yet in the field of art, but defining sound advice and professionalism as 'do what i say, which is conforming to the norm' is only going to encourage rebellion. try a softer sell.

>Am I able to do that through comicfury?
You should be able to edit the HTML of your front page to show more than one image.

For a less elegant solution that doesn't require knowing any HTML or CSS, you could just merge all the pages of the update together vertically as a single file, then remove that file in favor of separate images/pages once your next update hits (or just keep them in the archive that way forever if you want).

I know Tapastic supports uploading several pages at once, but it's not a site I've used myself.
