originally i was going to post a lengthy sob story about why im so stressed. and no nothing related to women could care less.

so here is the short version

Started drawing 2008 after recovering from a work related injury. didnt go to school for it just did all i could to study and draw. had a tumblr. filled out shit ton of sketchbooks with practices, ideas, character studies. even made my own characters.

gradually went back to the workforce. got worried about my art.didnt seem like no one liked it. started comparing myself to others. got the idea that my drawings were too conservative not "progressive" / "liberal" enough. tried drawing trendy shit like porn, flavor of the month cartoons yes even mlp. no one seemed to react to my drawings . doing this for years. job, expenses, my efforts , tore me down. got stressed out and cynical. no one gave me feedback, not even the poeple i looked up to. gave up drawing all together. gave away my artbooks threw away my sketchbooks. closed out my tumblr. this was about a year and a half ago.

Since then I went back to school and study electrical engineering. with the combination of my crappy full time job and school i average about 12 hours of sleep. no breaks. just alot of stress. recently got the yearning to draw again but im petrified to pick up my pencil again. i dont want to feel that feeling of being a hopeless failure again.

sorry needed to vent. im just going to fap and play europa universalis IV.

New untitled fangdangler comic script (rough)

A successful politician in the liberal party, joel demarco, is secretly a prolific serial killer. He leaves no evidence at all and has never been caught. He is extremely charming and charismatic, and has the support of the city. He becomes the mayor in a landslide victory over his opposition, conservative party leader amber williams. His platform calls for universal guaranteed income, dissolution of borders and regulation of the internet to make it safer, and is incredibly favored in the public eye.

Amber williams spends 6 months looking into the business records of joel demarco, finding numerous cases of sloppy bookkeeping and undocumented property deals. He looked the other way on several overseas land acquisitions, allowing buyers to falsify credentials and not pay taxes. She meets with demarco at his house to discuss these findings. He evades and denies everything, telling her to contact the property buyers herself, and that they are all legit and paying taxes. Amber leaves.

Eileen su, trainee female bodyguard in taiwan, is about to graduate her program and take on her first principal. She climbs dabajian mountain with her class and is branded at the peak with the agency’s symbol on her back. The next week she flies to korea to meet her principal, luna kim. the estranged wife of a korean software mogul who is now stalking her.

Amber holds a conservative party board meeting to discuss the recent election loss. Amber explains that demarco led a highly successful smear campaign against them, even when it came to free speech, their main issue, but nonetheless she has information that could lead to a large scale investigation into demarco’s shady business ventures. The board is sobered by the loss but interested in what she has to say.

New untitled fangdangler comic script (rough) pt. 2
Eileen and her principal are in israel to meet with an oil magnate. They fly back to seoul without any problem. When they are about to leave the airport, kim’s husband comes from behind and slashes eileen’s collarbone with it. She punches him in the throat, destroying his windpipe and spinal cord. He falls on the ground paralyzed and eileen collapses in the airport, bleeding out.

When amber returns to her hotel room with one of her assistants after the board meeting, the door clerk, her intern and her 2 bodyguards are dead, dismembered and skinned, all over her room. Amber’s assistant throws up. She backs out and walks away, out of the building and sits down. 15 minutes later police arrive, called by her assistant. A detective, Ed, Olson, tries to talk to amber, but she can't hear anything he says. Police tape off a perimeter around the hotel.

Forensic scientists then arrive and go up to the hotel room, where they determine that this may be the work of the killer they have been chasing for the past decade. He strikes only once every 2 to 3 years, and is somehow profoundly adept at home invasion, infiltration and subduing multiple people he is completely faceless, always leaving them physically destroyed with what seem to be a large and varied set of cutting tools. The detective thinks there is a reason amber was targeted, and that the killing was a message, and that she herself was deliberately spared. For some reason this killer is warning her.

New untitled fangdangler comic script (rough) pt. 3

At the police station amber tells olson everything that led up to that night and that she thinks it may be demarco telling her to back off. Olson doesn’t believe that demarco is or is colluding with, a serial killer, but he takes the files amber gives him and lets her go, telling her she will be monitored and protected 24 hours by police due to the seriousness of her connection with the killer. He then gives her the number of a special military level training school in taiwan, advising her to call them “if she can afford it.” Amber leaves the sation in an unmarked car. Olson then discusses the implications of what she just told him at great length with his partner, abraham waltz. They drink coffee and smoke cigarettes in a little room all night, going through the files amber found together and comment on how shady some of the zoning loopholes that demarco is using are.

