Not really.
I think art styles should be judged by how they serve the story they're trying to tell (like, what expressions can the faces make well, how does the presentation of space affect the feeling of place, does it let the comic update at a good pace), rather than any of their qualities being good or bad in and of themselves.

She did have that yellow fringe on her dress in the first chapter.
Speaking of, I was thinking it wouldn't make sense to completely copy any one of Rich and Gwyn's outfits for the link on my site since they actually change their clothes now and then in the comic, so how're these two? Probably make Gwyn's dress a little shorter.

How d'you mean? Like, that seelie and unseelie are distinct types of creature?
Because I can think of at least one mythology, Norse, where the tribes were basically defined by politics rather than any inherent quality. Asa-god, Vana-god, and giant were basically the same kind of creature, just more or less civilized and more or less fond of humans.
IIRC the original Celtic stuff was similar.

There wasn't really anything like a medieval period in America.
Still, pre-Columbian America is a neat setting for a fantasy adventure. Something based around the heroic hunter archetype rather than the knight errant, maybe?

Still, I don't really see where >>82170953
is coming from. There's like, three comics in these threads set in a medieval europe-ish setting, and they're all very different (and actually made by Eurofags, IIRC).

>Speaking of, I was thinking it wouldn't make sense to completely copy any one of Rich and Gwyn's outfits for the link on my site since they actually change their clothes now and then in the comic, so how're these two?

I love 'em!
Thanks a lot dude; and yeah, each arc has one or even two different outfits for the duo; the ony thing that remain consistent are the color schemes.

>Oh, that's neat. So that includes the pixies from chapter two and the fish guys of the current chapter, right?
>What about supernatural critters from other parts of the world? Human sorcerors?

I have actually been thinking a lot about it lately as I'm getting close to writing the next arc; each arc is based on a different mythology, but there must be a common lore that unifies them for them to be able to co-exist in the same world (For example, tales of British Fairies or Scandinavian Trolls are quite similar; ergo I don't think it should be impossible for Gwyn to learn spells from other races)

Since I'm going down the line of "magic is a craft", I'm making so that in my setting it is usable by ANY race; BUT some might have more affinity for it than others. For example, a human witch can turn people into animals, a human druid can lift and place a standing stone... but humans don't have as much affinity for it, they need to spend years upon years studying and breaking it down to rituals and sacrifices in order to understand it's working whereas it'll come more naturally to fairies (who, being immortal, also have time to learn more spells) and even morose to, say, a Djinn

Fairies just tend to be rather weak in this setting because of iron; It can kill them permanently and their magic can't hurt someone wearing it, which is why most tribes focus on learning spells which allow them to escape from humans (kinda how large prehistoric animals evolved into smaller species able to better escape hunters)

Actually now that I think about it, I guess if you made a comic about the vikings settlement in Greenland and Canada, that would count as medieval and American.
Probably not what shitpost-chan was thinking of, but hey.

>>82172405
Eh, doesn't hurt to be a little charitable.

>>82172466
That could be pretty cool, yeah.
Classic plains Indians would be a hard fit, but the empires of south and Central America would mesh pretty well with feudalism - add iron and horses or some other riding beast (oversized tapirs? deer?), and you could have knights, no problem.
Maybe the northern tribes could have a type of dog-sled knights, mounted archers like Samurai (polar bear knights are probably a bit overkill).

Leif Erikson's adventures in America with fantasy elements of Native American vs Norse mythology? I'm down for that.
Seriously though, a fantasy comic based on the Incas would be the tits. Though the main reason I'd consider making webcomics my fulltime job would be do that I could have time to also make stories about less Euro-centric folklore. My major arcs are based on Celtic (past halfway through now), Norse, Magyar, and Islamic folklore

>Fairies just tend to be rather weak in this setting because of iron;
Is that just in the British-type areas or is this all supernatural stuff everywhere?
It would seem kind of strange for things like djinns and trolls to be averse to iron, but on the other hand, it would make it easier to understand how they don't rule over humans everywhere.
If they have a common source, maybe the fairies of fantasy-Britain (or their grand progenitor) got themselves cursed to be weak to iron, way back in the mists of history.

