Yo: Any traditional media Ausfags looking non-repro blue sketching pencils in Australia and having no luck, check out Officeworks for these chunky bad boys. They're the best thing I've found yet, clear, smooth, non-waxy and eraseable, and they're only a dollar to boot.

I bought a bunch of their Quill-brand artboard, too. I'll get around to testing how it takes ink in a week or so - I'll try and remember to report on the results in one of these threads.

I'm glad you went back to the original joke. The punch one seemed almost like a bad strawman comic.
>>
>>82854392
Can it be a strawman if the person is real and just as much of a jerk as I wrote him to be? He was actually worse irl but I doubt anyone would believe that.
>>
>>82854422
>Can it be a strawman if the person is real and just as much of a jerk as I wrote him to be?
Yes, because you'll never know the inside of his mind and the comic doesn't even make an attempt to understand his position.

Regardless of whether you think the real life person was in the wrong or not, your comic depicts a one-note caricature meant to be ridiculed. Even if you don't think your use of it here is uncalled for, that character is a strawman. This does not make you a bad person or curse your comic to being bad, that's just how you chose to present him.
>>
>>82854075
You are stupid.
>>
>>82853175
Thanks! That's good to hear.
>>
>>82854481
Your right i dont know what was going on in the guys head. However, the only side he showed to me was quite terrible and uncalled for in this selling. It's one thing to be given critique in a classroom setting or if you asked for it. Even here is fine because asking for it is implied. Giving your opinion to someone doodling in a coffee shop when you don't know them does say something about his character imo. This wasn't included but he also went on to tell me how he is a successful interior designer and his paintings go for a lot of money. I of course have no way of proving or disproving that but it was quite obvious (at least to me) that he wanted to prove to a random other person that he was somehow better than them when in reality that would do nothing but boost his ego. I wasn't given anything sympathetic to go one is what I'm getting at. Same goes for the other people Mimi has had to deal with so far with the exception of the first guy and the woman with the dog who did nothing wrong.
>>
>>82854653
Setting* i hate this phone so much
>>
>>82854422
>Can it be a strawman if the person is real
Yes, because the only person reading the comic who knows for an absolute fact that person is real is you. Most people who read it especially on /co/ are going to think it's a strawman like 9000 other strawman comics.

Skeggöld is cute. CUTE!
>>
>>82854653
I think you're missing the point. Your value judgements have no bearing on whether or not the character is a strawman, nor does being a strawman instantly equate to something bad.

You asked if that really counts as a strawman and I am telling you that yes, a character this simple who exists in-comic just to be mocked or harmed in response to his behavior/opinions is a strawman.

For the sake of your character writing, but not necessarily real life, I implore you to think deeper on situations like this sometime. There's a LOT of places people can come from when doing awful things, and thinking out the various places these actions can come from really helps in being able to craft characters that are engaging.
>>
>>82854865
My apologies for being unclear. I wasn't defending him as not a strawman. I asked the question in the first place since it was indeed a concern I had in the first place. I wrote what I did as an explaination of why he's written the way he is. When it comes to fictional people I look at their actions (or at least I try to) from many angles. He isn't a fictional person. He's a guy that pissed me off in a starbucks. He isn't afforded the same luxury not that it affects him in any way.

I openly admit that what he said bothered me more than it should have. I hate people like him and I'd like to someday prove him wrong.
>>
Hey /co/ I need your opinion. Which one of these two webcomics would you rather read and why? I think I know which one is better, but asking anyway:

WEBCOMIC 1
-----------
Modest 40 chapters of British Adult Drama/Humour/Erotic/LGBT/Slice of Life/Emotional Rollercoaster (story set in present time, about love & people struggles.)

OR

WEBCOMIC 2
------------
Epic 300+ chapters of Adult Shonen Parody/Humorous/Erotic/Black Comedy/Absurd/Mindless Fun with sex, drugs and violence on top of it. Story set in fictional magical universe, about typical shounenshit so things like monsters, shipping, hatred, ki blasts, transformations etc.

Unless your chapters are two pages, 40 chapters is not "modest". At five pages a chapter we're talking about a graphic novel. At 20 we're talking about three or more.

You might wanna edit down both stories substantially before deciding

>>82855942
I'm an asshole because I think someone who cares about their payday more than their story but ALSO thinks they should go the webcomic route instead of looking for a publisher should look for a different field? What are you even on about?