The killer parks behind the municipal building and uses a key card to get in the door. Wearing a suit He goes to the 2nd floor and goes into the bathroom. He strips off the suit and folds it, putting it under the sink. Underneath he is wearing a plastic suit with a white plastic mask. He enters a large office filled with cubicles. A young man is working at a computer in the far corner of the office, and the killer comes up behind him. He taps him on the shoulder and when the guy turns, the killer stabs him in the face with a long, thin knife, puncturing through his skull. I told you to destroy those records. I told you.The killer throws the guy across the cubicle into the wall, and takes off his mask. It is joel demarco. I don’t usually do this. But i wanted to make sure you knew it was me. I want you to know, while i’m killing you. joel puts the mask back on and takes a boxcutter out, kneeling on the guy’s neck and carving his face up.

pt. 4

3 months later eileen gets out of the hospital, luna has been relocated to sweden under a different name, and there is a new principal she has been assigned to by the agency.
Eileen flies to canada to meet amber, who is living in a secluded house outside the city under police surveillance. All she does is work out in the house and cook for Amber. Amber tells her that all she wanted was to help people and make the world a better place, and that her life’s dream has turned into hell. Demarco’s smear campaign had silenced her, and now he may have used murder to push her out of the city and destroy her career forever. Eileen tells her she read the documents showing demarco’s dirt in ambers office and that she believes her. Eileen says she shouldn’t give up on fighting demarco, and that she wants to help.

Olson and waltz visit the sites owned by overseas investors that were mentioned in the documents. they can find no one to talk to.. None of the property companies answer thier phone calls or emails. Olson watches video of demarco’s speeches, analyzing his cadence and sentence patterns, his syntax, his eye contact, his hand gestures. His confidence. His ability to convince and advertise, his ability to spin narrative. He talks to waltz about this while watching the clips. They speculate on his possibly having a dark triad personality disorder, and how successful psychopaths are usually not physically violent. One point is that demarco never lashes out emotionally, never appears to lose his temper or say things out of turn. Publicly at least, he treated people quite politely and fairly, and this was appealing to voters. His platform was very anti- war, progressive and friendly. Waltz and olson both think that digging into demarco’s past could get them both into trouble, but if there is some connection to the killer, it’s a lead, and needs to be pursued. Olson decides to bring demarco in for an interview.

pt. 5

On amber’s request, Eileen goes to a bar whose parking lot is committing a zoning violation, and asks to speak to the manager. A man named alex comes out and talks to her, saying he is the manager. Eileen asks who the property owner is because Amber wants to investigate the land records, and alex tells her he will get the business card of the property owner. He goes into the back of the bar and doesnt come out. 15 minutes later 5 men in suits come through the door and tell eileen to get come with them. Eileen asks to see ID from them and one starts to decline, but as he is talking eileen smashes a bottle over his head and jams the bottle it into another one’s face. She simultaneously grabs the leader by the tie and shoves a gun in his mouth, taking him hostage and backing out of the bar with him. She forces him to get in her car and drive away. When they are outside the city, eileen gets him to stop the car. Pointing a gun at his face, she asks if he’s working for joel demarco. He says that he is, and he doesnt understand what’s happening, they were only ordered to go to the bar and escort eileen out of it. Eileen lets him go.

In the early morning Olson is woken up with a call from the chief of police. The municipal building is now a crime scene. The head of the zoning division has been dismembered and stabbed hundreds of times by the killer in the second floor office. Olson says he’s on his way and gets another call, this one from amber. She tells him her PI went to a bar on property sold by one of demarco’s subsidiary land developers and that her PI was attacked by men in suits who werent police. Olson gets out of bed and heads to the police station, calling waltz in the car
>>
>>83891311
pt.6
Olson and waltz interview demarco at the police station, demarco’s lawyer destroys them and says they have no probable cause for connecting serial murder to property fraud and tax evasion. They need to get a judge to sign off a warrant to search him, his vehicle or his house, and that will be impossible on the evidence they have. Olson says they can demonstrate relationships between demarco and all of the victims and that he has motive to keep his illegal business out of the public eye by shutting them up. The lawyer tells them they need some kind of connecting evidence for a warrant. Demarco says nothing.

