Starting with a question from the last thread: what kind of ink / ink-pens do you use?
What are the best brands?

If you do it all digitally, do you have a drawing tablet?
What are the best brands?
>>
>>83535358
I do everything digitally, use an old wacom intous tablet.

Hiveworks deadline is coming up, anybody here submitting to it? What are you planning on sending in?
>>
>>83535405
I bought a middle-prized wacom tablet recently. It was sold as new but the code for the program package was expired. Now it's just a useless chunk of plastic.

Any idea where I can steal the program package?

>>
>>83535472
No clue. If it's an old one you probably won't find it anywhere.
>>
>>83535358
I can't comment on other brands, but the wacom intuos I've had for the past six years works just fine despite going through a lot of rough handling and transport in that time. I did have the nibs on the stylus run down and had to buy replacements, but if I hadn't lost the extras that came with the tablet that wouldn't have been a problem.

What? Do you mean the drivers? Those should be free on the wacom site.

I'd love to do it for the sake of free website design, but I want to be able to rake in those sweet waifu patreon bucks at some point, so it's probably not a good idea.

The Pentel Pocket Brush Pen is the main brushpen I use. It's a go-to for a lot of pros. Excellent weights and variation in line, and refillable. You can't go wrong with it.

As for fineliners the Faber Castell PITT pens are the usual industry standard

It's pathetically easy, and is likely just there to confirm you actually did your pages instead of stealing them.
>>
>>83538813
Oh, also, they're not comparable.
A 250 word script isn't going to give NEARLY as much information and nuance as three pages of thumbnails.
>>

250 words is like two paragraphs. It's barely enough to plot out two pages unless you Marvel Method it. Heck, this post is 25 words.

Everybody knows Alan Moore writes whole chapters for every panel, but it doesn't mean it's a good practice, writing comics is not "the more words you have the better".

When you write a script, the important thing is to pass to the writer your intentions, and you could waste his time writing a whole gigantic paragraph where you describe the unfolding of events like you were writing a book to the reader himself, on how in this panel this character is creeping on the scene, and he feels a shiver run through his spine when he sees this thing on the background that is beyond his wildest imaginations and he has these conflicted emotions, and he is kinda angry, but kinda skeptic, all before realising he is sad at the point of breaking up crying only to THEN reveal he is looking at "this character" dead body, or you could simply write "dude, our hero is walking into this scene and finding out this character's dead body. he has this expression on his face, he is feeling this way.
dead body in the foreground, our hero in the background" and the effect to the reader would be the same.

Your artist doesn't need surprises, he needs to know from panel 1 where this page is going. Most of this description will be lost in translation and will only serve to distract the artist from the most important shit to be portrayed on the panel. The artist will sketch the page, and every time he wants to remember what he was supposed to illustrate there he will be welcomed by an exausting wall of text.

How much direction are we talking, though? I'd like to see how much direction other writers in /hyw/ give their artists so I can see how differing levels of detail work for others.

Pic related is an example of the average amount of direction I give in my scripts (issue 2 page 4 if you want to compare). I'd say this is a pretty good representation of how much direction I give on average. Sometimes I'll have ultra-specific directions and sometimes we'll just go full-on Marvel Method (issue 1 page 13 is an example of this) but usually it's pretty much just like this.
>>
>>83540052
>writing comics is not "the more words you have the better".
Nobody said this.

>the important thing is to pass to the writer your intentions
I don't think anyone would argue against this.

>"dude, our hero is walking into this scene and finding out this character's dead body. he has this expression on his face, he is feeling this way.
dead body in the foreground, our hero in the background"
Well hey there, composition and body language! I think I mentioned those over here
>>83539002
and used Moore's writing as an example of using these things.

Also, 37 words for a splash page..unless you're trying to say that's all a writer should give you for a multi-panel page. Because if that's what you mean, your writer is fucking worthless because they aren't even writing the story beats.

>Your artist doesn't need surprises, he needs to know from panel 1 where this page is going.
Again, nobody would argue this.

