What are all the must-knows when it comes to making money, (or even a living,) off of webcomics?

What are the most important things to do/know?

What are the best/easiest ways to make that money?
Ads?
Merch?
Patreon?
>>
I got the hard drive back.

A very mysterious anon sent me an iso via email, and walked me through all the command prompts I needed to do.

It was extremely arcane but it ended up working.

Thank fuck.
>>
>>82753385
>Ads
Adblock'd
>Merch
Additional responsibility. Inaccessible unless your comic has already established nice fanbase.
>Patreon
Easiest shit. No wonder why people flock to this. Sure, there are creators willing to payback their patreons with bonus goodies, but for some, they can get away with almost next to nothing (like just promising more artstreams, faster deliveries, etc.)

Also, lookout for Imzy.
>inb4 leddit shill
That site is a carebear version of the site the creator just got fired from, seems real shitty now aint it, but they have this "tipping" thing where people who liked your comment/product/whatever, can tip you irl money just for posting it. If it ever takes off, well you know what to do. Don't expect to get the full amount tho. Its easy as balls to please people, but that site will still get a % because they said that's how they'll keep the site alive instead of ads.
>>
>>82753632
Good stuff. Thanks m8.

I just hope I can find good Patreon incentives. I hate the idea of putting "exclusive" stuff behind a paywall.
>>

Think it would kill you to be a bit more peppy about such an exciting medium that functions off the cogs of imagination and wonder?

Setting up a Patreon myself; just need to come up with a "Why you should support me" statement that's a little more than "gib moni pls huahuehuahuehuahue".

I'm considering having high-res artwork go up on the Patreon, while smaller versions are released for free in the usual social media outlets. Similarly with comic strips - a larger strip will appear on the Patreon first, while the usual size will appear for free on the main website later. Everything will be free to view in standard definition, or you can pay for early access to high-def content. Maybe have one or two things (eg wallpapers) that are Patreon exclusive.
I'll also have a sketch commission tier; get a personalised sketch once a month.
>>
>>82753984
The rest sounds good, but can you trust your patreons not to leak the high def stuff?
>>
>>82753689

>Adblock'd
Lately, I've come to believe that far fewer webcomic readers use Adblock than I previously thought. I still won't be mad at them for using it, even on my site, and I won't ever ask them to whitelist me or anything, because I too use Adblock. I'm no hypocrite.

Speaking of ads, there's a link in the Pastebin in >>82752850 that I really feel should be removed in future /hyw/s, namely the one about which advertising services to use to make money, because I checked it last night and it's really, REALLY out of date. Multiple ad services it discusses are now defunct. It's just not a good resource anymore.

>>82753385
>What are the most important things to do/know?
You can't make money if your comic isn't good.

That's not true in the slightest, but pretend it is so you push yourself to be better.

I thought each panel is very well executed, although something to think about is to have the panels not to have such logical progression, and leave certain things to the imagination rather than guiding the viewer step by step.

I haven't seen the previous page, one idea is to have the first panel a bit further away in terms of camera placement. So you get a larger view of relative position of each actors. Occassionally putting back more in general is good idea, sometimes its a pain in the ass if you have to draw certain type of bg tho.

>>82752843
This is as far as I am going to work on this page, its taking up too much time I am just going to move on. On the bright side, I know exactly how many pages my first chapter is going to be, 38. Because I completed all of the dialogue heavy storyboarding for it. I will start writing summery for the second chapter soon.

Your perspective is nice, to the point where it makes your anatomy look really bad in comparison. Especially on pages that feature the characters in those high level perspectives.

It's unavoidable though, as you can only learn so fast as you go. But I would say spend less time on the buildings and details and more on anatomy for now.

I don't want to flood the thread with endless works in progress (like a certain shitposter in here) but this is my current page
A lot of people don't like the bluntness in the last panel, and I'm inclined to agree, but I can't think of what to replace it with.

I want to ask for feedback on my comic but I've always been scared that the feedback would be all negative and tell me to change things that I like too much to change.

