her power level is very inconsistent.
she always loses to emma in telepathy battles (even in spiderman and the x-men last year Martha/Nogirl deleted a memory from Rachel with a sneak attack), but then I remember her beating Thor with Mjolnir with her telekinesis perhaps in Avnegers vs XMen.

she was the perfect xmen to have a gay xmen, not Iceman.

A suggestion to Beta Ray Bill & Rachel teaming up to fight evil across the galaxy?
>>

If BWS had actually come back for LifeDeath 3 it would've been a fantastic end point for people to assign the X-Men

but if that had happened we might not've gotten all the lead up to and Outback Era
>>
>>83761184
No AvX relied entirely on the characters and reader knowing nothing about The Phoenix Force except what happened in the Dark Phoenix Saga
>>
>>83761209
Oh that, sorry, the punctuation made it really unclear.

Even then, didn't the Phoenix only go Dark Phoenix because Mastermind was constantly fucking with its mental state?

You're right. It relied on character forgetting plot points from the only plot it was following

For fucks sake Scott and Logan talk like Jean actually died in that story and the retcon never happened

A few of us were talking about how much joining the X-Men was due to Rogues fear of herself and how much was Carol's mind influencing her to be a better person.

This page really makes that interesting.

Rogue is pretty clearly damaged goods without a second person in her brain, how much one influences the other is interesting.

I don't like Rogue at all, but I find the psychological play out to be interesting.

This happens at the same time as Maleketh unleashed the Cask of Ancient Winters to usher in Surtur's return, in a bit arc of Thor.

Oye...
Given that the Marvel Universe is a place that has magic as a practical reality, the notion that native peoples would have working knowledge of spellcasting, in keeping with the IRL cultural traditions of the different tribal nations, isn't inherently racist.
There's a lot of other casual unrecognized racism in the writer's worldviews that gets a free pass because of the era when this was all written. I say it's not that offensive.
>>
>>83764347

First: Rachel's powers ARE inconsistent, when she had the Phoenix force all her powers were supercharged and when she lost that she still had residual Phoenix but still had to relearn how to have significantly lower power levels and still do all her tricks.
Second: She loses these telepathy battles because she doesn't know all the tricks, Emma is an Xavier level telepath who can and has gone up against the Phoenix, plus she fights dirty, and the Spidey class psychics were basically pulling a mental bankheist/slight-of-hand trick. And they did get caught. Plus, like was said before: she never needed to learn any trick beyond muscling through with the Phoenix Force. So she's not ready for some things.
Third: Telekenesis is not the same power as telepathy, these are two different abilities entirely. Hellion is a telekinetic who has no telepathic powers and the precog Blindfold has some telepathic powers without any T.K. so Rachel's powerlevels in one don't reflect the other at all.

And Bobby makes an ideal gay guy, you just need to remember that every snarky comment and bad joke he's ever said was said with a southern accent. That's pretty gay. And Rachel can be gay. It's not a quota system, someone else can be gay too even if Iceman finally came out. You can keep your headcannon, and I'll keep mine about the Kitty/Illyana/Peter threesomes.

None of these pages are digital color, it was all watercolors back in the day.
And with that you had to wait for one color to dry before doing the next, otherwise you would get unintentional color bleeding.
So this guy, on a deadline, would routinely have dozens of pages from different books and issues laying aroud half-finished waiting for things to dry.
Lots of mistakes just like this got made back then that weren't caught before deadline.

That mistake is only in the digital scan, the paper version is fine. It has nothing to do with watercolors.

This isn't watercolors, they printed them with screens. Watercolors don't leave dot patterns.

They reference it at times, I think she was even a contender for Sorcerer Supreme when Doc Strange lost the title, I know they mention it sometimes when there's a crossover like that.
She can lift Thor's hammer, Mjolnir, and the question then was if it was because she was just a worthy mortal or if she's a legit goddess of weather. That was never answered.
Then there's the question of if her mutant powers are magic in nature, like Scarlet Witch's and Magik's are.
It's a whole thing.
>>
>>83764642
What does this have to with religion?
>>
>>83765058
Most real life magical traditions were also at one point religious/metaphysical traditions. They're often tied closely together.