>an exausting wall of text
And here's the problem: nobody ever implied that a script should be like that. The entire point was that 250 words for three pages is laughable if you want an idea of how someone works. If they meet it, it'll be so sparse that it reflects poorly on them. Now, they shouldn't write a fucking 700 word document on three pages, don't get me wrong. I'm just saying 250 is comically low, like asking for a two image thumbnail. There's not enough substance there to discern anything. Even 300 wouldn't be that bad, but 250? Fucking please.

>>
>>83541261
>I'm just saying 250 is comically low, like asking for a two image thumbnail.

Maybe the 250 words script is more based on single creators who do writing and art but work with scripts instead of thumbnails?
Because in that case you already know what your intentions are, so don't need to spell everything out and the script might end up shorter. They're probably just setting very low requirements to avoid disqualifiying someone with a decent comic who doesn't really plan out their pages all that much.
>>
>>83542418
It should be noted the 250 word requirement is the minimum. I think they would expect most people to go beyond it.
>>
>>83542120
I like the cleaner version with more line-weight better - both with and without color.

No lineweight can also work, but imo that looks best if it's very minimalistc. Cleaner lines, flat colors, that sort of thing.

the left just has better shapes, that's the thing. the right has more lines, but the actual shapes are inferior (at least th ehair) and the lines under the eyes add nothing.. the poofy fluff actually look sworse on the right due to fewer lines (right? or at least, looser lines)

To be honest though, all you need is something that'll make a mark on your paper. There's some great artists that don't even use inks and just edit their pencil levels in Photoshop to make them as dark as they can. I think it gives it a very nice feel to it.

Nice info on writing and scripting you had, anons. I was told by two writers that it's alright to write the whole story as a novelization, tnen script from it (not necessary, but a good idea). i'm doing that on my two original stories, but to be quite honest, it's a pain in the ass. I started Jasper Gold 4 times in total. Twice it started as a sci-fi/westerner
Then once as a full on westerner.
Finally one last time again as a full on westerner, but with a different story plot.

Before I drew the story that you see today, I was conflicted with what kind of story i wanted to do. I must have drawn and inked at least 40+ pages before I was finally satisfied with what I had now.
Best thing you can do is to not get ahead of yourself. Take your time to plan out and outline your story. Jot down the basic plot points and story breaks till you are satisfied with what you got. Then move on to scripting/thumbnailing (depending if you're more a traditional comic maker or the visual story teller type). It will save you a great deal of headache, disappointment, and frustration.

Protip: it's a good idea to have a folder dedicated to comics/stories/images pertaining to the kind of story you're doing. I have an inspirational folder in my laptop and phone for those days when I'm feeling pretty uninspired. Perks me right back up to jump back in.

I'm currently on my way to kill a story I've been doing for almost five years, due to feeling unsatisfied with it, and also to try new stuff, so I know the feeling.
My advice would be to stop when you feel you're not going anywhere, and set sail in a different direction.
But I do acknowledge that commitment and discipline can help you face any hurdle, so ask yourself if you can keep the ship floating.

>>
>>83547461
>Any tips on how to break out of it and just commit?

Make short comics to start with, one to five pages. Use them for practice, and get experimental with them. If they're self-contained, it doesn't matter that Strip A uses a different style and technique to Strip B. Being short, they're easy to finish, and you get used to telling a complete story concisely, instead of meandering and going nowhere for ages.

When you're confident you know what you're doing with short strips, then start building up to longer ones.
>>
>>83547461
>unsatisfied with your art and the inexperience of making a comic

yup it happens to me all the time, the only way to fight it is keep drawing and practicing untlil you feel good with your art, i already had 4 pages ready to begin my comic but after a while i realized that i can draw them way better and make the storytelling way better so now im re drawing them for like the 3rd time, it is frustrating but it also made me realize how much i need to get used to my tablet and how much i need to get better at drawing perspective, also i want to get my art as good i can before i start uploading pages to reduce the cringe i will feel when i go back to the firts pages in a few years

That is wonderful advice! I do have a inspo folder for my comic, and I love screen capping advice like your comment from threads like these. I had to look up your comic and your art is extremely charming. Do you just use traditional inks or do you create pages digitally?