For now in my mind, just British-type fairies.
Iron being an anti-magic element would explain why humans are the dominant race across the globe despite being no good at magic, which is why I considered it.
BUT, on the other hand, as I'll read about Scandinavian or Hungarian folklore I'm sure I'll find out how they "protected" themselves against their respective folklore creatures.
For a Hungarian (or general Eastern European) example, Vampires are magic undead creatures able of hypnosis and shapeshifting, BUT their weaknesses include sunlight, garlic, and not being able to enter a house unless invited; I don't need to add Iron to the list in order to explain why my version of "Fantasy Eastern Europe" isn't ruled by vampires. I'm sure Scandinavians had their own protections against elf or troll magic.

Question: how do you guys feel about using 3D software to set up background guides?

I'm not good with backgrounds in general, and I have a lot of problems when it comes to perspectives. While I know that the best answer to my problem is "practice, practice, practice!", I've found a solution by designing basic backgrounds on POV-Ray and then using the renders as guides for the final panel.

Do you think this is "cheating"? Do re-drawing the backgrounds using 3D guides count as "practicing"? I know they do count as practicing with my 3D software, though.

Pic very related. That's an example I've used on one of my webcomics.

Opinions?

No, there's no such thing. At the end of the day, it's what matters at the end of your life.

If you need this to save time and come out iwth an amazing product, then do it. But how fast is this setup process? How long does it take to construct/render that background in 3D?

At some point I feel just learning composition yourself would be faster in the long run.

>>82173950
Yes, I know. That's why I didn't say the entire page is retarded, just that one panel where he begins to write google
>>
>>82172779
Top-down views don't give a lot of clarity, IMO - it's not an angle people are used to seeing things from, so it takes a while to decipher. It doesn't help that the field of view is super narrow, flattening everything. Like, how tall is that grey line across the stream? Is it a wall? A short fence? I honestly can't tell.
Flipping around the direction the character is going between panels can feel pretty jarring.
The perspective in the second panel is ambitious, but you've kinda messed it up - for a wide-angle lens effect like that, the trick is to use curved lines for any vanishing point that isn't straight ahead of the camera, but the trees aren't curving at all.

>>82173730
IIRC Trolls were mostly driven away by the sound of Christian church bells up here. Before Christianity, I think the idea was that trolls and giants wouldn't mess with people who were in Thor's good graces because he'd wreck their shit if they tried anything.

>>82173818
There' not really any such thing as cheating when it comes to art - only end results that look good and end results that look bad.
>>
>>82173528
Maybe you're thinking of Google Chrome, because my version of Internet Explorer has no default search bar (I may have disabled/removed it years back though)?

>>82173818
I don't think it's cheating if it helps you make better art. And surely this is helping you practise perspective in a roundabout way?

If you haven't already, you can read The Witcher. It's basically a polish professional monster slayer who is hired because of his encyclopedic knowledge of monsters to slay them or run them off (silver is the anti-magic element there). The creatures mentioned in the books are all authentic middle age folklores, and some are extremely obscure like the endrega

Thank you all for the replies. As for the time it takes, it really depends on what I am using the most. The example in the original pic (the karaoke stage) was used only once or twice, but another background (a kitchen with counters and oven) was used A LOT of times.

In this second case, it was way better to take a bit of time to design the basic shapes (mostly boxes) and then use the same background in different angles for different pages of the webcomic, so in the long run I'm saving a lot of time.

Take a look at the new pic. It's a quick compilation of the backgrounds I've made in 3D. I currently have a kitchen, a dining room, a bedroom, and a back alley (plus the karaoke stage) all ready in basic POV-Ray shapes, so I can use them quite fast, and they definitely helped me to speed up some panels, as well as keeping a proper perspective.

>>
>>82176725
I like the middle top one the best.
>>
>>82174084
Yeah, "Christian Bells" tend to a popular one for MANY creatures from pagan folklore, and like >>82175437 mentions, silver I know is a popular one at least for some Eastern European monsters (in Celtic myth, Silver is a metal I feel is to an extent associated with fairies; the Kelpie has silver bridle that allows it to shapeshift to a humanoid and, a king of the Tuatha Dé Danann had a silver hand). I've read that iron is also a weakness to some Scandinavian creatures as well.

The trickier ones to adapt into a unified fantasy world would be those like the Jötunn or Djinn for which the reason why they don't take over the Norse or Muslim world is directly because divine prevention; for those I'll have to think about the lore a bit more so that there's a reason why humans are still the Mustard Race.

