Yes, for the Darke name, her hair clip is also a D, and there's one on her chest plate.

there's just something about robot arms and ponchos and often eyepatches that go together. i can't think of where i first saw it but i've seen it in a few anime, and i have to assume dewd saw one of those too. unless it's another neat coincidence.
>>
>>83452615
Well, I wanted him to look like a cowboy, but I'll remember to lower the hat.
>>83452800
I just chose the robot arm and the eyepatch because they were so cliche, and I wanted to make him look as edgy as possible while still looking like somewhat of a hero.

Since these guys were some of the first heroes, I tried to make them look a little cliche.

Literally TF for SJWs.
Only thing redeemable about it is all the porn Blizzard is desperately trying to censor.
>>
>>83453474
you're telling me that beautiful art / design comes from a recent game? maybe japan's starting to turn back around. in any case though there's no way that's the origin of it then. i've been seeing these fuckers in anime forever
>galaxy rangers
slightly different aesthetic there. i really think there is some grungy gritty 80s anime that started this specific look, and then the likes of Wild ARMs and then later Trigun and shit took from that. specifically the red poncho, the metal arm, some kind of a hat.. i think it's gotta have some specific origin.
then again japan is so shameless about ripping characters off that it's hard to pinpoint the origin sometimes. like, was tuxedo mask really the first masked tuxedo guy? seemed like everybody in the 90s had one.
>>83453114
nah pretty sure that's a poncho.
>>
>>83453547
If you are some sort of autistic neckbeard, maybe. If you actually play this shit though you know it's a great game, and a great celebration of shooters in general. It borrows elements from TF, but its bulk borrows from other 90's shooters, and it even has a "modern shooter" hero, so in the end it isn't much like TF, it's its own thing.
Also, despite the diverse cast borderline SJW pandering, there's only one gross character in the whole cast of 21 heroes, so stop being triggered by brown characters, faggot.
>>
>>83453547
nice bait.
>>
>>83454132
>there's only one gross character in the whole cast of 21 heroes

I agree. I don't know why, but Roadhog being a fatass looks fine, but it's disgusting on Mei. I guess because Roadhog also has buff as fuck arms, so it's not like he's just a sedentary fatass like Mei.
>>
>>83454132
in any case tf2 is nothing but gross people, so isnt that 'tumblr' or whatever?
>>
>>83454132
It's kinda funny that people fell for the 'Overwatch is diverse' meme. All but one, maybe 2, of the girls deviate from the standard sexy girl, whereas the males are anything from midgets, lanklets, fatasses, robots, gorillas, edgelords, etc. It seems like something Tumblr would get triggered by if anything.
>>
>>83454567
triggerdom is contagious. just like how whining-about-racism stimulated a lot more actual racism in places where a state of none had been achieved.

Well, Roadhog is a gigantic man so there's that. But to be honest he grosses me out much more than Mei. Mei is a mess, but she is a cool mess. Roadhog tho, at least put on a shirt you fat fuck.
Anyway, the best skin in the game is the one who covers Zarya from head to toe. I will finally be able to play her.

>>83454306
Nope, it's all cis white male so tumblr hates them. Also they aren't really gross. Not even Heavy, who is a fat guy is a gross fat guy like Roadhog, he has more of a strongman type body

>>83454567
Overwatch cast is diverse, but tumblr doesn't think it is. They still complain saying the same shit you just said.
>>
>>83454643
youd think tumblr would appreciate things like tf2 or the incredibles doing to white people what artists have done to the negros and the chinese and everyone else, exaggerating their features to a grotesque extent

Well, it's pretty stylized - she's got chubby-girl face, but a flat stomach.
Also that one oversized forearm is really bothering me. Is this official art?
>>
>>83456003
I think it's because that arm is more bent than the other. My mom has roughly that build and her forearms bulge up to popeye size when the angle of elbow-bend drops below 15 degrees
>>
>>83456003
Yes, it's in game
>>
>>83455798

why you you repost this picture but with a fucked up resolution? >>83454643

>>83456003
It's official, it's a concept art, and the thingy on the left of the messed up picture labeled "casual" is an in game spray.
>>
Question about writing. How do you do a dramatic/tragic twist in a story that is mostly comedy, without it sucking?
>>
>>83456360
Totally depends on your tone. Don't repeat the mistake of loss.jpg and shift a gag-a-day into a drama. What are some specifics?
>>
>>83456360
Make it dramatic/tragic. Don't soften it with a character acknowledging how tragic it is, or having someone make a shitty/sarcastic wisecrack.

There's nothing wrong with drama in comedy if it's not too out of place or edgy, or just badly written in general.
>>
>>83456360
I don't know, but read Loss and then read the raccoon arc of Calvin and Hobbes for examples of how not to do it and how to do it right.

129KB, 500x632px
>>83456360
Depends on the situation. Usually you should either very gradually fade into drama with sparse comedy as opposed to the inverse. OR hint that something serious is going down but don't have a realization or reveal until it's least expected so it's really shocking. A good example is this song from Mulan. We know these people are soldiers but all we've seen them do is sing and make jokes so whenever they come across the dead village they failed to defend it's very jarring and emotional.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tOXEPNvNB8

What you DON'T want is something that does shallow jokes and has no ongoing story and brings up drama out of nowhere to make it seem deep like CAD

Guess I'll experiment with it a bit when I've got some proper sleep.
I hope that's a good thing. I fucking love thinking about art-as-light, and if I can share the love a bit that's great.