>>83547577
Thank you! That is a different way to look at it, you stop drawing the comic, you kinda kill the characters. That may morbidly fuel the fire to keep going.
>>
>>83535358
Inks: Copic Multiliners. Best because you can erase pencil and the lines won't fade. Even better because you can use Copics over them and the ink won't fade. For paper, Deleter comic paper or smooth Bristol. I used to use Uniball pens, but after getting copics I never went back.
Digitally: Cintiq and Surface Pro 4 for on the go. I love my Cintiq but too many damn wires. Would have gotten a Cintiq Companion but way outta my price range. Clip Studio Paint for creating comics.

This is what I've found works best for me, but I'm a strong believer in it's not the tools you use but your own personal skill.

well then take a step back and just draw them dicking around on your paper. they can wait to be in a comic til you have all the right ideas.
i forget what issue you're having, but i like to, whenever i'm watching a show or something, question what would happen if it went differently. what if they avoided that same cliche that they always do.. could i do a story like that

I got into drawing comics about two years go as a hobby, two years later I'm still working on the same story and I haven't even gotten past the first ten pages. I never really showed my work to anyone so I didn't feel bad abandoning it and starting fresh whenever I felt I learnt something new and wanted to apply it. The story has changed completely from what it first was, but I still carry on a couple stylistic elements. It's been fun.

Pic related, oldest most embarrassing version I got.

I would advise you all to strongly resist the urge to redraw early pages, keep going forward. Dave Sim would never have reached issue 300 of Cerebus the Aardvark if he kept going back to redraw page 1 of issue 1.

When you complete the story and are going to release a collected edition (whether print or digital), then you can think about redrawing pages to unify the art style. But complete the story first, and you won't do that by going backward and starting over again.

(By way of example, Jeff Smith and Osamu Tezuka redrew pages for the collected editions, but only after the strips had originally been published.)

hehe, meta. It's good when you notice you're doing something repeatedly. Mine tends to come from offpanel.
panel 4's dialogue is a mess, but i'm not sure how to fix it. exactly what is he trying to say? like 'i believe we had a deal, we shook on it' ? and you don't 'see someone for their services'
man, mad anna has some wild-ass eyebrows. also cute as fuck pajammers. I feel like the tail should be poking out of, and lifting, the buttflap. though traditionally buttflaps open downward, like a ramp, not upward like a garage door, which is what you've drawn since you put the buttons on the bottom.

This is my third attempt.
My first try at it was in black & white, but I wasn't confident enough at Chiaroscuro so that it looked kinda like a coloring book. It was decent for a first try, and chapters were just 3-5 pages long.
The MAIN concept of a cursed frog knight and a fairy traveling around and meeting a bunch of folklore monsters was there, thoguh the first arc was about elves.
Second try only lasted 7 pages and was more of a remake of a previous chapter. But it was my second attempt at a colored comic and not bad for the results I got.
This one has been going on for 103 pages, and the closest I have to a satisfying comic. Even now, I WISH I had done some things differently had I known how much space I would have had for some events and arcs. Even the current arc changed A LOT from it's first inception. But I think what really pushed me was that I was 24 when I started this version, I didn't think I would have been able to try again in my late 20's.

>>83547660
Well, I DEFINITELLY want to put in the CG in the third story arc.
The Sisters would be nice but it'll be hard to make them fit in. They'd probably be in a Witches' Sabbath, or female Druids, or something...
Saha, Hel, and Fenir from KDN could fit into it once I bring back warewolves, but that'll probably take a LONG while and KDN will be finished by then, so I hope CF has another Fantasy-adventure comic going.

this guy's right though dewd, if you have any energy left over at the end of the lineart stage of a page, it's a good idea to redo some of the lines. 7th panel's hand, 4th panel's nose maybe, those are decent candidates. still, I think at this point you've solidly moved past the 'this is just ugly' phase. looka dem faces. they all have the eyes the right size and shape and everything.

I think your work looks a lot stronger without the clean up lines. They tend to flatten the image and remove the sense of volume that the sketchy layers give on their own. It's such a huge difference that I thought the first page was drawn by a different artist before I hit the girl on the second page. It's an incredible difference - I never noticed how strong your painting was until I saw it unobscured.