>>82174603
Ha, for what it's worth I liked the games. Really I don't know MUCH of East European folklore; so that's the arc for which I'll probably find some of the weirdest stuff. Like, there's a Hungarian warewolf (I forget the name) that can revive as a Vampire if not killed in a proper manner

Well, for the jötunn, I don't think the ones that are on a divine scale of power have any real interest in taking over anything in the human world, or interacting with humans in any real fashion. They're more like natural disasters than anything else.
Like, if you run into the world serpent when you're out sailing, its wake might capsize your ship, but it's not like it's gonna come by your house and eat you - you're tiny and you don't taste all that good. They live in inhospitable places where humans don't go, and they like living there just fine, thank you very much. Lesser monsters like trolls and dragons/linnorms and the undead/draugr are super dangerous but can still be taken out by a sufficiently heroic warrior, like a Beowulf or Sigurd or Ragnar Lothbrok, so civilization could very well drive those into the fringes.

On the less antagonistic side, you've got the smaller spirits that are worth sacrificing to, like "vættir" local minor gods of the landscape, house gods like the nisse/tomte, the ancestral spirits of the family and the elves (all three of which might well be the same thing). Maybe keeping these guys happy with gifts/sacrifices is how you keep bad spirits from your doorstep?
I don't think pre-Christian Norse would've considered solving conflicts with these creatures in any way except getting back on their good side with sacrifices, but in the nineteenth century people apparently carved pentagrams called "elf crosses" into their houses and wore silver talismans with crosses on them around their necks to avoid elf curses. For something more viking-ish, I think rune staves placed under doors and runic inscriptions in doorframes might be more appropriate, or maybe something based on your Eight Gods.

It hasn't really reached that far in the story for me to judge it.

I kinda like the detailing on the characters and the shading on them aren't bad.

But your backgrounds are an obvious issue. They're kinda distracting in how much you have in terms of shots but yet so little in terms of detail and weight variation.

This page is a good example -- save for the shrubs (barely) everything looks flat and lacks the depth to indicate that this taking place in a three-dimensional environment. I'm also not really big on that night haze effect -- I'm guessing you're drawing an aurora in the sky but it gets a bit confusing with how flat the backgrounds are, especially with the moon also there.

It's not necessarily a bad thing to have minimal backgrounds in a comic depending on its genre but you're obviously aiming for a fantasy/post-apocalyptic themed one, and that's a genre where people are going to want to know what this fantastic world looks like. It's why so many fantasy-themed videogames and books have official artbooks. Your mediocre backgrounds are going to be obviously noticeable in this genre, especially since you've put so much detail and shading on the characters themselves.

Your text quality is also a big issue. I'm not sure what you're doing to make it show so many artifacts but it makes reminds me of reading manga scans online, which isn't a good thing in this context. I don't know much about text and speech bubbles but I'm sure one of the thread's comic creators can tell you about that -- EtMotL is one I can remember saying something specific about that.

Hope that helps in some way.

You need to work on how to "direct" your panels, dude. I mean, first panel we get this ugly top down view of a scene, which I thought was supposed to be a stablishing shot, but this is page 2, right? What is the intention of this shot, was it supposed to look cool?
But ok, the information we get from it is that our hero is walking somewhere to the right, he is going "forward".
Then on the second panel he is going to the left, going back to where he came from. I mean, I don't think that was your intention, but that's what happens when you break the 180º rule (google this shit).

I'd suggest you be more economic with your panels. You took an entire page with two gigantic panels of a guy walking to god knows where, and it added nothing to the story. Also look into how people direct movie shots, it's basically the same principles of composing a panel and chosing what to focus on, what to show on panel and what to skip. What some videos from Every frame a painting and Now you see it on youtube. Also read Making comics and Understanding comics from Scott McCloud.
Annnnd also your drawings are kinda bad, but I guess that is more of a work for /ic/.

Here's this week's Wilfreda comic. I've shown the WIP of these panels in a previous thread.

Background info: Wilfreda (the girl in black) was selling "magical lemonade" at school, which supposedly can give you special powers. Victor (the boy on the right, on the first panel) is extremely skeptical on the whole deal.
>>
>>82187323
Yeah, there's 2-3 I actually ended up following pretty regularly. It's actually not a bad way to get some initial viewership.