Native American "magic" is based 100% in their spiritual world view: The world is full of invisible but powerful spirits, performing rituals to ask them for favors get's "magic" done. There is no line between the two.
>>
>>83764978
I forget that while a mutant, Forge has nothing to do with the X-Men at this point in time. I'm used to him being a close ally.

>>83765111
Gyrich knows where the X-men live, but he is unlikely to have a reason to share that information with Forge.

Fairly or not including lesbians is not seen the same way as including gay males. I can understand Marvel wanting to show that they're willing to include gay men in a prominent role rather than give the same storyline to a woman.
>>
>>83764276
>can you imagine seeing those issues for the first time in 83
I can because I did
>>
>>83765024
>This isn't watercolors, they printed them with screens. Watercolors don't leave dot patterns.

The colorist painted copies of the boards using a palette of 16 watercolors. These were sent to the printers with instructions as to what combinations of the watercolors were used, and the printers manually converted those to process color CMYK and hand-cut halftone CMYK overlays.
>>
>>83764212
Wow, so before trolls had /co/ they sent their venom directly to Marvel?
How efficient.
>>
>>83765340
It's weird how lez gets a free pass in a few (very) specific situations but a gay guy is this big horrorshow that demands public outcry.
Don't get me wrong, it still kinda sucks how the Storm/Yukio ship was relegated to inuendo and an undefined moral outrage on the part of Kitty, but look how long ago that was deemed an acceptable storyline in a major name comic.
Bigots need to get their heads straight about what's more important to them: Their homophobia or their sexism.

While political correctness was budding like crazy back then - it hadn't polluted the world entirely yet.

You're trained to be paranoidly sensitive to and all hints of perceived racial/cultural traits - and when they show up, be all angry on behalf of the poor sods.

It must be hell growing up in these times.
Sex is forbidden unless you're married and at least 34 years of age.
Any deviation in skin colour from, say, a milky pink must be treated like a rotten egg.
Any cultural trait must not be pointed out, lest you're a villain.

Or here's an idea: you're trolling WAAAAY off thread topic right now, so stop whining about how you aren't allowed to say mean things to people who haven't done anything to you without someone calling you a bad person.
Because your special little white snowflake shit stinks.

Lifedeath 3 was a scam; BWS flat out wanted to pull a Reggie Huddlin and steal Storm from Claremont/X-Men and make her an African-centric Sword and Sorcery type hero set in modern days.

We dodged a bullet with Marvel editorial telling BWS to fuck off with that idea, because Claremont would have quit the X-Books and there would have been chaos in the X-Titles far sooner than the early 90s.

>>83761248
>>83761248
Not really; the issue with AvX is that the Scott fags willingly refused to remember that Hope was destined to commit genocide and bring about the bad future. And that historically, the Phoenix drives people batty as shit and that even Rachel couldn't handle it fully, as it put her in a coma and had to be schooled by Galactus into not abusing the power of the Phoenix Force (something Scott refused to do).

>>83761301
They were talking about the Phoenix mini when they talked about Jean/Phoenix as far as the Phoenix resurrecting Jean again and the X-Men having to nuke her corpse to stop it.

Blame Jim Shooter. IIRC Gyrich was named/based off of his father-in-law and the plan was that Gyrich would eventually be considered "right" by everyone because Shooter loved his father-in-law and saw him as the surrogate dad he never had (Shooters' own dad was a worthless drunk who didn't give a shit about Jim unless it was to steal the money Jim made writing comics for DC as a teen to buy liquor) and that everything he did was right, even if the heroes hated him for it.

Of course, Shooter never did do the pay-off to this and when he left Avengers, the writers who replaced him upped his assholeism to such a degree that Shooter forced the writers who replaced him, to stop using him (which led to his replacement being hands off and loved by the team for not being a shitlord).