Your raw style is really painterly and nearly naturalistic, which is why I think the linework is jarring and brings down the quality of the work so much once applied. Maybe you feel inclined to add it because comics are typically "cartoony", but there are lots of painterly comics out there that look great and don't utilize a linework layer, just paint (Lackadaisy Cats comes to mind, but there certainly are others...) in case you felt that not applying linework would somehow imply laziness on your part - I think it would allow your strengths to come to the forefront.

Pretty sure it has cropped up in earlier threads.
The Sisters has, for me, always had a Polaris, Semisonic, classic R.E.M., Stone Temple Pilot vibe going on for much of the core cast, with Amboy Dukes, Redbone, Poppy Family stuff when it comes down to the bad guys. .

Like it helps on some level that the two casts as they are happen to be from different time periods. The occult/cult side of it is supposed to hit on a Satanic Panic, turtlenecks and kool-aid, Manson Family 60s/70s; whereas the girls and company are supposed to feel like they're sort of a downbeat but uplifting group that might be scrappy enough to get through it all.

Mostly just felt like posting some sweet tunes. This week's update to the Sisters should be fun. Dan and Eddy meet. And Beatrice introduces a Necromancer.

I can work with that. ATM I am planning to have Vampires and Warewolves show up in the... 5th story arc, unfortunatelly... I know, long wait, though it shouldn't be TOO long before a group of fairies shows up again, so I think it'd be possible to have Robin in the BG.

funny how she's a half-fairy but because she's VISIBLE and not just a glowy ball with wings, and because the fullblooded fairy left the cast, she's the token fairy now. Represent your mom's peeps, Robin!
Though proper fairies in my mythos actually do have bodies, separating them from pixies which actually ARE glowy balls even when viewed close up.. what am I talking about now?
I wish I had her transform more. It's funny and shit. but it's also hard to follow without devoting extra panels to it. if I ever make a cartoon someday it's going to be just nonstop funny transformations, even for no reason, just in the backgrounds.

paneling is definitely something I'm having trouble with, I kind of just want to have a 1 panel page like ava's demon.

also I very well might draw rocks in every panel, it's pretty rocky by the coast and the main PoV character is by the sea. even in the woods there are plenty of rocks.
>>
>>83595158
I really like that format, thats what I did for my first comic and its way chill. I'm just trying panels n pages now to mix it up cause I've never really done it before
>>
>>83594791
I don't think people will mind.
If you're really bothered by it, weren't there a bunch of places in the US where slavery was never legalized in the first place? If you want to avoid the topic, it would be perfectly reasonable to have the story take place somewhere with no slaves around (unless it's set on a cotton farm or something).
>>
>>83595249
I wanted to have one of the main pov characters be a slave doing logging and the like, he end up finding out he's the bastard son of the slave-owner and after his father and stepbrother(who's white) get offed by goatmen he sets off on his own as a kind of runaway.

If I wanted to avoid the issue altogether I could have the time period be set earlier, but since it's a loose basis on the world as it was, I could just axe it altogether in favor of solely having indentured servitude or something. I think that's a cop-out though. I just need to work on it, because it's pretty ingrained in the setting I think. I'll also be having vikings up north in vinland, who'll have slaves of all kinds.

I'm afraid I want to do too much with the comic.
>>
>>83594328
To specify, when I say "I won't be working on the comic", I mean the pages directly. I'm taking a break from pages precicelly to improve.

>>83594791
>I wish I had her transform more.

Man, I think i've had Gwanwyn transform in EVERY chapter since her introduction, be it intentional or not. She' actually quite fun to draw because of that.

>>83594791
The of people who actually get offended by someone knowing history is actually very tiny, You're worrying over nothing.
>>
>>83595352
Yeah, you're gonna have to deal with slavery if your want a slave main character.
Might be neat to explore the differences between slavery practices of the various places. A logging slave in the northern states would have a really different experience to a cotton pickin' slave in the south to a Vinlandian thrall in Newfoundland.
>>
>>83595535
that's what I'm hoping to show. since it's medieval I want a PoV character from the north to be invited to an affluent southern gentleman's castle, where there are a shit ton of slaves picking cotton and then there's a dispute between the two which leaves the northern dude having to face the rich guy in a duel with sharp rapiers.