Like, I'm not scared of the actual criticism, I'm scared of looking like a douche if I accept all of it but don't change the bad things.

Am I a shitter or is this normal?

Depends on the things, IMO. The comic I'm writing is kind of down-to-earth, but at the same time very cartoony and sometimes dramatic. A cartoony art style as well.

If someone wanted me to change that, I couldn't do it, because it's the kind of comic I always wanted to write. If someone criticized the STRUCTURE of the story, though, I would listen to that.

I would take all technical criticism seriously, but the subjective stuff a little less. You can't please everyone.
>>
>>82783685
You will only look like a douche if you have a history of asking for opinions, people giving you tips and sugesting changes that are widely agreed upon that would be an improvement, and you kept not changing anything, or changing insignificant stuff to "throw us a bone" because you know better.
In any case post your comic faggot.
>>
>>82783685

Contrary to what the people who post here would have you believe, you don't have to change things about your own work if you don't want to.

Critique and advice are extremely important, don't get me wrong, but some of the "critique" around here straight-up people going out of their way to bash each other. Critique isn't a one-way street where you have to do exactly what the person that is being critical of you tells you to do.

People tend to forget that around here.

Fuck. Is there any way you guys have ever forced inspiration to come? Because when it happens, it's 1000x better than the stuff I write when I actually sit down and try to come up with stuff on purpose. Pic unrelated.
>>
>>82784065
>I would take all technical criticism seriously
That's some of the stuff I worry about.

Like fonts or site colors. I've grown so comfortable with them I really wouldn't know what to do to change them.

Don't people bitch about things like white text on black backgrounds?

I also use Comic Life's default font; Lint McCree Intl BB, but I doubt anyone would take issue with that at least.

I'll post it eventually. Just have to gather the courage and turn off my autism switch. Maybe after I've lurked and gotten more comfortable in these threads.

It's true people don't have to listen to criticisms and advices, but it doesn't change the fact that if you keep asking for a critique, people take their time to respond to you, and you keep ignoring them, you will look like a douche. Specially if what you do is bad and you never improve.

>>82784170
This is specially funny to me, because I was going to bash the Dewd on that post, I had cropped this image to use as an example, but I thought it was unfair, he listens to criticisms. What a fight it was for him to change the sideburns on this awful character though.
>>
>>82783685
It's normal man, just learn to separate the criticism from the flat out insults. People tend to say harsh shit on the Internet when in reality they don't actually care that much. There are some people who know their shit that can help you on here but some that are on the same or lower level skill wise who will give you poor advice so take it all with a grain of salt.

>>
>>82784242
well what i usually do is imagine my characters interacting with eachother in different place, and based on what they are doing i decide what would be good to add to the story

i also base some of the concepts of my comic on songs that i like

>TFW get a whole scene in my head as a sudden inspiration
>It's great, and probably the best thing I've written so far

i know that feel, the last time it happened was while i was about to sleep, and i had an idea for a scene where one of my characters found an object that was just the thing i needed to connect most of the stories i had planned, so i wrote it quickly on my phone, it was just a sudden thing that was so obvious but for some reason i had never tought before

now the name of that object will probably be the title of my comic

it still has a long way to go, i might change it

but to answer your question on one hand, yes people getting killed in this project are meant to be taken kind of seriously.

on the other hand, not to seriously that people get triggered by it or dont want to read it anymore because there are to many gruesome violent deaths in this webcomic... ya know?

its not as graphic as as the sisters recent killing of conrad, which was really detailed and violent way to kill off a character, very gruesome and very awesome by the way!

but im sure when the sisters guy gets famous enough he will get annoying messages from sjw's complaining its to violent and there to triggered to keep reading and he needs to censor it or change the page somehow, cuz sjw's suck like that

i want to avoid sjw's completely so how trggered can they be at the cartoony deaths i portray with silly faces of death, when amellia died on the previous page she also had a silly look on her face as she was dying

but in panel 1 of this page now that she is dead she has a serious dead look on her face now that the damage is done and it doesn't matter

ya know?