Their business strategy sounds pretty terrible for them AND their reader. I don't have anything against people trying to get paid, but their approach reads as either "I'm stretching my story to maximize profits" or "I'm forsaking the story if I don't profit quickly", both of which are contemptible.
>>
>>82856065
No need to apologize, like I said it's a minor nitpick.
I like the changes you've made to the characters, btw.
>>
>>82856140
That doesn't even make sense. If they're going to drop it that nonchalantly their other job wouldn't be "distracting" because they weren't going to do the comic for anything but money in the first place, and if they need to get paid that badly there's no reason they can't seem a publisher. Or hell, write the story so that they neither stretch it for cash or cut it short, moving into their next project and building a fanbase, because God knows we already have too many unfinished and endless webcomics.

I don't see what's objectional about this. If getting paid is that important there's plenty of other art fields to pursue.
>>

Okay I'll be real with you. When you bring up a publisher: What publishers?

There aren't submission systems in america the way there should be. If it's not sheer luck, it's nepotism. Meritocracy is the farthest thing from what's happening.
>>
I really don't expect anyone here to be able to answer that by the way.
>What publishers
I mean consider how big a deal it was when Oni opened submissions.

Something like that should not be a significant event in this country, but for some reason it is. Doesn't anyone find that odd?

No one does. But you better not open a patreon either! You greedy pig.
>>
>>82851678
that's the opposite of true. in fact it's vastly preferred.

I'm thinking of submitting to Hiveworks. Does anyone know what they offer to creators besides from what's on their submissions page? Right now, it just looks like they can run your website and run ads, so all you have to do is update, but I find running your comic site to be the easy part.

I'm trying to find out how much creators can get paid but I guess that's NDA stuff because I can't find that out anywhere.

It's a healthy atmosphere to see the best of the best. It helps you improve as an artist to consume it.

>>
>>82857457
>if it's A) worth something to people
I find this dishonest.

This is webcomics. Only a very small percentile of a fanbase pays for anything relating to something they get for free anyway.

They can like it, love it, but never ever pay for it, for years. Those years are what get people. I hope you understand what I mean by that. Because explaining it is gonna be a bitch.

well for one thing, less eye-burning brightness. easier to enjoy in a darker room, which is just preferred in general. but especially to save energy. that's why 4chan, tvtropes, any good website has a 'night mode' to relax your eyes.. and for the early years of computers, light on black was your only option. also whatever art you're showing, it shows up better without being drowned out by surrounding brightness. of course it varies tremendously.

now if your comic is predominantly super light in color, having white text on black can actually be kinda hard to read. and if the comic is PURE black and white, it'll be damn near impossible to tell the word balloons from the art. in this regard, cat ghost trolling has a bit of an issue. thankfully the comic isn't complicated or hard to follow in general
>>
>>82857753
Yes. Although I'm not the anon you were talking to.

I just don't think you know what dishonest means.
>>
>>82857805
Intellectually dishonest.

We're lying to ourselves when we think it. That's what I mean by it. I think I'm using it correctly.
>>
>>82857549
exactly. so most of us don't make money. but we still do it because it's worth something to us. and hopefully it'll be worth something to others too. and right now we're all trying the 'salami slices' method of funding, so that if it's worth even a tiny bit to everyone, if you make it convenient for them to throw you a few pennies, they can add up.
>>
>>82857802
I have never understood why people like "night modes". It's always strained my eyes, because, you know, it's dark.

Also
>tvtropes
>"good website"
>>82857831
I do not think you know what intellectually dishonest means, either.

It means intentionally using arguments you know aren't correct/have problems, just so you can "win". Like sophistry.
>>
>>82857831
Perhaps you were just splitting semantic hairs. I should have said 'worth working for'.. not just worth SOMETHING. obviously it's worth something. but is it worth your hard earned money.. and also are you going to be enough of a dick to put it behind a paywall

but yes, people are used to getting a lot of shit for "Free", but they still pay for INTERNET. and the content you put out there is part of that. If you weren't putting out content they enjoyed, internet would go the way TV is going now, with people just foregoing a subscription

Okay, I've made a bunch of comics that are not particularly funny to people who don't play a specific Spanish miniatures game. I want to put them up on a site that is not tumblr, because tumblr has problems with the strip size.

What non-tumblr page templates or solutions would you suggest? Sorry if this was asked a million times (I bet it was), I don't look into these threads very often.
>>
>>82857916
I'm talking more about people being honest about the situation they're dealing with.

People being told that if they're in it for the money they're in the wrong business. The problem with telling anyone that, is that everyone already knows it. Don't get into comics for the money: Super Duh II Turbo: Championship Edition HD.

We're talking about making a living, not fat stacks. When people ask about that, we should be talking about the likes of conventions, prints, gumroad, patreon, kickstarter, etc. Not giving them the 'Duh' lecture of not expecting huge profits.

