this is pretty cute. princess has a bad case of pinhead in a few shots but it seems like it's mostly her hair.
the text is a bit too wobbly, but worse in the first page than the second.
man, you WOULD think the assassins would have learned that. You'd also think they'd have stopped doing the whole 'having a polite chat with her first before jumping to assassination after her first refusal' thing. heh.
but yeah i dig your art. draw more comics

I think they're right, though. What is trying to be communicated in the first panel? Seems kind of an awkward shot.

>>81378542
Really like your marks, man. One thing that I find a bit visually confusing is the summoning of the fireball. Do you plan to color this? If not it takes my eyes a few moments to figure out what is going on in that panel, it's too reliant on the next one.

Just my 2 cents
>>
>>81385207
i suppose i'm pretty bad with shots, i never do them myself. just endless repetitive newspaper comic poses.. sometimes i try varying it up. i never would have thought of a chest-height shot unless something was happening to her tits or something... but the professionals all seem to do all different kinds of shots.

>>81386162
ALSO since you brought up shots, another point of the assignment was to include 6 different shots using THIS pic! It's good to vary up shots anon. (sorry if the pic is too fuzzy the scan the teacher provided wasn't the best)

Prepping for a switch from black and white to color, trying to establish color palettes, pardon the unfinished figures/hands

Think this colored-in pencil-lines style will do well for the comic as a whole if I tidy up the lines sufficiently?
>>
>>81391935
yeah this just needs more tidying and it'd be okay. well, some of them are fuzzier than others, so that needs tidying too. but i could see this working. reminds me of some book illustrations

This week on the Sisters; Erin pics up a bad habit. Also boobs. Gonna be a fun update come Thursday.
Got some web comic review talking points done because I was scouring the web to see who even does that and there are...so so very few. Might have to get back into it on principle.

>>81396612
Fish Club sounds awesome.
I remember seeing our thumbnails for this before, and I gotta say I really like how you're doing your colors here. Really helps carry the "whimsical directionless youth" tone. I'm also really enjoying these three characters and if this is to serve as introduction for your wider project, I think it'll be cool seeing how these kids are when Oliver falls into their life.

>>81394300
>That awkward silence.
Man, I hate that. Especially in dire circumstances, it just really interrupts this flow you expect to be going on. I went on a run once and saw a guy choking out a pregnant woman; and I had to run to a house and talk to some kid to get them to wake up their parent so I could use a phone, but he was just spending the night and it wasn't his house and I'm like "kid, you're answering the door at 6 in the morning in the slums and it isn't even your house? Can I talk to an -adult-?"
Art is good, story seems like it might be interesting. You got a site/link?

>>81378643
I gotta wonder what excuse she told her husband so she could run down an alley and beat a guy up. Digging the frustration she's got at choking people out. After awhile the silent takedown method has to get old, and people probably get drool on your arm.

It makes more sense in context, but it's still a bit awkward. Yeah, you can have different "shots" at different heights of the body, but a panel should for the most part be focusing on something you want the readers to be seeing. You could have had the focus more one of the hands gripping the backpack strap.
If you're ever at a point where you are looking at a panel and are thinking I don't know, well professionals do all kinds of stuff whatever, you are not taking the composition of the page seriously enough. At least, that's where I'm coming from, you know? If you are looking for good poses, and different way to do different "camera" shots, you should check out old Harry Lucey Archie stuff. Those comics are dorky, but he really had worked up a great visual language with those characters. Sometimes I just sketch 'em when I wanna loosen up.

Yeah minor thing, looks really good dude.

1) Just think about what type of character you want to introduce and think of a suitable way of introducing him, kinda like how in an action movie you always introduce your hero as a ''cool guy'' or if it's a romantic comedy or whatever you show your character doing wacky things because they're loveable and whatever.

2) it's perferable that all things should be part of the plot, or else you have filler, or disjointed storytelling, this does not apply to foreshadowing another possible story, however.

3) Building character is telling a story, and stories are usually told by characters actions and reactions, aka how a character behaves is extremely important to the story because what makes him/her happy/sad/angry is going to be what moves the plot along

4)Just have the ''Hero's Journey'' more or less in mind when writing, it's best to have each scene be as dense as you can make it

5) I'm indifferent to cursing, characters can be angry/happy/sad without resorting to cursing, it also depends on the age group your making this for, either way it's best to not do it too much.