>>83595695
That's an interesting premise.
What do you mean by medieval, exactly? Rapiers seem like they'd be more of a mid-to-late renaissance thing.
Were you intending to have various cultures be at different time periods, with the viking types still being dark age viking types, or would they be updated to something like the later Scandinavian kingdoms?

>>83595716
Just say your stylus broke or something, or don't give a reason.

You know, it sounds liek you're doing more or less the same thing I do with my world (I mean having cultures which historically would have never met one another either beceause of geography, or them existing in different periods, etc...), which I totally dig.

Like you said, you could replace slavery with "servitude", but I agree that's a cop-out.
>>
>>83595905
you're right in that it's going to be a slew of different time periods and technologies, the renaissance is a pretty big stretch of time, I was thinking the technology around would be around 15th century, which was still middle ages/early renaissance for most places. about vinland, I want the place to be rather disjointed from it's motherland, and as such it would be darker and more savage, even more so because they'd been fighting tooth and nail with natives just for survival, but that'd be the case most anywhere.

I want there to be plenty of swordfights with longswords and smallswords and rapiers, and because of the colonizing parties not having more advanced weaponry, the fights between natives becoming a lot less one sided.

The situation for the Vinlanders sounds a lot like the conditions you'd have found in Iceland and Greenland around the time - it might be worth digging into.

What kind of patreon tiers do you think are acceptable/best for webcomic creators?

He always had those eyes, and while this is a 3 months old page, and he changed on the current ones ready to colour, he was always like this. minus the eyebags.

Text will explain he couldn't sleep the night before.

From last thread, this was his old and current design, and the eyes are pretty much the same.

Plate armor was a thing for a very long time.
While it wasn't practical to make an entire suit of bullet proof armor (way too heavy to wear for an extended engagement), breastplates and helmets made thick enough to withstand arquebus and musket rounds at range were common, especially for officers or cavalry.
Pic related is 16th century, I believe. Note the bullet indentations on the cuirass.

IIRC the term for Japanese armor incorporating western stylings was "nanban-dou".

get rid of that weird blind cord/cloth thing. That's cool and all if you have something like that in real life, but I think most people don't. I know I don't. The point is that it took me too long to figure out he wasn't doing something with toilet paper at his window.

Oh, you mean the roller shutter cord? Once coloured is supposed to be more obvious what it is, but I hear you. I'm not sure I can re-draw it on top of it, though, may need to make the who panel again.

Now that I look at the example, I failed to make the bottom part of the cord to connect to the wall, silly me. Those that are like strings don't do it, so I made a stupid hybrid that fails to be both. That I can fix, I think.

Without you commenting on it, I probably would have noticed too late, thanks.
>>
>>83600343
*Wouldn't* have noticed.
>>
>>83600343
Not the guy you responded to, but IMHO in the panels the cord looks a bit wide and floppy. These things are kinda rigid and kept taut. As you wrote in your post, the fact it's not secured to the wall contributes to it looking more like some weird decoration.

Armor that was at least partially resistant to pistols rounds and/or long range hits, like buff coats, was also popular in the era of pike and shot.

Every motherfucker and his uncle had one in the English Civil War, pretty much, for instance, and the pikemen generally had some form of munition plate on top of that. Between the two it wouldn't necessary stop a ball, but it would probably have helped, some. The main idea was stopping you from getting hurt in hand to hand combat of course, and the combination was pretty successful at that, certainly for the price. It's doubtful that the average soldier ever had any better protection really.

The cavalry (so like the guys who would have worn that Samurai harnass) would have also potentially had "proofed" plate as you say, and on top of a buff coat, so they would have been virtually impossible to hurt with much of anything, certainly not hand weapons except through BIG amounts of blunt trauma, or a good, square hit with a biggish gun. (Again, mostly the blunt trauma and deformation, not penetration.)

Getting shot in the face or arms, well, what are you gonna do?

At least the coat would help some if they got shot in the arms if it had arms.

Getting shot in the face, you can't really help that.
>>
>>83600513
I can fix that. Thanks a lot.