I apologize for my pants on head retarded 90s PSA rapping posts about food not being free, but I have had this conversation in abundance, often to complete no-sells who won't get past the 'Duh' part.

Also, internet is an empire now. It just plain has the potential to outclass what TV can do. The internet can't go away at this point.
>>
>>82858066
the most logical place to post them is on the forum for that game.
>>
>>82858214
well the problem is your argument is 'because it costs money to live, and people should live, everyone deserves a living wage' which is a common sentiment but not a universal one, and economically speaking not a legitimate one. it's up to each living being to make itself useful enough to earn what it needs to live.
otherwise you're pretty right in general
>>
>>82857474
It's not unusual to NDA that shit at all or leave it unknown until contracts are out. In fact that's the most common practice among American comic publishers.
>>
>>82857802
>. and for the early years of computers, light on black was your only option.
And then everyone switched to black on-white because the studies showed it's way easier and faster to read, especially for people with astigmatism. If you're worried about eye strain, just make it an off-white.

>but especially to save energy
Unless you're using a CRT, darker colors don't take more energy to display on a screen than brighter ones.

I know for sure featured creators on Line Webtoon is a guaranteed $2k monthly, and on Tapastic it's based off how many views you get (which can be decent or salty pennies)

>>82858341
To go off on a bit of a tangent now, let's talk about our customers.

I get into a lot of heated arguments about the minimum wage. Obviously, the super rich would've been crucified if they ever tried to lower it. But it hasn't been adjusted for inflation either. It has naturally gotten lower and lower as the dollar becomes worth less and less.

These people, the young adults and adults, are our customers. The people who could pay us. They're having their balls ripped off them. If a problem affects them this way, it affects us even harder.
>>

I'm currently reading up on them.
I need to know, does any of the sites you know frown upon using swearwords, violence or racial slurs and stereotypes in the comic? As evidenced here, I sometimes use that for humour. Note that the game itself is decidedly 18+, mentioning things like cyber-furries bred for prostitution and whatnot and sometimes dropping f-bombs in manuals.
>>
>>82857211
I think you should be careful and read the fine print when it comes to Hiveworks. On one hand, they are really helpful with getting exposure and stuff but they ask for a big chunk of your profits. A little bigger than me and my colleagues were comfortable with. Also, they're a little weird with publishing rights. They consider themselves a publisher and want you to have digital rights to your stuff. There's a bit more but I will stress that you read the fine print for their guidelines and stuff before throwing yourself in...though frankly that's anything.

That's the problem I'm having. There's not a lot of info about them or people's experiences with them. I know they don't allow cross-posting, and some of what I've read reminds me a bit of what Tokyopop.
Honestly, I'm going with Line Webtoon and self-hosting, but I like to keep my options open.
>>
>>82858825
even if it does, you have to be MASSIVELY popular before anyone's going to actually notice, and have any chance of reporting your comic
most of the time hosts dont give any shits about content unless it's a general 'if it's adult content, mark it as such in your settings so search engines don't find it unless they want to' thing.
>>
I wonder how many people here are even AWARE of what Tokyopop was doing in the 00s.
>>
>>82858825
I don't believe comicfury has rules against anything so long as it's properly tagged and kept on the site itself, rather than the part that's shown on the comicfury registry (like, if your comic avatar that shown when looking at CF's list of recently updated comics is a huge white dick calling another, darker dick a nigger, that would be against the rules because people can see it without actually visiting your comic).

They do mention not allowing pornography, but considering one of my regular readers does a comic that's about futa rape barbarians and doesn't seem to have had any problems, I think that might be referring to live action stuff.

The forums are more strictly policed though (one guy from these threads got banned from them for using the word "faggot").

im still drawing my characters to decide how they will looki just need to draw 4 more to complete the cast and that will allow me to start drawing the cover and the first pages

Anyways i finished these guys, they are part of another team that usually ends up in scooby doo type adventures

the first guy has a talking cat knight ghost that always follows him works kinda like a weird combination of calvin and hobbes with jojo bizzare adventure

the other one is a noire detective wannabe that has a little Symbiote buddy, the symbiote gives him very specific powers that i will not explain right now because it would take too long

there is another member in this team but im still drawing him because he is supposed to look like a big brother figure to these guys and i haven't picked a design yet

Well, for a start, there's the other places where English is the native language - Canada (35 mil), Australia (24 mil), and the UK (65 mil).
Then there's the rest of Europe (only 38% of the EU speak English well enough to hold a conversation, but that's still over 150 million people), all the places that used to be controlled by the British Empire (India, for instance, has over a hundred million English speakers) where not a lot of the people are online but those who do are likely to speak English...
All in all there's around 1.5 billion English speakers in the world. The net's a big place.