6) Pretty much everything has to revolve around the main plot, a subplot is there to mainly develop a side-character or character behaviour who just couldn't go along with the main story traditionally, in anyway by the end of it it all must fall back on the main plot and influence the status quo like anything else that's happening

7) Subtext means quite a lot, body language, even in comic form can tell you all about a character, so do angles, scene blocking, character postures and placement all can pretty much carry a story on its own, but you have to gather yourself a lot of reference to understand how it works and how it should be done, I personally learned it from watching and studying tons of movies.

This is stuff that mostly depends on you, and the type of story you want to tell. Dialogue can be just used to flesh out characters, some people make comics where all it is is plotless dialogue, and their main interests are in presenting something as a character study.

I think it is cheesy to have swearing that is then censored in some way. You don't have to have swearing, but if you want to depict realistic conversations, even little kids cuss.

Stop cussing!

The rest of that stuff you gotta figure that out for yourself. At least have some sort of rough draft you can then go back on. No point in being overly prepared when creating a new story, everything will always end up changing in some way anyhoo

Pacing is essentially done panel to panel, so having a rough sketch is important so you can see how it reads.

Makes me think of this. I like how this advice reads as a comic, I don't know how it works as advice. It itself is a really well crafted manga, though, so there ya go.

As of now I'm still in the early sketching phase, eventually I'll get to making highlights and adding details like small tears and rips as well as creases in the fabric, for now I'm still erasing and redoing the top half of the robe to get it to match the bottom's layered look better since that one looks far too stiff to me.

Yeah, if you really don't want swearing in your comic, just don't have your characters swear.
There's some comedic potential to be found in inoffensive depictions of swearing like *bleep*s, [censored]s, *********s and grawlixes, but "sh*t" and so on are pointless. If your audience can handle knowing what word's being used, they can handle reading it without an asterisk.

Actually, I can think of one use; if a character is incredibly wholesome and inoffensive, it could be funny to have them speak incredibly mild insults in this way; d*mb, l*me, st***d, j*rk, etc.
I guess there might be other situations where you'd need to both see something being censored and know what's being censored for the point to come across.
>>
>>81405661
Personally I find censorship with bizarre priorities absolutely hilarious. Like "I fucking hate those g*d-damn niggers"

>Introductions can be handled multiple ways, but you should always keep in mind that the audience's first impression is important.
>Every conversation should matter, even if the part that matters is that it doesn't "matter". When your characters converse, they either progress the story or reveal elements of themselves through their interaction. If you want a good example of important dialogue that isn't about plot, look up The Maxx.
>What your character is "about" is entirely dependent on your objectives. What you're writing about and how define whether you're tackling emotions, traits, actions, whatever. There's no right answer to this.
>Never write a story you can't effectively tell in 300 pages or less. That's not to say that you should never go over that, but if you are unable to tell it and make it work with that much room, it's probably got a lot of unnecessary elements and redundancy floating about. Draft your story and think "if i crammed this down to as few pages as possible, how long would it be and where would the beats be placed along the story?"
>Swearing isn't necessary, but some people do swear. Think about your characters, your tone, and your audience and decide what you want to do.

Tapastic is a community of people who are actively searching and browsing for comics. It's generally seen as easier to get eyes on your comic on Tapastic, at least initially, than on your own website.

I still firmly believe you should have ONLY a website that you control, because in the long run it's better for ad revenue purposes (and since you can control EVERY aspect of website design it can be more tailored for your needs and the needs of the fanbase). Tapastic does ad revenue, but its 6 cents per 1000 views (last I checked) which is hilariously low compared to returns for sites with similar view numbers from sites like Project Wonderful.

I also think the Tapastic site design in general is just absolute garbage, completely against how I prefer to read comics, but that's just my opinion. The ad revenue thing is a measurable fact.
>>

>>81413214
>>81413337

>>
>>81413475
6 cents every 100 views, not 1000. My bad.

It's still far lower than other advertising opportunities out there that require you have your own website.
>>
>>81413566

>>81413566

>>
>>81413627
Yeah I can't recommend advertising on 4chan. There's a reason the space is so often vacant. It's 80,000 views for 20 dollars. Not ad-clicks, or unique hits. Just views, period.

