How do you guys feel about webcomics by westerners that try to look like anime?
I've always wondered that. I know such comics are a dime a dozen online but I've never asked an actual community about it.
Do you not care as long as it's done well and with effort or do you hate them all whether it's weeb fad or legitimate love for the style?

>>
>>82095943
>How do you guys feel about webcomics by westerners that try to look like anime?

Usually terrible. Styles should be a means to an end, not the end in itself.
There are plenty of good comics with styles that draw on Japanese comics, but none of those are really trying to "look" anime.
>>
>>82096623
>Styles should be a means to an end, not the end in itself.
I thought it was implied that I'm only talking about the style itself, not the reasons for the style.

Do people often give anime-styled comics a chance or are they all written off as "trying to be anime" from the outset?
>>
Most people's definition of "anime" seems to be extremely loose these days anyway.

Some people seem to define anime as "anything that looks kind of cartoony, and has big-ish eyes."
>>
How does one write a good one-shot?
>>
>>82096841
Have a definite goal/ending in mind and work towards it.
>>
>>82096659
If the best description I can give of it is "it looks anime" then it's probably pretty boring and derivative in the first place. It will definitely need to have something else for me to care about it.
>>
>>82096841
Why are there so many posts like these?

"How do I make something good?"

What dumb questions. There's no succinct answers to them.
>>
>>82095279
It would be funnier if the last panel was two panels. One of the writer looking sad, and another of one of the furries running into a wall.

Show, don't tell.
>>
>>82096841
Be economical.
If you're writing a one-shot, you have to trim all the fat from the story.
Try writing the climax and ending, and then writing backwards from that.
>>
>>82097079
THat wouldn't quite convey the idea that they can't hear/see, though. It could come off as "hhheheh dumb furries run into wall hhheheheh." or something lame like that.

Maybe if the last panel showed them being unable to hear, readers would more easily make the connection, but there's no real way to make a decent punchline out of that without it dragging on a few more panels and killing the joke.

Because it actually does.

It helps me. What kind of fanart are you talking about? And what level of quality are you at? You don't have to show me your art, just a similar comparison.
>>
>>82098332
>Because it actually does
Prove it. Show me your site stats pre-and-post fanart. Show me that it has worked for you. I'm not just going to take your word for it. If you have a comic, you can tell how many people read it, so prove to me that you got any significant number of those people through fanart.
>>
>>82097153
Maybe if the reader is given no faith, and if you're that cynical something as simple as a bystander shouting "Hey watch out for that--!" would suffice.
>>
>>82098265
It works if you upload dynamic, varied, and visually interesting fanart.

Focusing on a small clique of properties or drawing single characters standing around won't get you anything unless you're focusing on the hot topic of the month. I don't like GashiGashi, but he's a good example. He gets people's interest by drawing wild art of multiple characters per piece with a bunch of different cartoons and games.
>>
>>82098265
How many comic posts do you have up? Don't start until you have 2-3 months (depends on your posting schedule, I guess).

Biggest mistake I see people make is trying to promote their comic and they barely have any content

Could you show us? It's always easier to give advice when you're not just speaking in general terms.
Well, try to go into realism - what would the characters look like in real life? Then abstract and simplify them in different ways.
There's a hundred million different styles you can get inspired by - whether cartoony stuff, Disney blockbusters, superheroes, classic stuff like Archie, old school Playboy illustrators, pre-Tezuka manga styles, historical art, etc etc.
Do something that's waaay out of what you'd usually take inspiration from.
>>
>>82099929

Cool I'll try that, heres my art gallery.

http://megatronmaster.deviantart.com/
http://www.furaffinity.net/user/megatronmaster/

I showed these somewhere else earlier, but I only got hurtful comments, i would have liked some constructive critique. I know my art isn't that good, but i'm practicing in the hopes of getting better. I think my art style is trying to be too wannabe anime manga, so i'm thinking of redesigning my characters.
>>
>>82099740
>doesn't post proof
So you're talking out your ass, gotcha.
>>
>>82100224
You're getting hurtful comments because you haven't practiced the basics and lack self-awareness with your writing and character design. You copy popular anime/manga on the surface level, but you don't understand why and how these stylistic choices and abstractions work.

If you want to be taken seriously and get feedback, you're going to need to apply yourself and practice basic shapes, three dimensional space/perspective, and anatomy. You still have a long way to go before you reach a point where you can even use the criticism we can give you.

If that sounds like a "hurtful comment" and you ignore it, you simply won't get better. That's all there is to it. I hope you take this to heart and start brushing up on the basics instead of trying to tackle complex art head first.

>>
>>82100443

Nope this is actually helpful to me, The hurtful comments didn't even tell what was wrong with my art. Or what I can do to improve. So Thank you for being honest with me. I really appreciate it.

How would you recomend I practice stuff like that? I can't really afford art classes right now, and I'm kind of worried since i'm already 27, and an artist told me at a con it would probably be the best to go take some classes.
>>
>>82096026
>I swear you've been working on this page for like 2 weeks now and it's barely progressed.
There's that guy who spent like half a year on the first page, 2 weeks is nothing to worry about.
>>
>>82100224
Well, looking at your art, you're not getting hurtful comments because you're drawing anime styled stuff but because your fundamentals, like construction, perspective, line control and posing, are really lacking. Until you get a handle on those things, your character designs and stylistic choice won't matter because you can't implement them properly anyway.
The only advice I'll give you about style right now is to forget about colors and try just working in black and white.

I know this is silly, but I just realized how important emotional drama is to a comic.

I've always used it, but I don't think I fully *got it*.

It's kind of like spices for food. You can definitely overdo it, but if there are no spices at all the basic raw ingredients have to be of incredibly high quality- and even then a small amount of spicing would probably make things better.

I think most comics that fall flat do so because of that lack of emotional drama. Some comics succeed with drama and nothing else!

I don't know why this was such a revelation to me- but yeah.

That's probably because it's a continuation of the events in previous pages. Wilfreda (the girl with the skirt) has been selling lemonade at her school, and she was questioned on it by her teacher, so now she's been told she has to give it away for free.
>>
>>82100674
>How would you recomend I practice stuff like that?
The key is always to do it and do it a lot.