Also, posting panel that I'll probably have to cut entirely because the scene it's in isn't working too good with it.
Ah well, that's the price of working like an idiot I guess.
>>
>>83456360
you mean like this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUhTKMBXWNg
>>
>>83456487

To be more specific: I got a story set in an urban fantasy land. This place is in a cold war with its neighbors. And there's an "something can set the spark off and kill us all" vibe throughout my first two arcs. Then in arc 3 it happens, without too much warning, and one of my main characters is killed in an air raid.

It's not gag-a-day, more like gunnerkrigg with chapters/books etc. So I guess that helps.

>>83456527
>Don't soften it with a character acknowledging how tragic it is

That's a good call, thanks!

>>83456559
Was reading loss in the storytime thread the other day. Still can't believe it's been 8 years already. Will give the raccoon arc a try.
>>
>>83456645
aw but i like this picture. for several reasons.
>>
>>83456734
if youre going to make the audience feel a tragic loss, then let them. let it be real. explore it fully. then for god's sake don't constantly keep doing it. don't be a Tomino and constantly introduce new characters who die horribly so we learn war is teh suck. just let it be the one. that one loss that changes things and people REMEMBER the dude that died.
>>
>>83456734
>And there's an "something can set the spark off and kill us all" vibe throughout my first two arcs.

>>
>>83457070
absorbing something through popcultural osmosis is every bit as valid as understanding the original content
consider the fact that we have a discussion in this very thread about what the original content is, and we haven't been able to nail it down
>>
>>83457140
well as long as your goal is to get people to immediately go 'oh it's one of those kinds of things, from one of those kinds of things'
I do the same exact shit, just half-remembered videogame characters i might have seen in an old magazine or something. Ask any creative person and they'll advise you to always copy, and always copy poorly. that's all originality is.
>>
>>83456755
Yeah, I like it too and I really nailed the pose* but the basic sequence it's part of isn't really doing what it should and while the problem is the panels surrounding it, I'm gonna need to change this one too to make it work.

Hi /hyw/, been having a pretty good week, and a lot of it is due to me figuring out how to cut the stress from getting pages done on time to near 0: I've been waking up at 5 AM to get an hour of drawing done before work.
It REALLY frees up your afternoon schedule nicely and I feel that working on my page gets less tiresome because I'll work on it for an hour and then get back on it 10 hours latter in the same day. Also finished a MAJOR re-write of chapter 8 which was a bloody mess and that had been scratching at my head for months now... but now I think I'm FINALLY satisfied with it.

>>83454747
Stylized comics WILL generally do that indiscriminately, really. You'll only really ever see white characters with, say, long noses. The "tumblr" crowd doesn't like grotesque designs (though you might see that unintentionally), they like "safe" designs.

>>83455858
I dunno, I think it's been worth it for me so that people can point out problems in a page months before it actually goes up.
I was actually thinking of taking a break after finishing the current selkie chapter just for the sake of trying to improve my art without looming stress of the upcoming page. Also, links image ALMOST done. To be honest, I had actually forgotten I HAD a "links" page on my site until you pointed it out, but now that means I also have to make one for the other great comics here like Sisters or MM.

>>83456360
You make people care about the characters beyond them being vehicles to deliver gags. The reason people make so much fun of Loss is partially because nobody cared for the main characters; it's not even about Buckley all that much, it's really about it being very awkwardly delivered and just not fitting the comic AT ALL.

All criticism welcome. I realize the speech bubbles still need some polish, and I'm tweaking them as a type this. But I want thoughts on my art, if anybody has tips I would appreciate it.

Like I said last thread, it's about people who are turned into cartoon characters and are forced by some agency to live together.

Well one thing that would really help is cleaner/bolder lines. Your lines are so thin and fuzzy reading it is a little rough on the lines. Consider playing around with grey scale some more, or using more solid blacks or crosshatching. All the blank white space in the comic makes it look kind of empty.

>Also, despite the diverse cast borderline SJW pandering, there's only one gross character in the whole cast of 21 heroes, so stop being triggered by brown characters,
Actually it's the censoring of Tracer's ass and how assblasted the Memewatch team is over porn I was referring to, Plebby McCasualson. I bet kids like you don't even remember all the bestiality references in Warcraft, or demon tits in Diablo, or how everyone who actually worked on something good at Blizzard has left the company except Sam and Chris who are too addicted to their fursonas and orcsonas respectively to ever leave.

You can pitch the game any way you want but it's still just another TF ripoff at the end of the day, just like League of Losers and Zeroes of the Storm are DotA ripoffs.

Like I said, it's Memewatch. It's a desparate cash grab by Blizzard who can't even make a good expansion for arguably one of the most well known games of all time since they were bought by Activision and, just like with the Guitar Hero franchise, we all know Activision has the reverse Midas touch where all they touch turns to shit.

Yeah, sorry about that. I'm not very accustomed to the limited motion of comics, so I try to convey some scenes as if they were in a movie or animated. The point of that scene is trying to create build up for the transition to the next page.