That information isn't for you, but for anyone curious. With you, you just seem to despise me, and the feeling isn't mutual.

I was just telling people tapastic is fine. Someone may have still been under the misapprehension, if their only exposure to the subject was that last argument I'm referring to.

>>81413812
How would they have found it to begin with?

One of the biggest obstacles facing webcomickers, is people finding your work for the first time. It's the most uncomfortable catch-22 that hardly anyone is talking about, except in the vaguest terms. "It's hard." "Networking is important." "Do fanart." None of them wrong, but all of them vague.

>>81413843
I wasn't talking about money. I was talking headcount. It's fine if other people talk about that, but I wasn't.

>>81413925
Yeah man.
>>
>>81414046
if you thought people were saying you couldn't get VIEWS you misunderstood the argument even worse
>>
>>81414111
I think you're misunderstanding my misunderstanding of anything.
>>
>>81414167
I'm that guy you mentioned in >>81413004. I was referring specifically to revenue, not views. While views and ad revenue tend to go hand-in-hand, I was never talking about views specifically. Just revenue. So yes, you did misunderstand the argument.

But you'll never admit it. Just like you'll never admit that your comic is bland shounen knockoff garbage, and that's why it hasn't become more successful.

No, it's unsuccessful because advertising doesn't work! It's unsuccessful because of sick trolls who dare criticize your comic publicly! It could never be the fault of you, the creator!

I'm not sure why you're bringing up my comic. I hadn't. u:

But yes, if you do have a criticism, it's fine wherever you post it. Just make sure it's objective. And if you want a back and forth that gets a lot more communicated, clearly and concisely, email is the place to do it. There's a few reasons but one of them that requires the least nuance to explain is: "Ah yeah, I thought that too. In the future I was actually thinking (MASSIVE SPOILER)." Every editorial conversation involves revealing one spoiler or another. It's the best way to strategize. Why would I ever do that publicly? Would you? Would anyone?

Again. Not information for you, but the general public, reading these posts. That's my opinion on these issues. I don't make it strictly about me or you or anyone. My goal is to be consistent. And I don't think you treat other people this way. I accuse you of being inconsistent indeed sah!

If you'd like to sling mud, there is no stopping you. But these revenge-sleights and personal vendettas do confuse the rest of us. I mean look at this: >>81415081

People don't know who you are or why you're acting like this. What good is it, if you cause this? Try not to. Yes, I realize I'm trying to appeal to a sense of decency. It's crazy. Just crazy enough to work, maybe.

What are you on dude, the grass in the first panel looks awesome. Like a nice comfy rug. I personally love it. If you wanna try changing it the only thing that comes to mind is making it sharp points, but meh, i prefer comfy fluffy grass.
>>
>>81435543
Well, it's got a few issues that I can see:
The outlined lumps of grass are too blunt. They're exactly the same shapes as the leaves of the bushes in the background. Something sharper might be better.
The grass that's suggested by the jagged edge of shadows is too short and regular. It feels like a well maintained lawn, not a jungle. There's no bare patches, either.

It's okay, but it's like, Cucumber Quest tier slow, maybe even a little worse, and has a less regular update schedule. They have nearly all the same problems. But yeah, like Gigi, he wouldn't get pooped on nearly as much if he wasn't so easily provoked.
>>
>>81436940
Your audience can enjoy mass murderers as protagonists as long as you handle it well. The main points to focus on are not making them perfect, not having the cast TREAT them as perfect (unless it's dripping with irony and you have at least one foil, see Death Note for a strong example of a beloved monster), and making sure they're distinct and interesting as people.
>>
>>81439554
one last thing
>she gonna trip when she sees me
you mean trip as in trippin'? because that doesnt make sense in this context
>>
>>81436940
Somewhat indirectly showing him do fucked up stuff, Alex for example, the first few scenes of the film doesn't show him beating old people up and raping women directly, the monologues are there to sorta make the audience sympathize with Alex and like him for his personality rather than by what he does, not to mention, every other character around him is an asshole, a coward or a fuckwad that the film doesn't bother to try and make them likeable.
>>
>>81440096

Long story but it was a mistake on part of admissions. The teacher himself who kept helping me with my portfolio was shocked. Since everyone who applied supposed to receive mail saying to go to the portfolio review.