>line control
As warmup, a lot of artists draw a couple pieces of paper's worth of long, straight lines and circles. Lift your arm up off the table and try to use the whole arm, not just the wrist, and do it in one smooth motion.
You might want to practice this with a ballpoint pen so you don't have to worry so much about line weight and width - those are more complicated things that you don't need to worry about for now.

>basic shapes
Almost anything you want to draw can be reduced to simple shapes - human anatomy is super complicated, but if you reduce it to a bunch of boxes, balls and tubes and just draw that, you're off to a good start.
For practice, try copying real life - the best way is probably trying to capture the pose of a live model, but google images can also teach you a lot.

>perspective
You've probably played around with one- and two-point perspective before. Just try drawing your basic shapes in perspective - boxes, tubes, balls. Then do more complex configurations. Then move on to two-point perspective and do the same thing. Then three-point.
Also, read this.

My confidence in this is waning. Not sure where I want to take it.

Any thoughts? Things you don't like, things you do. I'd like more feedback to figure this out
>>
>>82101469
I guess I just mean any drama that derives mostly from emotions. So, not someone dying, not the threat of a planet exploding- perhaps a loved one lying to the person they love. Or a miscommunication resulting in people being pushed apart. Or a love triangle.

All things that I used to consider kind of silly when I was younger (in fiction), but if used subtly really helps draw the reader into the story.

(haha and yes- I try to keep my references more subtle usually, but I couldn't resist)
>>
>>82101607

can i give you a harsh comment on your attitude instead? don't just change shit because someone insulted it. change it because YOU think it's bad. if you don't, then don't.
and i'm not just saying believe in yourself or stick to your guns or anything like that, but the pure and simple fact that if your only compass is the opinions of others, you will always be lost. it's utterly illogical to think 'as long as i change this slightly, ANY change will do, from what people are mad at, then they won't be mad and it will be better!'
>>
>>82101876
That's a very broad generalization that ignores technique and scope.

One of the most famous Japanese comic artists and the creator of one of the first television anime, Osamu Tezuka, drew inspiration from sources like Walt Disney Studios and many other artists followed suit, evolving and changing the "standard" over time. That inspiration is about as deep as Mignola's from Pratt, however.

What anon is complaining about is webcomickers who, instead of being inspired by prollific artists and incorporating elements of their style to create their own, just try to copy their broad understanding of "anime/manga". It's especially common for them to either directly copy one show or to draw from the industry standards instead of unique artists. Basically, those fuckheads who refuse to develop a style and just draw " like" Akira Toriyama or whose art is just a shitty version of a KyoAni show.

Luckily for you I happen to have pretty extensive experience with this!

Now, first of all, my comic's artist already had several hundred followers on Tumblr due mainly to fanart (actually /co/ drawthread deliveries), and he still posts stuff like that, but he always did it because he enjoyed doing so, not for more exposure to pop the comic's viewership. As far as that goes, however, I've noticed only a very slight bump in clickthroughs to my site from Tumblr (where he promotes new updates) as his follower count has grown, so in my personal experience fanart doesn't amount to much, not nearly as much (at least measurably so) as a couple of the resources I'll list.

I would say there's 4 main resources. Some would count Comic Rocket as one as well but I have my doubts about how well that site actually works to give you legitimate views. Anyway, the 4 top click-generating sources that cost me no money, EXCLUDING genre-specific webcomic collectives/groups, are Top Webcomics, The Belfry WebComics Index, Piperka, and Project Wonderful, specifically manually-bid zero-cost ads.

Top Webcomics is one that works better the more popular your comic is. As my comic rose in the rankings, I got more so-called "fresh clicks," that is, clicks where I can be reasonably sure it's a new reader. So if your comic doesn't have much of an audience, or they aren't passionate about voting, or you just don't bother reminding them to vote, you won't get many clicks from TWC, but over the long term I've found it to be extremely good. It takes like 10 minutes to set it up and get a vote link on your website, and it costs no money, and ever since I put my comic on TWC in January of this year I've gotten, well, pic related, for clicks. Around 90% of those are what I would consider "fresh" btw.

Continued in next post.

>>82102187
i disagree. and having looked at the way western art has gone over the years, i feel like the disney standard is still the only acceptable way to draw. anime deriving from it (and the two continuing to stay so similar compared to the alternatives) makes it the best thing.
doing a bad job of it is bad, but it's no worse than it would be if they did a bad job of, like, trying to draw the flintstones.

Post on sites that have similar content with your comic in your sig. For example if it's a fantasy comic post on a fantasy game forum. Actually participate though. Don't just post once and leave.

Do fanart of similar comics that accept fanart submissions. YES FANART YOU PIECE OF SHIT. Just be smart about it. If you do a cape comic don't do fanart for a furry comic. The point is to lure people with similar interests. No I can't "prove it." My comic is too old to be able to have big bumps if I did stuff like that.

Use free ads on project wonderful.

The Belfry WebComics Index is also a valuable addition to click-generation, although long-term it's not super great. I got a very nice boost for 3-4 days after my comic got listed there, which quickly tapered off into 1-5 fresh clicks a week, where it's held steady for a while now. That costs nothing and takes like 2 minutes to set up, also highly recommended by me. In the attached pic you can pretty easily figure out how many fresh clicks total I've gotten since getting on the listing on February 21.

Piperka is another webcomics listing, that seems to be very minimalist and wiki-based, that I did not put my own comic on, rather, someone put me on there, and it gave me a not insubstantial number of fresh clicks for a day or two, but since then it's only been one or two a month. Not super great but it might be worth it to you.

It should be noted that I, as a writer and not the person who does the most time-consuming aspect of the comic, have a lot of time that I can dedicate to obsessing over stats and fiddling constantly with things to optimize clicks and stuff like that. Dudes who do comics all by themselves have it the hardest, and a lot of them probably don't have the time to do all the stuff I do, so if you're one of those guys, keep that in mind and go for what you think is the best use of your time. The next post will talk about zero-cost Project Wonderful advertising.