Have you seen what they replaced the Tracer's ass pose with? They took down a shitty lazy pose and put up a pose that references a pinup poster that shows almost as much butt, a big fuck you to SJW, and a much better pose.
I haven't heard of them being upset about Overwatch porn, but since when companies shutting down porn/creators not liking porn of their games is a SJW thing? In what kind of bubble do you live were this is not standard practice?

On one side we have tumblrines crying because the game is not tumblr, on the other equally big titted fat fucks crying because the game is tumblr. I don't know what group of triggered pussies is the worst drag on mankind.

Also, you call me a casull kid, but it's you who has been feeling so high and mighty on top of your pc gamer master race's highly costumized anal probe for so long, you might want to come down for one second to realise that this game plays more like a fast paced oldschool shooter than TF, grampa. I started playing the beta for Overwatch expecting a borderline SJW TF and I was surprised.
There are these great gamespot videos that shows the designers who worked on Overwatch, these veteran Blizzard empolyees, and what they wanted to do with this game, and they nailed it.
I don't mean to say Blizzard or Activision aren't shit, Heroes of the storm is clearly a cash grab, but that doesn't mean Overwatch is the same, specially since you don't create a whole new IP as a cash grab, don't be retarded.

So stop trying to find reasons to be mad for no reason and play the fucking game, or just ignore all this shit, stop whining and go back to jerk off to anime you fag.

he's allowed to have inspiration. it's not like it's a copy
>>
>>83464813

When I was 8, I had some megaman, power ranger, spiderman, and beetleborg action figures. I would watch DBZ and get "inspired" and have my ragtag team imitate whatever trope or cool thing I saw on TV. Megaman was Goku, and one of the power rangers was Vegeta. They had a sick rivalry going on.

Dewd's comic is the same as a kid playing with a bunch of toys. There's little coherent sense, and it's all for himself. Even the way he derives "inspiration" is juvenile, blindly copying what he sees, making it a barely stitched together mess. But that isn't what bothers me the most, it's when he tries to rationalize it with stupid shit like "nuh uh this is totally not from this thing". Are you kidding me?
>>
Anyone know other good sites to advertise my art/comic?
I already got Deviantart, Tumblr, Newgrounds, and Twitter
>>
>>83465204
it's not a copy though
when i was a kid, i got inspired by that shit but i drew my own. i had a robot suited guy that was pretty similar to megaman but his helmet was vegeta's-hair-shaped and thus he was kinda sonicesque too. i was really thinking of something like iron man at the time, but he had the booster shit on his back like metal sonic instead of the feet.
you can mix up a bunch of shit you like and it's still an original thing. and he did say he wants these characters to look derivative and familiar.
the only real similarity here is 'wears a zelda skirt with the front flap' and 'has shell-pasta-shaped pauldrons'. which yeah, i bet he wouldnt have come up with on his own

When the first design was posted I thought it had a little from Mercy, but ok, it could pass as coincidence... but when you have a Mercy and a Mccree then it's a little too obvious where he is taking his "inspirations" from. When you get elements from something and add them onto your story it's fine, but Dewd now has a clear cheap knock off Mercy and a Mcree in the same story, and they don't even blend in with the original cast, which look more like some bizarre mix of 2000's/2010's cartoon characters.

Completely unrelated though, I made a concept for Angel's father, Dewd. Please use him it's completely oc from the bottom of my heart

it's not a knockoff though, it's just "oh yeah, pauldrons exist. Thanks, game!" you are allowed to do that
and they aren't meant to blend in with the cast, right? they're supposed to be their parents. he said that outright, he wants them to look like more oldfashioned characters.

For the sake of my own time, I'm not going to respond after this one. And even this response is more for everyone else in the thread, as there's something fundamentally flawed with your way of thinking that this point won't get across at this time.

It's not about "allowed", there's no committee of creative endeavors council that judges whether or not something is OK. People are only expressing how they experience the content. Only egotistical and delusional content creators try to tell the audience that they're "experiencing it wrong" and throw a bunch of reasons at them about why they should see it this way instead.

You show those 2 designs to anyone who has played OW, and they will tell you it's a ripoff. No one gives a shit about "but muh pauldrons" or whatever, it's like trying to convince someone that a joke is funny or this part of the story is sad.

Overwatch is a mess of commonly used character traits. Also just kind of a mess of a character roster. I don't know the specifics of the story or have anything against the designs themselves individually but at a glance, cowboy, kawaii mecha, Mad Max enemies 1 & 2, angel, sith lord, robot gorilla, dwarf, etc. is all just too much for one game.

this is also probably why i was having so much trouble figuring out what was wrong. TWO of things were wrong, not just one of things.

y'know i bet to people who know how to plot out the perspective on everything, this seems silly, like 'why didn't they just use the guidelines and get it right?' but to the rest of us it's a real issue. we MUST eyeball things, because if we can't eyeball simple geometric shapes, how can we be expected to eyeball irregular stuff for which guidelines aren't a help?
>>
Why is it most people in these threads release their comic serially?
>>
>>83467855
i should think the advantages and disadvantages of posting in big chunks are obvious. the story reads better (some comics NEED this, others don't) and the reader is less confused. but they also have to wait a lot longer, so the chunks had better leave a solid enough impression that the gap doesn't mean they forget everything in between

I'm debating how to release my stuff - Individual pages? Chapters? The whole damn book?