Hey, >>81442067 here. Thanks.

Don't be mistaken; when I say it's harder, I mean it's a lot harder. Learning a skill without anyone pushing you forward but yourself is a completely different beast to guided learning. I'm not good at pushing myself, and it took me over half a decade to finally get off my ass and start improving at a reasonable rate.

Maybe I'm just projecting and you're gonna have a totally different experience, but just, watch out you don't let time slip away.

I'm consistent now more than before
But only with drawings everyday and not actually producing shit
Aside from this
Thinking of making a lighthearted webcomic about two dads and their sons
Thinking of having each son next to their dad actually be a fuck up and the other dads son instead
You can see ones got sharper hair
And ones more fluffy
The fluffy ones are more aggressive

That's not bad. Something that's a little bit cliche will give you a lot of role models that you can get inspired by/rip off when you're not sure what to do or where to go. And it will make it easier for you to not get too invested in a project that's almost certain to be deeply flawed because you're a noob.

When's the first update? How many days a week are you going to update?

I need some advice. Im two issues deep into my first comic and needless to say I've put a lot of time, effort, and money into it. As a writer I have been working with an awesome art team. I recently took a break from the book while I accumulated more funds and ideas.

Six months later I come back ready to start up. Start reviewing the past two issues. I'm not as confident about my writing in those and am afraid it would create a sour start when I release it online in webcomic format. It's a little story is a little cluttered and the dialogue is a bit crass.

At this point Ive poured so much of myself into it that it's too late to just start a new series with them. But I'm having trouble fixing everything if I decide to move forward.
>>
>>81455406
nobody expects the beginning to be perfect. the point is, is it good? is it fun?
>>
>>81455406
I'd say it's fun. The dialogue is fairly humorous. I wouldn't call any of it bad. The ideas and concepts are interesting and the characters are distinct. It's Just definitely rough and overall kinda fails in its execution. I need to make this next stretch more cohesive and less verbose.

Is beginning a story with a short info dump really that bad? So many successful manga and comics begin with brief info dumps, I really don't get the hate, especially when it's difficult to introduce certain concepts that are very obvious and familiar to the characters but not so to the reader.
>>
>>81459744
absolutely not. key word is brief.
and rather than a dump, it should feel like it's being just.. slipped into your pocket like a tip
>>
>>81459744
the best way is to just throw the reader into the story, they'll inference on their own based on the reactions and dialog of the characters, if not show, dont tell, try to naturally fit in scenes or names

if neither is doable, then keep your info dump as short as possible, decide what you really need the readers to know from the get-go and trust they're not stupid, because it'll show and it leaves a bad taste on their mouths

>tl;dr
show it instead, dont patronize and if its a must keep it short and simple

or wait a bit and set up a reason for a character to explain things to another

>>81460747

I wish I could have introduced the necessary information more 'naturally' but I have written and drawn too much material now, so kinda stuck with an info dump, so I guess I'll just have to cut/shorten certain bits and get to the point.

first criticism is bollocks. this isn't a 'let readers figure stuff out' comic. it's a comic about a boy and his foul catghost
second one is pretty spot on, but i get the impression that's intentional. we're not supposed to like them, right? the dude is generic in the extreme, a bit dour. the kind of guy who MIGHT just be pulled out of his shell by a magical jolly happy creature, except this one turns out to be a cunt so it's only annoying him.
over time, I see them developing a kind of a dilbert-dogbert relationship, at best.
but what are you TRYING to do with this comic?

There's no major story. The cat/boy are just there to play roles in jokes. Pretty soon it's just going to be random things the cat/boy doing, like video games, commentary on world events, or pic related.

Okay, here's the idea.

Near future. Netherlands ir some other nice suffers horrible catastrophe and people have to leave. Family of refugees loses The European Refugee Lottery and has to live in Czechoslovakia, which means living in cockroach infested stinky refugee camp and working for trinkets in a factory than makes bionic penis replacements for furries and other sick fucks for trinket wage (even their 15 years old daughter). However they are good friends with a muslim family that won the lottery and now lives in Germany where refugees get much money more just from geting refugee benefits. Now every chapter, the muslims send some money to them, so that they can get illegaly into Germany, but they always fail in amusing comedic way, are beaten by the police, humilated on social media and taken back to Czechoslovakia (because throwing them to sea would be inhumane and teaching new group of cheap workers how to make bionic penis replacement would be expensive). In the final chapter, they give up all hope, commit suicide and are unceremoniously turned into medium for growing penis replacements.