I know we all start out bad at art/writing, and only with time and practise do we improve. But how do you motivate yourself to carry on during the period where you know you're producing stuff that's mediocre or worse? Especially since that period can last years?

Is the thought "one day I'll be good" motivation enough for you? If not, what is?
>>
>>82861096
>wow when did the UK get so populous?
About 1700.
>>
>>82861369
>But how do you motivate yourself to carry on during the period where you know you're producing stuff that's mediocre or worse?
If drawing and writing isn't its own reward, you're going to have a bad time.
>>
>>82859095
Do you keep your property rights with Hiveworks? I only care about having the right to print and post to my art tumblr/instagram and keeping the rights to my uh, properties.
>>
>>82861424
It is, but not all the time.

You can't honestly tell me you enjoy 100% of all art and writing you do.
>>
>>82861369
The best trick, I've found, is to have fun doing it. If you learn to enjoy the process of improving and learning, you can do it forever.

Aside from that, focus on your good points. Yeah, your stuff won't be the best in every respect, but I can almost assure you that if you try, someone out there will like it and appreciate it because it's got some quality to it that they're into. Not a lot of somebodies, but you'll have enriched someone's life a little because of what you did.

The trick, of course, is to focus both on focusing on what you're good at and fixing what you're bad at at the same time.
>>
>>82861369
>But how do you motivate yourself to carry on during the period where you know you're producing stuff that's mediocre or worse?
Fun fact: that period never ends.
You won't be good "one day", but you'll look at your own stuff 6 months from now and see which mistakes you've fixed.
>>
>>82861599
Well, then you've got more than the thought that "one day I'll be good" to motivate you, anyway.

Otherwise, no. It's not enough, to me at least. You've heard the saying about bicycles? It applies here. You'll get good by drawing because you like drawing.
>>
>>82861808
>You've heard the saying about bicycles?

>>
>>82861369

>>
>>82861896
Oh. Uh, basically, three dudes ride their bicycle to a wise man's shrine, one because it's cheap, one because it's fast, and one because he wants to ride his bicycle. And the last dude is the good guy.

Ignoring new-age waffle, the point is to draw to draw, not to one day be successful.

>how do you motivate yourself to carry on during the period where you know you're producing stuff that's mediocre or worse?

>Also, they're a little weird with publishing rights. They consider themselves a publisher and want you to have digital rights to your stuff.

From HW's submission page about reposting comics:
>We don’t allow comics to be posted on multiple sites simply because that interferes with us promoting the comic and managing the ads.

I have the same concerns though. I think art is ok, just not actual comics being reposted to Tumblr, Tapastic, Line, etc. Reason probably being, they want a majority of the ad revenue and you get a cut
>>
>>82861469
>>82862364
Yes, you retain 100% of property rights with Hiveworks. They want a monopoly on digital sales and they want your comics on one site only (I'm unsure what their position on print sales is but I think it's more flexible). The second part I never had a problem with because that's always been my attitude towards my comic anyway.
>>
>>82862364
That makes sense to not want to split up the audience, but I hate the idea of not being able to post entire comics on my website. Not like it's any benefit to me since I don't have ads/site trackers... but I'm a very paranoid person. For example, I'm scared of the NSA.

The thing is I really, really, really love what I'm doing. Since I was a kid, I've loved it so much. I know I'm mediocre, but I also know I'm far from the worse. So my extreme want to draw thats only hindered by IRL responsibilities is always catapulting me back to doing this. I still feel burned out sometimes, but when I come back I feel so pumped. Knowing my standards=/=skills makes me just draw stories for only myself though. I still try to improve, of course, but I pay 2% attention to what what my readers like lmao and make stories that pander to ME. That's additional motivator because I actually like what I do. I improve little by little on the way. Around 1 centimeter per year.

How do you guys deal with scathing criticism? It always gets under my skin and makes me wanna quit
>>
>>82865719
Fili and Noli are RPG characters being played by Abby and Sara. While it's mostly an MMORPG, it's also possibly a tabletop game. None of this is explicitly stated.
It's also me doing a bargain basement Osamu Tezuka and re-casting characters from one set of stories into another. The "Bags of Holding" strip was the first one where I did this, because I couldn't be bothered coming up with new character designs for what was, at the time, a one-shot gag. It was only much later I decided to expand it into it's own series.
I also have it in mind to do a further iteration of EtMotL as a longform story with a proper setting and DEEPEST LORE, instead of the unspecified generic MMO the gag strips currently takes place in. But that's entirely dependent on me coming up with a story for it to take place in.