Olson and waltz return to one of the sites owned by overseas investors that were mentioned in the documents and break in. they search the empty building. There is a hidden camera which catches them and the video feed goes to a screen in joel demarco’s office. Olson and Waltz go into the basement of the building and find shipping containers full of naked emaciated women. Walts starts to radio to the police station to report it but before he can finish the adress he and Olson are hit with tranquilizer darts.

I love your lines and sense of softness on the fur. I think the rightmost designs work the best because of the fuller jaw. As for the design itself, it's not particularly "piratety," which is something that I think you could take further. If you are looking for inspiration, I'd look at Aaron Blaise's stuff on youtube. He was one of the animators in "Brother Bear," and has a real grasp on the anatomy and mannerisms of bears.

>>83897649
You got some nice, smooth linework. One thing i would watch out for is the use of lines on the face. Considering how open the spaces between lines are for the rest of the body, it can be jarring to have more lines concentrated in the face, especially around the mouth.

>>83898697
Palettes are tricky. I tend to choose colors that are closer together on the spectrum, with certain vibrant colors used sparingly to add some interest.

https://color.adobe.com/create/color-wheel/

Here is a site that can help you understand the different sorts of relationships between colors and develop palettes. Try not to simply copy the colors you see, just use them as inspiration. Practice will make choosing colors by yourself easier in the future.

One quick note about the drawing itself- I like the style you have, but watch out for pillow-shading. Try not to simply shade borders of certain areas. Rather, establish your light source and figure out where shadows and highlights would realisticly fall.

I feel like I have no actual grasp of construction or something associated with it. I need to do more observational drawing as opposed to just knoodling around. I cannot convey the shapes I want well, nor can I twist and turn them as I like, nor can I really show them moving in a 3D space as I like. I draw very often every day, that makes it more frustrating because it becomes obvious as fuck I'm in one of those DA-style ruts

I'll get back to you tomorrow with some scanned stuff. That'll make things more clear.

>>
>>83920062
Writing is a hard sell which is why may artist/writers exist. It's hard to show off your writing because no one reads shit anymore. It's easy to show off a drawing or two but not so much something written unless the person likes to read random shit.
As for that last bit about the only way to prove oneself as a write is to make a book is bullshit.
You have many way to stretch your writing muscles. Like short stories, novellas, scripts, as >>83920354 mention fanfictions, many of these are different formats but there is a great learning experience in changing a short story into a spec script or a sketch into a novella. Having to stretch a story or condense it.
The biggest advice I can give you and as well to artist is: never feel like you're obligated to show anyone your work or write/draw for an audience.
Write what amuses you and just put it aside, then move on. If you get hung up on posting shit online or showing things off you can really fuck up the process of learning.

have you thought about doing a cross between a book/comic? I know how dumb that sounds, but hear me out. Instead of panels and dialogue boxes, you have a page or so of text, and a big picture to accompany it. Might be a good place to start. That way you could write some, show it to artfags, and get their interest, all while having the product that needs the art.
>>
>>83928317
wouldn't be hard if they become a hindrance, it's rather easy to manipulate line color if it's on a separate layer and all.

What up

What program are you using for animation?
>>
>>83929244
toonboom. I was using a (pirated)flash at first, but the smoothing tool pissed me off too much, and then I tried toonboom's brush tool. It was MUCH easier to work with. I'll pay for the 20$ a month license, pricey, but I can pay for it now that I have a job.
>>
>>83928975
fuck stigmas, as long as the story is sound it'll be good. Hell you might make it into a new trend rather than webcomics. Give it a shot.

Very nice, I love the hues you used and the color of the highlights! One thing I would watch out for is the center of gravity- her left side is leaning out a little far. The quickest fix would be to simply rotate the drawing a bit!

What sort of personality does she have?

>>83932079
This is a nice design. However, you need to keep in mind animatability. Simplify. Each lines you use to createll your character is a line that you will have to animate.

After you settle on a design, try to create a turnaround. Draw the character from the front, back, and both sides profile and 3/4s. Keep your proportions consistent and use guidelines. This will help you understand how the knight will appear in an animated space from any angle. But don't get ahead of yourself- be sure to finalize the design before attempting a turnaround.

>>83931647
Honestly, I have no idea.