Good idea or too depresing?
>>

Refugees from The Netherlands or other civilised countries would be welcomed in most of Europe because they'd be a boon and not a bother. They wouldn't go to some eastern-european shithole.

The idea of having sex with your own clone or whatever is pretty mainstream. Like, Heinlein wrote All You Zombies all the way back in 1958, and Asimov wrote a song about it. I doubt you'll find many people with an outright fetish for it, but I doubt the selfcest will scare off anyone who wouldn't already have dropped because it's cartoon porn.
>>
>>81475877
>Asimov wrote a song about i
About fucking his clone, I mean, not about All You Zombies.
>>
>>81475512
vanilla
have you seen the onceler fandom?
anyway as long as theyre hot
>>
>>81475960
>>81475877
Fair enough! Although my idea involves short-distance time travel (like a few days instead of years or decades) rather than clones, so the main trick is to get it to work without creating any major paradoxes.
But that's kind of beside the point when the main focus is two identical, improbably attractive people having sex.

>why Czech?
It borders Germany.
>there was no other job?
Would slavs let refugees to get picky with jobs?
>in a natural disaster, wouldnt neighbor countries be supportive and allow entry?
Except for Germany and Austria, all the western countries are still dealing with kinda serious unemployment problem. Same situation might repeat in the future. Add some populism and you'll have a world where even skilled refugees from nieghbouring country get painted as a problem to be forced upon somebody else.

it just needs a few tweaks
her expression in the last panel is pretty uncharacteristic. the big watery pupils are a lot more precious than usual, instead of her kinda tough look. plus her general feature arrangement and that blush just... look off. she suddenly looks like some kid from a german santa claus tale talking about wanting a cure for their sister or something.
plus the dialogue is making me imagine a totally different voice than usual. so polite. doesn't need the please.
and redhead in the last panel seems like she should have more of a quizzical expression (squinting a bit for example) to make the awkwardness funnier and more tangible.
>>
abump
>>
man this thread has been so bad.
>>
>>81482994
Yeah, working on the facial features so she's less babbyfaced. Her blush usually looks a lot better once it's properly blended.

You really think it seems that out of character for to say "please"? She's often a bit brusque with Skalmöld, but I don't think it's weird that she'd be a bit more polite under different circumstances like talking to a friendly coworker she doesn't know too well.
>>
>>81485391

Any tips on how to get nice, clean shading and coloring?
>>
>>81490264
What style of coloring are you going for?
>>
>>81490407
Honestly, whatever gets the job done.

I'm not self hating enough to try photorealism stuff
>>
>>81490458
Okay, so cel-shaded? I'm assuming you're working digitally.
For that, it's basically the same as doing nice, clean line art. Work at a high resolution and use a hard-edged brush.

For more gradual shifts in tone or color, deselect everything you're not working on and use a huge fat soft brush.

Remember, value is more important than anything else about coloring, so regularly desaturate your image to make sure it still works.
>>
>>81490264
cel-shading
simple but has some depth, sharp egdes, no blending or gradients
limit to about 3 shades
-local colors
-shading
-highlights (optional)

composition and focal points are are different thing but i drop two cents for that too
>>
>>81490264
nothing's cleaner than fill bucket. now if your lines arent clean, you have to play around a bit with its tolerance
>>
>>81490812
>>81490949
>>81490985
Got it. How do I make anti-aliasing less of a pain to work around when it comes to filling?
>>
>>81491349
Don't do filling on the same layer as your lineart. Do it on a multiply layer above it and use a selection to keep the color where you want it.
>>
>>81491515
you can do that too. apply the selection on the lineart layer and then do the deed on the other layer
but jesus christ that takes forever. i can't stand it. at LEAST i'd want to DUPLICATE the lineart so there's lineart on the color layer too.
anyway >>81491349 you mess with the threshold/sensitivity of the selection tool, or the bucket tool. whichever. you set a percentage and it automatically goes 'this color AND colors relatively similar to it' when it fills in
however, overuse of that can start to 'eat through' your lineart. so play around with it til you get something you're comfortable with
you can also change antialiased lines TO aliased lines by selecting them and using threshold in photoshop, that just aliases the lines. but... that has some mixed and iffy results. and if your lines look nice, obviously don't fudge with em
>>
>>81491515
Well, that's what I do for the base color. It's the cell shading that'd be the problem.