>>82866275
Until that strip, they didn't have names, though I mentally referred to them as Abby and Sara.

>>82865885
>>82865956
The various strips and series in the archives go back much further than 2012.
>>
>>82866338
I remind myself that it's far more valuable than idle praise, and then examine the criticism from every angle to make sure its valid. After that, it's just a matter of applying the valid points and ignoring the rest.
>>
>>82866340
Realize that it's going to happen more often as you go on and just mentally prepare yourself

Make note of what's helpful from the criticism and apply it to your next work

so yeah, basically everything >>82866488 said, including idle praise stuff

some blood
>>
>>82866334
I thought the statue in the first panel was a hooded figure (mouth is the hood opening) for quite a while. If that's intentional, it's bloody well done.
The guard's sword hand looks a bit off, like you drew the ahdn and then went "oh shit, she's supposed to have a sword". Especially in the final panel where you didn't draw the part that was covered up by the wizard in the first panel.

>>82866340
>EtMotL as a longform story with a proper setting and DEEPEST LORE

I don't know if that's a good idea. Having read the gag strip, I'd always have the thought that Fili and Noli are just player characters rattling in the back of my head, which would make it kind of hard to suspend my disbelief. Even if you just gave them some cosmetic changes, I'd have a much easier time accepting the story on its own merits.
>>
>>82866338
I'm odd, I don't like positive comments, either. I feel weird when my work gets positively reviewed, like I don't deserve it.

I try to remember not to take criticism personally and it's probably better than a hug box. I had someone go off on me once, calling my work immature and childish and no where near Stephen King level. I'm not really sure what all that was supposed to mean, but to be honest, I ignore those comments. But if someone is just being retarded (like commenting he wished he could smell me while I slept), I delete those comments and keep going.

I need to work on drawing rocks and cracks.
>>
>>82871425
study your toriyama, dude fucking rocks at rocks.
it also helps to look at some original pokémon illustrations, the rock types.. you'll see how rock facets can be drawn subtly, and the shapes they often form. the real trick is when you want something to be ROUGHLY a sphere/cube/etc, but not look artificially hewn.. you have to learn how to make 'random' jagged pieces that average OUT to the sphere/etc
>>
>>82871517
>>82871425
oh, and just tips on this.. the facets are a bit too linear and regular, more like a crystal would be than a random hunk of granite. it's okay to soften a lot of that. the cracks are pretty okay but they don't really branch as much in rock. the bottom cracks (the ones that leave diamondy bits) is just right

and obviously there's some fantasy elements here because no matter how strong you are you couldnt pick up a rock with that grip (or lack of grip) , you'd rip off a piece of it.. and you couldnt carve into it with your finger, it would just crush into pieces. though maybe you could superstrongly rub til it eroded... but we aren't supposed to worry that much about reality here
>>
>>82870570

>>

Fear rooted in ego. Ego by itself isn't a bad thing, but if you can't master it then it controls you. You can see it in these threads. There are those who post their works looking for alternatives to their own perspective with the intention of making their work better, and there are those who post only seeking praise and attention.

There's a saying that if you just draw character closeups for comics, you will deteriorate. I agree, but while drawing insane buildings perspective is fun exercise and all, I find out that you won't really need much of it in comics unless you draw action, adventure and... what else requires buildings and shit?

Its nice display of effort, but if your comic is just a very short one especialy if it's just slice-of-life characters discussing about a mundane topics, it feels redundant. I guess its just something you'll have to practice outside comics?

dawww. is she wearing kneepads?

i'm with you on not always needing to develop everything for every comic. what helps is to just work out a few little exercises that let you cover the basics you need. nobody will notice if every time you draw a building you're drawing it from that one angle you learned to draw buildings from.. or if you tend to keep drawing the same kind of chair. and maybe you don't ALWAYS draw closeups, but you can allow yourself to stick with them as your mainstay if that's the kind of comic you have.
>>
>>82875899
Best so far.
>>
>>82875899
that's an improvement!!! a nice lumpy rock, just like you see in things all the time
now i would alter the shading somewhat, right now the shading would be more appropriate for a large blackberry.. each area is shaded as if it's bulging outward, with its own shading below. you'll actually want to work the shades upward in general irrespective of the location-on-each-facet, and in that way define the shape of each plane. one's sort of scooped out, one's bulging slightly, but most of them are just flat with slight rounding, because that's how erosion usually works.
or just leave it as-is and just lessen the darkness of the bottom-edge shading on the more upper-y bits. i could show you what i mean but you seem competent enough to figure it out

i would like to hear your stories about why you decided to change them or not use them at all
>>
>>82876281
i have a lot of series ideas i never did anything with, usually just ideas for things that aren't comics (because i can't make a videogame, but i can't stop designing them either), or didn't do MUCH with, but... if it was ever intended to go in the comic, it went in. eventually. there's a few still waiting their turn.