Continued...

Project Wonderful can be pretty great and useful if you know how to use it properly. It's taken me several months to figure it out, but I think I have a pretty good grasp of how to use it effectively now. That said, I'm not going to ever spend any more money on advertising because I feel that I'm at a level where word-of-mouth is more important than advertising. However, if it doesn't cost me anything, and I've got the time for it (more on that later), I have no problem doing some advertising here and there.

Project Wonderful allows zero-cost advertising, but you have to be smart about it. If you try to bid via campaign, it won't let you bid for free, so all $0 bids you make on ad space have to be done manually. This can take a decent chunk of time. In my experience, 15-30 minutes worth of manual bidding will give me anywhere from 0-10 clicks on my ads over the following 2 days that the ads are active. Did I mention that if you manually bid for $0, the maximum the bid can be active is 2 days? That's how it is.

Now, I have the time to do this because I don't have to actually draw my comic. The attached pic is how the past 30 days have played out for me, with zero dollars spent. If 15-30 minutes for 0-10 clicks is worth it for you, I would heartily suggest Project Wonderful zero-cost advertising, but if it's not, don't bother. Put your comic on TWC and the Belfry and you're good.

Hopefully this series of posts was useful to at least somebody.

well shit it looks like you know where you're going with it. a pair of flawed bros whose flaws bounce off each other. from the beginning concepts i thought the kittyghost was going to be cute but instead he's a gangsta and while that is less endearing, it is still funny. i suppose you could go the 'early seasons cartman' route and make him cute AND a little shit

That's not a good sign, if you don't enjoy your comic, it will start to feel like doing mercenary work.
Try going back to what inspired the premise in the first place, read or watch it again and see if it reignites that motivation in you

Working more on Trype. I decided instead of using the half red half blue uniform coloration that they need to express their alignment that maybe it would be better to have their body be blue and their cybernetics red. Still not sure if I like it, alternative ideas are appreciated.
>>
>>82106071
expressing their alignment via their skin color? what, with paint?
>>
>>82106071
Maybe blue skin with red tattoos?
Or have her skin have gradients between violet and a reddish purple.
I feel like the cybernetics would look cool with some apple-style white casing parts.
>>
>>82106123
She's part of a group that undergoes an extreme procedure to replace their blood with an alternative that doubles as a coolant for implanted technology. This results in a blue pigmentation but is also characteristic of technological extremists whose end goal is to eventually become machines. This is in contrast with a rival group of naturalists who believe solutions can be found to any problem through the use of biology as opposed to technology who use red as their associated color. The two factions are great enemies and the main characters of the story are part of a group that mediates between the two extremes to maintain balance and make sure no one faction gets too powerful. Hence they use the coloration of both sides. This specific character underwent a procedure associated with one extreme viewpoint but still isn't fully on their side.

>>82106391
That could be cool, I hadn't considered multiple skintones. For a while I was planning on using beige casing like a shitty computer from the 90s but white may be better as it would be sort of a blank slate for the bright organic parts.

Solid advice. Thank you for your input.
Although I wonder if it's generally appliable, considering anti-climactic short stories with a focus shifted entirely on a single character or conflict, brinks of a moment, snippets of life, tend to work as well. I guess it's somewhat dependent on the genre one writes in. I can imagine a detective or horror one-shot without a climax is indeed quite boring.

>>82097027
>What dumb question
Rude.

>There's no succinct answers to [it]
Let me reframe the question then. Do any of you know good examples of one-shots or have made their own experience creating them? What are things to avoid, what are things to be careful about?
Of course I'm talking about one-shots in comparison to longer or ongoing comics. I'm not so much interested in Screenwriting 101, as more how to approach a shortstory in the comic medium.

i cant stress how important it is to learn perspective

i put it off for years out of fear
boy was i a fool. its one of THE most powerful things you can add to your drawings. the joy of creating the world around your characters at ease is probably one of the greatest joys i have experienced. drawing feels so new again and i absolutely love it.

its actually VERY EASY to learn, but instead of picking up a book i suggest watching a tutorial on youtube. its super easy to pick up on

if you guys want to make sequential art, its a must. im so glad i finally learned.
>>
>>82108354

I would've given up at the stairs, drawing backgrounds is like a endurance test to me, specially with detailed cities and even worse with post apocalyptic detailed cities.
>>
>>82108354

Author here. I'm so glad you think he's a stereotypical 90's bowlcut bully. Part of what I want to do with Wilfreda as a comic is to take a look at those stereotypes and deconstruct them a little. Is Wilfreda a witch, after all? Or is she just a little girl with a lot of imagination? Is her lemonade really magical, or just lemon-flavored tap water? And in that regard, will the "bully" hit her and prove the lemonade is fake... or ignore her and keep the mystery up?

Wait and see. At the very least, it's a rather cute cast of characters and set of situations.

>>82108021
i feel like the best aspects of the best shortform comics are how neat the pacing is, how it gets a lot done with the short amount of time it has. how on one hand you instantly get INTO their world, but on the other hand the ending is so satisfying you don't think there should be any more.
What was that one.. The Girl from Pluto? that was great.
>>
>>82108354
the problem is working it in when you have trouble wrapping your head around architecture period.
or your shots are all really close-in by necessity.
or there's nothing TO draw the perspective with.
like you have someone in a field.. the field goes on .. eh.. for a while. far enough. there are no major mountains in the background.. what do you do?
>>
>>82108923
but then you cant change the depth of field..

Ape Samurai - Long reach orangutan naginata users, bonobo monkey courtiers, snow monkey archers, gorilla tetsubo users.