I actually tend to think it's funnier when the disguise is so bad everyone the whole readership can tell who it is but the villains somehow can't

Hey, >>82172779 here again, Thanks for the input! I know my art is a bit lacking in many areas, I'm a sculptor/welder/draftsman by trade, drawing is just a side hobby of mine and Ive always wanted to give comic art a try... But! I took some of your suggestions and critiques and made some adjustments. I'm planning on having someone who actually knows how to deal with colors in photoshop (my wife iirc) to help make the colors a bit more appeasing to the eye (These are also my first attempt at watercolors so their shitty-ness is partially expected). I changed around some panel work and made more of the pages into the continuous scroll format I was using on some pages. Like >>82187101 said, my panels are big without much information, and clicking next is a waste if there not much information page-by-page. Does this flow any better?

>>
>>82195185
Yes, I haven't been updating (AT ALL) or trying to advertise (AT ALL), and all I've been focusing on is improving my art and expanding my following by drawing fanart, without ever linking them to my comic. Even when I was updating, it was never a typical update format. Y'know, beats? Never been ideal for a constant flux of viewers to have a story meant to be read in batches. All these things will certainly hurt your daily traffic.

And it's been working, I should mention.

My low readership is none of anyone's business. They have access to my project wonderful numbers, but I never made a personal promise that those numbers meant anything.

The plan is not simple. Everyone, literally everyone, has to figure out something different to make it work. But there's no finite number of people who can make it work.

Only an asshole would argue with that last part.

This might even be contradictory. It's very frustrating.
>>
>>82189203
where are you getting your textures from?
>>
>>82197741
Story first. This is the only correct order, you can do it backwards but it will result in an inferior work.

When you create a story first, you have something to build the world on. Every element down to the tiniest detail can reflect the theme you've chosen and results in a cohesive aesthetic. It's not a totally strict order since introducing stuff simultaneously increases the clarity and complexity of your story, but seriousy start with the story.
>>
>>82197741
>Is it a bad sign if I have to spend many hours to try and find my antagonist's motivation?
Well, it doesn't have to be a reasonable one, but you should definitely work at it until your antagonist has a motivation that explains his actions.

You might as well just make it a slideshow mate. Paneling informs the story, it allows you to show time in a way that only graphic art can do. It's excellent for action, and just for pure artistry. You're drawing a children's style picture book that uses speech bubbles instead of having prose written at the bottom of the page. There's nothing wrong with that, I'm just saying that many people prefer the other way.
You are an extremely talented artist though, I love your creatures and scenery so much!

Wouldn't go that far. Most children's books have the prose describe what's happening in the image - Scribs lets the images do a lot of the storytelling.

If you really want to experiment and improve your art, it would stand to reason that you'd exit your comfort zone, try new styles and techniques, and brush up on your understanding of anatomy (especially in Scribble's case, his understanding of the human body could use work).

Different styles of shading and coloring, experimenting with new methods of conveying lighting, playing around with color coordination, messing with line thickness, trying new body types, finding new poses, playing with camera angles and trying to understand new textures, maybe even giving a shot at another artist's style. There's plenty to do that's more productive for refining your art than drawing characters in your same old style with the same color pallet and methods doing the same kinds of things.

Like, Ruto and Medli look like all of Scribble's other girls. Their basic designs are already pretty far from his style, and trying to find a middle ground could be a cool experiment. If he wants to draw things like this just to improve his skills, there's better ways to go about it than drawing Chaos in Hyrule.

>>82204091
His neck seems overly long, his ear looks too large for his head size, if he's hiding from foes who have done that to him there should maybe be more of them in the background, and his shield seems like it should be rotated 90 degrees so that when he's using it in a shield function with his arm across his chest the top is pointing to the ground.

>>82204091
There's nothing WRONG with it. It's a decent, if not terribly interesting, picture of a Final Fantasy character with a pretty nice background.

I just think that if you're trying to improve yourself you'd be better off branching out and being experimental.
>>
>>82204091
Use your colors better.
If you're going to make all of the background a blur of similar greens, you want to keep your color usage on foreground objects similarly understated. Ramza (that's Ramza right?) here is so many colors that be doesn't feel like he belongs in the same picture.

AW YIS YOUR BACK.
>>
>>82204440
How is it different?
That's a legitimate question.

It looks like you drew someone else's character design in your normal style with your standard proportions and construction leaning up against a tree. The coloring and construction seem the same as in your comic, so what's so different?

Again, you don't NEED to be different, it's just more LIKELY to help you if you do. Think of it like how Dewd always practices by drawing his own stuff or stuff in his "style", right? He has a harder time improving because he just does variations on what he knows instead of opening himself up to make new mistakes and possibly learn in the process.
>>
>>82204507
You'd have a point if I didn't explain how you can improve your color usage immediately after.