This is one really lame excuse for putting silly faces on characters dying, specially since there's a simple way of dealing with sjw complaints that makes everybody happy, and that is: you ignore them.

By the way

hmm... i see what you mean, but i really like drawing girls, and i really like drawing girls with big and or revealing boobs, so sjw's cant complain if im drawing it because i love drawing it and not to exploit my female characters or make a quick buck or get a ton of views off of them, ya know?

i dont draw my original girl characters as fan service or anything, its just the way i personally like drawing them

and i think sjw's and feminazi's will be completely understanding of this and wont even complain about it or mention it ever

A bwuh...?
>>
>>82783685
I ONLY want negative criticism of my comic. My goal is to make the best comic possible, and the only way anyone can do that is by putting their ego aside. I've received criticism in this thread about my comic that at first I went "well, fuck that guy, he doesn't know what he's talking about" but as time went on and I kept digesting it, I got to the real truth and heart of the matter and that very criticism that I hated ended up helping to improve my comic.

There are people in these threads that are so bull-headed they shut out all criticism because THEIR creative vision is THE perfect one and THEY know what the fans want and THOSE critics must be evil trolls, but in reality there are very few trolls in these threads and it's absurdly easy to separate trollposts from legitimate criticism (an overwhelming majority of critiques are legitimate, very very VERY few are trolls).

You want your comic to be good, right? Listen to criticism. Your hubris creates an artificial ceiling, and criticism gives you the humble hammer you need to smash through.

black guy is completely different than brown guy, one of the main characters of demon juice is a black guy, he is half human and half demon, but was born and raised in the hood as a black dude with a black family

his powers are red fire, red fire armor, and has red fire spear and is the only fire knight with wings since the red fire god is a giant red dragon

the sisters conrad is mexican? indian? arabic? egyptian? brazillian? portarican?

brown skins can be anything, even Hawaiian

An educated guess. I'm sure there's a deeper, more complex reason. Maybe he had a rough upbringing and when his parents died in a fire suspiciously he came to miss the feeling of resentment sent his way. So he comes here for his daily dose of hate. Sometimes he posts shit talking to himself as anon, then puts his trip on argues with himself.

Maybe he doesn't even realize it and he has a split personality. Maybe he thinks people actually like him. Maybe he thinks that people hate him for reasons out of his control.

There's definitely delusion in there. I need to keep reading his posts to see deeper into his psyche.

Decided to switch which comic is going up this week. I reworked the comic about art I posted a while ago. I think it's less aimless now and less confusing as it omits the weird line about "not beating the chinese". Shame since hearing that sentiment irl is one of the weirdest things that ever happened to me but whatever. Sorry it's just more thumbnails for now.
>>
>>82800062

Not exactly - there's less competition in any given fetish community than in mainstream illustration, but conversely, there's less money to go around. Try to find a pond that's the right size for your fish.

>>82800383
For what it's worth, I thought the line about beating the Chinese made perfect sense.
>>
>>82800383
>>82800482
Now I'm curious what the line was and how it fit.
>>
>>82800520
The guy criticized Mimi's drawing and told her she would never beat the Chinese. It's a "chinese cartoons" reference.
>>
>>82797649
>>82797703
>>82798253
Stop bringing stuff like that up.

It sets a terrible precedent to even tolerate it.
>>
>>82800520
The comic is based on something that happened to me. A guy in a starbucks told me to quit art because "I'll never beat the chinese". I think he what he was getting at was the idea that everything is made in China on top of assuming that comics, anime and manga are all the same thing (and made in china). The guys first language was also not english.
>>
>>82800482
It made sense to some people I showed it to but imo it felt really awkward. Maybe I'll make a comic about the actual event in the future.
>>
>>82800685
I'd want to use that line too if I heard it. But yeah, not sure it would mesh with your current punchline.
>>
>>82800685
that guy wants to fuck
>>
>>82800928
For what it's worth, the original punchline was the art being offended and walking away. Having the art punch the guy in the face is funnier though. I am concerned that people may think it's one of those "getting back at the haters" kind of comics though.