I started off just doodling a bunch of random expressions, the went in after and gave some of them heads. The one expression the became Reese was oddly wide, so I had to think of a design that could contain it. She just kinda grew from there.
>>
>>83926552
Yeah I included her since that was a big inspiration. The effects are kinda complicated. Backgrounds are mostly animation of watercolor paints and glycerine on sheets of glass over a light table, then taken into after effects and turned into 3D planes to build the spaces. Some of those were also datamoshed to create some more digital texture. Then there were some other things I did by running images of walls and fabric and wood through audio editing software to corrupt them and turn them into those flickery colorful glitch things. And the swirly blue stuff at the end is just pointing an old VHS camera at a tv screen and recording the feedback it produces.
>>
>>83932927
Yeah I kept the fact that I have to simplify it in mind. Most of the designs I have cooked up are before I do all that. The Knights design is actually a lot more simple than it looks. I'll have a turn around for him soon

>>
>>83933795

Just keep perspective in mind. Sets of you lines should be roughly parallel. For example, the bottom edge of each block closest to the viewer should be nearly parallel.
>>
Realism isn't as important as being able to consistently be on model. Fite me
>>
>>83933871
Thanks for the reply! I've been trying to draw stuff with a sense of volume to them for a year, yet I still can't merge two organic forms together! Decided to start from the beginning with blocks.
>>
>>83933902
Depends on what you are creating, but generally, I agree.
>>
>>83933902
Being consistently on model is part of realism.

>>83933996
You should try really using perspective.
>>
>>83933996
Well, if you do have a drawing of two more organic forms interacting, I'd live to see one!
>>
>>83934037
you've got it the other way around. Realism is a part of staying on model, but it's by far the least important part since it's just an aid.

Copying styles is more important since style flexibility is important for tweeners and by far harder to learn. Too much realism beats that shit out of you.

Thanks a bunch for the replies!

The frog pic is something I drew a long time ago, but hate because of how flat it looks, and most of the folds and creases was me guessing. I dunno how people that can draw fat do it!

And the right side is me trying to intersect some spheres together, but I end up overthinking what parts overtake where and if what I'm drawing makes sense.
>>
>>83933795
just use perspective lines brah
>>
>>83934277
First off, that is some excellent line weight on that frog.

Second, for things like those spheres, draw the shapes one over top the other. Place full shapes superimposed over one another, and outline where they connect. You should be able to see through your shapes before you clean up.
>>
>>83934917
I'll try that right now. I tend to overthink what I'm trying to draw, to the point where I draw contours around everything, so maybe this will really help!

Okay, you seem to actually have a fairly solid grasp of proportions and foreshortening, especially in that above-the-collarbone torso drawing in your third picture. You have very loose linework- this isn't a bad thing at all. It give what you draw a much more organic appeal than it may have otherwise.

I understand that part of your frustration lies in the feeling that you aren't improving, and based upon these drawings, I think I can guess why. While none of what you are drawing is bad, not much of it is new to you. Each of these pages is filled with arms, legs, torsos, and the occasional figure. You are obviously feeling comfortable with these things, which is why you new to find something else to work on, something challenging.

When you practice, try to work on something new. Look critically at your own work and evaluate it. if you don't feel comfortable drawing something, that's the thing that you should be zeroing in on.

Another thing- try to see a few of these sketches to "completion" per day. What you have here is a foundation with nothing built on it. Draw faces! Add clothes! Accessorize! Anything you can do to push yourself.

I laud you for drawing every day. It's something I've been trying to do since Bojack and it has helped me enormously. If you are interested in this sort of drawing, take a look at Michael Hampton's "Figure Drawing: Design and Innovation." It's one of the best books I've found on the subject.

Keep it up man! I can tell you've got talent. If ever need help, just ask. I usually lurk in these threads, or you can message me on my Tumblr at dabble-too.tumblr.com. Hope this helps.
>>
>>83943944
Thank you very much.

I do try to look at all of my work critically at all times, similarly I've been kicking myself for not completing things for quite some time.

Clothing, faces, etc, or objects that aren't just people I often feel unsatisfied with. I feel like I make them very "mushy" or rounded, or else just generally distended in a manner that makes me feel like they're doughy rather than crisp like I'd like. I also need so work on defining hands and feet, because in drawing them to "completion" they often are disproportionate or otherwise distorted (e.g. hands are, for me, consistently too big, feet have toes which always feel wrong).