It's a self-contained story with a definite end.
>>
>>83468043
sounds like a chapters situation
but if you can, try breaking the chapters up into a few pages so you can release them like 4-5 at a time.
>>
>>83468043
i'd say individually on a steady weekly basis. This seems to be one of the staples to keep readers curious and coming.
>>
>>83468043
If you can stomach not having a constant stream of attention, then compile it into a whole book before you release it. The advantages are plentiful-- being able to work on pages in any order can help curve the amateurish "visible skill progression" most web comics constantly exude. You can also make drafts and revisions to the whole thing as your will. The pacing and flow will be a lot better than your average weekly page web comic. Basically if you want to make something really great-- and I mean legitimately something-- you'll be doing it all at once. Like a film.

However, if you want to do a gag of the week thing, or some mundane superhero comic, then you can just make it serial. With that it doesn't matter.
>>
>>83454890

It works best for keeping people's interests and encourages discussion (AKA viral marketing) and regular visits to the site. People get a new thing to talk about every week, rather than once a year or however long it takes you to finish a story. The only readers you lose are the ones who combine not wanting to read things page by page, caring about spoilers, and not being able to avoid spoilers while they wait for enough pages to pile up that they'll bother catching up.

>>83468298
You can do all of those things while releasing page-by-page if you just plan ahead.

Update! What do you guys think?
>>
>>83470838
Dewd, like I said, the first draft of this character could look like a coincidence, the influence was clear to me, but you changed enough so she wouldn't look too much like a knock off Mercy. But with each revision you kept making her clothes closer and closer to the visual you really want: Mercy's design.
Also, if your second "entirelly new character" right after this one wasn't Mccree, nobody would have said anything. But it's this blatant ripoff, combined with the fact that these designs have absolutely fucking nothing to do with the design of the other characters that make they stand out like an autistic sore thumb.
>>
>>83471198
I was just giving what the audiance wants man.

And even then, this seems like a REALLY big strech here, like, your kind of grasping at straws trying to saying a character that looks similar to her is a ripoff.

Good to hear about chapter 8 - feel free to send it my way if you want any feedback.
>latter
That reminds me, you keep using this word when you should be using "later".
"later" is for a period of time ("I will work on my comic later, after explaining this minor point of grammar") , "latter" is an adjective like "second" or "last" that's the antonym of "former" ("I walked up to Jack and his baby sister and punched the latter in her face").
I don't think I remember seeing it pop up in your comic, but I figured I should point it out.

> it's been worth it for me so that people can point out problems in a page months before it actually goes up.
Yeah, but you're posting pages that are months out of context and that will have been mostly forgotten by the time they show up - my buffer is still in that zone where the page I'm working on is a spoiler to the resolution of the immediate conflict. I'm still gonna post asking for help if I feel like I might need it, but there's definitely more of a feeling of wanting to keep my cards close to my chest than I had previously.

Image is looking good, but as a minor nitpick, Skeggöld's black dot eyes aren't just me stylizing her eyes differently - she really is supposed to have black/very-dark-brown eyes.
>>
>>83471668
I agree with you about not wanting to post spoilers. Part of it is that WIPs are a Patreon reward and I would feel bad giving out paid content for free here, and the other part is that we have no buffer so any page we're working on at the time is the very next page. Also there's the propensity of both me and my artist to keep things secret all the time anyway, which made our Hiveworks pitch a bit uncomfortable to do because we had to spoil the entire first major arc of the comic in that thing.

>Good to hear about chapter 8 - feel free to send it my way if you want any feedback.

Thanks, I think I'm confident enough with it now; I wouldn't want to bother you with it more than I already have, the commentary you gave was a real life-saver. I mean, Chapter 7 was still fine minus some pacing issues, but Chapter 8 was were the REAL problems began.

>but there's definitely more of a feeling of wanting to keep my cards close to my chest than I had previously.

Fair enough, I think you're at the point where you don't really need much help from these threads anyhow with some minor exceptions (red pants joke comes to mind). I mean, I stopped posting WiPs a LONG while ago because and generally come here because I enjoy the conversations. ATM I mainly need to take a break (a month or two max) after this chapter to practice purely improving my art and coloring without the stress of also having to put out the next page.

>she really is supposed to have black/very-dark-brown eyes.

Oh, I actually DID think it was the latter and that you just thought she looked better with black dots; will rectify.

SD is easily 6'7.
>>
>>83471004
>Ladie's
Shouldn't that be " ladies' "?

It seems really out of character for Jackie to be a recognized top gymnast.
The kid can barely be bothered to get out of bed on time, her after school practice stops early enough for her mom to pick her up after work and there's not a sign of medals or trophies from past competitions on the walls of her room, but you're telling me she's competing with and beating the kids that train 6 hours a day, spend the rest of their waking hours obsessing over how they're gonna take gold at the olympics when they're finally old enough to compete, and have been doing so since they were nine years old.
Would the story not work if she was just a hobbyist or a talented dabbler?

Bottom panel seems kinda awkward. Not sure why the tip of their heads are cut off, or why the hood of the car is taking up so much real estate. I think it would work better if the "camera" was moved up a bit so the characters' heads were more in the middle of the frame.

