Korra got partly screwed over by the team not knowing if they would ever get a continuation each season. At the times the conclusions of Books 1 and 2 aired they thought that was going to be the end of the show as it was. Books 3 and 4 were bought together so they were able to pace out 3 better, but even though they already knew Book 4 was going to be the last season Nick kept doing last minute screwups with their budget leading to the clipshow episode among other stuff.

With Voltron I assume they already have an idea of how long their story is going to last and whether they'll be able to get those episodes far enough in time they can pace the story and character development accordingly. Also Netflix is presumably lighter on standards so if they wanted to pursue anything they'd have more leeway to hint at it from the beginning outright rather than pussyfoot around and slam them together at the end when hardly anyone who didn't have confirmation bias noticed anything.

Also, the writers probably wanted the pilots to actually match their lions this time. In the original series Lance wore blue but piloted the red lion, Keith wore red but piloted the black lion, and Sven wore black but piloted the blue lion. It makes NO sense. It's very divisive. A lot of people are mad it's moving further away from "classic" Macross (even more than Frontier did), as the music angle this time is an idol group (and admittedly idolshit IS cancer).

I like it, so far it's pretty lighthearted. Frontier also started pretty light and it's probably my favorite of the series now. Just don't go in thinking "maybe it will be more like the old ones!" because oh man will you be mad.