>>
>>82197156
>Even when I was updating, it was never a typical update format. Y'know, beats?
That's a really terrible way to read comics. It also doesn't help that your comic is boring.
>>
>>82204091
Not that anon. I think your weakness is composition and control of value. You seem to be too concerned with actually nailing the figure so it happens that you forget the rest.

Say, why choose that camera for this kind of scene? There is nothing happening on the left side, so once you go there you lose interest. You could've chosen a lower horizon and a more dramatic pose, and made better use of value so that the figure in the background would be more relevant an menacing. You could've drawn the main character crouching and the background figure standing at a taller point in the background, and leaves and branches pointing downwards onto the character to raise the tension.
>>
>>82204091
>Rounded hatching to define forms on the figure.
Neato. Love that shit wherever I see it.

>Largely unidirectional hatching in the bg, and some random crosshatching in the near tree and shield.
Using a different system on your fg and bg isn't wrong, but this is something to keep tinkering with I think. Crosshatching on the shield is rounded to show form, which is nice.

>Sometimes hatching in black, sometimes hatching in color to show texture (as in the hair) or in color for no specific discernible reason (as on the tree).
Same as before. It's not strictly wrong, but I get the feeling you're working out what you want to do here. I don't want to discourage that, but maybe don't stop here.

>Composition of the drawing sets the fg figure up as the focal point, framing him at the top and bottom with canopy and grass, uncluttering the space behind him with a simple tree trunk.
Good. Yes. This is good.

>Value scheme and hatching on the trunk undoes a lot of what the composition had going for it.
The dappling is a cool thing to try your hand at. So, you know, keep trying and you'll probably get somewhere cool eventually. But the drawing set you up to put your highest contrast at the focal point of your scene in a pretty natural way and that didn't end up happening in the colors. Maybe consider soft rather than hatched edges for your dappled lighting?

>Light yellowy linework on the leather.
Neato. Could probably be pulled through a little farther. The arrow, for example, might benefit from the same thing.

>Worm's-eye-view.
Thrilled you tried it, but it's not terribly consistent. Pushing the same worm's eye view on the tree(s) might help to emphasize the figure.

Not the guy you asked, FWIW.
>>
>>82204794
I agree that his method of making arbitrary, non-story-beat chunks that scroll vertically is a bad idea. The comic's composition doesn't play off the verticality and the "beats" let the story drag on due to an illusion of progress.

>your comic is boring.
That's just mean.

>>82205178
It was obvious you were setting up for this mu style, but how does that help you? How does drawing a wildly disproportionate character when your own anatomy is shoddy, benefit you? You can draw fan art that isn't copying proportions, but rather content.

All of the other points are still valid but you chose to ignore it all and wait to post the reference pic we were all waiting for.

Valid to whom? To people in /hyw/? To people who read your comic? To people who commission you?

Don't you understand that stirring shit and begging for attention here is a waste of your potential and ultimately damaging to you? You're not doing yourself any favor by convincing yourself that all the criticism you receive here is nonsense.

You are just a drop in an ocean of average artists. This isn't mean, it's just the truth. If getting a dedicated shitpost thread every now and then on /hyw/ is your idea of success, you're on the good path. Otherwise you better take a step back and look at your own work in a more critical and humble way, and roll up your sleeves so that you can eventually face the competition.

Video can go sour really easily. A shitty voice, shitty mic, poor or no editing, footage of some dude talking into a mic, and so on are all probably dealbreakers for this. Also personally I'd be into one that talks nitty gritty paneling and storytelling shit, and the ability to skip back and forth might become valuable there.

In any case, knowing your shit or having a specific approach that doesn't totally boil down to personal taste would be nice. I mean, I don't know what everybody else would read or watch but that's what I go for.

>>
>>82205933
Systematic surveys might be okay on the review end. A synopsis>review by categories>who it's for format tends to work well.