I was kinda stunned at how easy it was, problem is that it's very time-consuming when you're just going ''I gotta have something here, I guess...'', but yeah, it is important to learn perspective because in the end you're going to place your characters in that world

not really, it's actually pretty damn important, problem is that people can't be neutral about it, or can't draw so you think there are muscles on the face instead of making it look all gross and boring, usually people draw more detailed faces to distinguish old age or a more extreme state of emotion

Aeons ago the lemurain sorcerers locked the Dream King away in a tomb prison located in the Valley of Spiders a hidden land in the Antartic.
Recently, (1949) a group of cultist gathered on Stoney Island near the City and through obscene ritual and sacrifice have managed ro shatter the first seal on the Dream King's prison.
as a result nobody in the entire world can go to sleep, and the giant monster Urgo, asleep since before the collision that formed the moon, has risen and slowly makes its way now to the City.
Urgo is covered with ruins, Occult investigator, sorcerer and brick, Doc Vulcan ID's these as lemurian, manages to do some research and consults an oracle (that looks like a huge pile of eyes) which he keeps in the basement of his spooky light house home. All this leads to him linking Urgo and the Dream king's seal.
The Heroes split into three groups:
The Steel Soldier and Jessy Thunder join the army and attempt to protect the city, Thronhaven from Urgo.
Miss Misty (gaseous form and chem powers) and a team of FIST agents (Federal Investigative and Strategic Taskforce) storm Stoney Isalnd and fight an army of cultists nad crab men to stop the ritual that will shatter the second seal.
Doc Vulcan, NightMan (hobo drunk Not Batman) and 176 (an android with stretching powers, origninally created by a super-villain, but turned now to the side of good) take the Triphibian a magic rocket ship to antartica and the Valley of Siders to replace the fist seal, which will put Urgo back to sleep, allow everyone to sleep and generally avert a crisis.

>Redraw
hell no. way too lazy. though i have been working harder on sketches (that is, sketching at all before going to lineart) since I joined this thread.. which has slowed things down considerably. and in this case i redrew those sketches many times to get certain parts to look right. Without that I never would have been able to do these group shots for one thing.
>look up references
What part of any of this would looking up a reference have helped? the mailbox I suppose. I winged that one hardcore, and then wasn't sure what color to make it. It ended up a weird hybrid two-door americanish mailbox but red like japanese and british ones.. But for a unique setting that's probably fine.
I doubt that's what you were referring to though.

I feel like I'm being way more 'careful' than I used to be, but that's only resulting in taking fewer risks and not varying up poses and angles as much as I used to feel freer to do (like in this one I forced myself to do one zoomed-out shot and one rear shot but I still wanted an overhead, and couldn't find a good opportunity)
as for motivation.. fuck it's an addiction at this point. and my 'routine' is drawing-any-time-i'm-not-eating-or-paying-lots-of-attention-to-tv

Hey HYW,

I've posted this side project of mine on here a couple of times, and gotten some efficent, if cold, feedback.

Now I've added color to some parts, and value to nighttime scenes.

Tell me what you think?

The coloring on the page you posted here is great, but in the actual comic it's a little flat. I'd mix up the hues and values a little more for some visual pop. And, while I like the art in general, I think you'd benefit a lot from facial studies. For a very specific tip, the velvet on the deer antlers should be much lighter than the antlers, either a white or a very light tan.

I find your writing pleasant, but I haven't seen a real story hook yet. The harrowing "kill or be killed" post-apocalyptic setting with weird mutant people is getting a little culturally tired and you'll need an additional dimension to sell it. Getting the plot rolling should be your top priority in the next couple pages to keep readers interested. Be sure to present Sisko with plenty of opportunities to showcase her sides that aren't just survival mode to endear her to the reader. A little sympathy goes a long way if done correctly.

Awesome potential. Keep it up, dude!

hello creative brothers and sisters

i want to point you all towards a great program my friend recomended to me called "Lazy Nezumi"
one of the biggest issues i ran into while working with phtoshop was the lack of fidelity in my line work
i can draw great lines with pens but when i went to replicate the same thing in photoshop, the lines always fell short
UNTIL my friend told me about lazy nezumi
it is probably one of the greatest things i have found
it will integrate itself into photoshop/manga studio and a few other programs at ease (it will open on its own once you load up photoshop)

please give it a try you guys. it has a free 30 day trial to get used to it and see if its for you or not
(and its definitely for you)

If you're not an autistic weirdo who doesn't understand basic human interaction it should come naturally to you.
>>
>>82130284
Let's suppose for a moment, in theory, that hypothetically that I have a friend like that.
>>
>>82130010
I write friendships that are nonchalantly and unapologetically intimate without sexual tension or ulterior motives (that's up to you of couse, what goes on between them outside the ''friendship''.
>giving your buddy a back massage while watching tv
>dragging a friend home safely from a bar
>picking up a friend from a side of the road when his car breaks down
>babysit her obnoxious kids
>go lingerie shopping with her
>cancel something important to be with them, even though you really wanted to do something else

Friendship for me is basically willingly doing stuff for them, that I wouldn't necessarily do to/with others if I didn't have to.

Thank you. :) Since I'm not that good at writing super complex and original stories, I at least try to pay close attention to the dialogue and characters. Maybe it's just me, but people in general don't write that good or meaningful dialogue. Whatever gets the job done and message across. That doesn't make a comic bad of course, but fun or otherwise well thought out dialogue could help to keep the reader interested through the highs and lows of the comic.

>>
>>82125633
It's a job. Don't think about "motivation." That's a myth meant for artists with wealthy patrons.

At this point I do between 3-5 whole pages a week. This week I'm aiming for 7. I probably won't make it due to outside influences (clients being slow,) but that's the goal.

On normal weeks I do my webcomic over 2 days. Intentionally. I could do it faster but that leaves time for other work. So I do pencils and inks one day, then the rest the next day. Every day.

I post 3 days a week so at that schedule I gradually build a buffer. Also some days I do do the whole page in a day if there's nothing else to do.