You would not know how many god damn pages of arms and legs I've made. Christ.
>>
>>83944051
Well, if you aren't happy with the way things like clothes and objects, then that's what you practice on. Try to draw fewer "things" and spend more time on each "one." Look at other people's work. There's nothing wrong with emulating a style- you can gain a deeper understanding of their approach and incorporate those methods into your own. Practice is pretty much the surefire way to get better. I know I keep saying it, I know you know it, but it's true.
>>
>>83944272
I will try to do this, I have avoided it on the logic that it would be turd polishing for me.

I do try to "copy, cheat, n' steal", but only rarely. I suppose I should do that more too.

What actually goes into becoming a cartoonist? Do you need a degree or does the art speak for itself?
>>
>>83950787
Not that guy, but... when I applied to Disney, they were looking for an art degree. But some studios, such as Titmouse don't mention anything about it. But of course, nothing's stopping you from trying cartoons on your own.

Yeah it good to have a degree (but I only recommend going to art college just to network/collaborate (of course there are always other ways to do that though). But if you got those friends in the industry, you're in a really good start. Their words + art + your personality in the interview is what really gets you the job.

>>

Same person:
I should also mention that when you get into the industry you don't just get a badge that said "Cartoonist" (unless your career is in comic strips) There are multiple sections in a animation team There's BG design, BG paint, character designer, prop designer, storyboarding etc. the list can go on. After years of working and pitching ideas, THEN you can be the "cartoonist" or in other words a creator of a show IF your idea gets picked up. You're more likely to become a creator on CN if you've been working as a Storyboard artist for years. Honestly, if you want to be a "cartoonist" the best way to do it, is just by doing your own thing and publish it which ever way you want.

Disney does it just to further filter possible applications since they probably get hundreds of day. If any Tom, Dick, or Jane could submit, they might get thousands a day.

The idea of having a degree is that you decided art was more than just a hobby, you went through the discipline of attending a school for four years, and it's a semi-decent substitute for recommendation.

Of course that's the IDEA of it, we all know many people graduate art school with shit tier skills. It's really just suppose to deter random deviantART artists applying.

One of the problems these threads tend to face is a lack of a standard OP like the "How's your Webcomic" threads. There have been a lot of these threads over the past month or so, but they die off fairly quickly since the title is usually something along the lines of "You know the drill" or "Batman demands it."

Beautiful piece. The lighting on the characters. The melted faces on the monster designs. The epic backgrounds.
The shading on those those (blue hills/water)? contrasts a little bit too much with the soft airbrush/ hard shading in the rest of the image. I'd say blend it a little more so it doesn't look as harsh in places. Maybe a bit more shading on the leaves closest to us to define the depth a bit more. Beyond that it looks fantastic.

After finishing my thesis film, I ended up not drawing for months because I was tired of drawing and feeling gross afterwards. Then I tried to get back into drawing and felt worse because I was super rusty.

I have year-old sketches that I've never finished sitting on the backburner as well as commission requests I've yet to look at and extra work I wanted to do for friends all while I'm trying to look for a contract-based job because I haven't had work for two months now and am running low on funds. But I keep getting rejected from places so I'm feeling a little dejected so it's a bit difficult to keep pushing myself to draw.

You'll go through random periods of artistic "I feel gross", sometimes you'll get out of it, sometimes it'll last forever. There's no telling what will magically inspire you. It never helps me when people say, "Just show your work!", so I don't repeat those lines back since they feel like pointless motivational poster images. I feel like it's better to know that everyone has an art hiatus, even if they don't intend for one, and if you hate the feeling, that's fine, it's a shitty feeling.

It's hard to get out of, but what usually helps me is just looking at reference pictures and very, very slowly drawing them for observational practice. It allows me to practice while not using my brain too much because I'm not thinking creatively, I'm just thinking mechanically.

I did it for this penguin drawing, then I tried to take it further by seeing how many different designs can I make out of this penguin drawing that I'll now use as reference to try and exercise the creative part of me. But shit, even this took me days of slowly drawing and I'll probably not finish it for awhile. And prior to this, I was playing Mario & Luigi for a week straight because I was getting bummed out after not finding work. Sometimes hearing other people's misery is nice to hear, so that's why I'm sharing it, this post doesn't really have an ending to it.
>>
>>83990180

What order were they done in? Were there others? Following left to right, then down, etc. the designs definitely get stronger. Always interested in the creative process and highways/dead ends people hit.