they absolutely do change though. Sometimes it's just a mistake i make, sometimes i realize they're redundant, sometimes i look at what age they would logically be and it turns out i had them characterized wrong for that age.. Sasha was going to be a wildchild type, which would have been pretty redundant. then I realized she was 12, and at the rate she ages that makes her fully grown. Thankfully that made the animalistic contrast even funnier, and provided another adult in the cast. then her personality developed into the extremely chilled-out one. granted that ended up being pretty boring, but it's a good balancer to the rest of the cast.

i have tried sketchbook a few times, i and im not good with it, so i don't use it for my comic

have you tried using something else like sai, mangastudio or artrage i think they are easier to use, artrage 4 came with my tablet and it kinda works like sketchbook but i think it emulates how drawing irl feels way better

i think you should try it, because it looks like that page took you a lot of time to make for how simple it is, the tools these other programs give you could at least let you draw lineart faster so you could concentrate more on other things like choosing your colors or shading your characters to make it look better
>>
>>82877629
thats the strategy of some people. Make fanarts first and when you've gained followers, you'll proceed to make your own stuff. You'll off some fans and they'll unfollow, but you'll still get many fans when compared to just sprouting out of nowhere like a mushroom. Be careful not to get tied down doing slavework for other fandoms.

it'll be good practice. right now you're playing off of a game, in the future you could play off of more broad and universal things and have your own thing. or you can keep doing fanstuff forever if you're good at it. it's wide open!

Alright /hyw/ be real with me:
First: Can I get caught making money off of a comic using a pirated version of Comic Life? If so, how would I be able to get caught and is it avoidable?

Second: Is it legal to use the built-in default font of Comic Life to make money off of my comic, even though the font is one that must be purchased from the creator?
Disregarding whether my Comic Life copy is legal or not, (we'll just assume it is,) if it INCLUDES that font, is it safe to assume I can legally profit off of it?
>>
>>82882105
look at this idiot. of course you can get caught, there's a key embedded in the images created with a licensed copy, showing it's legitimate.

just buy the product or use something else. the font even more so, anyone who catches it can fuck up your work.
>>
>>82882105
if that ever happened, the most you would owe them is the purchase price of the software. and that is an incredibly unlikely thing ever to happen unless you started working as a professional artist at a company with an office and shit (at which point theyre being fucking raped by license fees. one of many ways in which running a business fucking sucks, and everyone wants to blame them for all of society's ills despite them being just coated head to toe in leeches)
>>
>>82882194
>>82882206
Two different but still insightful answers, I guess.
If I may ask a follow up question or two:
If I purchase the software, can I legally use an older version that I've pirated?
The official site only offers Comic Life 3, but I fucking hate it, and have been sticking with a much older version that they don't offer through legitimate means anymore. I'd gladly pay them for it, I just don't want to upgrade.

Otherwise, I know most legit comic authors draw their own panels and speech bubbles, but are there any programs out there that are good for that stuff besides CL?
>>
>>82882105
If you're just rendering jpegs or whatever, I sincerely doubt there's any way to tell you're using a pirated copy of the software. The font is another matter, and it depends on the font's associated license. I'm too lazy to look it up myself, but if you're in doubt just find something appropriate on Blambot or whatever to use instead - there are plenty of fonts out there that look perfectly fine.
>>
>>82882330
i know nothing about comic life and i can fucking guarantee you that any and all programs are a better alternative.
>>
>>82882350
Nah, I'll just pony up the 20 bucks for the font if unsure. I've already posted hundreds of pages using it and paying for the license would be a lot less hassle than redoing all of those pages with a free font.

The software is what I was more worried about, but I've definitely got a better idea of things after asking about it here.
>>
>>82882459
>HUNDREDS of pages
>using this gimped fisher price software
Do you even want to do comics?
>>
>>82882497
i think he wants to do hundreds of them, and that's why he's using that.
>>
>>82882497
Just because it's marketed to normies doesn't mean it can't be used to make nice, simple pages.

Now stop worrying about what other people are doing and get back to working on your comic, anon.
>>
>>82882459
That's fair, retooling all your lettering would be a pretty huge pain in the ass with that many pages. I'm pretty sure most every program out there short of MS Paint will let you draw your panels and speech bubbles easily enough though, if you're worried about that for some reason. I just use Photoshop for my stuff, and even without any comic book specific tools it's really not a problem. I don't think you'll have much trouble there, I'd just use whatever works for you.