I actually learned about it through a sport called Historic Medieval Battles, which is basically full contact no holds barred fighting in medieval armor with weapons, based off Russian LARPing from the 1990s, which is a very close approximation of the realities of hand to hand infantry combat in the old days.. In one world tournament, while watching a team from Japan compete in a 10-on-10 battle, I saw firsthand how useless the light Japanese armor was when a guy all samurai-ed up got absolutely rekt while his teammates clad in heavier European armor lasted a lot longer.

Does anyone have some good tips for fleshing out your characters? Or expanding scenes you've written for your story? I've just been writing random bits of dialogue for some of my characters and chapter ideas. But Maybe I'm having trouble cause I don't really have a goal to work towards. I just want to write fun scenes with my characters and scenarios that involve them. So how important is it to have an ending or a goal to your story?
>>
>>83600819

>>83603046
Also interested in this. Bumping it with a (you), and adding something more on my own. Just how "dark" (characters doing reprehensible things, deaths, etc...) can you get with a story, and still have moments of slice of life/comedy without the whole thing being too jarring or incoherent?

My brain never stops thinking of stupid character interactions/scenes. I think it's broken.

Just write everything down, anon, then read over it and think about the character/s you've created. Why do they act and think the way that they do in these situations?
Create a history for them, and then a corresponding history for your world. Then think of an event that could come from that world. Then double-back - How would your character/s act and think in THIS situation? And so forth.
I probably shouldn't offer advice, man, I'm just winging it.

If you have totally out-of-place, standalone scenes, you can just make self-contained short comics on the side!

>>83603288
I think slice-of-life moments fit into a dark setting better than dark moments fit into a slice-of-life setting, if that makes sense.
Even in a shitty, grimdark world, people gotta live; There's always fun, silly, weird moments to be had.
Putting dark moments into something with an established comedy setting is more difficult because it's such a secular genre.

>some are helping them escape, which is always fun. did you ever see that movie with cleavon little and james garner?
>one or two of the slaves have actually managed to get educated which throws a bit of a wrench in the otherwise-justified inferiority assumption

you want another comma after 'team perm' because you're using an allusion.

and while you're at it, making the letters bigger / colored would help a bit in the understanding that it's a proper noun. in an all-caps comic font you don't have capital letters to help make that clear. maybe just bold it?

Yeah, the start of the chapter was feeling a little dull with the previous opening I'd had planned, so I threw in a little bit of weird and whoa-wait-what stuff to pump it up. Not to fret, it will mostly make sense in time.
(It also very quickly establishes that there's some pretty violent stuff going down, in case a new reader comes by, gets fooled by the somewhat cartoonish designs, and starts reading from the chapter's beginning)

So anons, I have a question I would like some advice for.

I'm currently working on a bunch of comics, and I'm wondering, given that my English isn't quite good for writing my texts in a way you English speakers would be comfortable with, I'm wondering...

Should I write my stories (comics) in a mediocre, simplified, slightly awkward English or write them in my mother tongue Spanish? What would you rather read, as, well, a reader? A story written in a clumsy version of your own language or a story written in a foreign language?
>>
>>83609228
definitely do a spanish version, your fellow pepperbellies need to enjoy them and they are a pretty big market
then, make an english version of each one. do your best, your english sounds pretty good to me (hell, you used mediocre)
post them on two different sites or, if you're clever, make one site that can switch between the two languages, like Abnor does.

I follow lots of comics that are originally in spanish but I read the english version. some of them, I help proofread

First anon here. I'm from Spain and I don't see many people following Spanish webcomics, not even webcomics overall. That's why I was thinking about writing in English. Hey there, I have a bit of a wip for a first page, I'd like to know what people in general think of it.
One thing that I'd like to address is that english is my second language, so please excuse me if you spot any bad engrish there, I do plan to get someone to proofread it before actually start uploading this comic regularly.

i'm down. i love a good legend
i've heard a lot of stories with this intro. yknow "There are lots of legends, but none was more amazing, more memorable, more "the topic of this story" than THIS legend!"
just once i'd like to see that phrased more the way a real storyteller would. like "it's a popular topic for legends, but the most interesting, the longest, the one that you're probably wondering the most, is the legend of that big ol' star gem at the top"

Looks great; puting black frames around pannel borders is such a minor detaim but makes pages look a great deal better. I also like the [what I'm assuming is a Jöntar]'s nose better with that bend. Though, on your comment

>It also very quickly establishes that there's some pretty violent stuff going down, in case a new reader comes by, gets fooled by the somewhat cartoonish designs, and starts reading from the chapter's beginning

On man, I actually tend to do the opposite; I love it when you've got a series that's for the most part REALLY cartoonish, then all of a sudden the violence is turned up to 11 when shit gets real.