But there are a shitload of comics out there, and comics have a lot of fandom-oriented discussion but very little formal discussion (the way you might get for film or the fine arts). So maybe consider using multiple comics to talk about a single formal issue sometimes (for instance talking about how "the fold" interacts with paneling, especially in infinite canvas pieces).
>>
>>82205811
Why not? I'm actually interested in your rationale. I'd think that if you're drawing Zelda stuff to improve yourself, either incorporating the nuances of style from across the series or going crazy with it would be the best way to benefit from it.

that's an interesting choice of words, what do you think is on the line?
because honestly, when i discuss this kind of thing in the threads, my only real 'concern' is 'the thread will be derailed'
after that, the stakes are low as balls.
>>
>>82206935
I can see how you'd think that, but as someone who is / used to be very similar in my attitudes and responses, that 'whiny' response might well be how they assimilate the information. After all, if you're really ignoring something, why respond so responsively to it? they say the opposite of love isn't hate but indifference
I reckon he's taking everything to heart, and the legit parts are every bit as frustrating as the illegit parts.
But if you're the kind of person who decides whether or not advice has been taken or ignored on whether the results reflect it, then you will never, ever be happy or satisfied.
>>
>>82206935
I'm not ignoring any advice. If this were a forum, or a chat room, I'd be responding to everything. Because I'd have TIME to craft my responses better. But since it's 4chan with its quick-to-die threads and anonymity (y'know, where you can't tell if the reply chain just got assimilated by someone else; and you rely on their good graces to tell you?) what I reply to is a lot different.

If this is something you don't understand and never had a problem with, I envy you.

>>82207025

>>
>>82206958
I mean it is literally trying to avoid responsibility for how one's art is received.
When something you make is interpreted in a manner you didn't intend, you can either choose to see it as the fault of the recipient or the fault of the creator.
You can't really do anything about the recipient. If that's where you place the blame, you stop thinking about what you could have done differently and don't have a chance to improve.

I think that all the arguing back and forth makes less new people want to show off their webcomics. A critique is always fine, but if the person doesn't accept it? Then that's on them. Right or wrong shouldn't come into it.

Honestly a mild circlejerk isn't the end of the world because the *biggest* thing stopping most people from working on their comic is motivation. Everyone improves at a different rate, but if you never draw, you will *never improve*.

If you can come to hyw and feel pumped to draw more, then that's great. And that was the original point of even having these threads.

>the reception of what you do and say is not your responsibility
That is not a functional approach to achieving a goal.
It's no more use to blame an audience for not liking your work than it is to blame the ground for not being softer when you jump off a building.
You can either respond to the situation or ignore it.
If you want to achieve anything, you must accept that you have the power to achieve things and you must accept that you are to blame for your past failures. It hurts.

In psychology, it's called having an internal locus of control. It is one of the most consistent predictors of getting what you want out of life.

agreed. which is why we usually give up on our goals if they require other people to react predictably or favorably to us being ourselves.
most people choose to change to try to please others. most of them fail anyway, and have lost something important in the process. the rest of us try to please ourselves and just hope more people that think like us start to exist.

I feel like maybe this strip would become a lot stronger if I nixed the final panel and made a new panel 3 where Skeggöld talks about it being hard to just watch two people kill each other and black hair being seemingly sympathetic. Then she'd break out the board games in panel 4 as the whole punchline, rather than trying to carry it for two panels.

I don't really feel like I should change it, but I think that might just be the looming deadline influencing me.

Maybe vary up the composition? Some angles where we can see the screen and said character, still including the car pushing him around of course
>>

Yeah your idea would make a stronger punchline - having the last panel be "whatever. Time to play some board games"
>>
>>82211008
>>82210427
what kinda board games did vikings even play? i mean shit, chess and familiar playing cards are almost unrecognizable if you go back more than two centuries
>>

Did they even have board games in Scandinavia of antiquity?

Yeah, looks like I should probably revise it. Ugh.

>>82211427
The sagas make a few mentions of "skaktafl" which is almost certainly the same chess as was played in the rest of Europe at the time, but a more vikingy chess-like board game was "tafl" or "hnefatafl", where a king starts in the center and has to avoid capture and reach the board's edge despite having less pieces than the opponent. We don't have any viking-age rules written down, and the surviving descendants of the game have a bunch of variations on how to capture pieces, escape zones, size of playing board and number of pieces, so the specifics aren't quite clear.

There's also references to stuff like "fox games" (probably fox and geese, which is ancient) and a bunch of other stuff. Google "viking age board games" and there's a bunch of stuff.
I don't think they did playing cards, but they did have dice.

>>82211877
Oh yes. They were stuck inside all winter and the sun barely bothers to get up in some places, so a huge part of viking society was based around sitting by the fireplace and passing the time.

How do you guys do your storyboards and character sheets? I've seen the pages in the OP, as well as done my own research, but I'm curious as to how you guys do it.