Now. I don't have any other job, but when I did I still worked on this schedule. I had far less other art responsibilities to take my time then though. I used to write and thumbnail at work.
>>
>>82130010
Friendships vary a lot and are often not symmetrical so I'd hesitate to give out any general rules..
I think that the key to making any relationship believable is showing the audience that both parts of the relationship have a reason for liking the other - the relationship provides them with something they want, whether on an emotional, material or other level.
Maybe they have similar politics and enjoy the feeling of validation when they complain about how everyone else in society are stupid.
Maybe they're deeply loyal to and willing to sacrifice for each other simply because they know the loyalty is reciprocated, even though they don't see eye to eye on a lot of stuff.
Maybe they cover each others' weaknesses, with both being much better at recognizing the others' mistakes than their own(one's a finance guy who helps his friend plan his loans, one's a mechanic who helps his friend not get ripped off when buying a car).
Again, this doesn't have to be symmetrical or balanced - maybe one guy likes the other because he's loaded and generous to his friends, while the other likes him back because he's always loved playing chess with him.

this is a really retarded attitude that comes up a lot here. stop trying to justify your shoddy work with "muh process".

>but I spent 20 hours doing this, there's so much hard work in it, you don't understand
No one cares because the final work doesn't reflect it. The only person in the world who will care about how hard you worked to achieve so little is you.
>>
>>82134954
if a person did work, they aren't going to listen to you tell them 'you didn't' any more than they'll listen to you in the elevator, after you farted, saying 'it was you'
you can tell them it didn't work, that's fine. that's the kind of feedback a good artist appreciates. I've listened to the fact that it didn't work for you, and i'm keeping that in mind

but dude, it's a comic. it's like bitching about the lack of shading in a tv cartoon. we're on schedules here. this isn't single-shot heavily shaded portraits here. some of us are rushing just to get out the gags, the action, the story. color was an optional upgrade in this one.
that, and a heavy amount of shading might look kinda weird on such simple models. at a certain point it's like.. do i shade where the nose would be? I put a lot of thought into making the designs as interesting as possible but still economical to draw over and over and over and over in a comic. Kaen's previous armor was solid green with black underbits, so i didn't have to worry about coloring in around them.. just some solid black. easy. then i actually did add a little shine to the green parts because part of their whole deal is their distinctive material. This new armor is all white and black so I can add a few more details but not have to spend extra time later coloring it in. a lot of thought goes into this.
It's just different thought from the thought you put into your comic, which I'm sure is a lot better in your eyes. Because we're all different, man. and we're all working to please ourselves, first and foremost.

You're definitely struggling with anatomy, particularly if the pose is more advanced than "standing there". The color schemes are fine on their own but if you're consistently working in flats you could still add a greater range of values.

I understand that you just want to shoot these out on schedule, sticking to that is admirable, but you're in denial about the quality of your work relative to the effort put in. I opened it up and it immediately struck me as middle school quality. I got flashbacks to old comics in the Neopets newspaper. I know they're cartoony and you're rushing them out, but take a brief moment to study how people actually look in certain poses the next time you attempt to draw them.
>>

that's not anatomy, that's perspective. and you're right, i struggle with that haaardcore. In this case this scene gave me fits, and i worked really carefully on working out each part and drawing it in separately in a more multi-plane way than I usually do.
It wasn't perfect, but i literally could not have done the scene otherwise. my old way of doing it would have been characters first, then trying to wedge the box of underwear in between them.
(i actually noticed the bad perspective on the underwear box but by that point it would have been a nightmare to fix)
aaaand yeah Washi's arms are.. going fucking crazy in that shot. I was trying to do something more interesting and dynamic than just 'sitting there' and it didnt quite work. looked better in the sketch
but that whole inability-to-draw-any-pose-more-advanced-than-standing-there WAS very true for a long time, I have become really aware of that, and I thought I'd done a pretty decent job of moving past that, despite a few slipups. No? I guess I'll keep studying poses. Actually if you have any specific resources for that, I'd appreciate it, because I don't see those very often. I've had to figure out for myself 'what a hand on hip pose looks like' and shit.
probably doesn't help that I spend zero time around real people, and never observe them when I do
>values
ehhh... hmm. A lot of that is that colors don't look the same as they used to, to me. I had bad cataracts for a while. That's why everyone's so fucking pale. pic related is something from 14-ish years ago, which I later thought was 'wrong'. Different monitors don't help either. I wholeheartedly disagree. dewd's backgrounds are regularly neon and horrid, lots of ugly browns and weird oranges that really clash with the characters..
but this is desaturated blue in two shades. it lets the characters pop nicely. then there's a nice desaturated green house and a beige car. in terms of color and clashing, these are some of his best backgrounds.
it's not exactly hard to find things to criticize about this comic (as you mentioned, uneven lines, bad perspective), so it's weird to choose the one thing that's working.

Let's sum up the core problem.

DEWD DOES NOT TRY.

To learn, to apply, to do anything.

Outside of cataract issues, you've put girl-in-blue, martian girl and redhead guy on a background that's the exact same shade of blue as the one used in their costumes. That's not a good idea when you don't have any shading and tiny thin lines.

This is true, it happens kinda often.. because inevitably people are going to be in front of water, or in front of a dark sky or something.. sometimes I give them a little light outline to make it stand out.
of particular stupidity was giving mizu a costume of 3 shades of blue when she has learned hydrokinesis. I had to change the color of the water like 9 times in pic related's 5th panel, so it wouldnt blend in with her OR the sky. (and in the end the enemies are still kind of just.. floating in front of the water)

so what do you suggest? I can't just suddenly decide water isn't the color I already established it is.. right?
oh, are you saying thicker lines and shading fix that? balls. double balls. maybe i'll have to do that, at least in those cases.
>>
>>82135732
>14-ish years ago
I hate to break it to you, but if you said you drew that last year I'd think that seemed about right. Your posing/anatomy is decent in specific instances, especially where your characters show more skin, but on the whole it looks very minimal effort, especially paired with these faces. Maybe your anatomical problem is more about how clothes hang off the body? Study that a bit. And I'm pretty sure you don't need me to tell you this, but... feet. How they look in perspective, how they connect to the body, and how they are able to bend. I know they're hard, it's just a particularly noticeable issue.