>establish the line of the shading
>can't fill without either artifacts or aliasing
>>
>>81491789
yeah you definitely want to fill with an aliased tool. otherwise yeah that happens, the line of the shading/coloring actually leaves a little mess of anti-aliased pixels behind that you cant deal with.
you can switch back to a soft brush for some shading elements but get your flats down in aliased color
>>
>>81491775
>>81491855
Turns out I'm an idiot and the program I'm using actually fixes that shit

hahaha
>>
>>81491789
Here's how I go about shading:
>crop selection to the colors I want using the magic wand tool
>create overlay or soft light layer above the flats (depends on the lighting)
>paint areas of shade or highlight with the same brush I'd use for lineart

What are you even saying? Why are you mocking me?

It's common knowledge that the minimum wage, which is named as such because it's supposed to be enough to live off, has not been adjusted for an inflation that's occurred over decades and decades.

You know, I really hate the cuck meme, but I'm starting to see why people use it so much. 'Defeatist' just doesn't pack that venom in it like it should.

You sir, are a cuck. You enjoy horror visited upon you by cruel, apathetic, greedy people. You like to be depressed, and to mope, and to cut down the resistance.

eh? i was told it was going to in seattle 15 within two years, and that was a year ago.. yknow, as the place got ludicrously expensive and i had to leave. because when you pay burger flippers that much money, the property values and rent just skyrocket, and everyone's incredibly reluctant to hire anyone, and just makes everyone do more work in the same hours.
you think you're helping catch up with the cost of living increase, but all you're doing is increasing it

>>
>>81509449
probably because it's not mockery, just disagreement
but when you go around talking like minimum wage is 'supposed to be enough to live on' and 'we're fighting' and 'you're giving in to the greedy' and 'minimum wage isn't increasing in line with inflation' you kinda mock yourself.
>>
>>81509447
>because when you pay burger flippers that much money, the property values and rent just skyrocket,
Nnnnnnooooope.

Educate yourself, and not from media thinkpieces. This is like the wage gap myth but harder to disprove.

Giving the average worker a bit of buffering money like that, will not cause inflation. It will funnel directly back into the economy. They will spend money on non-essentials again.

Aside from this being wrong, I want you to think about this in terms of principle.

Let's say you cannot pay for your water, or electricity. You fail those bills. What happens?

Okay, now... You'd shortchange your human labor? They're a necessary resource too. Why do you get to skimp out on them?

You seem to be ignoring the facts: THE WAGES. HAVE NOT. BEEN ADJUSTED. FOR INFLATION.

WE WERE PAYING THEM 15 DOLLARS AN HOUR WAY BACK IN THE DAY, PROPORTIONAL TO WHAT THE DOLLAR WAS WORTH AT THE TIME. IT WAS WORKING OUT.

STOP IGNORING THIS BASIC ASS FACT FOR THE SAKE OF YOUR SOPHISTRY.

>>81509486
>but when you go around talking like minimum wage is 'supposed to be enough to live on' ... you kinda mock yourself.
If this is your only argument, it's a weak one.

Have you given credence to the thought you might be wrong?
>>
>>81509535
Talk to anyone who actually lives in these places if they're happy about minimum wage going up. All it does is benefit the absolute poorest while shafting everyone above them, including our bosses who are currently struggling to pay us

Granted, we need to overthrow all the do-nothing executives draining corporations of their money. But the victims there are the mid-level supervisors who ought to be running things because an upper level isn't even necessary. Not the precious poor.

also like half the shit youre saying is just factually untrue. and youre like, really mad

>>81509557

If we get to that point and
>including our bosses who are currently struggling to pay us
is still true, tehn perhaps, JUST PERHAPS, his business is a failure, and not meant to be.

Any business reliant on the undeath of the workforce, is a failure. Can't live by working there? Fuck that business. Let it die.

>also like half the shit youre saying is just factually untrue

funny thing about benefitting one while screwing another. it doesnt help anyone. we're all in it together.

