The Great X-Men Storytime: The Mutants Before X-Men

I'm Not X-Anon. I hope he won't get angry at me, but since there are shitload of x-books, it only makes sense to have shitload of X-Anons

But I felt like I wanted to contribute something really special. I want to storytime some mutant stories from Golden Era that predate X-Men, but at the same time feature common tropes developed by X-Men.

All by Marvel

Featuring:
-Origins of Namor wings
-Origins of Toro's powers
-First canonical X-Men character
-And Moar

and to make the tradition enough here is

It makes sense. In the Silver Age radiation pretty much replaced magic as the go to origin story. It was a dropped plot point from Lee's X-Men that radiation caused mutants

metahumans using their powers to just be better at a job is something Marvel/DC really lack. Especially After M day

I remember one of the victims was a mutant who was able to survive off radiation so he worked with NASA. He just living on a solo space station doing experiments then he lost his powers and died horribly

It's why I like a character like Cypher

It's worth noting that The X-Men were originally supposed to be called The Mutants, hence New Mutants, as a tribute to the original concept.

Apparently Goodman didn't like the name Mutants, as too complicated.

I guess that they became X-Men, because the letter "X" itself was very popular

Meanwhile both Prof X and Human Torch had teenage sidekicks / students. Both had disadvantages (one on wheelchair, other being an android). Both protected and served, and both believed in co-existence

before I post some bonus content, here is the source I used to learn some info
http://www.marvunapp.com/list/appmute.htm

some of the entries feel like a stretch, which is why I didn't include them (yet). however it's also the known list. it's very possible that there were more stories with characters like these, it's just that we don't know about them. the list keeps growing.

While Savage Land was first established in X-Men #10. There was this short Vision story (the original character) that was later retconned to take place in Savage Land. Again, in Marvel Atlas.

Whoever made that handbook was a fascinating specimen

I am thinking about storytiming Captain Britan, as with some Dracula stories written by Claremont, as they established the Excalibur cast

Children of the Atom had telepathic and mind power mutants,it's a old novel.
>>
>>83990114
some yes, other not.
classic mutants were closer to zombies, ie. toxic, radiated, deformed cannibals. not necessarily with powers, but more of a body horror freaks

I know, I will storytime some bits and pieces from alter ego 120 (fanzine by Roy Thomas), but give me a while.

and in regards to ninja turtles, aren't they actually called "Teenage MUTANT Ninja Turtles"?

I am wondering about doing Captain Britain storytime as a pre-Excalibur that would go as a spin-off to your threads (in the tradition x-books).

I only wonder when should I start.
>>
>>83990837
Oh yeah, Captain Britain, I couldn't be assed to find that stuff kek
I'd say wait until I finish Vol 4 since Excalibur starts towards the end of Vol 5.
>>
>>83990909
Okay. I will probably skip some of the early issues, especially if they are not featuring Betsy, and Black Knight / Cap Brit crossover, but I certainly am going to storytime the Alan Moore era, and Alan Davis' "Before Excalibur" TPB

I also do consider storytiming in future some selected issues of New Warriors, Power Pack, Ka-Zar (especially with Belasco) and Namor (Byrne's era), but I would have to decide which issues.