How many filthy nasty sex moves has Sarah learned in 511 years?
>>
Alright guys let's take that keen penetrating criticism rifle and aim it at this thing now >>82212757
>>
>>82212978
bottom left is fucking atrocious. the worst sin of any comic is to cram a wall of text into a tiny panel with boring pictures. especially if you're a poor writer on top of that.

that's just one panel. didn't bother to look at the rest.
>>
>>82212076
>skaktafl
>hnefatafl
good ol' vikes. making 'skiddley whiffers' not the weirdest named boardgame around
>>
>>82212958
All of them.

But she's never got to use them on any one, including a few of her own, and she's been saving it for that perfect boy (Jack in this case)
>>
>>82212757

technically pokémon has the accent aigu but whatevs. in case you wanna be accurate though, you type alt-130 to make it happen. don't try this on 4chan, it messes up the page for some reason.
still play missed a space
zhey're* out of ideas (also i fucking love her face in this panel)
either 'for super hero names' or 'for a superhero name'
(aand i fucking love angel's face in THIS panel)

also pretty good punch line
>>
One time I stepped on some burning twigs with my bare feet.
>>
>>82213243
how can you learn "all" the sex moves without trying them out? everyone's body can do different things. not like reading a recipe in a cookbook. this sounds like you trying hard to keep your waifu pure for your self insert
>>
>>82203941
I just have one question.
>Like, Ruto and Medli look like all of Scribble's other girls.
Which Scribblegirl does Medli look like?
>>
>>82213496
Sarah isn't Dewd's waifu.
>>
>>82213378
bet it didn't hurt that much. we're made of water and meat and leather. a few burning twigs aren't enough to cook that.
>>
>>82213496
She probably read up about as many as she could online, and then get's all high and mighty about how she know's all of them and could perform all of them.

But it's been a stated fact that she's a total virgin since, like, the begining of the comic.

But she's not pure, she's totally dick hungry and is willing to bang anything that moves.

You know, at this point I bet she's willing to have sex with dead corpses as well.

>>82213259
Thanks my typo man.
>>
>>82213496
Hmm good point. Studying things and knowing them isn't quite the same, not when it comes to sex0rs.
Then again it's the future, there are 200,000 pokémon. maybe there's also responsive VR sex for practice
>>
>>82213704
She is basically Mokocchi, right? But she came first. And she speaks her mind instead of just inner monologue.
>>
>>82183446
You have to really drive the "cinematics" to get it to work. I think in general dialogue-free comics aren't seen too much, but I think it's more because nobody makes them rather than audience preference. Jim Woodring has been at this for a while with success. There are also big publisher and capeshit stories within larger franchises that lack dialogue, and for the most part they are well-received.

Also, if you're still in this thread, really digging the Miyazaki vibe in the costume design. I gotta say though first panel that girl's right arm needs its elbow dropped because it looks real gimpy. Plenty of space underneath to draw a new elbow and make the top line a wrinkle. Also I think having that left foot lift up in the bottom panel will give a better impression of running.
>>
>>82213696
I can tell you it wasn't fun. Twigs already hurt to step on. And when there's a fieryness to them it's even worse.
>>
>>82213757
Yeah, Sarah is just more assertive with her approaches I guess.
>>
>>82213727
How realistic does VR sex need to get for it to count as losing your virginity?
>>
>>82213872
Actually no, screw that, Sarah is more like Rodger from American Dad when it comes down to it.

Hey guys, what do you think of this characters design? My early drawings of her looked too much like noodle from The Gorillaz, and someone else said she looks like Frisk from Undertale so I've been trying to make her a bit more unique. Yeah, I'm trying to make her look lanky but that's a tough thing to balance without it looking uncanny. Also, I'm terrible when it comes to clothing design based on modern styles, so I just went through a ton of fashion blogs and picked out pieces I liked and threw them together lol.
>>
>>82214506
Not quite sure yet, as far as story goes I'm still in the veeeeery early idea phase. I'm thinking playful, relaxed, and maybe a bit childish/selfish.
>>
>>82214551
just lengthen her torso. cute skinny girl torsos are fun as fuck to draw. try it! make her bend slightly at the ribcage and again at the pelvis. then imagine waterballoon fights where you try to aim for those spots and
anyway i like her hair. and those are very modern fashion styles, i guess that's why I don't like them. blech. so boring.. so dull.. unsuitable for a girl but would look bad on a dude too. i dunno, i'd be putting her in a camisole and short shorts and sandals.. and then maybe a hoodie over that.
>>
>>82214444
the 2 on the right look slutty. flat girls trying to show that much cleavage makes her look like a desperate slut.
>>
>>82214619
Hmmm, I should try messing with the torso length, so far I've only been changing arm and leg size, I forgot I could change the torso lol. I might need to find someone proficient in modern fashion to help me with clothing choices because I'm lost on that lol. Thanks anon!
>>
>>82214660
or just a normal girl who doesnt give any fucks. actually i hadnt really looked at the overalls-shorts one, that's easily the best. just needs a floppy hat
>>
>>82214444
I like the fourth design the most but I don't think the scarf (At least I think it is) works.
>>
>>82200470
Yeah, I do them. I actually just got asked to join the Webcomic Police review group, but I haven't finished my reviews for them yet due to a big real life project that's due soon. If you want me to look at yours, you can reach me/submit to me here:
http://comicthinking.tumblr.com/