>everyone happy, spending money unafraid
this basically just sounds like trickledown except in reverse. but at least that's not hypocritical. it's just.. against physics. in reality people are and always will be too scared to spend their money if they have any inkling that they might lose it the next time policies change. until we stop pitting classes against each other, there will never be enough peace for a working economy
but you're too busy feeding into the media paranoia machine and its fnords

Instead of changing superficial aspects of your character designs to make them more appealing, work on your drawing - that will make them more pleasant to look at than a new nose or hairstyle.

I like it, especially the storytelling. Biggest thing to keep in mind: Values! Use darker shadows - everything's super bright. No more crosshatching for shadows! You want black shadows that compliment and follow the form. Crosshatches never look natural. Use texture instead. (pic related)

This would solve most things >>81508802 noted:
>Your backgrounds are too clutered
>Its too bright for it to be nightime
>Blood would be dark nor white

Stuff like
>Your shots are not dinamic
(dinamic lol)
>You should include perspective
are "advice" I wouldn't overthink to much atm.

This person clearly has no idea what makes a shot dynamic. Dynamic shots are a result of a good gesture and good composition, which includes the arrangement of values I noted earlier. By the way, you always "indluce" perspective. You can do it wrong, but as soon as you're trying to convey a 3D enviroment on a 2D canvas, you're including it.
While you should definitely go over how forms work in space and how basic perspective works, don't mind composition for now. You'll eventually get a feel for it and it's a bit of an advanced topic. If you're really interested in how to arrange a good layout check
>http://www.floobynooby.com/comp1.html
It covers not only composition, but everything you need for interesting visual storytelling.

But all that aside: The most important thing is that you continue working on your comic. Have a schedule already and keep with it! I'm looking forward for more.

S/he used to look so cute. What the heck is this?
Also you should cut out
>experimenting with style
unless you have a decent grasp of at least two things: Proportions and the most basic understanding of the human body. If you want to improve try out figure drawing.

Try not to copy, but to nail the proportions and gesture first. Then you can think about the skeleton (ribcage, pelvis, limbs). Tip: Proko on YT covers all of this.
>>
>>81516988
Annabeth was never supposed to be cute, He's supposed to look like a little asshole. You guys just happened to find him cute for some reason.

either way I'm still just playing around with it.

And if I don't experiment, then I stop improving, and I still am trying to get a basic grasp on the body and all of that jazz.
>>
>>81517198
>I still am trying to get a basic grasp on the body and all of that jazz

Just do 30mins of figure/gesture a day and you should be decent in a month. I believe you, if you say you're trying, but I never really see results, beside the long term improvement that comes with drawing a lot. At least use references, dewd.

Look, I was like you, but only drawing what you know will not bring you any further. I get that you only want to draw your comic and your characters, but experimenting with style won't help you. In fact, you may even regret it someday for building up bad habits. I have the suspicion that you don't really see or mind your mistakes, but just say to do so to pander us. That's the wrong way. You want to improve for yourself, not for us.

If trying out styles is fun for you, do it. But be wary that it's not really going to help you to get any better.
>>
How big is your reference folder? mine is 340 MB or something, with 714 pics or so in it

I've got two: one for general stuff and one that's for stuff relating to my comic.
General: 783 mb, 1633 images
Comic specific: 3.41 gb, 897 files (there's a few PDFs in there)

Kinda silly, considering I barely ever use them.

>>
>>81520438
Well, either they don't have all that much substance and so don't grab your attention, or you're a bit of a flake.
What kind of story ideas are we talking?
>>
>>81520570
>or you're a bit of a flake.
I wish, I'm not quite that interesting.

An idea that I've been coming back to quite often but keep dropping is a short story about a flash forward by a couple hundred years to an Earth that's been so fucked up by climate change and pollution that it's got an alien appearance and humans have regressed technologically because there's no industry. I wanted to have a focus on dealing with environmental hazards because it'd double as an excuse to improve my background skills.

My problem is that it feels too stale even though I'm personally into it, post-apocalyptic stuff's been done.
>>
you ever have that 'problem' where the only new characters you can think up are villains.

