Anon, the entire plot line of hellboy has him refusing to accept his destiny and the actions of him refusing leading him on a path towards it. There are a lot of theories about what will happen when he does take it up but I'm pretty sure it's gonna happen

Mignola usually goes for prophecies are true but they play out in unexpected ways - like Hellboy going to Hell and overthrowing all the dukes and princes. The prophecy's existence made them all fear Hellboy so when he went to Hell they all fled, this gave Hellboy a Kingdom to give to working class demons of Hell and thus freed ALL the slaves under the dukes and princes of Hell leads to their deaths.

There is a theory that the prophecy was going to happen no matter what and Rasputin knew this. But do to the interpretive nature of prophecies by giving Hellboy humanity he could change the end of the world into more of Mayan cycle kinda thing