I was just watching some of those Did You Know videos about anime and it got me thinking about you guys.

So tell me /hyw/, what are some interesting trivia facts that you think your readers might like to know? If you can't think of a whole lot, just a single neat factoid would be good

Were certain characters or plotlines inspired by other characters and plots you had read before?
Maybe your initial concept changed before finding it's footing?

You could use this to get a idea as to what I'm going on about.

I have just too many of those. I think there's at least 4 times as much 'did you know' as there is actual visible evident content in every page of mine

por ejemplo: did you know that keeping a bunch of cuts and scrapes consistent is really really hard?
or that I used to think a miraj had two horns, and only the males had them? why the fuck did I think that? there's a lot of mythological two-horned rabbit things, so i dunno how i got this one so specifically wrong until i thought to check it out before drawing the previous page, and good thing i did

anyway can't post this page on /co/ so here's a preev for you

How do I make a male mc thats not ungodly boring? Holy crap, it was one of the few things I wanted to avoid, but it appears having a boring as fuck self-insert male mc is essential for a story. I have to study some actual funny male characters.
>>
>>83628316
Is your MC a generic-everyman-stand-in figure, or do they have opinions, goals and motivations of their own? Do these goals and opinions conflict with the world and people around them?
>>
>>83541261
in terms of scripting, i've always thought it good practice to leave a lot of hte visual composition to the artist. should I do this, or provide more artistic direction?
>>
>>83624803
There's just something about eastern imagery and symbolism that I like.

Do you have any pointers on my scripting? I'm not really a writer as you can probably tell (most of my writing is academic related) and so my scripts often read like pitches or visual depictions of ideas. Does this work? Or should I spend a lot more time working on my narrative and character construction? (I have never had anything drawn because I'm too lazy/self-consciousness to ask, so I have no idea how my scripts relate to comics themselves).
>>
>>83628316
Give characters a theme based off something you or someone you know have experienced.
>>
>>83628316
I had a similar problem when conceptualising one of the characters for my cast; in this case it's a Fantasy-Adventure series

Thing is, you generally EXPECT Young males in an action/adventure to have certain characteristics, just looks at your most average Shonen heroes.

What ended up happening for me was that this character went was made a deal younger; it sounds like a rather shallow change, but it really made him character more fun to write: a kid can't afford to be as confrontational and direct in the face of obstacles as someone in their late teens/early 20's would be, so they have to find ways around them.

I'm not saying "just make him younger", of course; I don't really know where I was going with this now. But I guess what I was going to say was for you to find ways to distance yourself from the main character. Make him an unconventional hero WITHOUT making him you. If he's an ass, there's room for character development; if he's a goof, you have opportunities for comedy; etc...
>>
>>83629016
>>83629241
>>83629251
Yeah. I know im suppose to create a goal or purpose for them. Its just hard fitting that in the story. Its so much easier to put in a self-insert character with story. A self insert character is like butter. It goes with almost everything, but its always the expected and predictable flavor. But for the dish i'm creating, the only thing I know for certain that will work with it is butter.
>>
>>83629503
So what role does the MC have in the story, if they aren't one of the wheels that move the plot?

There's nothing inherently wrong with an Everyman character, but they need to contribute something to the story, even if it's just to express an outsider/alternative view of the events going on around them.
>>
>>83629503
If your main character's goal and purpose has no influence on the story, that sounds like the wrong character for the story. Who's actually moving the plot along? Go make that guy the main character.