is having my fantasy protagonist act like the average player in a TES game for ages until i decide to actually reveal that they and their friends are speshul and get to save the world a bad idea?

it's mostly an excuse for worldbuilding and possibly buying time until i think through the proper story.
>>
>>82801351
You mean just doing sidequests and exploring the world?
It's fine so long as the story that IS happening is interesting.
>>
>>82760615
Nope.
My issue isn't entirely with the ads themselves, but with the various datamining networks they're linked to. Internet advertising is a hellish beast and I want it starved. Unfortunately content creators who aren't creative in how they're funded are caught in the crossfire. Hopefully if enough people take to it [a] ad companies will die or [b] they'll shape up and improve their behaviour.

I doubt the latter though, most people take issue with the most obvious problem - flashy adverts and PLAY NOW MY LORD, instead of the more insidious problem.

Not to mention the massive ethical questions advertising tends to bring up - "Think of me as Evil" is a pretty interesting read:
http://assets.wwf.org.uk/downloads/think_of_me_as_evil.pdf

>The truth is that marketing raises enormous ethical questions every day—at least it does if you’re doing it right. If this were not the case, the only possible explanations are either that you believe marketers are too ineffectual to make any difference, or you believe that marketing activities only affect people at the level of conscious argument
>Neither of these possibilities appeals to me. I would rather be thought of as evil than useless.
- Rory Sutherland [Written in his former capacity as President of the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA)]

That 100% depends on how good you are at writing said shenanigans.
>>

I think you can keep that one up pretty much forever so long as the inconsequential shenanigans are well executed. Like, a lot of comics are nothing but inconsequential shenanigans.

Speaking of cat sounds, I'm considering whether it would be a funny running gag for animals to make their sounds in runes, or at least using more Scandinavian-inspired sounds, like "mjau" for cats (I don't think anyone knows what vikings thought cat sounds were spelled like, unfortunately).

This is because I get too focused on paneling, delivering early, etc. The only way I improve is that when I draw other things or take my time reaaally slow on comics. I honestly think it'll depend on you and your work ethics. If you want to churn out fast and cheap things like me, you won't improve. If you take your time and try to surpass your idols and do all cool new tricks in comic, you're good.

From personal experience, I've improved a LOT since the beginning I feel like.
Drawing comics means you'll have to look up perspectives and poses you normally wouldn't and it'll teach you to draw FASTER.
Of course, studying anatomy and general figure drawing are a HUGE help and probably what everyone should start with before going on to develop their own style

Pic sort of related I'm working on; I happened to compare it to a fanart I did of the same comic over a year ago (though that one was more of a joke) and the improvement is noticeable

Of course, you must WANT to improve in order to get better; complacency is an artist's greatest enemy
>>
>>82806684
>Drawing comics means you'll have to look up perspectives and poses you normally wouldn't and it'll teach you to draw FASTER.
i've gotten a lot better at that part doing my comic yeah! also backgrounds. some parts have improved, some have stagnated.
>>
>>82805005
Dude, this doesn't pack the "punch" the other punchline had, but it's way funnier somehow. I think it's because cartoon punching the guy reads as one of those other hacky feel good comics girls love to post on facebook (which means maybe the punching version will bring you some popularity, so you may be choosing between good content or more views I guess).

But anyway, I would say keep this old version, just work on the pacing and the reactions. I know the reactions I drew don't really match your style, but at least make the old man more shocked, the purple around his eyes don't read as dark circles, they are too close from the rosey cheeks from the other panels.
>>
>>82806903
I prefer the second to the last panel sweating man. Looks more alive and it makes nore sense for his eyes to follow where the cat was going.
>>
>>82806903
>>82806992
Agree with pretty much all of this. Dialogue was never an issue, but tightening the pacing wouldn't hurt at all.
>>
>>82805699
It can help you improve, but you have to study other stuff while you draw comics. Drawing comics can help you, since it will forcing you to be drawing constantly, but depends on how you do it.
You can write panels the most ambicious way possible and challenge yourself to draw exactly what you envision, which will give you context to draw different poses and angles, or you can write lazy workarounds, make a lot of scenes focusing on faces only, a lot of waist up shots, avoiding scenary or not having any stablishing shots at all.
By having a good writer you won't have to preocupy yourself with this stuff, but if you are going to write it yourself, then you have to be carefull with going the easy route every panel. Not only you will stagnate, but also your comic will suck.