>>

>>
>>81514680
Man that is a weird direction to go in. But it's creative! I love how everything you do with this comic is just practicing new stuff. it sort of interferes with the ability to enjoy it as a comic per se, but as an experiment we get to be party to, it's wonderful

Yeah but what's the actual plot.
Like, the way you describe it you sound like you want to make an album of "visions of the post-apocalypstic future", not a comic. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

>post-apocalyptic stuff's been done
EVERYTHING has been done. That quote about there being nothing new under the sun is over a thousand years old.

>>81521023
Make him an ally of the heroes without changing anything about him and see where things go.
>>
>>81520958
not that there's anything wrong with things that have been done
but this has been done in such an annoying whiny politically-charged manner so many times, and the particular details you're going with exascerbate that... yeah I don't see it being possible to enjoy a story with that premise.
it's wonderful when scifi and fantasy present you with an offkilter world that makes you think more about your real life, stuff you take for granted or never question.. but more and more nowadays we all hear all the questioning of things all the time, and I think a lot of us are sick of it since we have no power to change things anyway. no power to change anyone's mind.. just caught in the crossfire all the time.

Either you're willing to put that in, or otherwise why post here?

Thanks for the candor, I've been showing this to a lot of people and have gotten completely positive feedback other than some design elements on the website so its nice to get some honest critique on form.

One big thing mentioned was the lack of texture and the open spaces: there is a reason. I have a colorist who is painting each page, pic related is one sample without a second run of inking.

Off topic a bit, I'm a sculptor usually, and a drafter professionally. My comic stuff is a passion of mine, but always a side project I've also got an old DA with my 3D work if anyone is interested.

Well, you've got your setting.
So if what you really want is to explore the setting, I suggest making something like Crossed - not having one main storyline, but several smaller stories about different characters trying to make their way in the post-apocalypse.
This lets you show off various facets of the world you've thought up without having to think of some grand, overarching plot.
>>
>>81521023
I have a problem where I create a character for a single story and can't think of anything else to do with them
>>
>>81522010
shiiit im like that too

i can come up with characters really easily but to expand that into a full story? yikes. i suppose this is common though.

i've read common advice where you should ideally come up with an idea for a setting and then the characters, but i do the reverse and it just comes naturally.
>>
>>81442067
If you had gone to the portfolio review you still wouldn't have gotten in, your art isn't good enough for an animation career
>>
>>81521420
most people get into what they're into because they find it fun and easy. it comes naturally to them
if some other thing like writing doesn't, you can't get mad at them for saying 'i want this to be as fun and easy as drawing is'
>>
>>81507729
this guy here, checkin it out now
yes yes i remember this now. i'm not surprised to find out you're a sculptor, this seems to be more of a series of illustrations than a comic. Kind of like an old tapestry, yknow? each scene is a SCENE but it's not so much a story for the eyes to follow. not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's quite atypical for a comic and difficult to even categorize it as a comic

Short comic done for March. Didn't end up as long as I originally planned, but I don't think that works against it too much. I could probably even cut it down more. What concerns me more is how wordy it is-I was trying to emulate the experience of listening to a storyteller, but I think I erred too far on the side of telling vs showing.
Also, my skills with physical ink still aren't up to snuff. Not helped by my scanner dropping some of the fine detail, even at high resolution/dpi.
Oh well. April's story will be better, I hope.

Animation schools want to teach people how to animate, not basic draftsmanship (they might have a separate course for that). It's like how college doesn't teach their lit majors the letters of the alphabet. If you can't draw good lines and have a bad understanding of weight and shapes, you're not going to be able to follow the lessons at the same pace as everyone else.

More complex art is harder to animate. More complex doesn't necessarily mean better.
Animation schools, to my understanding, don't care too much for complexity. They're more interested in the expression of motion, weight, acting, clear compositions and a good sense of space.
>>
>>81524944
dont worry too much about how you feel. you're definitely getting better, you definitely have a way to go. there's a ton to feel good about, a ton to feel bad about.. but you're happier overall if you don't focus or worry too much on how you feel. feelings... aren't that useful. they get out of control.

>>81525068
oh okay. that makes sense
in any case though i really feel like this guy, despite the hilarious crudeness of his art, may very well have what it takes to do animation. he seems to understand a weirdly good amount of things bout movement and stretching and perspective. i'd love to see him study animation and give us some crazy bizarre shit. it actually reminds me of some anime, but i can't think of what. one of those reallllly weird ones.