Yes! this is it! thanks!

The other one was still around when CitT was also still around. He's making a comic which is about his self-insert and it was depressing as fuck yet people here were still motivating him to do it. He posted 2-3 pages and disappeared. It also happened around the same time an anon called "1comicpageperday" or something appeared and was producing quality pages with differing artstyles per page. The latter, I didn't bother looking for. It was those two that only appealed to me.

What. There has been no pages from him for several threads now. The other one has a male MC in his 20s. Like I said, everything was monotone. The MC has square glasses and his drawings of buildings and outside people are so bleak. His MC was drawn facing a computer and the room looked dark. Those are the only infos I have. Info on the artist is that he looked like he's already depressed and the comic isn't making things any better. That's why I wanted to check on him, but whatever.

I'm trying to come up with a name for a faction and a device in that space project I've been working on but can't think of anything, any help?

The idea is that that there's a universal Illuminati type cult composed of lots of high class individuals from all species and planets. Their defining characteristic is that they use supercomputers modeled after a monolith they found long ago to decide all of their actions and major decisions. The funny part is that these supercomputers resemble polished black spheres full of a hypercooling bright blue liquid with a small window that displays a triangular monitor which shows only basic white text amid the blue fluid. The organization plants sensors everywhere and has omniscopes that generally spy on everything simultaneously so their supercomputers can consistently calculate the best course of action in any given situation as long as they have the sufficient data. So in general they're just using a hyperadvanced "magic 8-ball" to make decisions that concern the fates of countless planets and entire populations.

They are one of the few factions to use time travel and do this using a handheld device that "shoots" the target into the desired time but since matter cannot be created nor destroyed there is a container connected to the device that stores a random assortment of items from the time period that equal the target's mass resulting in filled up time capsules every time someone is shot.

I'm looking for something sort of classic and old fashioned sounding for the organization itself, but I really have no clue what to call their computers or the time gun thing.

Here's some rough sketches that hopefully aren't too embarrassing. I've never posted pencil-work here.
>>
>>82884674
Assuming it's not a super serious setting.

Call 'em the Ballers.

Maybe the computers could be called "∞balls"

Is there a problem with just calling the time guns "time guns"? Even if there was a technical term, I expect that's what everyone who wasn't a scientist would call them.

The setting is cartoony but I like things to have vague logic to them and the ability to take things seriously if needed. I actually really like the idea of "Ballers" as a slang/derogatory term for them by conspiracy theorists or their enemies but I would like to have a more serious name they'd refer to themselves as. Same with the time gun. I like to have a slang/funny name and a serious one for near everything in universe. for instance there's a group of mostly mechanical serpentine aliens who construct all of their devices through complex plumbing and pipework as opposed to circuitry. While they refer to themselves as "The Cynex" everyone else informally calls them "Drain-snakes"

The Ballers have a rival faction of Giger like aliens who instead of trying to make history seek to destroy it and reverse existence in general since they believe the universe is beyond saving. Due to their hermit like tendencies and their constant effort to leave as little of a universal footprint and ecological impact as possible their "serious" name is the "Villithists" So I suppose the ballers could be something opposite to "Vilified" like "The Commended" or something.

>>82885009
There isn't one, honestly if I'm somehow allowed to babble endlessly about my absurd sci fi concepts here and post pencil sketches while using a username synonymous with all of my major online accounts I think you can probably post some of your art anonymously worry free. We're all here to improve.
>>
>>82885009

STILL working on this, dude? How many weeks has it been?

The cat looks bad, but more importantly, the way you made her kills the joke.
The main point is there, the cartoon cat sees a hot something, we think it's a girl, but it's another cat. What you are missing is the subtle layered visual gags that turns this from "a little joke we may have seen before" to a trully funny strip. And it's all related to the realistic cat.

The other part of the joke you missed is the "I can't see this at all", meaning we shouldn't agree with the cartoon cat, or at least relate to him in any way... but you made the cat with a fat butt, and I am not sure if it was on purpose, but that's what kills part of the joke.
Right now her butt almost has human proportions, so while it's still not hot to us, when we see the cat we think "welp I guess I could see what he is talking about, it really is a fat butt", so we instantly forgive the cartoon cat for the misunderstanding, we understand his point of view. Sure, it wasn't a hot girl, but he never said it was, he yelled about a fat butt, and a fat butt was indeed there, it's our fault we are not into cats.
In other words, it's funny when we see something totally unexpected that gets us off guard, yet we are still presented with what was announced: a fat butt.