By the way, I got a lot better in highschool drawing comics only, but my biggest and fastest jump in skill was after getting into /ic/ and doing some serious studies.
>>
>>82806903
Not gonna lie, this is how i was going to change it if I decided on this one. I appreciate the expressions though.
I guess my issue with this kind of stuff is that its not what I would normally choose to write. I'm more interested in pages like "Doll" but because of the audience I happen to have on tumblr and because of wanting to try new things, I'm making stuff I normally wouldnt. I don't think it's bad as it wouldnt hurt me to be more varied but its hard thinking in a voice that isn't mine. I appreciate the help.

>>82805005

>>
>>82806260
>>82806684
>>82807404
yes, I was thinking of dividing between comics and master studies and spend time on both.
And I will spend alot of time drawing and not focus on making it quick.

But I guess the problem is finding a writer because there's that chance I'll cheese out the panels by making them easy to draw.

>I got a lot better in highschool drawing comics only, but my biggest and feastest jump in skill was after getting into /ic/ and doing some serious studies

my problem is that I'm not serious enough when doing studies. I guess I'm getting there bit by bit, by taking my time more each study but it's going really slow. That's why I thought of making comics so I have that 'fun' in my schedule.

Line weights shouldn't be a huge deal since you know how to color well already, at least. Takes some practice and experimentation to figure out what works and there's definitely an art to it, but it looks like you already know enough about what you're doing to dive into it.

Granted I did the opposite of what you've been doing and drew almost exclusively in black and white and greytones for years, so maybe I'm wrong. Inking has never given me too much trouble though.

>>
>>82808701
Well, just find some B&W pages you like and see what the artists there are doing. Any competent inker has a reason for the way they're placing their lines, and all you need to do is work out the logic behind it - which shouldn't be too tough if you've been able to figure out the tougher stuff like anatomy, perspective, color theory, and all that already. I personally look at folks like Ryan Ottley moreso than eastern artists when I'm working on my inks, but there's definitely some great stuff everywhere. First step is obviously just to enable pressure sensitivity in whatever your program of choice is, and figure out how you want to tune that. I personally work traditionally for everything but color, so I don't know where you'd begin with it.

I also probably spend more time inking than I do coloring too (if we exclude flatting, because fuck flatting), so there's also that. I end up spending anywhere from four to six hours inking most pages, I think. Might be a lot faster digitally though, I'm not sure; working with a quill can be pretty annoying at times.

I draw with pen tool. Chisel is drawing with something more thicker and better than pen tool, like a brush tool. But the thing with brushes is that it's usually shite. You can see that from the ends of the lines, theyre not as clean as pen, but the pen is not as lively and as sensitive as the brush (unless you fiddle with your settings). So what they do is use thick brush and be very patient - they erase the unwanted thickness, like chiseling a marble rock. So while other people do their lines with one fast stroke, the chisel is the one where you'll keep coming back to the same line to erase, redraw, erase. Im probably not making any sense right now lmao. You see this with people who paint but still make linearts. I saw this trick when they were discussing One Punch Man art.

It does make sense, though it sounds like a nightmare if you have to retouch many of your lines like that. I even use a brush pen when inking when I need a thick line, but I don't really correct anything outside major mistakes. Is it something that actually comes up much with Murata's work? I watch him stream his work on OPM from time to time, but I haven't noticed him making corrections like that too often. Maybe it's something I should pay more attention to.

lmao if thats sarcasm, you should try starting out with shit lineart first and trying to polish the turd with layers of colors. Its what I did for years because I like colors more than I like linearts, and now that I'm b&w-ing, Im now paying for my crimes. I dont have pic to post, but if I just thicken the lineart, my drawings actually become messy and the over detailing of some parts makes it even uglier. I... its 300x300 (3000?) in paint tool sai which I cut in half, and then resized in Paint to around 30% of its original size. I forgot if its in pixels or what, but it gets bigger than the most stretched out magazine scans from danbooru.