Also, not that big a deal, but in the third panel the way the speech bubbles are placed it reads not as a back-and-forth but as the mom saying her two things and then the daughter replying "Yeah. Okay." Fixing this would be tricky though, you'd probably need to redraw their positioning a bit.
>>
>>83471733
Well, I don't know that I'm that leery of spoilers in every occasion - for instance, after this scene concludes, there's gonna be a big long important-but-not-very dramatic scene to set things up for the rest of the chapter, which I won't mind spoiling weeks in advance because it's not full of big reveals or sudden twists.
I can't recommend having a buffer hard enough, by the way. I don't know about your artist, but the sense of tranquility that has descended on my soul is just incredible now that I don't have the constant worry.

>>83472238
Well if I have to be honest, I don't post WIPs here so much to get feedback (though it's greatly appreciated) as I do it to keep myself going - I'm not a very motivated or structured person, but the framing of posting WIPs here has really helped me stay on schedule a few times. Y'know "okay, I just have to clock in another half hour of drawing, then I can post the WIP on /co/ and feel like I've accomplished something" when I'm staring down artist's block.

I like what you're going for, but I don't like that huge meme on the top of the page. I don't know, maybe I'm just overreacting, but it feels cheap, almost reductive, and given how manufactured the letters look, even intrusive.

Like, a ghost cat smoking is already interesting on its own merit. If you just have the top part as smoke, it leaves room for readers to wonder what it's smoking, why, and if it means anything for the story or the character. The alternative is a flat joke

These are just my two cents, at the end of the day, I still like what you're going for so it's up to you

Well, people reacting to bad news is a really complex mixup of emotions and intensity is just one of the dimensions. Fear, rage, grief, despair, denial, all in varying proportions depending on the situation and the character's personality,...

The character in question is a bit depressed due to bad things in the past, so i guess a little bit melodramatic is fine.. but still, some balance is always nice.

By the way, what kind of schedule do you think is more appropriate? One page every week or One chapter every 1-2 months?
>>
>>83482342
the other day there was a page without any grammar mistakes. this one has one, tying it with today's miss melee. lately he's averaging 1-2 mistakes per page. i dunno that's pretty good, but i don't have perspective since i never make any spelling or grammar mistakes ever.
>>
>>83482517
One page a week, you can pick up more readers with more frequent updates and most people don't have the patience to wait 1-2 months.
>>
>>83482517

You want the constant updates because it makes readers come back to your site more often and gets them in the habit of checking your site. This also works if your comic goes to shit because it will be stuck in some people so much that they will feel obligated to check every week for a new page.
>>
>>83482511
Well, the oversized horns are intentional. The way I understand it, it's fairly common for breeds that grow more than two horns to have three or five, and the three horns is a very memorable visual.

You're right about the sizes. It isn't a huge problem, but I have plenty of time to fiddle with resizing things a bit before it has to go up.

>>83482517
A character who's had a lot of bad things happen in the past might well be used to and expecting more bad things to happen to them as well as already having developed more or less healthy ways of processing those sorts of emotions.

As for schedule, the way I figure it, people who prefer to read comics in chunks can still just wait a while between their visits if you update weekly. People who prefer to get it one page at a time can't read it their way if you update every other month.
>>
>>83482864
it's true. i've lost interest in good comics due to lack of updates, and i've kept interest in bad ones due to frequent updates
>>
>>83483086
totally memorable. and it had me triplechecking to make sure you kept the sides consistent.
it's an old trick in... something, i forget what. if you make something look SLIGHTLY off, but not actually off, you get people analyzing it more carefully and they actually remember it better

oh i remember, it's commercial slogans. if you use weird wording or even nonsense, people will remember your slogan better
>>
>>83483192
Oh definitely - presenting the reader with an incomprehensible situation or mystery to generate interest is something I try to do all the time.
Chapter 1 was basically just that for the first 15 pages.

I see... I'll stick to one page a week then.
Though I may or may not consider doing two, I tend to add to much exposition in pages, I can make a character take an entire page just to drink some tea.
Besides, I might only actually "release" the comic once I get 1-2 chapters done so I can get ahead of myself.

I'm also having some drawing/style-related quandaries. I thought going for a sketch -> lineart -> color process would help me streamline things a bit, but I'm finding my lineart to be horrible (then again I really need to work on my anatomy), compared to times when I just start painting and roll with it, which is more time consuming and less consistent but gives (from my point of view) more satisfactory results.

I get that you're trying to do the whole Nihei proportions and style thing but honestly you've really gotta work on your fundamental anatomical understanding before painting or branching off into styles. A few hours of focused drawing from life models or photos will improve your knowledge hundredfold and you'll be able to pick out and improve your existing designs yourself.

I like your sketch far more than the painting as it is with far more confidence and style than the over-rendered painting on the right.

Try not to hide tricky parts like hands, feet etc by covering them in clothing or sticking them in pockets or off the page.

i love lore like that. fantasy settings often have crazy impossible out of place deserts without mountains to cause them. i had one caused by a meteorite that attracted sunlight to the spot like a magnet, Tales of Symphonia had a straight up 'it's the fire elemental's magic making this a desert, if he's disturbed it becomes an arctic tundra' situation..

Question for all you writers. Do you guys read a lot of fiction too?

The reason I ask is because I want to learn how to write stories but I don't read a lot, novels, comics or otherwise. Do you think a writer has to read a lot in order to write good stuff?

>>A few hours of focused drawing from life models or photos

Is that the same as photostudying?