And my anatomical reference pool is minimal as well, I'm afraid. Google images usually suffices for the basics.
>>
>>82136469
(and I mean, it's not the EXACT same shade. to me those colors are supremely different, but i've got pretty good shade-sense (i can distinguish between tiny differences in their skin tones, or the different bright reds, or miniscule differences in the green-blue-purple area of the spectrum). just terrible value-sense. Buut yeah they do blend in really badly with the water, you're right)

minimal effort is right! but I want to put in the effort it requires to make minimal effort look good, so Ima work on that.
>clothes hanging
very true. I actually chose more loose clothing in their most recent costume iteration specifically to give me more play with that, and I've been trying.. because in the past it all seemed to be tanktops and bunchy pants and all pretty simple shit. In particular Kimchi's loose changshan was really fun to draw for a while, then I guess I just got lazy
>Feet
shit I thought i was doing a great job with those. Especially given how I was drawing then as ocarina-of-time teardrop-blobs-with-lines-drawn-on-for-toes for so many years. I've got the heels drawn all round and everything, no more flat-ass right-angle lego feet like I was doing before.. no? ookay, back to studying those I guess.
>faces
well that one panel was fucking TINY so that's part of it. I know I need to blow my canvas up a bit, and I promise I will in the next iteration of the comic. But this one's already been bumped from 1400 to 1800 wide. It makes me feel really comfortable.. even though faces do look a lot better in a larger canvas.. doing it on a tiny one feels like pixel art. like i'm really in control. And in the cases of those ones you circled it literally was pixel art. It looks different on a bigger canvas...
you keep zeroing in on the particular instances where I felt like 'fuck this one isnt working as well as the others' about though. I wanna be like "yeah but, most of the time, that looks a lot better!" but that's not a good thing to say is it.
>>
>>82136469
>I can't just suddenly decide water isn't the color I already established it is.. right?
Sure you can. Water has barely any intrinsic color to it anyway - the depth, the angle of view, the presence of particulates floating in the water, all have a much bigger impact on the color. If you're in a real pinch, just put the reflection of a cloud, or sea foam, or the sun being caught by a wave behind the problem area.

>are you saying thicker lines and shading fix that?
They could. The basic problem is that when you separate areas of dark blue with a thin black outline, there's not much value difference. With shading, you can use the different values on the object to suggest the form, and thicker lines make the black more obvious. Or you could just use lighter more pastel shades for the water in the background - even if those same shades are present in the characters, the black outlines will separate them much better than the darker shades (notice Mizu's arms against the sky of page you just posted versus the darker blue of Martian girl against the ocean in panel 2). Or you could experiment with using brighter outlines for darker colors.
>>
>>82135435
If this page is getting significantly less hits compared to previous pages, it's probably to do with the previous pages. People have to read a page before they can think it's bad and go "well, I won't check this out again".
>>
I had a webcomic idea going but the artist disappeared. Where are you, Jim?
>>
>>82137210
oooh I like those ideas
yeah sometimes I forget angle changes shit. I have way too much natural autocorrect in my brain. that actually makes me happy, i was sick of autistically looking up previous comics and trying to carefully match everything to the right time of day and whatnot
>put a cloud behind it
I do that sometimes for sky stuff. I'm glad that's allowed, i felt guilty about it. used to do it a lot when Ribbon the fairy was around because, having no outlines, she blended in with everygoddamnthing.

yeah yeah i'm gonna experiment with colored outlines smore.. I briefly dabbled in it, because they can have some neat effects (for example I give mercury people a blue outline and it makes them look a little more translucent. same with skin or wax or cookie dough.)
oh and she's half mercurian half human! martians are green! in fact i maaaay just include a martian in the comic sometime soon.. sshh

this is really good shit i'm getting today. reallly good shit. i'm getting my learn on. now just be patient with me while i integrate it.

The speech-balloons are still very much the Default Photoshop Ellipse, which limits what you can do with the text itself. Study how to make use of vector path tools to make custom balloon shapes that fit the text better. Otherwise you're trying to make the text fit into the balloon, rather than making the balloon fit around the text.

I make my balloons with four control points at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock, and adjust the handles until I get a shape somewhere between a rectangle and an ellipse.

sure would like to see some more stability in things like SD's head (he's kinda smearing all over the place) and like, the store's sign having straight lines. hey does the tool you're using let you just like, hold shift and draw a line and it makes it straight? not that you should do that, but you can then trace over that line to make it straight and natural. just an idea.

>holy shit dem cloaks. dem cloaks. how do you even. that hair texture is amazing.
It's actually pretty simple - I just use a brush like you'd use for inking lineart with the opacity reduced by half to draw messy clumps of midtone on the base color, then pick out a few highlights and deeper shadows with the same brush. I use a multiply layer on top of that to add more shadow and ambient occlusion without having to redo the texture, which I've moved to the side and turned into a normal layer to illustrate here.

Unless you're talking about getting cloaks to drape good in which case, well, find a big towel, a clothes pin, and a mirror.

>>82140506
I was actually thinking something as subtle as five-ten degrees, but this works just fine. Adds a nice rhythm to the sequence.

To what degree is it okay to use common fantasy terms in your own setting?

For example, I want to explain how magic works in a setting. It's powered by an invisible, intangible force that flows around everything in the universe and magic users channel it to cast spells. Can I call it mana? Or is that too much of a low hanging fruit?
>>
>>82143169
Mana is fine. It's a term people recognize and you don't have to explain anything to them. Or you could use MP, or possible something like æther.
>>
>>82143169
Depends on what tone you're going for. You're clearly bothered by the idea of using a common term for it, so you should probably take it another direction since you're going to be defining it again anyway.

The benefits of using a low-hanging fruit like "mana" are immediate recognizability and sparing yourself the trouble of coming up with something new, but if you fill the series with low-hanging fruit like that it'll just blend in with every other fantasy story everyone's ever read, unless if the story/characters REALLY shine.
>>
what's wrong with making a comic for fun? why does it have to be to some random anons standard of quality?
>>
>>82143169
Well, it's not insta-dropped, and I don't really mind having common fantasy terms like "elves", but stuff like "mana" will make me consider the setting a fantasy RPG reference rather than a more serious self-contained thing (unless Melanesian influences are common enough that mana in its original non-RPG sense wouldn't seem out of place).
Like, if the people of the setting have mana, it makes me feel like they also have hp and like, stats and skill points.