Now, a smaller, less important bit you missed that kinda also ties in with the "I can't see this at all", is that the female cat should look real, the farthest as possible of the cartoon cat. I think you get this, because you made her act like a real cat, which is pretty funny, but her face is still too cartoony, and she is too round, much like the cartoon cat. We don't find the female cat hot for obvious reasons, but we also should ask ourselves subconsciously how is it the cartoon cat sees him and the real cat as the same, why would he find her hot. But right now they are too close in appearance still.

Forgot to mark your post, but here is the conclusion and tldr:

You should make the female cat skinnier, with a more realistic generic face and body. Also work on the curve of her body, exaggerate the arc more, reduce its stomach so it makes an arc with the back, stretch her legs, don't worry about her pose being cartoony, just her appearance.

For a serious name, maybe "the society of X", where X is the name of the place where the monolith was found. Or maybe a reference to the guy who founded the society?

As for the time gun's technical name, I'd go with something technobabblish like "Tachyonic Exchanger - Portable." or TEP for short. Then you can have a nerdy scientist type constantly going off about people calling it a "time gun" or "tep gun"

Hi co, I have a few ideas for webcomics, I know how i want to start them, what my characters are, But I'm not entirely sure how I want to end the stories. I kind of don't want to write endings for them, since I just want to have fun. So would people be ok with webcomics that were sort of made like a cartoon show? Just random stories that show of scenes and characters? Most of my ideas are kind of monster of the week type scenarios, heros defeat a villain and all is well with the world. So maybe it could work. But I guess most people would like to know a comic is going somewhere with its plot.
>>

Gag comics and slice of life are among the most popular genres in webcomics, and they generally don't have a defined end point either. Hell, a lot of print comics follow some approximation of the monster-of-the-week approach, and they get by just fine. As long as the stories and characters are interesting and you can engage your readers, you should be good.
>>
>>82887176
It's fine to just be gag-a-day or episodic short narratives, but if there's an overarching plot, I want that plot to progress and eventually reach a conclusion, rather than just going on and on and on.

I am using marker, although Copic is an expensive habit. Mostly Sketch C series C1-C7, I had to buy refill on C1-C3 now.

To finish a page takes anywhere from 10 hours to weeks. Although that's not a tally of all of my actual hours working on the thing, I have to do it on and off because jobs and obligations.

I do feel bad, but too much because I don't know if anybody actually reads my comic.

When I finished the first chapter, the plan is to print it myself, actually. That has always been the plan. There are people who have expressed interest, but in the end I just feel its better to have full control.

>>82870879
Maan, it doesn't take a lot of courage to streak by yourself on an uninhabited island, if you know what I mean.

Although I don't really follow on the ass backward about that term, you might need to draw the line for me.

Some update on the page, after spending time with these characters again, I feel like throwing in a few more pages just to show people how badass they are in my mind..
>>
>>82890713
I actually ended up making a lot of changes on these character's design as sort of afterthought, because I wanted to distinguish their outfits more.

These are old characters from an even older project, predating original Rococo (when she was known as Melody...) , even. Its been almost 10 years, kind of shocking when I think about it...

no. 'x happened' and 'x has happened' are slightly different things. the thing about being a native english speaker is you don't examine your language very closely, and it's a lot more complicated than you take it to be. plus there are literally too many nuances for everyone to use, or even HEAR them very often

"Something went wrong" is poor grammar. "Wrong" is an adjective, and should only modify nouns. It's a common enough mistake in speech that it's fine for dialogue, but it also sounds out of place in context. >>82895232 is probably correct in his assessment.
>>
>>82897699
arent they all
i feel like she should be fat and have messy hair
>>
>>82897728
It seems to me like "Wrong" is modifying the noun "something" rather than the verb "went", though.
>>
>>82897728
>>82897799
the problem is there is no adverb form of wrong, so what you get is an unspoken prepositional phrase. 'something went in a way that made it wrong'
it's okay with 'went' because that's "to go" which is every bit as malleable as "to be" in terms of not being a proper verb. for example you 'go crazy' or very well went crazy, in the past. wrong here is the object of went, not its modifier. wrong is WHERE it went.

Native English speakers say things wrong all the time. It's the writer's duty to create individual character voices, not write everyone as if they all got their grammar out of the same textbook.
>>
>>82897699
Even so, are you sure it's a good idea to involve those views in the story? Aside from the radfems themselves (I don't imagine they're your intended audience anyway), a lot of people will just go "ugh, politics" when they see stuff like that.