Or, if the idea is that the main character is reacting to the actions of the antagonist, at least make him have an opinion on the adventure he's been thrown into.
Does he relish the chance to prove he's a badass? Does he do it in case girls might be watching? Does he think it's the hugest pile of goddamn bullshit to have ever happened to anyone and wishes he could just be at home playing video games instead?

Angel origionally wasn't going to be the fifth team member, I origionally wrote out chapter six as just a little thing.

Origionally it was gonna be Skippy, then I changed my mind to Beeatrice, then Rosemarry, and then finally Angel.

Also! I have no idea what I'm doing with Sora, I've long forgotten what I wrote her in for, but it's ok because she's cute, fun to draw, and I can come up with some really good gags with her.

Dude, up until WW2 people still used plate armor. Swords I believe were dumped on WW1 though.
>>
>>83633536
20th century plate armor was exclusively designed for use in static positions, though. For example, in WW1 the Germans used front-only armor plates for sentries and machine gunners, Plate armor was not meant for dynamic movement by that time.

Well... it's the main character narrating the intro, and he/she is kind of a depressed one after shit hit the fan, so it probably wouldn't make too much sense to have him/her speak like that.
There actually is a character that speaks like that in the comic though, but she won't show up until a little bit later.

Wasn't really in the mood for a day spent rendering miles of mud, so I'm working on a later page. Yay for buffers.

Not sure what I'm gonna do about the fourth panel, here - my original draft didn't have the balloon over Skeggöld's crotch, but the composition ended up seeming a bit too focused on it. The balloon kind of slows things down (and makes the page seem like it's intentionally playing with the nudity, which isn't what I'm going for either), so I'm thinking I might need to crop it or redraw the pose entirely. Maybe just the legs.

>>83625621
Good to hear it's not too messy. I wanted it to have a strange feeling to it, but I didn't want it to be obtrusive to reading, y'know?

I get what you mean with the out-of-nowhere ultraviolence having a special kind of impact, but it's not really for Carrion Girls, I think. Presenting it early and prominently means I can imply the threat of it later, y'know?

>all that body hair

"Vikings" were Danish right? Didn't Danish women they shave their body hair?
I mean, medieval women from other cultures had recipees for chemicals to remove hair, and they only took baths once a year or something.

Vikings were known for good grooming, washing their face every morning, taking baths every saturday, the women of the house combed and sometimes braided men's hair. They were so well groomed that some christian priest wrote condemning their filthy pagan practices of cleaning themselves regularly, that seduced and turned good christian women to paganism. Muslims also wrote about this washing the face every morning thing with disgust... So... I didn't really search about their body shaving part, but I imagine the girls would take care of their body hair.

Give them an opinion or base them on someone cool. Craig would be boring as fuck if he wasn't blatant Zak Bagans. He'd just be another romantic partner getting pushed aside for powers type character; likely meant to have as boring a speech as anyone whose fucked a cape on a CW show. But he's Zak Bagansy instead, so he's not like that.

Give him something to play off too. Dan and Craig play off one another despite being radically different sorts of people; so when Dan is casting disparaging remarks at Craig, Craig is asking why Dan didn't wear the T-Shirt he made him. Just two friends bashing on one another like friends do.

It isn't hard to make someone interesting. Just find that dynamic that they shine in. A fisherman might seem boring as fuck to you, but if you get him drunk and he starts talking about having once slept with a girl back in the war and he starts cracking jokes about it; suddenly he's not just some fisherman while still being a guy who fits in a sailor archetype. Flesh things out without making it feel like there's an intimidating amount of depth.

These people exist within the world for people within the world, based on interactions with people in the world. Think like that and it gets a bit easier because it is less about writing someone who appeals to audiences and more about writing friends properly.

If you struggle getting into the character and making him say something worthwhile, just pick your favorite character from some other comic, movie or show, and write your character with that character's voice. What would he say or do as a Batman, Donald Trumpet, a dog or a news anchor. And the character doesn't have to be any of these people as is, but the character can act like them. He can have Donald Trumpy mannerisms, words and speaking patterns without actually being him or sharing his ideology.

It's a hell of a lot easier to write for some existing character or person, than creating great character after another on your own. Call it cheating if you want, but it isn't if you give your own spin to it. Mixing and matching is obviously allowed.