I'd never do it in an original fantasy story of my own. For something like what you're describing, I think I'd go with something generic like "ley energies" or make up my own thing that's based on the specifics of the magic system (like, if magic is mortals mimicking the primus-motor "effect without cause" power of the gods, I'd call it something like "echoes of creation" or "echoes" for short).

>>82143701
If you just want to make a comic for fun, feel free. But if you post it here, people will tell you how they feel about it.
>>
>>82143048
>There are two people in these threads that you shouldn't talk about.
Bones and..?

>>82143169
mana is totally okay
but when in doubt, just look for the root word of something and then choose a different language's word for that same word, or a different word deriving from that same root

when it comes to tracing, should you always state that you've done it, or only admit it if asked?

(basically asking between two types of honesty; being completely upfront but possibly making yourself look bad when half the page is citations of references on small things, or being less upfront but still completely honest if anyone asks if you've done it with the advantage you don't spend more time compiling citations than anything else.)
>>
>>82148913
There's nothing inherently wrong with tracing. Tracing can be a very valuable learning tool. However, obviously, tracing can lead to bad habits and even worse, you could start tracing in your comic, so you need to manage it well.

Most artists have traced at some point in their careers.

I'm totally fine with tracing as long as the art looks good anf the artist is open about it, and doesn't claim to be this artist master mind. I hate those ugly digital mannequins, though, and in the recent years more and more artists have started using them. That's why I'd suggest and appreciate if you took your own reference pictures.

I'm finding it kinda difficult to write a robot. My whole series is about robots, actually. But this one bot in particular is the only one that is true neutral and does only what she's told to do. She has likes, dislikes and an over all personality, but how she reacts to things is almost always the same. I.e. Someone hugging her and someone kicking her would warrant the same dead stare. I feel comfortable writing her and she's honestly my favorite, but I feel like the audience is going to read things she says and question why she's even a main character or a character at all. You would relate her to a 'Kuudere', if you're a Weeaboo. Would she still be interesting to read about or would she make you bored? Also, if anyone knows any characters that are neutral and still interesting, please let me know.

Paprika Peppers and her friend Cashew Tʂuman (not shown) are two tweens who do drugs and gets stuck in a video game. Paprika Peppers, the 2nd main protagonist is a trans-african (redbone) demigirl polyamorous lesbiansexual.
The comic starts after she activates a robot to database the comic's events using multiple "eyes" located within their universe.

Make a boring, basic plot that's been done to death, add flavors of the week characters, appeal to horny teenagers, then open a patreon.
Don't make it interesting, if you do that, people might actually spend more time reading your comic than talking about how much they hate it on reddit, tumblr, or 4chan, spreading how many people know of the comic and therefore giving you more ad rev due to people going on your site to see what's the big fuss.

>>82143169
>Intangible force that flows around everything
Call it "The Weave and the Way." Individuals can eave a spell and influence the reality around them a little bit, but never can they cut the threads---therein lies playing with Fate, something man cannot do without risking their own place in the way. It weaves through reality, but goes only one way forward.

Also lets you use stuff like Fate Hags and Norns.

Mana/Magic itself are overplayed, and it only gets worse when you try to box'em up. Play to a unified theme and you ought to be fine, bruv.

>>82143701
It doesn't have to be up to someone's quality standards, but much like anything you put out there; it will be judged. Bad Adjectives wasn't exactly great art, but it was consistently funny. When people in this thread rip someone apart for bad art; it isn't just the art that is the problem. And people are posting here, hopefully, to get better.

There's plenty of inferior products out there, so creating another one for fun isn't really "wrong" but posting it here and expecting it to be cherished when it isn't fulfilling the potential it could is strange. I see this thread less as a place for blind praise and more for getting a gauge of what needs working on and what people like.

It is better to cite your sources and be seen as potentially unskilled, than to not cite your sources and be seen as a thief. That's how it goes in academia, that's how it ought to go in art. You'd get worse looks if people called you a cheat.

i certainly find it boring when a videogamey setting overboxes magical things, pins them down and makes them mundane, BUT when you find the little links in different mythologies that tie them together, it can actually be fun to take a scientific attitude towards it. In particular I love working out the apparent electromagnetic nature of mana and chi, the way they're related to things like iron and the poles of the earth, and of a human body and the fluids running through it. it makes you wonder how scientific nomenclature might have changed if the solid realities of magnetic fields had been discovered earlier, contemporary with the myths

Its funny you should mention the tapestry/woodblock thing, I'm drawing a lot of imagery and story structure from Finnish folklore, most notably the kalevala. The tapestry thing might seem odd to most people, but all my Finnish friends freak out because its pretty heavily inspired by their old culture of forest dwelling badasses. Same thing for the knife, for a while Finland had roaming knife-fighting gangs since there was no law up near the arctic circle, kind of a wild west situation. There's going to be more references to that section of Finnish history in the second chapter, most notably how the "government" would trade huge chunks of land/resources for things like bags of rice and grains to starving rural people.

The less you acknowledge attacks on your character and the more you involve yourself with other things, the less people are likely to see these accusations as valid and the more the ire shiftfs to the trolls. You'll never be without detractors, but fighting the perception continuously just creates more.

Anyway, black haired girl is a selkie, right? Somehow it seems kind of weird for a selkie to have pointed ears - though by the logic of the setting, I guess her and Gwyn are just different tribes of the same species, and by the logic of historical folklore, I don't think tuatha de danaan-style faeries should really have 'em either.
Heck, when did elves and faeries get associated with pointy ears anyway? I'd guess it probably started out as some kind of animalistic trait like cloven hooves or horns to suggest ties with uncivilized heathen beliefs, but I honestly don't know.

hey if someone were to happen to do a little homage-but-not-actually-a-cameo to your comic as a gag at the end of the one they might happen to currently be working on, and happens to depict fairies in the zelda 'glowing ball with wings' style, what color of glowing ball and what color wings do you suppose Gwyn would have?

also i'll be needing a good shot of sir richard's sword, but i think i can just go archive binge for that.

i wonder that too. it seems to just kind of appear in some art but not have a historical basis. i personally fucking love it because it lets you make them look subtly in human but in a totally raceless way.
then again in my setting humans sometimes get their ears pointed as a rebellious teen fashion, so it's not the dead giveaway it could be.