A few things. I'd ask that if you can, send me what you've got (if there's more than 30+ pages) as a pdf or a zip of images just to help expedite the process for me. If I put it on Comic Thinking its more of a "this is what you need to fix" critique from one creator to another, where my voice for the WCP is more of a product review for a potential audience.

>>

I know it's kind of early in the story for a review but anything that helps me make my comic better is appreciated.
>>
>>82214785
But character design-wise I think she still resembles Noodle a lot because of the hairstyle you've chosen. If you feel strongly enough about it you can look at different hairstyles that still manage to incorporate blinding bangs but I personally don't think it's that much of a big deal
>>
>>82214913
awesome
id love a review of mine too later on
>>
>>82214495
fucking cute
love her with the hat
to make her design more distinct, maybe try giving her messy hair, or uneven bangs, wavy hair, rounder/more slanted eyes, close cut the hair on the back of her head ect, theres lots of options to try
>>
>>82214551
She has the same hairstyle and superpower as one of my characters, possibly the same race, but she does not share any other qualities.
JS
lol

What would be a good line for an energetic idiot-type character to say, with the tone of not having any regrets?

Initially, I had "My fist will leave a mark in this world!" but after reading it out to a friend, it seemed really odd.
>>
>>82215355
i think as long as the nose isn't sticky-uppy it wont look much like noodle
>>
>>82215543
How about something like "I'm gonna punch the earth so hard!"

Or "The core of the earth will feel my fist!"
>>
>>82215543
what exactly are they trying to say? like, "i matter and i'm going to be significant and well remembered for my fighting" ? and what has that to do with regrets?
>>
>>82215611
It's kinda hard to explain. The scenario is that the MC is leaving her master's sanctuary after being there for the last 13 years of her life. Having been locked away from society, she now leaves to make a name for herself and explore the world. The no regrets part would be because she has her doubts about going back to society after being away for such a long time, but at the end of the chapter she pretty much says fuck it and decides to head out.

>>82215610
I like those; I might use them later on, actually.
>>
>tfw have 4 characters' personalities fleshed out, 2 more left
>tfw only know how 3 of them would interact with each other, not the other 3
Should I just have it where they're split up and never interact in-comic or have it where they're killed off soon? I really have issues giving my characters personalities that aren't "I'm excitable" or "I'm angry" and I'm just lucky my first 4 are a mix of unique personalities.
>>
>>82215771
i would say 'ima leave my mark on this world, with my FIST'
>>
>>82215774
you know what i did when i realized some of my characters had never interacted?
i split them up
but not like you're suggesting, i split it up so the ones who didnt know each other paired off.. they had a chance to.
>>
An anon from the last thread I posted in suggested I try making longer pages. It was a pretty good idea.

SD's head really needs some construction practice (he's all spheres and simple shapes so that should be easy. i'd like to see you drawing his head rotating at different angles)
but the rest.. the rest is showing improvement. i mean okay that car steering wheel is fucking awful, but cars are hard. everyone else is starting to look a lot less like a big messy pile of shit and a lot more like a 1997 what-a-cartoon.
The only part that I think is actually worth redrawing completely is SD's hand in the 8th panel. i mean that is just a grabbage hand. look at it. now look at your hand. see how the other three fingers kinda line up when you extend your index finger?

oh so those fingers are just missing. so that's.. that's the edge of his hand there? okay, so you gotta add one more finger in, but then you should probably lop off the outer edge of the hand, because a hand doesn't really bulge out there.