Hands have been always a hit or miss for me, sometimes I get them right, but most likely I just end up redrawing a pose because of how I fucked them up. Guess that's a problem that comes lack of exercise.
I started this small project hoping it would get me to work regularly on this sort of thing. Guess it's time to start visiting /ic/ more often.
>>
>>83487368
Well, I know I'm not a mind reader but I take a guess you were thinking of her as Ezma. I was thinking more of Eddie Murphy's Boomerang.

>was that what ryu and ken were about? i never really got into SF lore
Kinda like the masks, metaphorically speaking, that they put on in most of the games.

ryu is the stoic and serious fighter, looking for the meaning of life or fighting and Ken is more cocky , looking for that next big fight....til he has a family.

>>83487596
It's always good to have a bit of knowledge or reference when writing. Just find stuff that your interested in or what your stories are about. Movies help too.
>>
>>83487596
>Do you guys read a lot of fiction too?
do you breathe a lot of oxygen?
>Do you think a writer has to read a lot in order to write good stuff?
actually no. some of the greatest creators are totally ignorant of the rest of the world of fiction. they tend to be the weird sorts like reclusive writers.. the harlon ellisons of the world.
just don't try to act like you are, don't try to make references to things, and you'll be fine
>>
>>83487598
Sounds good, with what you said I immediately think of The Quest/ Mike Tyson type of setting.
>>
>>83487638
i've done hands the reverse way. start with the cartooniest, then refine them. they have just so many weird shapes that cant properly be broken down into geometric figures.. if you do, you end up with hands that look like pipes glued to chiclets
>>
>>83487638
I'd recommend the "Croquis Cafe" series on youtube which weekly has figure drawing with poses and timed sessions for study. A good starting point for studying hands is simply to look at your own in a mirror, hold a pose with your hand and then, keeping the pose static, move your hand around and draw it so as to better understand hands as objects in 3d space.

There's a huge amount of differing schools of thought when it comes to breaking down the anatomy, from boxes, cylinders or gesture drawing and each has its own merits. I'd suggest trying several ways to find the one you think works best for you.

Draw from all sources for reference, personally i've found that in the scale of usefulness Life>Photos>Other peoples work for the purpose of studying anatomy.

>>83487777
I'd be reclusive too if i'd had the same amount of work passed off as their own by others as Harlan Ellison
>>
>>83487796

>>
>>83488685

>>
>>83487908
I think I'm going to do a mix of everything. Already got started on sketching my hand.
>>83488152
Thanks. I'm not entirely sure, but I think I fall into the "sausages and meatballs" method of breaking down anatomy. Must be my problem. How is gesture? It seems overall more involved with the flow of poses and so, but I might be mistaken. It seems very interesting.
>>
>>83489070
gesture drawing is sometimes used as a warm-up exercise in conjunction with 30 second poses from a life model.

Generally its very useful for ensuring a drawing maintains energy and life while also improving your line confidence and control. Also gesture drawing stops you from falling into the detail trap of focusing on small areas as you're working quickly to demonstrate the entire form.

Sausage and Meatballs is a useful tool and a kind of spin-off of the box method. As long as you can draw those sausages and meatballs in 3d space, accouning for perspective its all good
>>
Do you guys usually find it easier to start telling stories with writing or with drawing?

i start with the writing but you can go all different ways with it

Watch interviews, talk to people, have good conversations, read books, and watch good television. As Good As It Gets used the line "take a man and remove reason and accountability" which while inflammatory is something to consider; that being societal conditioning. Rather than going into my own backstory, consider how the characters were raised. The gender gap isn't really as big a deal in writing outside a period piece, but class and upbringing are huge things that can be painted in broad strokes (and they often are) but should be treated with fine detail. Like I grew up poor to people who should not have been poor; alongside the rest of my town. But I came out of it with a vastly different set of priorities than my local culture; which alienated me but also allowed me to get out. Shit like that.

Just write a person, and write how a person would talk. Region is also important too, and can add a lot with a little. If someone calls soda "pop" and they're the only one who calls it pop, that does set them aside.

Don't overthink it and you'll do fine.

>hairless cat Eartha Kitt
That's wonderful. You're working in a medium that doesn't use sound, so you can probably get away with it without anyone directly pointing it out. I'd say avoid making her look like Yzma, who was sort of a hairless cat of a woman anyway.

As far as a giant sandsea, Lot of good ways to have one. If water is scarce, have it be a once lush land that is suffering under unknown powers which have stolen away the water. Or make it just so large and unending that nobody has ever seen the edge, or that those who have wouldn't be able to return. The reason for a sand sea is often less interesting than how you use it. Could have the world be flat and the water does not flow through here without the intervention of higher powers and those to beseech them.

You could always Dark Sun it. Or just treat it like Afghanistan, which was pretty lovely in the 70s and kinda shitty to look at now. Or California, after a few more decades of drought. Sure there's water, but not enough to make things as beautiful as it used to be.

>>83487596
I think you have to read a lot to write well, but even then you'll make mistakes. I read two to four books a week, usually short story collections. And about a dozen gaming books just because that's a hobby. I think it helps a lot more than going in dry. The more you consume story structure and pacing the more it'll occur naturally to you. I also try to break in at least two books on writing a month. But I'm a masochist like that.