The people trying to break the fight up, are the only ones who don't have a clue what they're doing. The only ones who don't understand cause and effect, how delaying problems delays solutions.

Let fighters fight and it'll be over quicker than you think. But you never do. "Stop it!! Both of you! I swear, I am the only adult here." Tell me you've never experienced someone doing that. Haven't you been more sick of them, than the person you were quarreling with?

or just when they do a bad job of it
which is one thing we don't get in these threads. among other things, dumb adults who stupidly broke up your quarrels as children were the kind who went on to revise musical chairs so you never take a chair away. they were creepily anti-conflict fucking Buddy Bears faggots.
trying to preserve a large social group by not letting one person's medication withdrawal derail it is a correct thing to do. we love you, man. we just want you to get better.

That's not a derail, that was a question. A relevant one to any working class of people.

They're not even trying to break up fights, they're telling YOU to stop responding to shit bait because YOU keep acting like a stupid child.

You're being the kid who has to keep explaining that he didn't cheat on the test every time a bully teases him and refuses to listen when he's told to just let it go. He's too retarded to understand he's just prolonging it and other kids keep trying to tell him to stop doing it. He thinks the others don't understand, but they don't fucking care if he cheated or not anymore, they just want him to shut up about it.

>heck, when did elves and faeries get associated with pointy ears anyway? I'd guess it probably started out as some kind of animalistic trait like cloven hooves or horns to suggest ties with uncivilized heathen beliefs, but I honestly don't know.

From what I know, it was actually Tolkien the first to have elves looks like "attractive humans BUT with pointy ears". Granted, I'm sure I've seen art with pointy-eared satyrs and whatnot from the Renaissance, but not elves/fairies specifically afaik; for the most part fairies were either described as looking like beautiful humans (like the Tuatha de Danaan) or deformed in a variety of different ways
Early 20h century artists like Arthur Rackham had pointy-eared elves-fairies as well, but those also looked more goblin-like along with the pointy ears. At the very least I know the bug wings were a Victorian thing.

>Somehow it seems kind of weird for a selkie to have pointed ears

I GET, where you're coming from (originally, I was going to leave her with no ears instead, like a seal), but I thought long ears would be the most efficient fay for someone looking at the page to identify she was fairy, the other being green or red eyes while every human past the prologue has had blue eyes.

And yeah, her and Gwyn are from two different tribes. Gwyn's is based specifically on the welsh Tylwyth Teg (which I remember reading are actually MOST visible at night; but really I like the out-worldy look), while she's a Selkie.

Ticket to Ride is fun, though. Not my favorite board game, but good when you don't want something TOO strategic

>the way you do speech bubbles differently for different races

I actually really enjoy the lettering portion partially because of it. It also makes longer back&forths easy to follow when the characters have a different speech bubble

So in fae terms, does that make them as different as humans and fair folk, or just Welsh people and Irish people? Like, could Gwyn learn to do the seal-skin trick if she asked?

Yes, I remember the thread where you ignored all the anons kind enough to redline your work, made continuous excuses of increasingly poor quality, and ignored any reply chain that reached a point you couldn't refute.

Oh man, that's exiting; the color depends... My immediate thought is white because that's the color of her court, but perhaps with a hint of yellow from her fair as opposed to Navi's blue. If she had wings, I feel she'd like em pink...
Also, I don't have a drawing of the sword specifically, but it's based on a LaTene celtic short sword with a modified hilt

Nununununonono.

I gave up right around the time where someone said "Are those legs long on purpose?" Where I then said "Yes they are, you get different poses that way" and posted a pic of girls with extremely long legs. Because after that it was this clusterfuck of people mocking the "MUH STYLE" argument, and so many different replies at once, I would've spent all day replying to all of them.

Obviously I would've loved to respond to individual people, but the sheer rabble made it IMPOSSIBLE. "That guy was someone else, we're on a different reply chain now" I'm so tired of that happening. I don't like not knowing who I'm speaking to. I don't need to know their intimate-ass identity, I just want to know WHICH GUY IS WHICH.

You don't see the issue of living your life like an open wound?

>You are impossible to have an actual, critical rapport with.
You're only saying this because you've ONLY dealt with me in public. I hate these formats where you can't just shut a door every once in awhile.

Stop saying I don't deal with criticism, until you've done it in private. Alright? That's my only condition here. After you've contacted me in private, you can make whatever determination you fucking want.

>So in fae terms, does that make them as different as humans and fair folk, or just Welsh people and Irish people? Like, could Gwyn learn to do the seal-skin trick if she asked?

The latter in my setting. Fair Folks all come from a single tribe than then separated into multiple tribes as they went their own way.
Magic is more like a craft, same way a Celt smith could learn how to make a Roman sword, nothing prevents Gwyn from creating magic artifacts from other tribes or learning other spells.
Each fairy tribe just learned how to escape/camuflage from human their own way (becoming small, turning into seals, going underwater). But I'm treating magic like a skill or craft rather than an ability they are born with

Yes this post is a troll and I should never reply to trolls bluhbluhbluh but

One of my big criticisms with tumblr was how anti-communication it was.

The message system they implemented was a HUGE step up.

I do wish you could set every post to be replied to with their built in reply doodle. You could enable Disqus for awhile, but no one used that shit, or noticed you were using it.

She did have that yellow fringe on her dress in the first chapter.
Speaking of, I was thinking it wouldn't make sense to completely copy any one of Rich and Gwyn's outfits for the link on my site since they actually change their clothes now and then in the comic, so how're these two? Probably make Gwyn's dress a little shorter.

>>82169270
Oh, that's neat. So that includes the pixies from chapter two and the fish guys of the current chapter, right?
What about supernatural critters from other parts of the world? Human sorcerors?