The only problems I have with it are the broken pillar and tree. The linework on the two central figures should be something to go by, i.e. varied in weight and exactly where they need to be. They're great. It's obvious you don't know where to place them when it comes at the other two, plus their position in the frame seems a little obtrusive. The perspective seems like it's a little janked too. I suggest redoing the tree at least, after studying what the grain in a tree looks like, and maybe removing the pillar altogether, the stonework in the background seems to do its job just fine. I love its slightly filthy look, overall, make sure you don't clean it up too much.
>>
>>83992357
>>83992687
Also, I'm not sure about the faux focus blur in the upper right-hand corner. It's leaning on effects too much and cheapens the rest of it. I'd say remove it altogether and work something into the foreground on the bottom right-hand side to replace the column, if you decide to. It would also lighten up the top of the frame and help give the picture sense of space.

You're too comfortable with three quarters perspective and profile, and that leads to "symbol drawing" or whatever they call it, which means you're repeating familiar movements instead of carving out something three-dimensional. The noses give it away. I like the ideas in general, especially the guy on the right from the shoulders up, but try to break up what you're comfortable with.

Rough, you just need a solid foundation though.

Grab a mirror and sketch your eyes in as many different positions as possible, then angles, and then move on to your mouth, etc. Do a couple pages of this. Mix in quick, ten second gesture sketches with longer, twenty minute beginning-two-end drawings. Just hammer them out, only focus on trying to understand the physical shape of the object and represent it. No drawing is sacred, so don't treat them like that. Make mistakes, it's good for you.

Some weapon hands for a shapeshifter I drew at work on my phone.

I'm thinking of redoing the texture on the left one so the lines go down the muscle grain instead of across since the shapeshifted limbs are meant to be similar to wood.

The left arm is supposed to be similar to a Mantis arm and can be used to hold onto people.

I've got a Note 2 so it's got a pretty good tablet built into the screen, and the newer models supposedly are even better. I'd recommend it for anyone who likes to draw on the go since it effectively gets rid of the need for a sketchpad.

Not sure if it's mine getting old, just the phone itself, or how I grip the stylus but it's not very good at doing long curves without going off course a bit so you kinda have to be sketchy with it; other than that I don't have many complaints except maybe not supporting layers on the default sketching app, which works out as a semi-good thing for me since I need practice drawing without relying on 500 layers in Photoshop.

question, how do we(artists) protect our work from these kinds of people? especially if both parties live in different countries?
>>
>>84003556
There's no real logical way to do it that doesn't border on insane paranoia. It's an unfortunate reality that if your work is good, someone somewhere is probably going to steal it. There's just not much you can do about it other than hope people will call it out when they see it.
>>
>>84003703
so in the end you just have to give it all and not care less huh?
>>
>>84004542
For the most part, yeah. There's not any reliable or reasonable way to stop the more determined folks. It's really best to just not actively worry about it unless you find it actually happening. Worst case scenario is a company in different country steals your art, and then you have no legal method of dealing with it, so it's best to just not plague your mind with it all day and night.

It kinda sucks, but what can ya do other than just not share your work, y'know?

It was an exercise in trying to make characters of various body shapes using the "Triangle, circle, square" template. Not entirely sure it was effective, but if I actually make this a thing, I'm tentatively calling it "The Loser Crowd".

>>
>>84029313

Thicker near corners and outward facing curves, thinner during long, straight lines and inward facing curves.

Except also thicken both ends of long, straight lines.

If you've got a bunch of short 'jagged' likes, make them thinner.

I've found three ways to approach establishing line weight. One is distance, and one is lighting, and the other is, well, weight.

For distance, keep in mind out far apart overlaying points are on your drawing. this is why borders tend to be thicker than the rest of the lines- there is more distance between the edges of the figure and the background than most anything else. This can also be done on a subtle level- when drawing a nose in say, 3/4 view, the lines neat the tip of the nose will be thicker than they are on the top or bottom.

Another thing to consider is lighting. This is fairly straight-forward. Well lit areas should tend to use thinner lines, and areas in shadow should use thicker lines. The changes between these thicknesses should not be abrupt. A single line should slowly transition from thick to thin from one end to the other, and vice versa.

The last thing I consider is weight, and how certain areas settle. Lighter things, like hair and clouds, should use thin lines, while things like rocks and buildings can use thicker ones. Once again, this can be used subtly, especially on figures. Just kept in mind where the bulk of the weight may rest.