Mine's going on forever, but god dammit time is going to PASS. the heroes of old are going to age and die (well, some will take longer than others depending on lifespan). And while the crushing weight of continuity with the past is almost certain to eventually clusterfuck things up as badly as it does in Redwall or Xanth, I'm still going to keep moving forward. not languishing behind.

Thanks a lot for the Feedback. I need to make the werewolf form in colour too, where his feral quirks are more notorious, I'll look into doing it today.

As for the Succubus, I'm all ear for colours. I went kinda purple thematic for no reason, but I need colours that are not very saturated for an accessory I will add in the future. Probably a necklace.

Cyclops is supposed to be a peeping tom, so he needs to blend in the background, but I'm all up for suggestion for different clothing/colour scheme.

I will try stuff on my own too, see what I can manage to get done. I'm currently colouring the humans, so I'll get it on later.

Thanks again.

I think in addition to your comics you should practice drawing forms from life (i.e. soup cans, boxes, etc from different angles) because your drawings don't read as having a sense of volume. This would also help you be able to draw your characters consistently/"on model" because you'll have a greater sense of proportion and how to turn forms in space.

>I need colours that are not very saturated for an accessory I will add in the future. Probably a necklace.
Well I feel that shade of purple doesn't accentuate her features i.e. her hair and her horns/tail. That's what I think you should strive for. For example, the first two I like because their features pop out at me (the blue hair, their skin tones, even that gold lettering on the shorts). With the succubus, her hair nearly matches her outfit, which is uninteresting, and they both don't seem to jive as well as they could with the horns/tail.

Also, if you want her to have a visually interesting necklace, you might want to just ditch the tracksuit all together, if only because it covers everything up and people wouldn't normally wear jewelry with workout clothes.

>Cyclops is supposed to be a peeping tom, so he needs to blend in the background
Makes sense. This one's up to your discretion then. The only thing I'd recommend is to consider the color scheme of your background and atmosphere, and just give him those clothes.

Alright, finally done with this page! I think I did an OK job making the colors less vibrant to reflect the worsening weather.

In other news, I really do think I'll be taking a month-or-two hiatus after I finish drawing just chapter just to work on improving my art. I feel that ever since the end of the Kelpie chapter I've kinda hit a wall where the art remained stagnant, while it had progressively improved in the previous chapters. If I try to deliver a page each week I don't have as much room for experimentation and don't have as much time to try out new things and learn how to do some things better.

Among other things try out some different storytelling than my 4x3 format; while I like it a lot because it helps me get a lot of story on each page, I'm sure people are starting to find it dull. I think the end of this Selkie chapter will be a good point for a hiatus since after this the story becomes less "Monster of the Week" for about 6-7 chapters, so when it comes back there'll be a slight change of tone.

And I am generally satisfied with my comic for the most part, but I honestly feel it's a 7/10 right now and I want to raise it up to an 8; but for that I think I need to focus on improving some areas without the distraction of having to finish the next page. I've never actually had someone tell me my comic is "bad", but the amount of time I spend on it I think doesn't quite reflect on the quality yet.

Anyhow, sorry for the blogpost, but I wanted to share that to what you you guys think since these threads have really helped improve the quality of the comic? Am I fretting over nothing? Or do you also think it'd be a good idea? (I probably will end up doing in anyway, but it's always useful to get some opinions)

You'd be surprised how much you can improve without even trying. I mean, look at Dewd. The percentage he's improved his art by since he started his comic a year and a half ago is insane, and he certainly hasn't been trying.

I'm not familiar with the game I think this comic is based on, but I understood what was happening.

Generally most people here aren't familiar with comics that err toward abstract/experiential/"art comix"and as a result will deem those kinds of comics "hard to follow" or ask "what's going on?" because they're used to comics following a hard, explicit narrative (as how superhero comics have a narrator or announcer in addition to image/dialogue.) I think changing it would make it more hamfisted, imo.

These days I've read a lot of things, thanks to finishing my studies, and finally find myself in the mood to write and draw some stories I had wandering my head last two years. But then I decided that I wanted to draw some fancomic in the Marvel Universe, a sci fi and urban magic adventure featuring the Hawkeyes, Doc Strange, two OC girls and one OC.guy. And sone very bad but not too powerful guys from 800 years in the future (And since last night reads, maybe Pym). I must be crazy, but I feel like I can actually draw that. And so I've started with it.

I hope I can actually finish it. I'm not very diligent with my own projects, not a fanfic person either. And my skills aren't polished.

Here is my unfinished first page.

For me it comes down to the goals particular to this comic. The chief goal was to learn how to draw better. Also, my desire to learn how to do something has to overide my ego and fear of failure.
>>83522006

Yes. Every bit of spare time I have essentially. That's usually 8-11:00 on work nights and 10 hours or so on my days off. I did about 6 hoirs last night, and I was off today but only got in about 6. It averages out.
I lose days around the hollidays and this time of year too and sometimes I just read comics for a week or two straight.
>>
>>83524626
I'll try to give it more detail. It's one of my bad habits: I tend to do flat drawings, not much detailed.

I'm not sure how the greys are going to translate once I scan it: it's pencil and scans don't love pencils.
>>
>>83524903

Varying the lineweights a bit helps give things more dimension. And for the grays it just depends on how you scan it, and then dick around with the settings in photoshop/your software of choice.
>>
>>83525366
Varying lineweights, got it. Let's see if I can do it right (I have markers of different weight, but I'm not sure I can actually use them properly). Thanks a bunch for the advice.