Thats why I dont feel like its the size anymore. I have to change things.

My pages are 3075x4725 at full size, so if it's 3000x3000 that doesn't sound terrible. What's so bad about it, can't you just work with the magnification at whatever you're comfortable with? Or were you planning to make the canvas larger?

Anyone else submitting their comic/pitch to the Hiveworks thing this month? I'm a bit tempted to do it because it'd be cool to get in even if it's a long shot, but then I think that the low probability of my comic being accepted vs. the time I'll waste preparing a proper submission just doesn't make it worth it.

You know how when a webcomic artist does something that a subset of their readers don't like they get a lot of negative feedback on that issue from that subset? That's what's happening, it's not rocket sqience. If you draw pinup girls you'll get emails from readers who don't enjoy pinup girl. Grow a thicker skin and keep drawing what you enjoy, you pussy.

i don't do this often, but i wouldnt mind a little suggestion here at the point where i can still tweak things because i havent done any solid drawing yet.. like mostly the pacing and jokes.
this one just isnt really working. it's the first half of what was going to be a stupidly long one, but there's just nowhere else it can get cut off.
and the next one is going to be almost all talking as well.. basically
>they humorously insist they are their carefully set up aliases
>ryou points out how anyone who actually met them before would see them a mile away
>then specifically shoots down the uzi disguise and reveals his past dealings with her
>then costumes are humorously ditched and everyone's back on-model

but that's too many more panels to fold into this one. then the one after that involves
>ryou escaping
>setting up some shit for them to deal with while he does so
>them humorously taking care of that

i could type out the whole scripts if anyone really thought they could help re-order the shit better, but.. well for now it's sleepytime.

is it a bad idea to draw a comic about other countries' fighter planes? It's only 4-5 panels (so 1 page) and it'll show other countries' bitching fighter planes while country X has garbage for a "plane". It's simple concept, but I feel like there's a thin line where country X will be spammed with "lel stay salty", instead of it being just a lighthearted/cute comic. Nice outfit, especially the shoulder-mail, but the use of color is...odd, I suppose? And the character herself isn't too visually interesting, she's almost stick figure-esque due to a combination of simplicity and a lack of focus. Maybe try reproportioning her? It's rather drab and dull, nothing really "pops." You have a dull purple and then black, and white itself is a very cold color so what little white you have doesn't help the design, and in fact the white that you have on her feet (but not the soles) which I assume you put there to break up the design really just looks out of place.

I'm flip-flopping back again, to leave it as "just a cookbook", but emphasise "It's a PIE!".*

I'll leave it as an exclamation, as that's the beginning of anger and frustration setting in.

Attached pic is the rough layouts for page 3, the second half of this quest. The large panel at the top will be a map showing their route taking them to all the little peaceful villages (ovals), and bypassing the exciting dungeons (squares).
I'll have to be careful with the size of the lettering, or cut down the number of locations.

Panel 2 is where they're tired and upset. I'll add dialogue, so it's
"We've fed chickens, milked goats, and found a lost pig! When are we going to get to the dungeon?!"

*Such is the nature of writing, trying fine tune
> It's just a pie!
> It's JUST a pie!
> It's a PIE!
> It's a PIE...
to the best version for the story you want to tell. And then there's all the variations of facial expressions to go with that line...