But Claremont and Bill Mantlo, who hated Shooter, basically turned Gyrich into a complete monster: Claremont by having Gyrich be the one who shot Storm and stole her powers, while Mantlo, in the climax of the Dire Wraith storyline, had Gyrich openly attempting to use a much bigger planetary version of Forge's power stealing device, to strip ALL of Earth's heroes of their powers, even if it would kill them all (as the device was supposed to kill/depower the Dire Wraiths). Forge and Rom had to kick Gyrich's ass to stop him.

Shooter never forgave Mantlo for that, hence why Shooter forever is badmouthing Mantlo and making shit up about him online.

PAD and Geoff Johns eventually "fixed" Gyrich to what Shooter intended (PAD gave him a freudian excuse for being a shitlord, in the form of a dad who had alzheimers and Johns' Avengers run was one huge apologia towards the Shooter run/post Shooter run usage of Gyrich complete with Gyrich proving himself a good guy by helping them stop Red Skull and apologizing to Hawkeye and Falcon for ruining Falcon's credibility via firing Hawkeye for the sake of virtue signalling by way of making Falcon an outright affirmative action hire to the team.

Carol stayed Carol until Busiek put her back on the Avengers in 1998/Avengers #4 and rebranded her Warbird/retconned her Binary powers "fading" so he could go back to her classic look.

Also, Carol stays in space until Operation Galactic Storm; she ends up saving the sun in the Quasar issues of that arc and gets taken back to Earth by Quasar to recover. She then appears in Avengers #350-351 as Binary and basically quits from the Starjammers when two of the crew try and assassinate Black Knight for the Kree and she has to lie to protect them from reprisals when Dane gets stabbed as a result.
>>
>>83762631
Carol didn't influence her so much as Rom (in her guest spot with him, Rom had a major effect on Rogue when he saved her and Mystique/Destiny) and Mastermind, who was mindfucking Rogue with visions of Dazzler to try and get her to kill Alison in a jealous rage so she would go to jail for life for murder.
>>
>>83763044
Forge doesn't know about Xavier since he's a third party mutant at this point with no ties to other major mutants.

Also, he's kind of scared that the X-Men will harm him if they find out that he made the device that stole Storm's power
>>
>>83766427
Northstar might have been first. Not really sure on the timeline for either.

>spoiler
Claremont was writing the two of them but then the book got canceled so the next writer had to play clean up. Editorial might have been involved.

>>83766214
Iceman being gay was extremely poorly written. Bendis didn't actually give a fuck about telling a good story or respecting LGB people, he just wanted to push out the story so he could get the diversity points.
>>
>>83770345
>he just wanted to push out the story so he could get the diversity points

There's a reason he saved it for the last issue. Writing a 25+ closeted man who has had multiple het relationships would require some actual research and planning.

>Carol didn't influence her so much as Rom (in her guest spot with him, Rom had a major effect on Rogue when he saved her and Mystique/Destiny

I'd like to read this! Well, I like Rom in general, but I never heard of this before.

I think our speculation on Carol's impact is just that, speculation. Unless Claremont comments on it (or someone can find where he has in the past), I think how much Carol subconsciously influenced Rogue's decision is up in the air.

Really it is in the realm of interesting fan theory stuff. It is just the last two story times here (her "losing herself" to Carol's memories a few issues ago and now how Storm impacted her thinking), they just add fuel to the theoretical fire.

IIRC he's brain dead; Brubaker ripped off the Thunderbolts storyline where Gyrich gets loaded up with nanites that make him carry out murderous fantasies about killing super powered beings by way of corrupting one of Cap's friends (this time D-Man) and unlike the last time, the nanites didn't get safely removed and they left him mindless
>>
>>83777120
The only impact Carol had was that her thoughts drove Rogue batshit crazy and not in a good way. And later stories flat out stated that the Carol persona hated Rogue to such an extent that she had zero qualms about usurping control over her body whenever she wanted to, going so far as to toss all of Rogues belongings in the garbage and replacing all of her furniture and belongings with shit Carol liked instead. Let alone the first thing ghost Carol did when the two split in two, was to try and murder Rogue and that was BEFORE Shadow King got his hands on Ghost Carol and added her to his brainwashed minion army.

The Rom issues are #30-32.