Writefag here, posting a short dialogue exchange from a thing I've devoted way too much time to:

>Noah paused to yawn, drummed his fingers against the desk,

>and began taking the saw to his left wrist.

>“Holy—JESUS, NOAH!” Joe barged in the moment the jagged blade pierced skin, getting an only mildly irritated look in response to his sudden intrusion.

>“Can I...help you?” He blinked slowly, still gripping the saw by the handle.

>“What the hell do you think you’re doing?!”

>“Well, it appears he was in the process of sawing off his hand.” Justin commented.

>“Doing what?” Noah’s mouth fixed in a dull frown, moving the saw back-and-forth.

>“Right—right now! With the saw!” Joe pointed, increasingly fed up with Noah’s blase attitude.

>“This?” He sliced deeper, getting winces from the two of them.

>“Yes! The saw!” Joe snapped his fingers. “Confiscate it, Justin.”
>>
>>84031024
This isn't the place for this, and I have no idea what the context is or whether this is a script or prose, but the advice is the same.

I'm guessing you're going for a kind of absurdist humor. The most important thing to keep in mind is simplicity, no matter what you're trying to do. Cut out all of the fat, all of the extraneous, redundant information. If someone says something, you don't have to follow it up by spelling out what the reader already knows. It's like that "show, don't tell" idea. There's a lot of places where a proper layout can keep dialogue flowing without you having to point out who's talking. The other thing is to humble yourself a little and stop trying to be so clever. Simplify, simplify, simplify until you have the basics down. You can get a better affect with so much little.

>Noah paused to yawn, drummed his fingers against the desk, then took a saw to his left wrist.

>Joe stood in the open doorway.

>"Noah!"

>"Can I help you?"

>"What are you doing?"

>"Looks like he's cutting off his hand." Justin said.

>Noah frowned, the saw continued.

>"Doing what?"

>"That! With the saw!" Joe pointed.

>"This?" It bit deeper, their faces turned green.

>"The saw!" Joe snapped his fingers. "Confiscate it!"

>>
>>84032881
There are comic-related writethreads on here sometimes, and /lit/ has something like it now and then, but I would just stay away from boards altogether if you're trying to improve, or at least just these types. It's too full of teenagers trying to impress and it's hard to understand what's BS if you're just starting out, especially if you're young in general. Community is nice, I'm not going to downplay that, and it can really get you going creatively if you find the right one. My honest advice is to just read and write as much as you can, man. Start building up that long-term familiarity with the medium. And as long as you're improving you're doing fine.

Writing is an artform, right? Got bored and started up a barebones alphabet idea. The idea is that each syllable is a block: main vowel front and center, preceding consonants in the top left, succeeding ones in the bottom right. Writing is phonetic. My name, Ryan, is in the center. The short E (an "eh" sound) is the closest, so it's used. I literally came up with this in five minutes, so it's pretty stupid right now.

I was trying to clean up the line work and just get it over with at this point. Two huge design mistakes were the roof and the chimney, both of which were an monotonous, uphill perspective battle with no payoff, but at least the chimney was such a nightmare that it forced me to get creative with the climbing plants. The whole thing in general looks real wobbly. Moving on to anatomy and character design next, and that's where the real problems start.

I very much need to work on my portfolio and add more variety character design stuff to it, so I took my one character and drew it in 18 different styles. Here's some of them colored, I plan on finishing the rest very slowly over time. The second one's coloring isn't done.

I gave myself a secondary goal of trying to color all of these in TVPaint that way if I ever wanted to animate one of these, I have the brush tools to do so.

How do I git gud at drawing faces. As is, everything I do looks like a more rounded version of an anime face. When I try to add details, they always end up looking like starved ninety year old crackheads.

I feel like putting these pics up, but always feel like the on-model stuff is flimsy and there's not enough polish to it.

But thanks for the reply, man! I've been having this self-doubt for ages.

Because you are improving, so you can start to see more and more flaws you haven't noticed before
If you like what you have drawn for longer then two or three days, start worrying

where looking upward with the horizon line likely below the bottom of the canvas but the characters are being drawn as if we're above them. I'd grab some reference of people at a low angle and reconstruct the figures.

Mostly happy with it. The lifted arm is too small and the hand is tricky. Was imagining a a hubble repair then wanted to introduce an inverted alien shaking his hand.