In regards to this one, yeah, taking off that X on the chest helped it make a little more sense, pragmatically, but the costume still makes no sense. Even the wackiest costume still needs to have some kind of foundation in reality from which you extrapolate the story out of. But before even all that, the knee-pads and the uh...foot guard. The Yin/Yang thing. They have no attach point on the figure unless they're just glued on. But if they're glued on, what's the point of them? Why would the character wear them? What function do they serve?
We can assume that it's explained in the story, but for a suit of armor or costume, they're just kinda there. If anything they're distracting and should just be replaced by a simple kneepad set.

The flatness is a result of all the lines that should be circling the form is instead just almost straight and horizontal. It's like looking at a barrel head on. Some lines would be straight but a lot of lines would be curved. Or like a hula-hoop that you rotate around vertically. You can usually indicate these curves with clothing and wrinkles, or anatomy/shading.

We could agree to disagree, but I think just a few small adjustments could make a big difference. Just a quick mockup, doing what I can without the flats. But I think it focuses everything a little easier. Just more contrast in general would be very beneficial.

Ta - it took a few passes to get the routes to that stage, and I think I'll re-do it to cut out two each of the villages and dungeons.

I'm kind of torn between reading more strips in a similar vein to mine to see what's already been done, and not reading them so I'm not influenced by what's been done (at the moment, it's mostly the latter). Widening my reading couldn't hurt though, I guess.

I've reworked the basic premise of the comic I've been working on to better facilitate ongoing stories and have been reinvigorated as a result.

I suppose my only major criticism so far would be the opening page

There's the well-shaded three-dimensional building...and surrounding it are rock structures that look two-dimensional. The one further away is forgivable but the one up close certainly isn't. It just looks like you couldn't decide if you wanted everything to be super detailed or minimalist. Or you couldn't be bothered halfway through the page and said 'fuck it' (which I hope is not the case).

I know your site is set up so that your most recent page is displayed first but you want your opening page to draw as much interest as possible from your reader to make them continue past the first page.

For other criticism, I'd say that I have to agree with >>82833571 about the body proportions being kinda frustrating in that they look off whenever there's any dynamic perspective being used in your shots. The guy with the mechanical hand especially suffers.

muslims consider dogs unclean and largely avoid them (in the same way they aren't SUPPOSED to drink, but it's not hard to find one drunk at a party)
theyre also just straight up scared of cats because in their neck of the woods, cats are bigger and more vicious and not kept as pets. though dogs are also pretty 'drag your kids off and eat them' in that part of the world too. especially if we're north africans and somalis.

Sometimes I feel like I set the bar so low artistically: flat colors, MS_paint tier, not even real animation.

But then I remember if I set the bar super high, then I'd have to maintain that quality all the time.

What do?

>>82839690
as long as youre doing something cool, fuck how impressive it is.
think about like.. smooth mcgroove.. vs some world famous death metal band that seems to care only about 'how hard can you growl and how many BPM can you get on the drums' and nothing else. who would you rather be?
>>
>>82839690
Do you have more pictures? I think its cute. Simple and cute, but its due to this pic.

I think setting your standards and quality high will be beneficial to you. If you want to top your competitors you have to put out either a very unique product or something that can top theirs. Are you just fine being in that level? Remember, there are plenty like that out their. Not THAT similar, but you get the gist. If its me, I'd work my arse making it high quality to stomp my competitors. So far, this is usually their level lmao dynasty-scans.com/chapters/i_love_mam_daughter

>>
>>82841360
Devil's Advocate: it's entirely possible that he didn't disregard those points, but just chose not to address them in his post.

>>82834789
Not them, but yes, really...just not in the utilitarian sense you're thinking. Everything in art is deliberate and has reason, even if that reason is just "because". However, this has to be considered in relation to character and story.

A character gluing yin-yang magatamas all over their legs has a reason behind it. That reason can be "because she does", but then what this says about her has to be examined, as the same traits may be expressed in more creative, clear, or aesthetically pleasing ways.