>>

Write a bunch of characters, give them backgrounds and motivations.
Write a problem for one of said characters.
Write a problem for another character that brings conflict to the first character.
Create a mcguffin for the story that has something to do with on of both problems.
Solve the problem, or write the consequences of a bad end.

Eh it's more like a few ideas that just get occasional revamps of "hey what if we jammed these guys into an entirely different time period/setting, WHAT THEN??" >>83528607
I'm hoping for a vague moral myself but I don't expect to get full fable-mode about it. The interesting part for me is more exploring how characters change and feel about the shit going down.
>>
>>83527618
I'm a bit like that, anon. I'm going to finish a (long-ass) story because I've already written it. It's there, it's done, it has an ending. I know that if I put it off further and keep tweaking it I'll never end up doing anything at all.

I'm considering it kind of like the 'prototype' for the world, which I've already expanded and want to make more stuff in later. This particular story is just.. Heavily grounded low-fantasy in a high-fantasy setting. It takes place entirely in the one primarily human region and follows a fairly insignificant world event, so there's nothing super fancy.

If you already have a world built, maybe try just writing a short event story set in it? It doesn't have to be some huge quest or important world-changing event; Just something that has a definite beginning and end for you to focus on completing.
>>

this is more boring but a lot more believable for a cave.. it looks more like a super DEEP cave, that never sees light.. but going by all the foliage everything's draped in, and the little cattails and stuff, you're going for more of a cove. a cave nearer the surface that still gets plenty of living stuff growing in it, right? So... I suggest... take >>83528467 , make the red purpler, make the green bluer.. and then you're set.

all i can tell you is if you really have an urge to try out a ton of settings, make it a traveling story. Something like mighty max or doctor who, where there's an excuse for different settings all the time. that kinda shit gets exhausting though, you don't build any one place, you just have your characters endlessly reacting to new challenges and situations..
if you're really up to it, that's what you should do. but if you're only thinking about new settings constantly because you can't choose, maybe not.

that extra little bit of brown at the bottom of the background gradient helps it a lot. it still seems a bit lighter in the back than it should be, depending where light might be coming in, if at all, but... if this is the one you settle on, we can call that a win.

Off the top of my head, the shortstack elf girl companion from the one with the frog main character.

I like the one without the long nose from carrion girls also.

But I can't, anon. I need these threads. The praise I receive has become my life-source.
>>
>>83522006

2 hours every day (aim for 3-4 on the weekend days)
At the moment, it's:
5:30 to 6:30 AM
Then work
Then another hour usually from 7:00 to 8:00 PM.
On Fridays and Saturdays, I usually stay up until 3:00 AM so I don't worry about Schedule then.
>>
>>83533220
the praise is making you invest more time and energy into web comics, which are a mistake. which in turn makes these threads a mistake. don't let your life be a mistake.
>>
>>83533289
2 hours? how many hours do you take to finish a page?
>>
>>83533482

About 14, but it can go up to 16-17 if it's a particularly complex one
>>
>>83522006
I have an application that measures how much time I spend in my drawing program, and I try to clock in 3 hours a day*, usually working on a few different pages at a time to keep from burning out.
This often takes all day - I get distracted easily.

That's just for the comic's pages. I draw other stuff aside from that, but I don't keep track of the time I spend on that.

*2 hours is about enough to stay on schedule, so with 3, I can miss a day or waste a few hours drawing something I'm not sure is going to work out every now and then and still not worry.

Jesus. I'm a filthy neet and I'll clock in 6-7 hours a night just fucking about with the one page.

Gotta remember to just draw it and make revisions at the very end, not keep redoing the same panel over and over.

Do you actually spend that much time drawing, though?
Back when I started timing myself, I was shocked at how little work I got done compared to how much time I spent sitting down "working" - like, I'd sit down intent on drawing for two hours and five hours later, I'd only have clocked 20 minutes.

I realize most of this is done digitally by now but to those who still use pen and paper, what's a good pen /set-up for lines / inking.

I bought ink at book stores a few times but it always ended up looking blue-ish on paper even when the people at the store told me it was "black ink". I've wasted enough money on this allready so I would really appreciate it if someone could point me in the direction of a good ink pen with a somewhat reasonable price.

Thanks in advance.

Make sure to get genuine Indian Ink first
>>
>>83534836
cheap ink gets a bluish tint over time, it may be good for practice, but if you want good results you will have to invest in quality ink
>>
>>83505136

what are you on about? Your art is one of the best ITT. It looks super natural like something a really skilled artist drew quick but effortlessly. It may sound like an insult but I actually mean it as praise when I say it reminds of a Togashi scribble.

Say about Togashi's work ethics what you will but boy can that guy draw when he actually tries.

Keep it simple, you have a style of your own. Good job.

Oh, so there's black ink and ""black ink"", huh? Damn clerks.

Thanks for the advice, I'll look for the genuine ink.
I tried to use the real "artist pens" where you have to dip the tip into the ink every few seconds but the results were teribe, I need more practice first. What's a good pen I can refill with Indian ink? And what pens do you use personally?

Sorry for being so annoying.