In other words, there's nothing wrong with not giving everything deep meaning, but in turn you need to be willing to analyze, dissect and experiment as well as consider what these self-evident choices mean for the character.
>>
>>82841535
Only if that's meant to be a digitigrade leg. Those symbols are placed directly on her kneecaps, and the left let's kneecap is bending unnaturally. But now that you bring my attention to it, those kneecaps are WAY too low.
>>
>>82841779
in this case it's a cartoon within the comic, right? so if anything she should be more over the top
>>
>>82841910
the kneecaps aren't bending at all. the calf is bulging out, and the tibia is flexing slightly as they do
>>
>>82841910
shit you're right about the low knees though. lack of a solid waist will do that.
>>
>>82841917
Exactly, so the yin-yang should either be more deliberately incorporated into the design or more obvious, abstracted and easier for animators to draw consistently.

A cartoon requires TIGHTER character design than comics do, because otherwise animation is a bitch.
>>
>>82841989
>lack of a solid waist

>>
Why is it that our critical critics only come out of the woodworks when it comes to Scrib's works? :^(

So what do you think about pixar's rule rule 7, do you think it is really necessary to have an ending planned

the other day i was listening to a podcast from a guy that wrote a book that is being very successful where i live, and he pretty much said that he writes stories in a similar way to how i do it,, he just lets his characters take him through the adventure and he lets them explain everything that is going on then the ending comes naturally

i don't have an ending for my story yet but i have a ton of adventures and places to explore so i feel like it will come naturally some day

i can kinda see how each caracter is going to grow up and what they will become in the future but i don't count that as knowing my ending because i can still come up with adventures for my characters even after that
>>
>>82842129
i don't get it either. they're obviously much harder on him than others, usually digging up something really piddling, or specifically picking something he does well to claim he does poorly.
but there's usually some legit criticism in there too. but not until he's already made an ass of himself replying to the former.
>>
>>82842283
i think pixar's rules are for writing movies.
>>
>>82842283
diff strokes for diff folks. I want my endings planned just because I want to control everything - every action is set on stone, every dialogue, every panel. If I do what that writer do, I'll end up floating on the sea towards nowhere. But then again, I only work with oneshots so this might be diff for you folks who are into longer stories.
>>
>>82842283
I think that might be harder specifically for visual media like comics and films.

In a novel it's easy - You grow the characters as you write them and they end up choosing their own ending depending on the plot you've already laid out.

In a comic that could potentially drag out forever.

I think it's because it's really easy to pick out the flaws in his work because there's only ever a handful at a time and they stand out like a sore thumb.

Like, when garbage is posted, there's so much wrong it's hard to even start, and with comics like The Sisters and Green Knight the errors are far more subtle.

Then there's this guy who draws well enough that people think it's worth investing the time to critique makes really obvious mistakes pretty regularly. They have art people want to help improve and even a dullard can point out at least one or two flaws. It's an equilibrium.
>>
>>82843292
>Then there's this guy who draws well enough that people think it's worth investing the time to critique makes really obvious mistakes pretty regularly. They have art people want to help improve and even a dullard can point out at least one or two flaws. It's an equilibrium.
This is still Scribs you're talking about, right?
>>
>>82843292
that does make some sense. but the real question is why they seem to go out of their way to nitpick so hard on the bits that absolutely do not stick out like any kind of sore digit
>>
>>82843637
Because they actually do. You could disagree, but you'd be wrong.

See, drawing is a lifelong process. You don't just git-gud overnight. You have to be your own harshest critic and your own biggest fan. Scribs has the biggest fan part down but isn't nearly as analytical of his own work as he should be.

Now, not every person wants to make a career out of art. Some people just want to draw and have fun. That's fine. But make no mistake that a lackadasical approach to art and yourself is the path to mediocrity. If criticism and actual attempts to help another artist along gets labeled as "nit-picky," then just put up a huge disclaimer everytime you post with "I just posted this for fun. I'm not looking to improve or get better."

But why would you even bother with art if you didn't want to improve constantly? Art is fun, and getting better is fun. A lot of criticism (especially on the internet) might be trolling and just flat-out incorrect, but it's the artist's job to be able to filter out what is and isn't valid. A poor artist is one who just discounts everything as a personal attack.

"Listen to what they say, not how they say it."
